    Simple Questions - August 02, 2019

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

1st month owning a PC = cares 50% aesthetic 50% performance. After 1st month: 100% performance. Fight me.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:07 AM PDT

This is my case. When I was looking for parts I cared about aesthetic too, and definitely paid the price for it. Now, after 1 year owning my first ever gaming PC I only care about performance, fps, and gaming experience in general. Is this also your case? Just comment with your aesthetic/performance % balance, since when you're in the "PC master race" and your thoughts if you want, so curious!

EDIT: as I see it: acoustic, thermals, reliability and longevity ARE performance factors.

EDIT2: Seems like who built his first PCs more caring about one thing, now wants the other. That's interesting.

First PC in 6 years, and my first AMD CPU! Powered up the very first try!

I'm so excited lol. This thing is so zippy compared to my last. I can't wait to game some games lol

I really like the case too, it has plenty of room and I was able to hide pretty much all the wires. This was my first fully modular PSU and man was I missing out before I got one let's just say that.

Running everything at stock speed currently. Had to go into the Bios to get RAM running at 3000mhz but once I loaded the profile all was fine!

This is the 4th PC I've built from new parts, and I believe the first to turn on the first try :)

This sub has been incredibly helpful to me. Thanks everyone!

    I am an idiot

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 08:16 PM PDT

I ordered an EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 XC ULTRA GAMING thinking it was the RTX 2080 Super version. 30 minutes passed from the time I realized what I have done and google express wouldn't let me cancel the order. I will be hauling myself to best buy tomorrow to cancel that order. Make sure you double check what parts you buy before you order to avoid making a mistake like me.

If I can get them at the same price, is the Ryzen 3700x or intel 9700k better for gaming?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 10:52 AM PDT

So I'm about to order parts for my pc in less than a week, I've posted here before asking people to take a look at my build and tell me if something's wrong. Well a lot. of people suggested switching to Ryzen and some insisted even when I tried telling them that where I live it would be the same price. Not to mention I'll need to somehow update the BIOS for the Ryzen to work and not every store is offering those kinds of services here.

So, if we aren't talking price, strictly for gaming - 3700X or 9700K? Ill be pairing the CPU with a 2070 super or OG 2080 if I can get a good deal and Kraken x52 for cooling.

    Requesting a PC (hopeless)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:06 PM PDT

I was just doing research on PC parts for 2 hours straight and I still don't know what to do and that's why i'm here.

(I don't speak perfect English so sorry for that)

On the PC I need I will be using the editing software Premiere Pro and other Adobe programs.

Games I will be playing are Overwatch, Rocket League and Fortnite. The game I want to be able to record at 1440p is League Of Legends. But I would like to know what the price difference would be if the PC would only be able to record at 1080p.

My maximum budget is €1100 but i don't want it optimized to €1100 if the requirements for my PC are lower.

I am gonna buy my parts in Belgium some local websites are

I will be buying the parts in 4 months if the price is gonna be around €1100, If the price is around €700 i will be buying theparts in about 3 weeks.

    Components i already have

    Monitor: https://www.asus.com/be-nl/Monitors/VG248QE/

    Mouse: https://www.razer.com/gaming-mice/razer-deathadder-elite

    Keyboard: https://www.razer.com/eu-en/gaming-keyboards-keypads/razer-blackwidow

I don't know if I should overclock or not.

I would like to have 1TB SSD and 32GB RAM if possible with the budget.

(I don't know if this build is possible in the budget)

I never realised how important thermal paste was until now.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 01:25 PM PDT

I'm slowly gathering parts for my first gaming pc and while I was doing that I thought I would experiment on the families desktop. I noticed that the desktop ran very hot (60°-80°) (it has an i3 540) with just a few tabs of chrome open. And at around 115° with Age of Empires II open. First of all I decided to dust it out, that reduced the temps by 5° but they were still hot so I went out and bought a $2 tube of thermal pase and once I applied it temps were now 50%-70% cooler. The miricles of new thermal paste.

    New CPU help

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 03:53 PM PDT

So I just got my Intel core i5 upgrading from an intel Pentium. I took out the old one and carefully placed in the i5 and put everything back to place. The i5 came with a new fan that had thermal paste applied so I swapped fans too. Once everything was back in place i went to plug my PC in and when I hit the power button it wouldn't start. My led lighting would flash and I could hear the fan turn but it only lasted a second and I cant get it to go on for more than a split second before the power shuts off again. I tried putting the old CPU back in and now it wont work with that either. I used pcpartpicker to make sure all my parts where compatible before buying the i5 and it said everything was fine. Any help is appropriated I just hope I didnt screw up my PC.

