Any affordable recommendations for a Computer Science College student laptop? Posted: 20 Aug 2019 07:50 PM PDT My boyfriend is in his senior year of college and is currently using an old laptop that happens to crash in the middle of him doing course work or playing League of Legends. His birthday is coming up, and I would like to gift him a new laptop, so that he will not have to worry about his current one crashing while he is in the middle of his online courses. He currently has a 2 or 3 year old HP laptop (not sure of the model). Any advice on specific laptops or reputable brands to use for coding and/or online coursework that can also handle running League of Legends? My max price range is about $750 USD. Any recommendations would be a great help, as I am not very tech savvy and do not know much about computers and laptops. [link] [comments] |

$2000, Canada; for university, occasional gaming, preferably lightweight Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:07 PM PDT This laptop would be used for school (Microsoft Office and other standard stuff like that), occasional programming, AutoCad/AutoDesk Inventor, occasional gaming - Sims is literally the only game I play, about twice a month for a few hours, so nothing intensive). I currently have a Mac (I'm familiar with PC, Mac, and Linux), but I hate the file sorting system. Like, I HATE it, and I have from the moment I got it. I'd like to say away from Linux, but I'd consider a Mac. PC is my #1 choice at the moment. I am a bit concerned about windows 10. I switched to Mac when Windows 8 came out because they got rid of the start menu and the system they replaced it with was really cheap and impractical (I actually installed windows 7 on a laptop that initially had Windows 8)... has this improved at all? My current laptop has a 1.1 GHz Intel Core M processor (would like a better one), 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory, an Intel HD Graphics 5300 1536 MB graphics card, and a 500GB hard drive. I prefer no larger than 13", as well as lightweight for travel. My budget is $2000, but that's already a stretch - I would prefer closer to the $1500 mark. Right now, I'm considering the Surface Laptop 2 (8GB memory/Intel Core i5/256GB storage), but I'm a bit worried about a) performance while gaming and b) the storage space. For a computer game, Microsoft Office, and a few files (I use cloud storage as well), is 256 GB enough? I think that covers all of the questions in the posting guidelines. Thank you for your suggestions and feedback! [link] [comments] |

Should I get this laptop I found on sale on NewEgg? Posted: 20 Aug 2019 02:43 PM PDT Hi everyone, I've been looking into gaming laptops that are ~$1500 and I found this one on NewEgg that gives a RTX 2070 and i7-8750 which should, at least I think, let me have good gaming performance for games like Borderlands 3 and be able to test my applications for when I do coding for school/work. Is this actually a good deal or should I keep looking elsewhere? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Digital artist looking for a new Windows laptop to replace my 2014 MacBook Pro Posted: 21 Aug 2019 03:06 AM PDT Hey guys! I am looking at computers with my father right now as he is helping me buy a new one. I am currently using my MacBook which is 5 years old and is slowly dying. Lags using Photoshop and I have no hope in running ZBrush or Maya. We are currently looking at an MSI P65 Creator / Prestige laptop. Was wondering if anyone has one of these and are worth looking into. I have no idea what it will be like hardware wise, but it needs to be able to run software like Adobe Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC, 3D software like ZBrush and Maya without any issues as well as being able to split screen Photoshop and Google Chrome well without much lag from either software. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be fantastic! Link to laptop: https://www.msi.com/Content-Creation/P65-Creator-9SX Other laptop suggestions will be appreciated to look into! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total budget and country of purchase: $3000 AUD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for money How important is weight and thinness to you? I need to carry this to uni, so weight/thinness is a must. I would prefer something light. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" - 15.6". Nothing bigger than 16"-17" as I need to carry the laptop to uni. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC, Adobe After Effects CC, Clip Studio Paint, Paint Tool SAI, ZBrush, Maya, Guild Wars 2 and Overwatch If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just Guild Wars 2 and Overwatch at 60FPS, preferably Med-High settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touchscreen / finger-print reader required. A decent build and feel quality of the frame and keyboard, as I will be using certain keys a fair bit. 2 - 3 USB ports would be excellent. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. An SSD would be nice, but a HDD is totally fine as well :) [link] [comments] |
I'm a student who needs a reliable gaming laptop that is on the cheaper side. Posted: 20 Aug 2019 08:49 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget: $1,000-$1,500 United states * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery life is less important to me than best specs for price and potential longevity of the unit. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** My laptop will predominantly reside in my backpack so a lighter weight is preferable but not if it hugely impacts performance. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Indifferent * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No editing softwares, I want to have gaming capability. I have a primary desktop at home so my laptop will be my universal use portable gaming unit for me. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I mainly play games like Hollow Night, Ori and the Blind Forest, Stardew but I don't want to be too restricted in the event that a more graphically demanding game comes out that I want to play. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** A quality keyboard is one of the most important features to me. Looking for a more than decent laptop for gaming and programming. Any recommendations? Posted: 20 Aug 2019 09:55 PM PDT Looking for a list of the best laptops for programming and gaming. Budget isn't really my focus because I'm looking at this purchase as an investment, but anything close to $5000 is def out of the question. I'm expecting to use this laptop for years to come. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Budget: No more than $3000-$3500. Could push higher but preferably would rather be in this range or less. Country: USA
Not sure what a 2 in 1 form factor is but, would prefer good battery life, must be reliable, must last at least 6 years.
