13km LTE Connection Setup in Zambia Posted: 03 Jun 2019 06:46 AM PDT Hi Reddit Friends, I am trying to improve our LTE connection to our nearest LTE tower in our great country of Zambia! Like I mentioned in the title, the distance is 13km. Currently we are using a Huawei B310s with external antenna. We initially struggled with our signal when the router was indoors. However, I moved the router outdoors under the ledge of our roof. This gave us 4-5 bars and a nice connection. After 4 months of good internet and very few connection drops, our signal deteriorated dramatically and I started calling up our ISP and complained. They eventually sent out a team from Huawei to do a site inspection upon which they mentioned that the distance to the tower could be the main problem. They promised to make some adjustments on the tower to increase the transmission power considering we are in a rural areas as is the LTE tower. I was and still is not convinced that the problem is the distance, but to eliminate it as the cause I moved our router to our water tower for a nice direct line of sight to the tower. Our signal is generally excellent with the router displaying a full 5 bars. Yet, we still experience connection drops. I have attached pictures of our problems to a shared Imgur album. So, to improve our signal (since the ISP is adamant it is the root cause), I decided to invest in larger external antenna. I have settled on a pair of these:https://www.comx-computers.co.za/KB-0727-LTEYAGI-11-Miro-11dBi-SISO-LTE-3G-GSM-External-Buy-p-153270.php To connect them to our router I believe I need these:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Antenna-Coaxial-Pigtail-Length-Ltsstoreuk/dp/B07CH2LL1N Can someone let me know if these components are compatible with the Huawei router? Shipping items from South Africa or Amazon takes about 3-6 weeks, and returning a wrong purchase is not an option for us. Images in the following gallery: [link] [comments] |
Best way to get cables from attic to patch panel? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:53 PM PDT I am getting a home soon and I plan on running cables throughout the home to wall plates, AP's in the ceiling and IP cams on the outside What is the best way to get the cables from the attic down into my rack? Should I run them down the wall, or just out the ceiling? Out the ceiling would be easier, but I am unsure how to get it down there. A pipe? A brush panel? Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:35 PM PDT Hi all -- I know about Tripp Lite, although a poster here was really down on them the other day. Who are some good rack makers? I'm looking at 8U ro 24U. [link] [comments] |
What little projects / tasks could I do with a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall at home? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:26 PM PDT I'm trying to find good use with a Cisco ASA 5505 firewall I picked up from work. Does anyone have any little projects / ideas I can use it for? Anything to further my skills in networking! At home I've also got a catalyst 3750 PoE switch to go with it. Thanks guys [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:23 PM PDT Hi all, I am looking for a good wireless router with WPA3 support for myself and or my family. There does not seem to be much information out there if x router supports it (that or I am just blind) and I was wondering if anyone knows of any good wireless routers. Note that I do not have a price point and thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Need some help wiring the coax cables for MoCA Posted: 03 Jun 2019 06:02 PM PDT Recently bought a set of MoCA adapters, and found our home coax connection was messed up by the DISH guys when we disconnected their service a few years back. Here is our current setup, coax 1 in room 1, this is where the router is, router is connected to MoCA adapter via Ethernet cable, then MoCA adapter connected to coax 1, POE installed. Upstairs we have room with coax 2, this is where the wireless AP will be, MoCA adapter connected to coax 2, POE installed. The part I am struggling with now is how to connect the two coax cables. We have a different coax port just for Comcast internet, which is not connected to the home coax cable system at all, and we do not use the home coax cable system for anything else, so it will be setup just for MoCA purpose. Normally there would be an input cable on the splitter, which I assume is from an outside source, but for our situation(coax cable connected only for MoCA purpose, no external input), would both port 1 and port 2 be connected to output on the splitter, or one is output one is input? Can I connect port 1 and port 2 directly to each other via female to female/bullet connector since I don't need any splitting? