    Partitioning

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:25 PM PDT

    Well, this is a new kind of noob.

    I want to install Ubuntu Budgie as dualboot with Windows and have some doubts about partitioning my disk

    I have 1TB (520GB free) of storage.

    I was reading that the /root should be 10GB, and /swap should be x2 my RAM, thing is I have 12GB of RAM, so 24GB of /swap sound like a lot. Should I go on with this? I've even read that /swap isn't needed anymore.

    I'm planning on giving this Linux partition 100GB in total.

    [ThinkPad T420] What version of Debian should I download? I'm interested in Debian Buster but don't exactly know what iso should I download. I just want to make minimal install without any problems and install Polybar with i3.

    Here is my output

    Any help or idea would be great, thanks :)

    Passing through gpu performance in virtual box fox linux

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 11:57 AM PDT

    Hi, for a number of reasons I wanted to run linux in a vm for now (virtual box). Is there any way to pass through the performance of a discrete gpu so that the vm doesn't look very choppy and have limited resolution? Is it possible with one gpu or do you need two? If yes, what is the process?

    Thanks in advance

    Recommended Distro for work

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:28 PM PDT

    I have just gotten approval to run a Linux system for my work laptop last week. Spent the weekend installing Ubuntu 18.04 and all of the software that I need to work in, but have run into a couple of issues.

    Laptop specs: Dell Inspiron 7573, Intel® Core™ i7-8550U, 16GB RAM, Intel® UHD Graphics 620 (Kabylake GT2)

    When I had Windows 10 on here I was able to run 2 additional 3840x2160 monitors via HDMI and USB-C adapter, I am ok with the laptop monitor (is also 3840x2160) and 1 additional monitor that's working at the moment but my issue is that the lock screen takes a few seconds to load and another few seconds to unlock after my password is put in and occasionally the UI is laggy and slow at random times.

    Is this a Gnome issue? What would you guys recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

    Changing how Linux use internet stream.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:02 PM PDT

    I am not sure how to describe it but Linux seems to share internet stream differently than Winblows. Windblows seems to equally share internet power to all programs while Linux is focusing on tasks that are sooner opened totally throbbing previous connections. Example I download something from http and I open youtube playlist. Youtube playlist will steal all resources totally downgrading downloading to 20kb/s instead of sharing equally connection.

    Winblows doesn't have this problem as far as I remember or used on school PCes. Is there any way to change it or manipulate it? (It's Linux there must be a way). I am using newest Debian but I recall Fedora had the same problem. I use Gnome in both cases with Network Manager.

    What do people mean when they refer to stability of the OS? And how significant it is in choosing a desktop or server distro?

    Can't install Void i686 on ThinkPad T41

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 09:02 AM PDT

    Hi, I'm having a problem with installing Void on my ThinkPad T41. My first problem was with PAE, because my CPU doesn't display the PAE flag, but it supports it, so I fixed that with forcepae -- forcepae in boot options, but then I get this error:

    "Dualboot" with windows in an external hard drive.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:46 PM PDT

    I was curious. I have three drive : an internal hdd (linux home), a msata ssd (root) and an external hard drive (windows).

    I hate dualboot cause windows will often make this more or less complicated, so I decided to install it in an external hard drive to have some peace of mind. Still, some people said to me that windows could still influence my internal hard drive by creating or even ereasing some partitions, if not the entire drive.

    I make windows as an external OS to be sure it could not influence my linux OS, but now, I'm not sure what to think... Am I sure that Windows can't interect with my msata and internal hard drive ?

    Thx !

    Looking for a distro for an old Compaq (HP) laptop

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:22 PM PDT

    Hello, I was looking for a light distro to install on this laptop. I haven't used it in a while now and I thought about installing linux on it to see if I could use it for basic browsing and that kind of stuff. It'd be the first time I use/install linux (except android roms if that counts) so I don't really know which one would be best. I just would like it to be as fast as possible, decent looking and with good compatibility. What do you recommend?

    Currently on Windows 10, it runs extremely slow.

    Computer specs:

    AMD E-350 1.30GHz

    2GB RAM

    Hitachi HTS543232A7A384 (320gb 5400rpm HDD)

    Thanks!

