Can I get 10Gb Ethernet between two devices with this? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:58 PM PDT I'm using this for my POE devices but I'd really like to plug my home sever into this at 10Gb of some variety, and so the same with my workstation so I can maybe offload all my spinning disc data to the server. Looking at the specs, I can't make heads or tails of the odd ports on the right side. What are they and what cards do I need to get for my systems? They're about 30 feet from the switch, as the cable runs. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:54 AM PDT I even made a direct link to my PC and ps4 in my gaming room as the connection as speed are phenomenal! So happy I did some research here, as the WiFi extender was indeed not a great idea as my WiFi connection to begin was quite poor. Of course, direct, physical connections would be even better but I'm not going though expensive renovations anytime soon so network adapters were a perfect solution. [link] [comments] |
Can I use these phone jacks as ethernet? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 10:41 AM PDT Hi. I am upgrading my new house, planning to make add access points and few ethernet jacks to my network and security camera system. I am not very familiar with wiring/networking. Every room is suppied with a phone jack (pics attached in link below). Can I use this cable for Access Point or any other "up-to-date" sytem? [link] [comments] |
Copper or Fiber Cables? Planning the best setup for my house! Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:12 PM PDT Hi my dear Networking friends! First I wanna say that I am by no means an expert and so you should treat what I say in the post accordingly. Now here is what I wanna do: I do have a House with 4 Floors (the 4th one is the attic) which was built in the 70s and I am planning on renovating it. In the course of this renovation I want to "further proof" my networking. My Modem and my router will be stationed in my Garage in a server rack with my home server. Now I have 2 Ideas of how to do this: Idea Nr. 1: This is the simpler Idea where I just mount a switch and a few patch panels and run several cables into each room of the house probably through the attic down a central cable channel and then split of every cable where I need it to go. Now the upside of this is that everything is in a centralized place and nearly every client connected will have the full bandwidth because almost every device connected will have its own cable. The downside however is that I want to run several cables into each room which would mean the central cable channel would have to be big enough for around 50 cables. In addition this house has concrete walls (I live in Austria, Europe just mentioning this for our american friends) and since I want to future proof the system I would have to embed cable channels into the walls so that the cables might be replace once they are outdated without cutting open every wall then then plaster (ohhh I hope this is the right word) them closed every time. This would also make it really hard to pull a cable through because the run would be from the garage up to the attic (probably on the outside) and then down into the room. Idea Nr 2: This one is a bit more exotic for home use. I get 4 Fiber cables that and run them from the garage to every floor of the house and then get a switch for every floor and run copper cables from the switches to the outlets. This would give me future proving in the sense that I will never have to replace the fiber cable for another cable and the cable channels for the copper cables would be shorter thus easier to pull a new one through once they are outdated. On the other hand this leaves me with a switch and a converter unit in each floor that I have to hide/make space for and I still have to do cable channels throughout every floor anyways because I cant just connect every outlet with fiber (the converter units and switches for fiber are just to damn expensive for 50 of them). In addition the bandwidth of the devices on every floor will be limited by the hardware of the converter and the ones I found that do 10G are extremely expensive. What am I saying they are just too damn expensive for home use. Now I would like some input from you guys what you think, what you would do and how likely you think it is that I will ever have to replace the cat 7 cables anyways and of course please tell me if I have made a mistake in my planning or missed a better solution. I personally do not think that I will have to replace the Cat 7 cables anyways because if I am not mistaken they do 40Gbit/s and almost every home device still runs on 1Gbit/s but then again when my Grandparents built this house they didnt every know that there will be the need of networking cables in the house at all so I guess everything is possible. And since the whole point is to make it further proof so that in 30-50 years I dont have to open up every wall again and get new cables in I thought about how to do it so that I never have to do it again. And of there is the added benefit that heaving 3-4 RJ45 outlets in every room just makes it super easy to connect new devices without having to run cables across the room or installing switches. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:58 PM PDT Moving into a new apartment soon and plan on upgrading wifi to suddenlink's 1 Gig internet plan. The apartment is about 1500sq feet with 2 floors. House will consist of two gaming systems probably running simultaneously. After reading through other post seems like the Arris Surfboard (SBG10) will be the modem of choice since a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and router are required. My question is what router would pair well with this? The systems will be in adjacent rooms so I will be able to wire them directly to the router and the only thing that would really be needing wifi downstairs would be a smart tv. Note I'm not extremely familiar with setting up home networks but know enough to get me by Thanks [link] [comments] |