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:32 PM PDT Howdy all, will be buying a spool of Cat6 cable soon to upgrade/replace faulty Cat5e cable to my entertainment center, then running to a few more spots while I'm at it. Somethings I've already decided on: -Going with Cat6. Yeah yeah, Cat5e is good enough but I'd rather future proof and go with the faster speed/no worries about longer runs for minimally higher cost. -Going with solid copper wires, no CCW. -Plenum rated. Cables will be close to heat/ac ducts. -Foil shielded. Cables will run close/parallel to electrical lines for a few feet, can't be avoided without tearing up a few walls. So let me ask the experts... what brand name(s) of cable do you trust? I've found trueCABLE on Amazon has good reviews, but there may be better brands I'm not aware of. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
I plan on putting a 60mm fan to my router. Can the motor affect wifi? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 05:41 PM PDT Hi, I have an Inteno DG200-AC provided by my ISP and it gets really hot. It only had a kind of ceramic heatsink on top of the CPU and nothing on top of the rest of the chips, so I put some little heatsinks of the kind you put on a RPi, but the mSATA (or M2) Wi-Fi card already has a little heatsink of the same kind of ceramic that the CPU has, and it gets so hot that it's painful to touch. I want to cool things a bit because the router is a bit unstable and crashes every day or so. I have a bunch of hosts always on on a symmetrical Gigabit connection so the router is pretty stressed most of the day. I want to put a Noctua 60mm 5v fan and plug it through USB and put it on top the Wi-Fi card as is the hottest thing on my router and residual airflow would cool the rest of the stuff. Now, for the real question: Would the motor affect the Wi-Fi signal in a any meaningful way? I could provide pictures but not right now as I'm not at home. If putting a fan on top of the router is cool (pun intended), I would cut a 60mm hole and stick the fan in it. :D [link] [comments] |
Whats a good router for gaming on wifi? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 03:07 PM PDT Edit: Stop suggesting wired connection. I can't do it. I already put that in the post but now its at the top since people still suggested it. I'm getting the worst lag spikes /r/techsupport live chat has told me its simply because I'm using wifi and its unavoidable but I refuse to believe WiFi is simply that garbage in 2019. What is a good router for WiFi and is that likely to get rid of these ping spikes? Some details if you'd like to offer alternative options. I'm literally right below my modem. Like 7 feet away with a floor in between me and the modem. I am using wifi extender but I have the issue with or without the wifi extender. The wifi extender does increase my speeds from like 15/5 to 130/120 though. No I can't use a wired connection. There are apparently high voltage wires or something in the ceiling and they can't drill through it unless they drill in the middle of the living room. The walls are also made of concrete. Bonus question if you're able to answer it. What the fuck is all this? The black one is the router but I have no idea what the rest of it is. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 05:18 PM PDT Hey guys! I need to extend my Ethernet to my pc and decided to use power line. The problem is, I also want a wifi signal for my phone. Are there power line adapters that have wifi built in or is there a different option I should use. I would preferably only use on outlet for this but I can make do. [link] [comments] |
"VPN" Services...shouldn't I be able to remotely access my home network? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 06:58 AM PDT If I use my work's Cisco AnyConnect VPN, I am virtually connected to my company's network and can access local files. When using Nord"VPN", you would assume that a virtual private network would allow you to access your local files. Am I wrong in thinking that this is misleading? In any case, I plan on setting up a home network with a PfSense server, two or three VLANs (on Asus RT-5300 behind ISP modem), NordVPN (on one device only) and remote access to home network. Is there a place I can go to get help on setting this up? Thank you guys in advance...this sub is a great resource. [link] [comments] |
