Laptop recommends to finish school? Sub 300$ Posted: 03 Jun 2019 12:20 AM PDT Hello. My old samsung rv510 bit the dust this past weekend. I am currently finishing my BSN (nursing school) and do mainly word and write papers. My spouse is finishing her second degree and will use mainly word and power point. I'm not sure what option to go with. I don't have a preference on 2 in 1. Ive looked at chromebooks but get worried about the minimalist of the microsoft apps with chrome OS. I really want the ability to use microsoft word, ppt, etc with ease while using the internet and stream videos (for class/ research etc) simultaneously. Whats the best bang for my buck? -Total budget and country of purchase: <300 , USA -Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Best specs and battery would be good. -How important is weight and thinness to you? Nice but not important. -Which OS do you require? Windows. Unless sold on another -Do you have a preferred screen size? 11-14" -Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Not likely -List which programs/games you desire to run. Word , ppt, excel
Maybe light leisure games. -Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard and touchpad -Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just reliable and cost friendly to make doing homework less of a task. Looking for a laptop I can carry to work Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:35 AM PDT hi /r/suggestalaptop, I posted previously asking for recommendations but having looked at the options recommended I decided I should refine my requirements a little.
~900 USD/~100,000JPY, Japan (but probably buying online to get a more familiar keyboard layout).
2-in-1 form factor is not necessary and battery life is not a major concern. Better specs preferred (Intel Core i5 and 8GB of RAM were recommended to be as a baseline.)
I usually walk half an hour to work, so the lighter, the better.
N/A (at home I'll be plugging into a monitor and work screen size is unimportant).
Adobe Lightroom.
N/A
When I posted previously I had a long list of things I wanted which led to recommendations that were a little too heavy. I figure I can mitigate this by getting a USB hub for home use and go without most of the time. Definite requirements: Ethernet port At least 1 USB-A input At least 1 USB-C input HDMI cable or VGA cable input Headphone jack Can compromise on, but would prefer not to: Standard SD card slot Not required on the go: Optical drive Further USB-A inputs (up to 4)
Storage is not a major consideration, I don't need a great deal on the go and I'll be using an external hard drive at home. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for College and Gaming(?) Posted: 02 Jun 2019 02:08 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: US. 1000$ Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Might prefer a 2 in 1 form to take notes on. Good emphasis on battery life and specs for performance. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows proffered. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A but nothing too small. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Might be doing programming. If the laptop suits it, would love to do some gaming (League of Legends, Overwatch, nothing too intense) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League and Overwatch, definitely want to able to run at good visual settings (having been playing with sliders on "very low" for far too long. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A low-profile gaming laptop for college Posted: 02 Jun 2019 09:36 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: MYR6000, Malaysia Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life should be at least 3-4 hours, so I'm looking for something with a 48Wh or bigger battery. As long as I get at least a quad-core and a GTX1060 (doesn't matter if it is max-q) I'm fine with it. How important is weight and thinness to you? My parents recommend laptops below 2.5kg. They say it's better for my spine. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Why would I use MacOS or Linux anyway? Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" because it's the optimal size for a gaming laptop. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Usually World of Warships, CSGO, LOL and some AAA games like Sekiro. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? FIFA, Sekiro and Total War: Three Kingdoms, at 1080p medium (at least). Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** 120Hz/144Hz IPS screen with good color coverage. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want something as low profile as possible while maintaining good performance. I am considering ASUS FX505GM, Lenovo Legion Y530 and Dell G3. All of these laptops have i7-8750H and GTX1060, but G3 has the best battery (56Wh), Legion has the best screen(144Hz IPS/72% NTSC), while ASUS is the most easily upgradable (it has a 120Hz screen as well). Laptop for a .NET and C++ developer ($1500-$2000 CAD) Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:16 PM PDT My current laptop is a year old Asus UX430UA. It has a screen flickering issue that Best Buy made worse (long story). I needed to upgrade anyway. Total budget and country of purchase: $1500-$2000 CAD Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? I'd like to avoid a 2 in 1 if possible, and portability and good battery life (>9 hours) is a must. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important Which OS do you require? Windows or Linux, I'll dual boot anyway. Do you have a preferred screen size? 13.3"-15", preferably >14" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Must have good build quality, preferably a fingerprint reader, and a decent keyboard and touch pad (doesn't have to be exceptional). Touch screen isn't necessary, I wouldn't use it anyway. Also, 16 GB of RAM would be good, but I can get by with 8. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The reason I need Nvidia graphics is because I do CUDA programming. My current laptop has Intel UHD 620 which is decent, but it's a pain to not be able to test my CUDA applications. I was looking at the new Asus Zephyrus (with a 1660 Ti) and various Razers, which I was thinking I could underclock to get better battery life. [link] [comments] |

Purchasing in Australia, soft budget of roughly AUD$2000, can go over couple hundred if need be. (So I'm guessing around USD1000-1500 approx.)
