Alternative mesh device so I can ditch Google Wifi Posted: 19 Aug 2019 06:57 AM PDT A 48 hour internet outage has made me aware that Google Wifi doesn't function as a normal LAN without a connection to the outside world... So I'm looking to ditch it. What's out there that will still work regardless of an internet connection? I'm finding it hard to find out if a device will work as a standalone LAN or not from the specifications online :( so what does everyone else run? [link] [comments] |
Best wifi router for $80 or less? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:41 PM PDT Wife gave me a budget of $80 for buying a router for our new house. Any recommendations? House is a small-mid sized 2 story. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:36 PM PDT The only source of internet in my new apartment is an ethernet port on the wall. I have to plug this into my router to have wifi, and then connect my Xbox to the router to get internet. This, however, is giving me a double NAT and is impacting my game play. I tried putting the router in Access Point mode and it pretty much stopped working, same for repeater and bridge modes. Can I fix the double NAT issue without AP mode? I tried plugging a modem into a cable outlet, and then plugging the router into the modem (the setup I had at my house before I moved) and it looks like the coaxial outlets only carry cable (cable TV works fine) and not internet (constant "in progress" status warning when logging into the netgear modem). How do I go about fixing this? [link] [comments] |
Question on switching service from one coax port to another. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:28 PM PDT Hey guys, I live in an apartment with Cox internet and two coax cable ports. Currently only one of the ports works to provide internet service, and I'd like to switch the service so that the other coax port provides internet service instead (they don't both need to work). I found where my coax cables are in the apartment but wasn't sure exactly what I was looking at as I've never done this before and wanted to confirm with some more experienced people. Here is an image of the cables. The dark blue one on the left is (as far as I can tell) where the cable comes into the apartment. It is connected to the dark blue one on the right which is labeled living room. The light blue/turquoise one is labeled bedroom and is not connected to anything. I wanted to try and just unscrew the dark blue "living room" one and screw in the "bedroom" one to the same place, but I couldn't get it unscrewed and am not sure what the metal connector in between the dark blue ones is. (Also I don't know if that's even the right thing to do.) Do you think this is something I can swap myself or should I just call a tech? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Wifi Router Upgrade...Thinking Ubiquiti Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:17 PM PDT Going through the process of upgrading my old Netgear AC1750 router that the wireless seems to be dying. Came to the conclusion of getting an Asus AC86U and now I am going down the Ubiquiti rabbit hole. I have done a lot of reading but just wanted some extra advice on my setup. Cable line is 300M Around 30 devices total and everything is wireless due to no CAT6 wiring in the home. Home is 2300sq ft 2 story. Thought was ER-X + AC Lite - The AC Lite will be on the 2nd floor facing down but mounted under a cabinet until I can run a line through the attic. I have local plex server that streams to Rokus throughout the house along with game systems and my main PC. The Plex server does have a 3x3 wireless card in it and my PC is 3x3 too. Currently both are connected at 867M speed since thats the max the current router does. My issue right now is getting consistent wireless speeds during busy times at home. My PC rarely tests about 250M and I move files from the PC to the Plex Server. I am concerned about the ER-X max throughput of 1Gbps (possibly upgrading to 1Gbps cable someday) as well as the AC Lite speeds being able to keep up because thats the current issue I run into with an access point of the same speed. So now I start looking at upgrading the ER-X and upgrading the AC Lite and now I am priced out of my budget and would just pick up the Asus router. Are my concerns valid? I always like siding on the overkill side, but currently in the $200 price range for this solution. Would the upgrade to "enterprise" routing and wireless AP solve my issues without the need for a better setup? [link] [comments] |
Asus router (like ac68u) vs ubiquiti setup for House of 4? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:25 PM PDT I think that I've narrowed down my search for finding a router for our house to be either a ubiquiti set up with a USG and AP AC lite or an ASUS router. Is a ubiquiti setup worth the extra $50 or so? We have four people in a 1700 foot house that are all either streaming web browsing or gaming. I will be gaming on Lan and my roommate will be gaming over Wi-Fi, the other two won't be gaming. I bring that out because I keep reading about Qos on the USG and it sounds like it's really beneficial for gaming. Thanks for any help! [link] [comments] |