Not a deal breaker but would prefer the lighter end of things
Would prefer Windows because it is most suitable for a wide range of programming languages and is what I'm most familiar with.
Prefer 13"- 15", but not a deal breaker.
Plan on playing most mainstream multiplayer games like cod and fortnite, also race games like forza. Might develop my own games in the future on unity or unreal engine. Also plan on coding in mostly Java, Python, C#, C++.
Playing Call of duty, fortnite, forza, etc. I'd be happy with 80+ FPS.
Must be reliable, and have a decent keyboard. Must last for atleast 6 years and would rather not risk over heating.
Sorry if I've left anything out, I'm new to this. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a $400-500 laptop for my father-in-law for his studying (UK) Posted: 21 Aug 2019 01:34 AM PDT
$400-500 ( £330-411, but could go a bit higher maybe ) , United Kingdom
Good Battery life sounds good, good specs. Mostly it will be used for studying, no gaming.
Moderately, but not that essential.
Windows 10
N/A
Only word processing and general use
No games that I'm aware of
Good build quality / Robust would be good. Perhaps an optical drive as he still uses CDs/DVDs
Hi there, I'm looking to find a laptop in the $400-500 range for my father-in-law for studying. He doesn't play games, but would be watching videos and using it for browsing and stuff. I guess most functionality would be typing up essays, storing photos, pretty standard stuff. I looked at the quick picks and they look decent, although some of them seem to be a bit out of date. Also I'm based in the UK so maybe the model numbers are a bit different. Oh FYI $4-500 in GBP is £330-411 but we could possibly stretch a tiny bit more. Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
Looking for budget 15" laptop (under 400 USD) with main concern being light gaming Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:06 PM PDT Just need a cheap laptop for some very light gaming and surfing for a family member. The Aspire 5 seems the way to go but I can't decide between the Ryzen 3 3200U and the i3-8145U. My main concern would just be which one games a little better. Benchmarks seem to favor the Intel based on what I could see but comments I've seen around the web suggest the AMD chip would be much better at gaming. I'm a bit confused. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
General Purpose Laptop (1.5k-2k). Currently deciding between XPS 15 & LG Gram 17 Posted: 20 Aug 2019 09:04 PM PDT I am looking for a general purpose laptop (browsing web, watching netflix, etc). No real gaming or photo editing or CAD. No touchscreen or 2-1 either. I am looking for something with great display resolution. I don't mind either 15 inch or 17 inch. Battery life, reliability, build quality, and being long-lasting are also things I'm looking for. Currently for my price range, I have found: Dell XPS 15 7590 - 15.6" 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) LG Gram 17 - 17" (2560 x 1600) IPS Display Do you guys have any other suggestions? Or maybe why one is better than the other for my case? [link] [comments] |
Laptop for university and some light gaming Posted: 21 Aug 2019 12:24 AM PDT
Budget: $600-1200 (Europe)
Of the three, battery life is my first priority. Specs are of course important to. Fairly indifferent on 2 in 1.
The laptop will spend much of its time in a backpack travelling to and from school, so weight and thinness is a big factor for me. Always liked the visual look and lightness of units like Matebooks for example.
Windows
13"-14"
Not going to do much editing, if any at all. Would like for the laptop to handle some light gaming.
