    Simple Questions - June 03, 2019

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 05:17 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is 3GB of VRAM good enough for gaming at 1080p in 2019 ?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:29 AM PDT

I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1060 3GB as the 6GB costs much more money in my country, but is 3GB of VRAM enough for gaming at 1080p high settings in 2019 and the foreseeable future?

Is your laptop or PC crashing to Windows Blue Screen Of Death while gaming or heavy usage? Do you have a NVMe SSD installed? I have good news for you.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 08:57 AM PDT

EDIT: Your PC may freeze as well at times instead of the Blue Screen Windows Crash. (Not sure what happens if your OS in not on the SSD however, maybe only causing Game Crashes)

Greetings, since I saw a lot of people facing the same turmoil I did, until recently, and not finding a solution to their problems, I want to help.

If you meet the following conditions, then this solution is for you.

    - You have a NVMe SSD installed on your mini PCIe port

    - Your Windows cash only during some CPU and GPU intensive games, mainly online multiplayer games (less likely on offline games for some reason)

    - You did a temperature check and your laptop does not overheat

    - Crashes are inconsistent, sometimes your game will crash in the main menu, sometimes after 5 min of gameplay

    - In your BIOs settings, your SATA mode is set to AHCI

At this point you probably tried everything, updating BIOs and Drivers, do a clean reinstall, reset or reinstall your Windows. But nothing has helped you to get rid of crashing to the Blue Screen :( while gaming.

    The Solution

    1. Go to this person's post.

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/72971-add-ahci-link-power-management-power-options-windows.html

    1. Go to "Option 2", "Step 2", To Add "AHCI Link Power Management - HIPM/DIPM" to Power Options

    2. Download the File from the provided link.

    Backup link

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-sciuzBpAlOe9MWoDaZuJ7Xv1HTfou5f/view?usp=sharing

    1. Run the File.

    2. New power options have been added to your Power Management.

    3. Open "Power Options" from control panel.

    4. Under "Selected Plan", there will be a "Change Plan Settings" in front of your current power plan. Click it.

    5. Now click "Change Advanced Power Settings"

    6. Window will come up, Locate "Hard Disk" under which you will find "AHCI Link Power management"

    7. If you have a laptop you'll see a "On battery" and "Plugged in", set both from HIPM to Active

That's it. You are done! Enjoy :)

    My Story

Saw a second hand Laptop for sale, a Dell Inspiron 7577 with a GTX 1060MQ for 400$ cheaper than retail price.

    >Wow, much good deals, many buys

The guy said his windows crashes sometimes during CS:GO but its not a big deal.

    >Must be the Windows, what a nub

    *Cha$hing*

Reinstall Windows, drivers, update everything etc. Put a new HDD in as well.

Start playing games, CRASHES EVERYTIME TO BLUE SCREEN.

    >Oh no, ive been dooped!

Thought it was a GPU/CPU problem since it occurs during heavy use

    >Nope

Check Dell and lenovo gaming forums, a lot of people with gaming laptops facing the same problem.

    >Wut

And their solution is, *Drum Roll*...... Return the thing.

    >That's not a solution

Don't even live in USA and no international warranty to cover me.

Through trial and error found out that the SSD was the problem!

    >Pew

Since I narrowed it down, after doing another round of research done by my friend, found an Indian IT guy (bless his soul) who said that the power settings for the SSD in the AHCI mode is flawed causing fatal failure during large system power draw.

    >Fixed, now I gaemz :)

Is an I7-4790 3.60zhz CPU still good enough for newer/coming games?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 09:05 AM PDT

I have been playing a game and my FPS aren't there were I would like them to be.

    I have a 2060rtx so I doubt it's because of it.

I know the game is not well optimised, but have seen people having better fps with even an i5.

So I am confused, is my CPU outdated or the game just poorly optimised?

Simple question regarding what storage to use to get the best performance.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:20 PM PDT

Hi, i have been playing on my laptop for quite some time and now wana build my own pc. So, i wanted to ask whether a ssd or nvme (250GB) for OS plus a 1TB HDD for storing games give a better load time or full ssd SATA 3 setup. Also, if i decide to go for the hybrid setup will choosing a sata 3 or nvme make any difference in data transfer to an HDD? (Just want to get the best space + performance for my bucks).

Feedback on Intel vs AMD builds

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:39 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming mostly, video editing (Handbrake) secondary.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I dont play the cutting edge with the highest graphics settings, so something mid-tier that will last another 5 years. For reference my current 7-year old desktop handled my gaming needs perfectly fine till it died of old age.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $2000+tax/shipping

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The Great White North: Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Obviously two very similar builds. The AMD is a bit cheaper so I can upgrade the graphics card to the 2070, but the Intel is a better CPU for my tasks - so I'm kind of split.

Also if anyone has feedback on the case and/or the CPU cooler, that would be appreciated! My biggest fear is overheating something, but I'd also like it to be as quiet as possible haha.

Plan on building my first pc

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:38 AM PDT

I was going to buy components ASAP but I've been hearing I should wait until the 7th if July for next gen.

So my question is where can I find some good educational material on how to choose the best parts and what they do?

Keep in mind I have zero experience. I want to learn the basics and then dive in deeper once I have a general understanding.