    19 Mint Cinnamon won’t connect to school WiFi

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 11:24 AM PDT

    I am able to connect to my home WiFi that is password protected, and the school guest WiFi, but when trying to connect to the school's student WiFi which requires a login, it does nothing.

    I see the WiFi name but when I click on it to connect it just displays a spin icon and then quits.

    I've logged into this WiFi plenty of times on manjaro and windows but now suddenly cannot on mint cinnamon

    Adobe on Linux?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:49 PM PDT

    Probably asked before. I've been looking all over Reddit trying to find out if it's possible to have some Adobe software. I know Photoshop works, as well as Lightroom. But I really need Premiere and After Effects. I read somewhere (can't find it) that a direct WINE installation won't work, but importing the files from a VM or dualboot does work. First of all, I don't know how to do that or if that is true. That is something keeping me from moving to Linux.

    Thanks.

    EDIT: Supposedly works by importing the program's files folder into Wine prefix or whatever, I'm like a new level of newbie.

    [hardware] Looking for a good all-round laptop; does it make sense to spend more than ~€550?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:15 AM PDT

    I'm a casual computer user and recent Linux convert. I currently use my laptop (Xubuntu) for office work, internet browsing, movie watching and occasionally some light image/sound editing. However, my oldtimer got a beautiful vertical line on its screen today, so I figured it's time to look for a new machine.

    I have my eye on the Dell Inspiron 15 3585, which is sold in a local shop with Ubuntu preinstalled, for around €520 (~$580):

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2500U
    • RAM: 8 GB
    • SSD: 256 GB

    I'm wondering if there's any sense in going higher-end than this, considering my primary concerns:

    • General usability – being able to run multiple programs simultaneously without delays (I don't expect this to be a problem);
    • Longevity – in three years, I'd still like my machine to run smoothly and not fall apart;
    • Keyboard feedback – no, I'm serious, a keyboard with serious feedback is so much better to type on. I can't find any info on the Dell keyboard, but from the pictures it looks somewhat flimsy.

    Any kind of suggestions or advice is welcome!

    Oh, and a final noob question: I've read that AMD will release its next gen CPU's on July 7th. So would it be smart to wait until then and get a laptop with a better CPU for approximately the same price?

    Security in Linux

    Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:50 PM PDT

    Hello, I've just started using Linux for the first time 2 days ago (I installed Linux Mint). Although everyone says Linux is more secure than other OS and doesn't need any programs for malware etc. I still wanted to ask you guys if you had any tips for a newbie regarding security in general. Thanks for the advice!

    EDIT: By the way, I've recently bought ExpressVPN but the internet connection seems a little slow in some cases (I can't connect to some websites, Netflix doesn't work, Spotify fails to connect sometimes etc.) do you think it's a good VPN for Linux Mint or should I use something else instead?

    Implications on changing systemd (Debian)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:13 AM PDT

    Hello,

    I recently decided to read on the fuzz about systemd, which lead me to http://without-systemd.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page I don't understand all bits and bobs but it has piqued my interest enough to try make the change to sysvinit or other init system. However, there are several questions that perhaps some people here could help me with. At the moment I am using Debian sid and ideally I would either change to Devuan or try to swap systemd in my current setup.

    What are the implications of such change? Is Gnome so entagled that won't work at all if systemd is not present? If so, is xfce the best alternative for compatibility (is the other desktop-env I use the most after Gnome)? What is the actual time difference in repos between Debian sid and Devuan ceres? What are the major difficulties that could be found once the switch is over? And the last, and probably the one that concerns me the most, what consequences could that have when gaming?

    Thanks!

    Does anyone know how to install two versions of CUDA on the same machine?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 07:07 AM PDT

    I currently have CUDA version 10.0 installed on my computer and its corresponding version of CUDNN. However, I need to install CUDA 9.0 and its corresponding version of CUDNN without messing up the whole thing (it has happened with me once before that I had two or maybe three versions of CUDA on my machine and tensorflow could never compile)

    All I need to do is have two different versions of CUDA and I have learnt that it is possible, but the articles I have found are confusing me.

    I am running Ubuntu 18.04 btw,

    Running i3wm with a HiDPI laptop and a low DPI external monitor?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 06:55 AM PDT

    Okay so I have this weird question: I have a HiDPI laptop (3200x1800) running Manjaro with i3-gaps. No issues so far, display is scaling perfectly because I added dpi=192 to my Xresources file. However, I have an external monitor with low DPI (1920x1080) that I'm using when I'm on my windows partition, but since I'm way more often on linux than windows I want to make it work properly but I can't wrap my head arount it.

