    More details on Samsung's 45W Note10+ Charger

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:11 AM PDT

We finally have photos of the rating of the EP-TA845, Samsung's 45W charger that's intended for use with the Note10+ and Galaxy Book S.

    Looks like it's USB-PD, and supports the following modes;

    PDO (Power Delivery Object)

    Voltage Current
    5V 3A
    9V 3A
    15V 3A
    20V 3A

    PPS (Programmable Power Supply)

    Voltage Current
    3.3-11V 4.05A
    3.3-16V 2.8A
    3.3-21V 2.1A

This is quite interesting as we see >3A at <20V (Specifically up to 11V at 4.05A) using the first PPS profile. Looks like this means Samsung is going the low-voltage, high-current route that VOOC/Dash uses, while also abiding by USB-PD standards.

Unfortunately I don't know of any charger on the market that supports PPS at currents this high, however expect to see them soon given USB-PD is an open standard. I'm just glad to see we're now seeing super fast phone charging that doesn't violate USB standards.

I would guess the fastest charging speed you'll see using an off the shelf charger right now is 27W (9V 3A PDO) or maybe 33-36W (11-12V 3A PPS, like on the Anker PA-Y10).

From the information in this article, it looks like the Note10+ will require an E-Marked cable to charge above 15W. The included cable with the 25W charger is E-Marked too. This is quite odd since at 25W it should never exceed 3A. Nevertheless, an E-Marked cable will definitely be required for 45W charging since it exceeds the 3A limit of non-marked cables.

In the current smartphone climate, what phone made you settle down?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 02:47 AM PDT

By settle down, I mean you'll be using the phone till it breaks.

    Mine is Redmi Note 5.

Here's what I love about it:

    • Good battery life. It has 4000 mAh battery.
    • MIUI. It has so many features that I really love like native app locker, dual apps, second space, dark mode, and etc.
    • MicroSD card slot
    • I can use GCam with it.

Motorola Brazil appears to be significantly and misleadingly reducing the size of the hole punch in promotional material for the Motorola One Action

    Posted: 18 Aug 2019 08:54 PM PDT

Remember when OnePlus unceremoniously chopped off the bottom bezel from their phone to make it look better in ads? Well it looks like smartphone companies are not finished with cosmetically altering their phones in these type of instances, and Motorola is the next culprit. Promotional video material from Motorola Brazil shows a very reasonably sized hole punch cutout in the newly released One Action, probably even smaller than much more expensive flagships like the Galaxy S10 (source/full ad). There's one big problem though: in reality it is not nearly that small, and probably the largest hole punch in any phone currently out right now (particularly look at the size of the status bar, it looks even larger than two normal status bars stacked on top of each other). Fortunately, some other renders on the Motorola Brasil website show the phone design how it is, but nonetheless this type of misleading marketing has no place in the phone marketplace, and hopefully no poor soul is tricked by these clearly incorrect renders of the phone.

    TL;DR:

    Ad

    Reality

I made a video about the RCS for Android

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 10:01 AM PDT

Hi, since RCS has been rolled out to the UK I've had a bit of time to play around with how this works so I've made a video all about this: My RCS Video

I start with the history and then go onto how it looks when you enable it. The whole process could be a lot smoother to set up and hopefully Google get this all ironed out so it just shows up for every Android user. Any views, comments, likes are appreciated.

Realistically, how much does extra 20% battery capacity do for the user?

    Posted: 19 Aug 2019 08:46 AM PDT

I remember the first few Sony Z-series (Z, Z2, Z3) were pretty hyped up for "better than iPhone" battery life and around that time, the movement to get "long battery life" went mainstream. But it's been 5 years and we haven't seen progress since. Changing to a flagship of that size/weight class (like a Samsung S10) has only netted sidegrades in battery life over the years.

Only way to get even better battery life these days is to get a physically larger phone. But how significant is an extra 20% battery capacity for the average user? It's a big number on paper, but the difference seems less in actual use: the typical "normal sized" (5-5.9 inch screens) flagship can last a 14-15 hour day with no charging in between, so XL variant would basically last 18 hours tops - both are good enough for average Joe, but neither is good enough for Mr Needs Long Battery Life (who would probably have a power bank anyway). Thoughts?
