The new name for Spotify's app is... Interesting.

I guess the old name wasn't generic enough, what with the word "Spotify" in it.

The drawer behavior is changing. Users will be able to open the drawer by peeking the drawer, and then swiping. Big benefit is that this works with existing apps with "old" DrawerLayout versions. (from r/GooglePixel)

What ever happened to Assistant integration with Messages?

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:17 AM PDT

Google announced this feature like a year ago, announced it was rolling out like 3-4 months ago, and still nothing. Like a month ago, someone posted on this sub with screenshots that the assistant had popped up in their messages settings.

And yet it still doesn't seem like anyone has it. Did Google give up on this or delay the rollout? Has anyone gotten assistant integration yet?

[DEV] I updated my notification app Unnotification to be an overall notification manager app

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:21 PM PDT

For those of you who may or may not have heard of my app Unnotification, it was originally an app meant for undo-ing accidental swipe-aways of notifications, i.e. you swiped away a notification, this app would bring it back, either immediately after you swiped it or on demand via a quick settings tile. And…that was pretty much it. It had only one purpose and I tried to have it do it well, but it had a few problems that, between work and my personal life, did not have time to fix unfortunately.

    Until today.

Now introducing Unnotification 2.0, now in limited beta (up to 3000 users). Beta opt-in link: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.nasahapps.unnotification

While undo-ing notifications is still a main feature of the app, now I've turned it into an overall notification manager app that has the following features:

    Keep its own notification log

Although Android has a built-in notification log, most people don't know about it. And Unnotification 1.0 had a link to view it but the experience varied from device to device, and a good chunk of users just couldn't see it at all. So I made my own. Unnotification 2.0 will now keep a list of your notifications except media notifications. From there, you can:

    • Search through your notifications via any piece of text in the notification (the app name, the notification title, the text within it, etc.)
    • Find notifications within a specific date range (i.e. notifications from June 2019)
    • Find a category of notifications (i.e. emails)
    • Set up an auto-delete schedule to clear your log daily, weekly, or monthly

View snoozed notifications (Android Oreo and up only)

I always thought it was weird that if you snooze a notification but change your mind later, Android gives you no way of seeing it prematurely. You have to wait until the snooze time is up. Unnotification 2.0 will let you see snoozed notifications at any time, and tapping on one will show it to you for you to act on. There is also a home screen app shortcut to quickly view these in one tap.

    Backup your notifications

Unnotification 2.0 will let you make backups of your notifications. With these backups, you can export them to wherever you want (Google Drive, Dropbox, email, etc.), and you can apply these backups in the future to the app. The app will intelligently add notifications from a given backup while ignoring repeats. Backups can be run on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule.

    Dark theme

Because it's 2019 and that should be standard.

In addition, the following has been improved about the undo-ing feature (which is still Android 8.0+ only btw):

    • The app can now undo grouped notifications (/u/archon810, you're welcome)
    • If you also "Clear All" notifications, the app can bring back all the notifications that were part of that "Clear All"
    • If the "Undo this notification?" reminder gets too annoying for you, the app will suggest you turn that feature off

Also, while Unnotification 1.0 was originally only for Android Oreo and up, Unnotification 2.0 now supports Android Marshmallow and up, with viewing snoozed notifications and undo-ing notifications being the only features not available to pre-Oreo users due to API limitations (and the fact that snoozing notifications wasn't a thing until Oreo).

Unnotification will remain a free-to-download app. However, not all of these features I've listed come free with the app. By default, the app will only let you:

    • Keep a log of your notifications up to one day
    • Undo swiped notifications
    • Dark theme

But with the "pro" tier, you can also:

    • Keep a log of notifications indefinitely
    • Search notifications
    • View snoozed notifications
    • Make backups
    • Run schedules of backups or log clearing

The pro tier will launch at a promotional price of $0.99/month, but for beta testers, you will all be eligible for 90 days of the pro tier for free. The subscription can be canceled at any time, and if you do, the app will make a backup of your notifications for you and allow you to do whatever with your backup, so if you change your mind in the future and want to resubscribe, you can apply the backup and continue where you left off.

I hope you guys enjoy, and thank you for all the support. I am open to any comments and questions, so AMA.

What are your thoughts on true dark mode in Android Q

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 10:28 AM PDT

Why do you all think dark mode (true black) is so good with OLED phones (yes i know about the potential small battery savings)?

Currently with my pixel 3 on android P it is a dark grey until the screen brightness is all the way down and then it goes a full black. The only time that happens usually is when i am in bed at night with the lights off browsing or in the car at night. But i hate it because this is when black smear happens everywhere whenever I am scrolling on something. I dont mind black crush as much but black smear bothers me to no end. I have also used a galaxy 9 on one UI and the black mode makes everything smear and to me it looks so bad. Actually, seems like the battery savings is a wash between dark grey and black per this article. https://www.androidauthority.com/true-black-dark-mode-1003537/ so we get black smear and crush from turning off the pixels in android q for really no benefit?

With android Q going to a true black dark mode, i am honestly considering a iPhone XR due to the fact it wont have black smear issues. Thoughts? Anyone else bothered by black smear or is it just me?

    Edit: added article

I kept my Galaxy S8 G950U (US Variant) in my freezer and got a multi-core score equivalent to that of the Exynos variant.

    Posted: 02 Jul 2019 01:48 PM PDT

Here's the Geekbench score after I kept it in the freezer:- https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/13749420

    At room temperature:- https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/13748842

The myth is confirmed. Samsung does throttle your phone's performance based on room temperature. Not a big deal though, I prefer my phone's battery to last long, and temperature to not get high ... and I definitely don't want an explosive phone in my pocket.