I keep getting this really dumb bug/crash/freeze involving the films and TV windows app

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:04 PM PDT

So I've recorded game clips using nvidia shadowplay. I use the film and tv app to watch them. Automatically the video goes full screen. Sometimes if I leave it full screen the whole display will completely freeze. I can still hear audio from the same clip and I can also hear people talking in discord(they can hear me too). Alt tab, Ctrl alt delete, ctrl alt esc doesn't work. The only way to get everything back to normal is holding pc power button or spamming ctrl alt delete and spamming enter to see if I log out or if it just randomly tabs out.

I haven't seen anyone else with this issue

Building again after 4-5 years. Out of loop on reliable brands. After sale support Reputation

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:57 PM PDT

Dear buildapcers I have been away from the scene for long time.

I plan to do a Ryzen5 2600 build. I will not wait for the 3000 cpu. I need this done in the next 5-10 days.

    1. What are good motherboard brands as far as support and reputation. Last time I was around I had trust in Gigabyte and Asus
    2. I would appreciate any feedback/suggestions on Motherboard and Memory from compatibility/stability point of view. I do not mind paying more. But desire stability.
    3. Looking to buy CPU/cooler, Memory, Motherboard, ssd/m.2 drives.
    4. I will reuse A) Case B) PSU 750W C) Disc Drive D) Graphic card FuryX 4gb
    5. Would like M2 boot disk in 500+gb
    6. Would like another 1-2 SSD in 1tb to 2tb range as well
    7. Not as important-> I plan to upgraded to 3000 Ryzen next year (along with x570 chipset and new GFX). Would it be good idea to buy the memory keeping that in mind?

    Thankyou

    3 to 4 pin adapter?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:01 PM PDT

I recently bought a Phantek Lux Digital case fan but I don't think it's compatible with my motherboard (B450 Tomahawk) since it has a 4 pin rgb header.

Is there a certain way I'm supposed to hook it up? Or is there a type of adapter for this. The case fan and my motherboard supports Mystic Light.

    Thank you for any assistance.

    Threadripper 2950x Workstation

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:59 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm in need of an upgrade urgently.

I am looking to upgrade from my Ryzen 7 1700 to a TR 2950x.

Even with the Ryzen 3900x coming out, do you think an upgrade now to the 2950x will last me a few years of future proofing?

I mostly work in Premiere / Davinci / Aftereffects, but more heavily in Premiere.

Price isn't really an issue, as this is for work, so I don't really mind the price / performance ratio, only really care about overall performance.

    Thanks

Upgrading from 24in/60hz with gtx 1080

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:58 PM PDT

I recently built my first gaming pc with a gtx 1080 inside it to play fps games and assassins creed.

Now i want to upgrade my monitor to a 1440p 144hz display in the 300-500€ range. I was looking for a 31.5in or even an ultrawide 34in, since I watch tv and movies on my pc and i also do programming as well.

I came aross a great deal for a dell s2719dgf however. Now i am not sure what to do. It is a good monitor but i was looking for something bigger.

    What do you guys think?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:43 PM PDT

current MB allows up to a i7-4790k (going from current i3-4130 its still a big upgrade)

    so aroudn 200$ (ish)

or build a modern system for around 500(ish). (aka just cpu/MB and ram)

    Which is better to do

If you have a moment an old gamer could use some advice.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:14 PM PDT

I used to game back in the day when WoW was fairly new and had bought a gaming computer from Ibuypower that was on sale. Basically I'm looking for some advice on how to upgrade it for a decent price rather than buy a whole new system (please let me know if I'm wasting my time). My goal is to be able to play the WoW classic and have settings on high without issues. The graphics card took a dump so I need a new one. Also looking to increase my RAM and need opinions on switching to a SSD. Here's the current specs: Windows 7 Home premium sp1 Intel core i7 cpu 920@2.67ghz Asus p6tse motherboard 6 gigs ddr3 RAM by A-data

On userbenchmark.com I found they suggest the Nvidia1060 6gb graphics card($230) and the 850 Evo 250gb SSD($70). I haven't nailed down which RAM to get but there appear to be several options to add 2x2gig sticks for about $25. There are other graphics cards available for less so part of my question is if there is a cheaper one that's an older model and still meet my goal. And lastly, is it difficult to switch to a SSD? I'm fairly competent and can do some research if anyone can direct me to an internet resource. Thanks in advance for your time and opinions.

What advantages will a typical gamer see with X570?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:36 PM PDT

I'm planning on building a Ryzen 3000 system shortly after launch, targeting one of the CPU's in either the 3600 or 3700 range. Its had me thinking preemptively what mobo/chipset I should target, and I'm kind of at an impasse.

As somebody who uses his PC for browsing and gaming, what advantages will the X570 chipset bring that make it worth the presumed cost-adder versus X470 motherboards? If the old boards ship preemptively updated for PCIE 4.0 support or are upgrade-able out of the box I'd likely have what I need to support a potential PCIE4.0 GPU down the road, and other than that I'm not sure there's much value for a typical end-user. I'm not likely to buy an M2 SSD just to load games, I don't need that sort of data transfer bandwidth. What else is there?