Spectrum Wave 2 Router and Linksys RE6400 WiFi extender issues. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:40 PM PDT First off, I'm a total noob at this. I've tried contacting their customer support and looking all over the internet for articles, but haven't found anything that works yet. I'm afraid it's just a hardware issue, but hopefully not. I set up my Linksys router using the WPS buttons on both for both my 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi channels. Everything seems great and the extender shows it's connected and running great. I am even able to choose and connect to the EXT versions of my previous 2.4 and 5ghz channels on my phone. Problem is that when I choose either, It doesn't allow me to load any webpages or anything online. It shows full WiFi signal bars, but nothing will load when I use those EXT channels. Has anyone else had this issue and solved it? Or know how I could? Currently, I have both the Spectrum router webpage open as well as the Linksys Extender device page open. I am willing and prepared to send any relevant information to help. Again, I'm a total noob. [link] [comments] |
2 types of ports in house but only one works Posted: 02 Jun 2019 07:26 PM PDT Hi I'm relatively new at this, but have some knowledge (I think). I've moved into a new house where we have Ethernet ports in almost every room. The ones by main tv areas have 2 cables for tv and 2 ports for Ethernet. These ports are associated with the 4 cables that connect to my modem/router. These have connections, but my problem is that the other ports in rooms have no connection. They are labeled as cat5e and I've confirmed by looking at the wiring that they are correct. In the box where all this connects though are no cables for these rooms with the single port. I would post pictures but for some reason can't post images. There is a phone tm1405 or something in there but connecting that did nothing. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Connecting 2 Computers with Cat5 Unidentified Network Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:24 PM PDT I'm simply trying to connect my laptop to my desktop with cat5 so I can connect 2 softwares. The network shows as unidentified which is preventing me from changing the connection to a private network. I have turned off my private network firewall on both machines. What am I missing here? Been struggling with this for a few days. I have my IP address set to obtain automatically. [link] [comments] |
Extending wifi with installed cat5 jacks Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:50 PM PDT Hello, I recently purchased a home, and the previous owner had the house wired with cat5 outlets. The back of the house gets really weak signal, but the front of the house(closest to the router - Asus ac1900) is great. I'm looking over some options and I came across this article that talks about using a secondary router to extend the coverage. I'm wondering if this is a good solution or if there are other options to consider. My basic setup would be cable modem - ac1900 - cat5 through the call box - cat5 to other router (recommendations?) and then wifi from there. Does this create a secondary network? It doesn't seem like it would, but I'm inexperienced with this kind of setup. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!, [link] [comments] |
router->switch0->switch1, switch1 doesn't have any network connection Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:23 PM PDT Both switches are TL-SG1024s. If I plug a machine into the cable running between the two switches, it has internet access. Machines plugged into switch1 however have none, nor network access. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Separate 5ghz SSID? Conflicting info online. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 06:02 PM PDT I've read conflicting opinions about whether to share the same SSID for 5ghz and 2.4ghz. Apparently iOS devices will work fine (ie pick 5ghz when in range), while others will always connect to 2.4. Obviously for convenience, having a single SSID does seem optimal. What is the latest recommendation on this kind of configuration?? About to pick up some Unifi hardware to beef up the connection at home... [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:29 PM PDT I have 1 pc, a newer Thinkpad, with an Intel 8265 wifi card. This pc, and only this pc, is getting low bandwidth. All other devices on my network get 175Mbps to 222Mbps. However, my Thinkpad only gets 16Mbps. It seems to be getting throttled for some reason. I have another Thinkpad with the exact Intel 8265 card that get's 175Mbps. It has the exact same drivers and almost the exact same software. I have tried the following:

Modem to Router drops Ethernet connection Posted: 02 Jun 2019 05:14 PM PDT Hi - Lately my WiFi will randomly drop because my Router drops Ethernet connection to my Modem (modem stays connected to internet, but the Ethernet light stops blinking). Wired connections through the router also stop working. I have a dual band Belkin router (N450 DB). I have an old Ubee modem (DDM3513) that's been trucking along for quite a few years (thinking about upgrading soon but it's been working until recently). Anyway, is there any way to know if this is a router failure or a modem failure? I have another router (Buffalo AirStation) but I haven't had success hooking it up to my modem either. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 04:46 PM PDT If I'm dead set on a gateway and want to maximize speed while keeping cost under 150 on eBay. What would be the best device? I looked at surfboard sbg7580-ac and saw the critiques of its chipset. Are there Broadcom gateways in the same speed range? [link] [comments] |