Can I Overclock Ram on an A320 Motherboard?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 03:17 PM PDT

Since this motherboard is not so overclock friendly, I was wondering if I could overclock a 2400mhz ram unit to 2666 or maybe even 3000mhz. Thanks.

Which of these cpu coolers should I get for a i9900k?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:32 AM PDT

So i really like the look of AIO coolers, but I've read there not the best. I was specifically looking at the X72 NZXT and the Corsair H100i.

So that turned me to Notuca's NH-D15 and the Be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4.

I'm not even considering the Notuca bc of the hideous colors.

It's either between the 2 AIO or the Dark Rock Pro 4.

What should I go with OR do you have another suggestion? I'd like to be in the $100-$150 range.

    2080ti temps when gaming

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 11:01 AM PDT

Just finished up my new PC yesterday and today I finally managed to get some time gaming with it. I've seen a lot online about 2080ti running hot when gaming and just want to check to see if my temps are ok, in your opinions. When gaming, the gpu immediately ramps up to 70C. Literally within the first couple of minutes, over the rest of the gaming session it tends to fluctuate at around 73-80C. It's an EVGA gtx 2080ti XC using the aggressive fan curve from precision X1. My cpu temps seem fine, it tends to be below 55C. What do you guys think? Are these ok? Thanks!

Video card is busted, need suggestions on a new one!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:43 PM PDT

After 4 years, my video card decided to finally give up on me and died. I figured I'd take this opportunity to upgrade my GPU and possibly my CPU too. Here's my parts list:

I'm not totally sure if I need to upgrade my CPU but if it's necessary for the type of gaming I'm gonna be doing then I will. I'm looking to be able to run games like Rainbow Six Siege and Dead by Daylight on max graphics at 60fps. High end triple A games basically. My price range for a video card is around $500 -$600, with a little wiggle room. With a CPU thrown in it's around $1000. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

Looking for advice on how I can improve my first buid components

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:22 PM PDT

Here are my components for this build.

I kinda just tried to make everything work, also trying to learn what works with what so I can get the best out of my parts. Is the 1660 too much for the Ryzen 5 2600? Just worried if it might bottleneck.

I had a $500 budget, but at this point I'm just trynna get the best out of $700

Should I buy some fans as well?

    144hz monitor stuck at 72hz

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:02 PM PDT

Guys and girls, I'm an idiot. Sorry for wasting all of your time! I had FreeSync enabled in the monitor settings (man do they hide that setting well...). I disabled it and we're up to 144. All good. Thank you to everyone who reached out and lent a hand. This is a very supportive and helpful community!

    Monoprice Zero-G Monitor

    Vega 64 GPU

    Hi there,

So, this may or may not end up being a total noob quesiton. We'll soon find out. Any help would be appreciated. I recently purchased a new Monoprice 1440p144hz monitor-linked above. I've been having issues actually getting it to display at 144hz. I have changed the settings in Windows. The monitor reads 144hz in my AMD Radeon software. It seems like it's at 144, but then I check the monitor settings and it says 72hz. I'm connected with a Display Port (I've tried two different cables so far, same results). It doesn't seem like there is way to manually manipulate the refresh rate in the monitor settings.

Am I missing something obvious? Again, any help is appreciated, thank you.

My first PC build, looking for much feedback!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Primary use would be for high-end gaming. I may also end up using it for streaming, or work, but gaming is the main priority.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

The monitor I selected has 1080p resolution, and ideally I would like to run more demanding games on medium-high settings with a steady fps.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Around 1500, I am happy to go up or down $100-200 if I could get much more bang for slightly more buck or if I'm spending too much for too little improvement.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Just started building my first PC in nearly 10 years. Saying goodbye to my Phenom II X4 and GTX 460 very soon. I'm going with one of the new Ryzens and a 5700 XT for this one. What do you guys think about this build in terms of cooling?

I'm a little leery of what I've put together here. We've all read about the issues with the 5700 XT running super hot, would it be worth it to wait for the AIB cards with what I have going here? Wasn't going to buy any extra fans and my room is generally kind of hot (~70 degrees). The NZXT case, while it looks great, doesn't seem to have the best airflow as well. Maybe this is a problem? Thanks for any input

No lights, sound, nothing. I've made sure all front panel connectors are plugged in properly, 24-pin & 8-pin connectors from PSU are both plugged in. I'm afraid I fried it. Any help? Here's my build.