The laptop being able to handle games like Football Manager and Europa Universalis without much trouble would be great.
A good keyboard means a lot to me since I will be writing long essays on the laptop. A good trackpad is important too. Lastly, a good vibrant screen would be great. I've been looking at Huawei's Matebook X pro series as well as their new Matebook 13's. They look good to me, but I'm a bit unsure about their durability. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
$3500, USA, Looking for something awesome. Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:01 PM PDT
I tried a new HP Spectre fully tricked out w/ OLED. Loved the build, and display. The trackpad was garbage though, and does not respond well to smaller, more precise movements. The MBP's trackpad just smoked it. Thank you all! :) [link] [comments] |
Im torn betwen the IdeaPad L340 Gaming vs Legion y540 Posted: 20 Aug 2019 11:03 PM PDT So I've been looking for a laptop and I've narrowed it down to 2 Lenovo laptops the Legion Y540 and the IdeaPad L340 Gaming. I personally prefer the design of the Y540 but the battery life is killing me only 3hr compared to L340 7-9hr. Ideapad L340-15IRH Gaming Non IPS display intel Core i7-9750H Processor (2.60GHz 12MB) 8GB DDR4 2400MHz 256 GB SSD + 1TB 7200 GTX 1650 4GB 135w Lenovo Legion Y540-15IRH-PG0 IPS display intel Core i7-9750H Processor (2.60GHz 12MB) 8GB DDRV 2666MHz 256GB SSD + 1TB 7200 GTX 1650 4GB 170w Can someone explain how one is able to consume only 135w whilst the other needs 170w? It can't be that the slower RAM and a non IPS display can save that much power, can it? [link] [comments] |

Reliable build quality, no touch screen, decent keyboard.
Currently debating between a used 2015 MacBook Pro A1398 with an i7-4980HQ and a used X1 Carbon 6th gen with either an i5-8250U or i7-8550/8650U. How do the keyboards and build quality compare? I'm mostly using this laptop for programming, and it'd be great if it didn't die in one year (Zenbook 3 UX390 smh) I'd like some insight about buying either of these laptops used and whether or not I should consider a different, new/refurbished laptop. Anyone recently purchased from xoticpc? (Looking to buy a MSI PS63 Modern-096) Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:18 PM PDT Hey y'all, I'm likely going to purchase the MSI PS63 Modern-096. It is light, looks good, and has a NVIDIA graphics card which will help with any light video editing I do with Adobe products, as they are optimized for CUDA cores. I am planning to purchase from XoticPC, as they offer the best bang for your buck, selling the most updated version of the model for the cheapest (999 + $49 for the 8GB - 16GB ram upgrade). However, I have read that it often takes a longggg time (about a month) to get your laptop from XoticPC. I am wondering if anyone knows if this is still the case? Or can i expect in about 2 weeks or so? Also if you have any feedback on the laptop here it is: [link] [comments] |
Lasting laptop for new university student Posted: 20 Aug 2019 06:08 PM PDT Hey! I'm an entering university student in Canada, and I want a laptop to program and to type up math assignments (and not much else). Mostly I just want a really durable laptop that isn't too slow and will last me long days at school. Thanks a lot! * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Budget is around $1000 CAD up to around $1300 CAD in Quebec, Canada. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Don't care about 2 in 1, good battery is very important, and good specs are important but not as important as battery. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Neither matter in the slightest -- I'd rather have a laptop that is twice as heavy and has 50% more battery. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No editing or any CAD, and only minor gaming. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Dominions 4, Supreme Commander FA. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Would like to have a good keyboard and a really solid build. Nothing else matters, except the ability to add a wireless mouse would be nice. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Want a laptop that will be able to survive through university and not break or become too slow to bear. Razer Blade 15 2019 (Mercury White) or Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XA Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:22 PM PDT Hi guys, I just can't decide between these two laptops : Razer Blade 15 Mercury Edition and Gigabyte AERO 15 OLED XA Razer Blade 15 2019 Mercury White Edition Personally I like the Razer Blade more because of its design, but what I found on youtube shows that the AERO 15 is better in thermal. I also consider MSI P65 , but I've heard that MSI has bad reputation on heat management as well. Can you guys please give me some advises? Thank you so much in advance! [link] [comments] |