Best practice for naming multiple NIC Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:39 PM PDT My main machine has two physical ethernet sockets. I intend one for normal surfing, email and the like, but the other for intranet data use. What do you tend to name/alias them in an corporate setting for ease of use, DNS etc. I guess they should all report to the DHCP server as the same as the host name, but then again each physical connection will have multiple and dynamic (privacy) addresses under IPv6. Do you give each MAC address an alias name so you can see which one of sending the packets in wireshark? Or just do it purely on MAC address, without alias names? Someone put me out of my minor misery, please? Thank-you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Routers with similar range to Ubiquiti AP Long range? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:22 PM PDT I rent a house and have my router close to the very front, 2nd story. It's 2500sq ft. My router struggles to provide strong signal to the living room near the back of the house. I want to install an AP near the center but my landlord won't allow it. I almost just want to try the Ubiquiti AP and sit it next to my router, but that defeats the point of an AP right? Might as well buy a new router with similar range as the AP Idk, what do you guys think? Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Help with my home network - 3/4G Router? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 03:18 PM PDT Hello all. I have the Modem of my internet supplier, and it's connected through the powerline to another room with this Edimax and then to this 3G/4G TP-LINK that spreads WIFI and is connected wired-ly to a PC. It was all setup by a so called computers expert. It's not working smoothly so I checked about it and to my understanding there is a need for a WIFI router, while the one I have is a cellular one' and is under the "Modems/Gateways" category in TP-LINK's website. Also curious about the difference. Anyhow, would be happy to get some help and also have this explained..! Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2019 02:41 PM PDT To start, I know enough about networking to know I don't know much...so please bear with me! Last fall I switched from Comcast to ATT fiber. The tech installed the ONT box and modem in my laundry room. The laundry room is an addition to my house and not hooked up to the HVAC. Living in the southeastern US, it gets super hot in there. I contacted ATT about moving it and they said they'd send a tech out but it may cost me $100+. I don't really care about where the ONT box is located, I really just want the modem "inside". I have a long Ethernet cable already, so I was thinking I'd just run the cable from the laundry room to the living room and move the modem into the living room.

Configuring router QOS for Gaming or specific device Posted: 02 Jun 2019 02:24 PM PDT Hello guys, I use my mobile phone for gaming, specifically for playing PUBG Mobile :) and its really important to have good latency/ping while playing or else the game becomes unplayable. some info about my setup Connection: 15 download/ 1 upload Router: ZTE ZXHN H108N V2.5 I know not the best connection and not the best router but they work pretty well and normally I get ping like 54, 60, 64, 70, 76, 80 which is really good for me if things remain that way, the problem is that if anyone is using the connection while I am gaming that's when things go crazy, pink spikes sometimes to 150, 200 that's on a good occasion and goes to 300, 450, 650, 850, 950 sometimes and that puzzles the heck out of my brains why that happen. anyway now to my understanding QOS can help, it might not completely get rid of this issue but if it helps in anyway I am willing to try/implement for the sake of improving things, now this is where things gets interesting is that my router QOS is not the best ones you can find but I have been messing around with them and I managed to get things improving but I am not a tech guy and I never like things that I can't understand so this is why I am here, hoping to get the right info about what exactly I should set to achieve what I need to hopefully improve things while gaming on my mobile phone, below is my QOS settings that I can find in my router page, please let me know what is your thoughts. this is for a tab called Classification https://ibb.co/9H6HS1s this is for a tab called Queue management https://ibb.co/YZWGsHP this is for a tab called Commited access rate https://ibb.co/ZcYBrzc [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Jun 2019 01:30 PM PDT Hey Everyone, I would like to put a coaxial cable into my room from the networking box that is located outside. As of right now, one coaxial cable goes from the networking box to another room on the same floor as mine. I researched some and found out about MoCA devices which can convert a coax cable to ethernet, however they all mentioned going to a router. I wanted to know if I could route the MoCA adapter directly to my desktop? Or is it required to involve a router? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Is there a NAS operating system that can handle ripping CDs/DVDs directly to the NAS? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:42 PM PDT So I'm building a NAS out of an old tower that includes a DVD drive. While I'm looking forward to the convenience of having my movies etc on my network, I'm not looking forward to the process of ripping and uploading my library to the NAS. Is it possible to skip a step here and use the DVD drive in my to-be NAS to rip my media directly to the NAS, or is that a crazy dream beyond the expertise of an eager amateur? Thanks. Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:30 PM PDT My NVR went out and I'm going to do a custom setup this time so I need a POE switch. All it is going to be used for is security cameras with no crazy setup so the wattage doesn't need to be real high. I'd prefer 16 ports, quiet and cheap. It's going to most likely live in a living room or a bedroom. Used is perfectly fine. Bonus points for a decent GUI. [link] [comments] |
Asus RT-5300 to Asus AX-11000? Posted: 02 Jun 2019 12:01 PM PDT My Asus Rt-5300 router is about 4 years old. My wifi speeds are not the best and my 5 ghz actually really sucks. Was thinking about picking up the Asus AX-11000. I have Comcast 1GB down load speed and was wondering if this router would be great for faster wired speeds as well as wireless speeds. I have about 25 devices on my wifi network and stream a lot of 4K content. Thanks [link] [comments] |