Router/Modem Purchase Questions Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:44 PM PDT Moved to a new house recently and have my gaming PC in the basement. Using Comcast atm and before you say anything, cannot run an ethernet cable down here unfortunately, had new floors installed and dont want to go through that hassel. Currently using the router/modem combo through Comcast and instead of paying the "rental fee" I would like to buy a modem and router and probably a wifi-extender to help with connectivity in the basement. I have been doing some research for a week now and the favorites that I can see are ASUS, Ubiquiti or Netgear Nighthawks. My question is, which one should I get? Are there any bundles out there for all 3 items? Not trying to spend 500 for these expensive routers that I see and with my knowledge of PCs, I know nothing of networks. My main issue is getting wifi in the basement, which as we stand now, it isnt horrible but I believe a wifi extender/repeater would help immensely. Sorry for the inexperienced questions, I just have on idea what to get and what would help me best with the PC being in the basement. Thank you, From a network newb [link] [comments] |
Help With WD My CLoud EX2 Ultra Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:43 PM PDT So my dad's friend/coworker used to worker for WD, and he gave him some nice goodies that he had no idea what to do with, so he passed them on to me. One of the things was a My Cloud EX2 Ultra NAS storage system thing. I really don't know what to use it on or how to use it, but what I am looking to do is store some files on it. I would like to create a backup of my computer and store it on the drive, but I'm having trouble locating where/how to do that from the browser interface. This is what it looks like: https://gyazo.com/82f61cdf4cf4b226c0e89fd7ee2bef63 . Any help is appreciated! Also, if anyone has any suggestions on what I should use this thing for (other than as storage), I would be more than happy to explore that as I have more time now with school done. Need help with selecting modem/router Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:16 PM PDT Hi there, Super new to this. Currently renting my Comcast modem and router all-in-one for $13/month. I have the performance pro plan with 150mbps downloads and 5mpbs uploads. Can anyone suggest a modem and router that are compatible with Comcast and 150mpbs download speeds or higher? Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
35-40 Device, Large House Wifi Network/Mesh Help Needed Posted: 03 Jun 2019 06:27 PM PDT It's official, I need a new wifi system. Advice is what I seek. House is approx 4,000 sqft. Router/Modem is located in an undesirable location upstairs (2nd Floor) on the East side of house. Unfortunately cannot be relocated because I'm stubborn. And at the current point in time isn't financially feasible.Hard-wiring isn't an option. I currently have an Asus RT-AC87U which doesn't seem to be cutting it anymore (Firmware is up to date). Thinking about hopping on the Mesh Network train. Based off some brief research, I'm leaning towards the Ubiquiti Amplifi HD or an eero system. Which one would you lovely folk recommend? Or is there something better that the masses would recommend? Edit: I don't know if this has any relevance, but currently have xfinity 400 Mbps. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2019 05:22 PM PDT Looking to get the ubiquiti usg router and 2 ap lites. My house is a 1200 sq foot bungalow. I'm planning on having one on either side of my house as well as one in my detached garage. I'm hoping this setup will be adequate. I'm curious if I'll need a Poe switch as I'll only be using the two ap lites and from what I've read the come with Poe injectors. Or should I get the switch? Also one of my renovations I installed insulation on the exterior of the house that has a foil. I'm hoping that the router / ap will penetrate through that or sound I consider an additional ap for the yard? Also I posted this in homeautomation and remembered about this sub. Hopefully this isn't an issue. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Am I missing something obvious with my Wifi dropping out? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:56 PM PDT I've had an Asus AC1900 running in my large-ish home for quite a few years with no problems. While the range wasn't the greatest, the connection was rock solid and it easily handled the 22 wifi connections on my network (mostly smart bulbs, but also TV's, a laptop and a couple of Echo Dot's). My house also has a TP-Link wireless range extender that I use to extend the signal into my back yard (latency isn't an issue out there) Due to an unfortunate screw-up, I've recently had to pull my Asus router and replace it with something else. After doing a bit of research and deciding to make this an "upgrade opportunity", I bought a TP-Link AC3150 V2 from Amazon. I got everything synced up and it worked great for about six hours, and then the wifi slowed to a crawl and became unresponsive for many devices. I couldn't even log into the