    Whenever I plug it in I have this issue where everything on the low DPI screen is completely out of scale and both displays are "cut" in such a way that what is supposed to be displayed is not fitting any of the screens properly. Is there a way to work around this issue?

    Bash script is giving error "unexpected operator" but i can't solve the errors

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 06:47 AM PDT

    Goal of the script

    Create folders and files dinamically by receiving a file as input, loop through each line, do some modifications to its content and then create folders and files with that content as name.

    Here is the code:

    Note: The errors that are being thrown are in comment after the lines

    I also have it on pastebin link

    ```
    !/bin/bash
    FILE=$1 echo "$FILE" while read p; do echo "fullLineCntn: $p\n" firstChar="$(echo $p | head -c 1)" secondChar="$(echo "$p" | head -c 2 | tail -c 1)" lastFolder="" dirLevel=0 folderName="" fileName="" echo "---------------------- \n" echo "DirLevel: $dirLevel" if [ $firstChar = "#" ] # Error (its thrown only on 4th loop): [: =: unexpected operator then if [ $secondChar = "#" ] # Error: [: =: unexpected operator then # heading 2 echo "heading2:\n"
     if [ $dirLevel == 2 ] # Error: [: 0: unexpected operator then cd .. fi folderName="$(echo "$p" | cut -c 4-)" mkdir "$folderName" cd "$folderName" dirLevel=2 else # heading 1 echo "heading1:\n" if [ $dirLevel = 1 ] then cd .. else if [ $dirLevel == 2 ] # [: 0: unexpected operator then cd .. && cd .. fi fi folderName="$(echo "$p" | cut -c 3-)" mkdir "$folderName" cd "$folderName" dirLevel=1 fi
    else # Create file fileName="$(echo "$p" | cut -c 7-)" touch "$fileName.txt" fi
    done <$FILE
    ```

    Here is an example of a file input

    ```
    Header_one_folder
    • [ ] file_1
    • [x] file_2
    Header_one_v2_folder
    • [ ] file_1
    • [x] file_2
    Header_two_v1_folder
    • [ ] file_1
    • [x] file_2
    Header_one_v3_folder
    • [ ] file_1
    • [x] file_2
    Header_two_v2_folder
    • [ ] file_1
    • [x] file_2
    ```

    Command example

    sh myScript.sh inputFile.txt

    Expected output

    | |- myScript.sh |- inputFile.txt |__ Header_one_folder |- file_1.txt |- file_2.txt |__ Header_one_v2_folder |__ Header_two_v1_folder |- file_1.txt |- file_2.txt |__ Header_one_v3_folder |__ Header_two_v2_folder |- file_1.txt |- file_2.txt What am i doing wrong ? How can i achieve this?

    My PC running Ubuntu doesn't want to turn on

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 06:23 AM PDT

    I've used a lot of distros: Manjaro, Deepin, Antergos, Debian, K/Lubuntu and finally I decided to try Ubuntu. But I'm having some troubles turning on my PC. It works just fine with other distros, but with ubuntu the login screen never appears. It does like this: - Acer boot logo appears - Screen turns purple - Screen turns black - Brightness gets very low - Screen turns purple again, nothing happens. Even after lots of restarts it doesn't work. I can manage to make it work but it's random.

    Some details: - Intel CPU & GPU - Latest Ubuntu version - No HDMI-out plugged when turning on - Settings: when HDMI is plugged in, it outputs on it everything and it doesn't use the built in laptop's screen.

    Thanks so much! If you need some more infos, feel free to ask.

    Dual booting with an ssd and hdd

    Posted: 03 Jun 2019 05:45 AM PDT

    Hi, I have an ssd and hdd on my laptop, my ssd holds my windows 10, do I need to partition my hdd to put ubuntu on it and follow up question, I currently run ubuntu on a vm is there anyway i can put the vm as it is, with all the downloaded software etc as my dual boot ubuntu rather than starting afresh, I hope I'm making sense, thank you.

    edit: I'm also considering completely moving my windows to my hdd and having the ssd be just for linux is this a good idea?
