    general questions about Ubuntu

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 10:46 PM PDT

    hi everyone

I am completely new to Ubuntu. I was using windows before this.

I am currently running kubuntu 18.04. My pc is 32bit btw.

I have a few questions about linux in general.

    1) i understand that in linux that you can download and install packages using your terminal command. I installed my first package(chromium browser using the get apt install command). But what i don'd understand who is maintaining these packages. I understand that Ubuntu has its own repository. Does this mean that every distro has its own repository. And what is the purposes of this repositories apple or windows don't do this. Or is this the Linux version of app store and windows store. Also can i get packages meant for other distros and install it in ubuntu. I am asking this because i was looking to install code blocks in windows intstalling the latest version wasn't a problem but when i tried to get apt install it it got me version 16.01 but the latest version was 17.12 and when i went to download it from code blocks website directly it only had it for fedora ,Debian and centos. So can i download and expect it to run on ubuntu. Also is it inadvisable to download directly from internet instead of repositories.

    2) If i download it from internet from what i hear that it is very complicated to install unlike windows but i also heard there is commands to do this can someone advise me on this.

    3) I also heard you can choose which repo to get your packages by adding -t to your command but say i downloaded and installed it from other repo thus when i update my packages will it automatically update from Ubuntu repo or the one i got it from.

    4) Lastly, in my case if i downloaded and installed code blocks 17.12 from the internet but it was added to Ubuntu in the near future can i still update it from my terminal.

Thanks for your help i appreciate it. :)

backup directory to another directory with cron

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 01:28 PM PDT

I'm having trouble getting my cron task to run. Using Ubuntu 18.04 as network storage with samba. I have my share mounted at /share and an external hard drive mounted to /backup. I'm trying to get a cron job to backup /share to /backup weekly. I type crontab -e as root and 0 15 * * 6 /backup.sh as my entry. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Not able to modify permission of directories on nfs mount

Can someone explain to me why it is that not the user who owns the directory, not with sudo and not superuser with "sudo su" can change the owner of a directory on an nfs mount?

Running out of space on root filesystem

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 09:13 AM PDT

Hi! I just recently installed Ubuntu alongside my Windows OS. I followed a guide an partitioned my root space for ~9GB of space, swap an additional ~9GB, and ~30GB of space. The guide I followed said this would be plenty of space but my root space is filing up and causing major problem. I deleted my swap partition expecting to expand my root partition to what swap was but haven't expanded it yet because I didn't have my Live CD with me.

    Screenshot of GParted

Now I'm wondering why my root is filing up so fast, is this normal? Here is a screenshot of Disk Analyzer. Should I expand root like I planned? Should I still have a swap (I only made it so large because I heard that you needed to make Hibernate work but I couldn't make it work anyways)

Need help with Manjaro (AMD R9 390 crash issue)

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 11:13 AM PDT

The first time I've tried Linux (with this system) was with Ubuntu back in 2016, where it installed normally, but after booting it tended to crash after 20-30 minutes. Same thing happened with LinuxMint. I was kinda fed up and lazy to search for fixes back then and ended up switching back to Win10.

Here are my system specs: GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev 4.0) AMD FX8350 AMD MSI R9 390 8GB

As some of You already know R9 390 causes many issues such as stuttering, screen tearing, crashes and general slowness on many linux distros.

So few days ago I've decided to test my luck and download Manjaro KDE. I made a bootable usb, selected my language/keyboard prefrences and open source gpu drivers and decided to boot.

After booting to the welcome screen and a 5-10 second time frame, my screen turned black, and the first thing I thought of was "oh it crashed again".

I can switch to console mode with CTRL+ALT+F2 before the crash occurs and then it dosen't crash afterwards. That is until I decide to switch to GUI mode.

Anyway, I managed to find temporary fix here. But that one works until I decide to install Manjaro and boot it from my SSD.

My question is, how do I apply these parameters after I've installed Manjaro or is theres a better way to resolve this issue?

Also sorry for butchering the formating and typos, as I'm on mobile.

Install Linux without USB or DVD

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 11:10 AM PDT

I have Windows 10 and Endless OS on my laptop. Endless OS is pretty cute except there is basically no normal package system, so even installing things like docker becomes painful.

Is there any way to install any conventional Linux distro without USB drives? Maybe there is a way to just install packaging system on Endless OS, this would solve my problems too.

I need help with re-installing opensuse

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 03:23 AM PDT

Every time I turn on my laptop and opensuse starts, kde wallet shows up and then the whole thing is frozen. I can't type my password or move the mouse.

I want to re-install opensuse, but I can't load the usb. I still have the bootable usb from the last time I installed it, so it is not the usb.