routers administration screens over wifi because the timeouts wouldn't let me past the login boxes. Interestingly, the wired connections worked fine. After fruitlessly playing with it for a little while, I decided that I'd purchased a dud and had Amazon swap it for a new one. Same make, same model, same behavior. Works fine for a few hours and then grinds to a halt. I've turned the individual radios on and off, turned the automatic band selection off to prevent it from merging the radios, I've split the devices between the radios to distribute the load, I've turned MU-MIMO off, I've rotated through every single channel....nothing helps. Wired Internet still runs great though. At this point, I'm about ready to return this one to Amazon as well and pick up a Netgear Nighthawk or an Asus AC2900 router to replace it. But before I do...does anyone have any other suggestions with the TP-Link? This router is very well reviewed and is strongly recommended by a many sites, so I'm confused as to why I'm having so many problems with it. I'm no newbie to wireless networking, but this thing seems like hot garbage to me. What am I missing? [link] [comments] |
Benefits to changing my router? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:28 PM PDT Im currently using a tp-link archer vr900 v1 router attached to my virgin isp router in modem mode. I have just installed a ubiquiti ac pro ap to distribute wife throughout the house. Which im really happy with. I also have wired clients that connect via wired ethernet and an unmanaged switch. Now i am turning my eye towards the router, is it worth changing it, will i see any benefits? I was considering an edgerouter x, but if there would be little benefit i wouldn't bother. I would however be probably like the idea of having the option of being able to use a router level vpn setup in the future. Any advice is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Does anybody know more than the useless CenturyLink Techs? Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:26 PM PDT There is only 1 option for internet at my house. CenturyLink 7Mbps. Anybody know what they are doing when it comes to errors and problems? I have got CenturyLink "techs" to come check it out around 10 times over the past 5 or so years. They do their tests and say it all looks good. It was down 1 day out of the week and another 3 days out of the week it would be .1Mbps or 1000ms ping. Basically, these fucking "techs" are completely clueless and need to go get a job at McDonalds... back to the topic. As of the past few months, the internet cuts out at least 20 times a day(just have to get over my anger). Sometimes it will go down for a minute, sometimes for 20 minutes. There has always been CRAZY amount of errors when you go into the modem/routers web interface. Now, I just got home and internet isn't working. However this time, all the lights that are normally lit on the modem/router are lit. Pings work fine(50ms). But the download/upload is 0/0. There simply is no other option than to throw 500$ a year into something that is worth 50$. I thought that maybe somebody online had connections in the top of the company and could get this shit sorted or knew of some things that I would be able to test/check myself. Here is a screenshot of the errors and such as of right now. 30 minutes after a reboot.(All lights on and pinging google works but no download/upload speed) https://imgur.com/a/Cgt2Fmv [link] [comments] |
New modem / router for Spectrum 100 mbps in 2 story, 2115 sq ft home. Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:22 PM PDT Long post, skip to the final 2 paragraphs if you don't want the background info. We recently switched ISP and upgraded our speed, but my family went ahead with the provided Sagemcom Fast 5260 gateway device. The speed has been great, but we have had lots of Wifi issues. Specifically, upon turning on the TV or attempting to use the internet after a period of unuse the wifi will either: not connect at all until disabling and resetting wifi on devices; or it will go through a 2-3 minute cycle of attempting to connect and disconnecting until it finally fully establishes connection. It does not seem to drop Wifi when used to say, stream a movie however. Additionally the Sagemcom device appears to have the option to change the DNS servers away from Spectrum DNS servers but it does not actually implement the changes put in the GUI. I have had issues on multiple devices connecting to specific sites such as Twitch and Netflix and this resolves after manually changing DNS servers at the phone / computer level. For this reason in addition to the weird connection issues I felt a 3rd party setup was warranted. Typical network activity is browsing, Netflix, twitch