This will be my only system, so it'll sit on my desk most of the time, with it being carried to uni maybe once to twice a week, so battery life is not a huge concern. Looking for a laptop with a great screen, decent build quality, non-gamer aesthetic, preferably 8th gen i5 or i7 and with a GTX1050->1060 level of graphics.
Not hugely important, it will be on my desk plugged in most of the time. Just not too aesthetically chunky
Windows
14 or 15 inch display.
For study and personal use I heavily utilise Photoshop, alongside a decent amount of After Effects and Premiere. I do want to game on this laptop as it'll be my only system. I don't play anything too heavy though only stuff like Overwatch, Cities: Skylines, Stardew Valley, and other indie games. I am looking to perhaps get into more demanding games however but it's not a priority.
Ideally 60fps on light titles @ medium-high settings. I am currently using an extremely outdated laptop so I am very acquainted with playing even games such as Overwatch @40fps @lowest settings. Anything above gtx1060 is probably overkill for me.
Aesthetics are important to me, I really despise black&red gamer looking laptops so none of those please. In regards to build quality as long as it will feel solid on the desktop and not too flimsy I'll be okay with. Keyboard and touchpad I'm okay with anything as long as they're not horrible. Biggest deal-breaker is the screen - I really would like a color accurate IPS screen as I do a lot of illustration, animation, and visual effects work.
I've done my research and I am really liking the Lenovo Y730 but that doesn't seem like it's available anymore. The MSI P65 Creator (basically a MSI GS65 with a 1060 I've heard) is also on my radar, alongside the Dell XPS15 but I've heard issues of it overheating even when doing day-to-day tasks. Any advice is appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |

Replacement Cord for Gigbayte Aero 15 Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:29 PM PDT I bought an Aero 15 off Amazon and had it shipped to my home outside the US and need to get a replacement cord to connect into the brick but wasn't sure what to look for. The power brick model is Chicony A17-230P1A and the wall cord is an i-sheng SP-305B. My question is will any cord that connects to my wall socket into the C13 socket on the brick work just fine? Also does the fact mains voltage in my country is 240V not the 100V in the US matter? [link] [comments] |

Dell XPS 15 vs lg gram 17 (or anything else you'd suggest) Posted: 02 Jun 2019 10:44 PM PDT I am looking for a laptop to use in college (incoming CS major). I have a really powerful PC I'll be bringing for gaming, so this is more of a work specific/very light gaming. The gram doesn't have graphics besides intel's but I think that should be ok. The main things I look for are a nice screen size, resolution, and battery life. What do you guys think?
~1600, USA
NOT a 2 in 1 or touch screen, I look for battery life and screen size mainly.