Routers that can do gigabit WiFi? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:50 PM PDT I have gigabit internet and am currently running an R7000 with 1st gen AC clients and can reach ~300-350mbps over WiFi. I want to upgrade my router to be able to reach gigabit over WiFi or close to it (~800-900mbps). I was looking into hopping on AX but saw that the spec wasn't even finalized yet and I had a bad experience with adopting draft N in the early days so I want to wait on that for now. Is current AC tech capable of reaching these speeds? If so which router and client hardware do I need to do so? Or do you guys recommend I just go ahead with one of the current AX routers on the market? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 06:46 PM PDT Good day, I had an Apple Time capsule that I wanted to change. I seem to have issue with wifi/bandsteering. I also have a Pihole on the network. I just purchased a TPLink Archer C7 and set the Apple TC in bridge mode. First thing I notice, a lot of sharing is on by default, ftp on by default, password is limited to a maximum of characters and can't use symbols... WPS enabled by default, upnp... web interface defaults to http and not https... What type of security is this? I feel bad for the "regular usual" consumer... Anyway, I like how I can see who is connected and their hostname, very basic feature the the time capsule wasn't doing it.. What router would you suggest? I had a pfsense box as a router/firewall but didn't have time to manage it. Thanks for all the suggestions! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 06:41 PM PDT my roommate moved recently out of this flat and now i want to get a new internet provider or contract. But i really don't understand what the first black box with all the telephone cables is supposed be used for? shouldn i get a new one? would a new one improve something (if yes what)?? Would it become obsolet if i'd get a new router, which is a thing i plan to get with the contract. any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
How much EMI do residential power cables actually inflict on nearby ethernet cables? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:43 PM PDT Another poster here who's setting about wiring up an old home. I've pretty much settled on using CAT6, but there's a couple of lines in particular where I have no choice but to run relatively close to AC power cables. I'm posting from the UK, where I believe data cabling is not subject to any special building regulations beyond the general ones, and the power is all 230v AC. Realistically the only power drawn from these cables is for low current things like LED lighting and laptop and phone chargers. The data cables will be about 8" apart from the power for a stretch of around 6m. Unfortunately there's no choice but to run this way due to the shape and age of the house and its limited underfloor access. My question is mainly around the impact of EMI. On such a distance, is there likely to be any significant impact to performance? And is that also true for a PoE cable that will be taking the same route? I can't imagine that such a situation would cause the connection to be impacted significantly or warrant doubling my costs to run CAT6a, but at the same time I have no idea how to quantify EMI and am keen to hear everyone's thoughts. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:49 PM PDT So I'm renting a 3 floor college house between 9 people, and the router and modem are placed in the basement. Because of the size of the property, the signal and speeds are abysmal on the top floor. Are there any efficient, but not overly expensive ways of extending the wifi upstairs? The house unfortunately does not have any ethernet cables running upstairs, and there are only coax cables in each room. I've asked the landlord about running a cable upstairs so we could establish a second access point, but he seems fairly against it. He has suggested a wifi extender, placing the modem and router on the middle floor (however there is no good spot to place it on this floor, as the only coax port is oddly placed and would be prone to getting stepped on), and a mesh wifi network. Another option I've seen is the Netgear Powerline or MOCA. However, I'd like to stay away from directly connecting via ethernet, and I'm not sure if connecting a router through MOCA is a good idea. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Where can I buy authentic Intel NICs? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:40 PM PDT Sorry for all the inane questions but the 4 port ones are either hundreds of dollars on Newegg or cheap on Amazon but likely fakes according to some of the reviews there. How can I be sure the Newegg price isn't overpriced? Who else sells these? [link] [comments] |
Need modem and routers Xfinity Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:19 PM PDT I don't know anything about networks. I can't get any service down stairs with WiFi at all. Upstairs is fine and at the bottom of the steps. I can't really get any outside. I need something strong to connect with a smart TV. It's a condo with two floors. [link] [comments] |
Frontier uPnP / Packet Loss issues in Bridge Mode Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:15 PM PDT TL;DR: Experiencing heavy packet loss when using a Frontier router as a wireless network bridge. I am not new to Frontier and am fairly well versed in home networking. I have been (mostly) successful at dealing with the complications that their equipment brings up for years. However I have moved into a larger home with poor ONT/Modem placement, and the WiFi range doesn't reach the back rooms. Currently I have 2 Arris NVG468MQ routers, one acting as the modem/router/DHCP Server connected to the ONT and one in transparent bridge mode acting as a switch and wireless repeater. Both act as wireless access points, using channels that should not interfere. When in bridge mode, the 2nd router hides information about its NAT type, Firewall, and DHCP, which I assume is because these should be disabled. However, I seem to be getting double NAT issues when gaming or running Taceroute tests, as I'm experiencing up to 60% packet loss at some times. I'm looking for any suggestions on how to properly configure this setup. I have considered simply buying a switch and wireless repeater which would solve the issues, but from what I understand this configuration shouldn't be causing the problems that I'm seeing. Posted: 19 Aug 2019 04:09 PM PDT I wasn't aware this was going on but I guess my kid has adjusted and makes sure he's not in the middle of anything for when I get home from work. Today I arrived early so he's currently angry with me. Granted I'm not all that knowledgable about networking but I don't think this should be happening. What could be causing this? Is it more secure to use a pfsense router as an internet gateway? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:50 PM PDT I'm currently using an Asus AC68U on Merlin firmware as my router + WiFi access point for my US Internet connection. The router will/ has stop getting security updates so is it better to place a pfsense router in between which gets regular updates and just use the Asus as an access point? [link] [comments] |
MOCA stopped working over quantum FIOS Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:36 PM PDT So I've been using a MOCA bridge in my house for probably the past 10 years, using an Actiontec MI424 rev f - I've had zero problems with it even after upgrading to quantum. However, over the weekend it just...stopped working. I factory reset the actiontec today, walked through an old dslrreports walkthrough and no dice. I know it works because after factory reset it booted my quantum router and became the dominant router, but it just won't connect via MOCA anymore. Is my only real solution replacement? Or is there something that Fios may have recently changed that I could adjust? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:08 PM PDT I'm moving from a residential gateway Arris 5286AC to using multiple access points for wifi. 2 story 2500 sq foot house in the US with uverse. Coverage with the single router was not good due to some RF obstructions in various points in the house. Family of 4, each with the typical devices: computer, tablet, phone. about 30 total devices on the LAN including IOT stuff. How important is MU-MIMO in my environment? Will I regret not making MU-MIMO one of my requirements for the new APs? [link] [comments] |
Question about using Apple Airport and Orbi Posted: 19 Aug 2019 03:04 PM PDT So I set up an Orbi mesh network in my house, which works great. The previous owners of the house also left an Apple AirPort Extreme with one of the satellites Currently I have one Orbi satellite in my gaming room to hard wire Xbox and PS4, and the other is halfway between modem and the back of the house that otherwise doesn't get a signal. My question is, can I hook up this AirPort to the same modem the Orbi system is on, in order to hardwire my PC that is in a different room? [link] [comments] |
Do Ryzen chips (like Ryzen 5 1600) support AES NI for pfsense? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:27 PM PDT |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:13 PM PDT Hi Everyone, I recently bought a new house and don't plan on moving anytime soon. Since I plan on sticking around, I want to design a home network from the ground up. The big uses I am looking for are the following:
I am a sysadmin/security guy by trade, so I am not afraid of doing things through the command line and have a good understanding of networking concepts (took a 2 year CCNA class in high school about 13 years ago). Thinking it through, I figured I would need the following:
What I am not sure about is the devices I can use to get the best bang for my buck. I've read different things about Ubiquiti, Mikrotik, and TRENDnet devices. I have no clue what to use where or what types to get the best value. I've also read conflicting thigns about running CAT5e or CAT6 in my house and if it's even worth the extra cost to use CAT6. Would it be worth re-using my ASUS router instead of buying a higher end router (I currently have an ASUS RT-AC68U running Asuswrt-merlin). Which NICs should I get for a pfsense system? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:04 PM PDT Looking for PCIe x1 gigabit NICs (I can plug one into the second x16 slot as well, correct?) [link] [comments] |
Compensating for Apartment with Cement Walls? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:28 PM PDT I moved into a small two bedroom co-op apartment with cement walls, and I've found that they diminish the Wi-Fi signal pretty quickly. I'm trying to determine the best way to resolve this problem. I have a Verizon FiOS Quantum Gateway router (I bought it, not renting it), and I was thinking ideally that I would run ethernet to each room and each would have an access point – it would extend the network running from the Verizon router rather than create a separate Wi-Fi network. I've never done this before so I'm not sure exactly how to go about it. I see that Google has a WiFi product, but that appears to create it's own network so I don't think it's what I'm looking for. I'm seeing posts about Ubiquiti products but I'm also not clear whether it would work with my network or would create a new one. Any thoughts or feedback would be helpful. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Aug 2019 12:13 PM PDT The modem/router from my isp kind of sucks ass so I'm trying to get better WiFi coverage in my place. I ran an ethernet cord from ISP router to another seperate router for better coverage. Do I have to put the ISP device into bridge mode or anything like that or do I just have to enter my router through its ip and set up an AP from there? [link] [comments] |