Every time I click Esc to enter the bios, the grub thing shows up that always shows up before starting opensuse (to choose whether i want to load a snapshot or just opensuse). I don't really understand what grub is and every question related to this on the internet that I could find didn't help me.

So, I am asking if there is an easy way to open the bios and load the usb so I can install opensuse again.

Arch linux, cant boot to DE..

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 06:32 AM PDT

Apologies ahead that im submiting this on phone and doesnt have pics or logs.

hi, I got a 2012 alienware m14x r2 that I'm planning to use arch Linux on. It has dual graphic card that uses Optimus that I think us the core of the issue. Following the wiki, my installation went through fine and I'm met with the terminal arch.

during the installation I installed the nividia-lts drivers and x86-video-intel driver as recommended by the Bumblebee wiki (at the time I thought bumblebee was the only way to use optimus).

    here comes the problem.

    1. I installed Pantheon DE via alucryd's repo, no errors
    2. install lightdm and config the lightdm.conf to use Pantheon greeter and enabled the service
    3. reboot and met with blackscreen. I boot into tty, check status of the lightdm service, said, "service enabled, ... vendor disabled" next few line simply said failure code.
    4. ran debug, said missing Plymouth.
    5. installed Plymouth, reboot.
    6. black screen with blinking cursor.

then I check if I can start the desktop with startx.

    1. install xorg-int
    2. config the ~/.xinitric file with the simple "exec cerbere" and ran
    3. error
    4. checking the logs it said "xf86EnableIOPort failed to set IOPL for ..." underneath it said "no device detected" and "no screen found".

any help is appreciated thank you in advance.

Help - Linux crashes upon booting

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 09:24 AM PDT

I am looking to install linux mint and remove windows 10 from my computer.

I have burned the linux mint iso file (downloaded from the linux mint site) to a flash drive, making sure that it is FAT32 bootable format.

The option to load linux does appear on my boot menu screen, but when I load it, the screen goes black; still on, but not doing anything. Although the fans kick on a few seconds after booting it.

    Thanks for your help.

    Help with drivers

    Posted: 06 Jul 2019 08:05 AM PDT

Hey everybody how are you doing? I hope you are great. Here goes my story . I am 18 and got into u niversity in the electrical and computer engineering department (Something like that i am from Greece and there's a different name here ) the bachelor of which will take 5 years . My parents agreed and we bought a very powerful laptop (gaming) which will arrive in a couple days . Apart from Windows I will also have to use Linux . I am not totally unfamiliar with the OS but let's say that I know only the basics . My new laptop will have a core i7-9750h cpu and a rtx 2070 gpu. I plan on running Ubuntu and Kali Linux on my free time , you know ,pen testing always excited me. So here goes my question: what drivers do or may I need in order for me to have full power from my hardware and how can I safely and most efficiently do that (a tutorial?)???? And especially in Kali Linux in which I want to use programs like hashcat and other crunching software. Thanks everybody in advance .

No network devices detected on new CentOS install. How can I detect network devices?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 09:01 PM PDT

I installed CentOS 7 on and older PC and cannot get it connected to the internet.

I am plugged in via ethernet but still have no internet access. I can't ping google.ca. When I try to ping my home router I get "connect: Network is unreachable"

When I run ip link show I only see one option shown: lo, which I have gathered to be the localhost loopback address.

I have no idea how to figure out how to get centOS to detect my ethernet device (which is on my mobo btw, not a pci connection).

Thank you in advance for any responses.

How to rip audio CD book into mp3 via CLI

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 09:20 PM PDT

There are probably 101 different apps available to rip data out of an audio disc. What's the best way to dump the contents of a protected audio disc (library audio book) into memory for conversion into mp3 or FLAC via CLI? I'm looking for a script that can run on most old Debian distro without installing extra apps. All the tutorials online require apps like mpg123. There must be a way to dump and convert w/out running apt-get.

    Augen Netbook PC OE-A731

    Posted: 05 Jul 2019 11:55 PM PDT

Having the upmost difficulty in flashing ANYTHING to this accursed thing. I've been learning bit by bit, more and more the process behind how it exists (such as how it operates, etc.) From what I can gather it can't handle Windows CE 6.0, and the 5.0 that's on it will not run any of the applications, even though it boots completely. (Something about not finding all the resources or some such is the most common error it yells at me). My overall goal is to flash Android onto it, but in the meantime, I just want to repair the Windows CE to start with. After pasting the script folder onto the root folder of a SD card, the flashing process does not start after booting. WHAT AM I MISSING/DOING WRONG?!