15 or 17
Light gaming (csgo, Minecraft, etc.) And coding (see major)
Thank you so much! Any help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for CS and School in general Posted: 02 Jun 2019 11:06 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: US. $1200 Max of $1500 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'd like decently good specs (something like an i5/i7, preferably 16GB of ram, preferably ssd boot drive and at least 1/2 TB of storage, etc). Good battery life and I was thinking a 2 in 1 may be nice for notes. How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd prefer it to be a thinner laptop (in the ideal world). I don't really care too much about weight as long as its not way excessive) Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows - I may dual boot Linux later but idk. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not really but was probably thinking between 14"-16" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd primarily be doing programming (some semi-intensive stuff probs). And maybe light gaming. Emphasis on maybe. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not really a concern as elaborated in the last section. I just want it to be able to run things decently. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard would be nice. Same with build quality and touch-screen (for notes). I dont really care for a fingerprint reader. I dont need an optical drive. An Ethernet port would be nice but if it has a usb c and I just need a converter thats fine I guess. Would also want at least one normal usb port (preferably 3.0). Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was looking at Lenovo primarily (yoga 730, c930 etc). However, I'm still open to other ideas. One note is that I do have a desktop I built that I'd plan on using for my most intensive stuff (like AI, games etc) (i5-8400 and RTX 2060). So I don't need the laptop to have insane specs. But I dont want to be too limited as I'll want to do programming throughout the day when Im away from the desktop. [link] [comments] |

$500-800, USA for an Aerospace Engineering college freshman Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:42 PM PDT * Total budget and country of purchase: $500-800, USA * Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and good specs/dollar are important, a 2 in 1 would be a bonus * How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is important, going to be carrying it in a backpack all day (college student, studying aerospace engineering) * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Somewhere around 13-15 inches * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD, light gaming. Undergraduate aerospace engineering student, not sure what programs I will need to run yet. * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft, but just about any potato can do that anyway. I'll honestly just take whatever games I can with the hardware. * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent keyboard and trackpad would be good, touch screen and finger print reader would be nice extras. * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Going into my first year as a college student (studying aerospace engineering, I know you're already tired of hearing it) so any laptop buying tips with that in mind would be a huge help. Laptop suggestions for gaming and school ~$1000 in the US Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:24 PM PDT
~1000 in the United States
No 2 in 1, but battery life and specs are preferred
Average weight and thinness are preferred but not necessary
Windows, please
Prefer 15" since that's what I'm used to
Gaming, perhaps video editing but that's unlikely. Maybe streaming too
I'll likely play anything from Stardew Valley to Final Fantasy 15. I'm sure laptops are limited in performance, though.
Any of the special additions such as touch-screen or finger-print reader aren't necessary. Basics that you'd expect such as headphone jack, multiple usb ports, lan, hdmi ports are a must. Maybe a web-cam and mic too
From my understanding, "gaming laptop" is really a catch-all title for really good laptops with high-end graphics and audio. I don't have anything specific in mind when it comes to schoolwork, just that I'd be able to use it for schoolwork. I'm sure that's probably an obvious inclusion since all I'd really need for schoolwork is word processing. That aside, my general computer habits includes having at least 3 chrome tabs open at a time while one of them is a twitch stream and I'm playing League of Legends as well. My current laptop is maybe 7 years old with a cracked screen so I'm using a usb laptop, speakers, and monitor. I'm not even sure that I could tell the difference between a $1000 laptop and anything else that's better than what I have lol Anything else you need to know about me and my computer habits, just ask. Mobile business in farm setting Posted: 02 Jun 2019 08:53 PM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Canada - Expecting to spend around $1,000, and would like to stay under $1,500. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 2 in 1 not required. Good battery life is very important. "Value" is less of concern, as long as it's a good laptop. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not important * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Indifferent, but would like a keyboard with a numeric keypad. Expecting 15" or larger. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** No. Business programs, browsing, and simple databases. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** N/A * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Back lit keyboard preferred but not required. Would like a solid/rugged build, at least not prone to breaking. Will be used outdoors, in vehicles, in farm environments, as well as home office. Finger print reader and optical drive not required. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Strong preference for SSD. Do not want delays with slow startups and program loading. Files will be backed up to cloud and physically at home, so large SSD not required. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
MacBook Air for Twitch Broadcast? (video-only) Posted: 02 Jun 2019 08:45 PM PDT WHAT I AM BROADCASTING: I would like to start broadcasting something in Twitch's Just Chatting section. I have a webcam, mic, bla bla, but was wondering if a MacBook Air would suffice? I would eventually like to do some light video editing which made me wonder if I should go with a MacBook Pro (what I currently have, but it's old). QUESTION: Is the Air sufficient for a video/audio only broadcast? Not planning on broadcasting any gameplay. WHAT I HAD IN MIND: Looking at the MacBook Air: https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-air/space-gray-1.6ghz-dual-core-processor-with-turbo-boost-up-to-3.6ghz-256gb# 1.6GHz dual‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz Retina display 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory 256GB SSD storage Intel UHD Graphics 617 [link] [comments] |