streaming, some rare 4k TV streaming, and some light torrenting. Router / modem sits on the first floor and typical users are nearby the modem within 1 room away, but another user is in a room on the 2nd floor of the complete other side of the house. After doing some research I happened upon a Netgear R7000p, Netgear R7800, or Asus RT-AC86U for the router and a TP-Link 7610 as the modem. Note I don't plan on using VPN. I was wanting to confirm that these are still recommended devices and there weren't newer recommendations. The previous posts / articles I have seen with lots of detail are all a few years old with these devices. Additionally, I was wondering if the feature where it auto-assigns 2.4 Ghz or 5 Ghz radios when connecting to a single SSID (I think smart-connect) is recommended. A few articles were talking it up like it was amazing but some reddit posts I saw were saying it was useless. [link] [comments] |
Firmware in Canada for the TP link router Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:21 PM PDT I'm finally getting wired internet to my apartment! (Goodbye wifi booster) I need to buy a new router and I'm confused on what to purchase. My boyfriend and I both play our PlayStations at the same time together and both plan on being plugged in. We live in the country so I feel like the more expensive routers won't be worth it because we won't get the best speed regardless. After looking through lots of reviews, I'm interested in the TP link ac1750 router. All the reviews are mixed from being amazing to absolute garbage. My main concern is people saying you can no longer update firmware if you live in Canada. Is this a big issue? Should I just go for a different router altogether? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Question about using Orbi Router/Modem combo (CBK40 model) with ATT Uverse Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:34 PM PDT Currently use Orbi CBK40 with one Satellite with Xfinity without issues. However, promo period of Xfinity expired and we are moving to a larger house soon, which is why I upgraded to a mesh network. Currently, ATT Uverse is the cheapest price, but I am finding conflicting info online regarding compatibility of Orbi, specifically the CBK40 model, with Uverse. Does anybody have any insight if I will be able to continue using Orbi if we select Uverse? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Looking for a cheap Router/Access Point with Gigabit (+ OpenVPN) Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:01 PM PDT Hey guys at r/HomeNetworking, EDIT: I realize this post got longer than it had to, so I added a TL;DR I live in a flat with 2 other flatmates and the WIFI coverage of the router provided by our ISP is just horrendous... Our rooms are about 10-15m from the router and we can get a faint signal if we stand really close to the rooms door. So we just put some 15m ethernet cables between the rooms to at least supply our PCs with the Internet, which still leaves our phones to just use a mobile connection. Sadly only two of us have the need to upgrade, as the original router is right inside number three's room (which he doesn't have a problem with) so we have a really tight budget (just graduated etc. you know the drill) of about 50€/$ max We would also like to watch some US Netflix on our living room TV and I'm subscribed to NordVPN so I guess something with OpenVPN or OpenWRT/DD-WRT would be nice to have (optional but I'd really appreciate it) We have a 300/20 connection (Which surprisingly always delivers the promised speeds, late at night even up to 420Mb) so Gigabit LAN and Wifi AC (or something that can almost supply that much) are a must for me! The router/access point would be stationed in my room connected to the ISPs router via Ethernet and wouldn't replace it as the LAN works fine! The only thing I'm concerned about is latency from the LAN extension of the daisy chained router (we game a lot). I looked into some options and the ASUS RT-N12 seems like a good fit, right? Do any of you know a router that fits my criteria? I appreciate every answer I get :D TL;DR: Looking for a router under 50€ with WIFI AC + Gigabit LAN + optionally OpenVPN (DD-WRT etc.) that has to cover two rooms about 10m apart [link] [comments] |
COX - Blocking # of Ports Allowed Posted: 03 Jun 2019 11:50 AM PDT Hello, I've got an unusual question for a friend, and wondered if its even possible and how does he get around it. COX( his ISP) has decided to block the # of ports he can create on the router. He run a plethora of servers for games, ARK, ATLAS etc. This new restriction has limited the router to 5 ports. Ex 5 maps for ARK. He can't run anything else anymore with this new change. Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
