*USA* Looking for a nice budget gaming laptop under $900

    Posted: 31 May 2019 12:05 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    • I'm buying in the USA and I'm trying to stay under $900 USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      • I'm only concerned about the noise, I'm gonna be using this laptop in class a lot and I don't want it to be super loud when I'm not gaming and doing things like taking notes and using google. One thing that is a must-have for this laptop is a GTX 1060 6GB.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • I'm not too concerned about weight as long as it's not absurdly heavy, I will be carrying it around campus often.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      • I'm a Windows man.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      • N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      • I will be mostly gaming and programming with this laptop.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • I mostly play CS:GO and Overwatch but I do play more demanding action/adventure sometimes. I would like to keep the settings at high or (if it can handle it) above high. For the FPS I just wanna keep it safely above 60.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      • None of these are dealbreakers but I really would like a laptop with a nice build, maybe like aluminum, not flimsy plastic. And a nice feeling keyboard too, but again they aren't dealbreakers.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      • The most important thing to me is the GTX 1060 6GB or better if possible. But that's everything, thank you to whoever takes the time to help me, I appreciate it!!

~$2,000 laptop with reasonable gaming capabilities that doesn't look like The Terminator's asshole.

    Posted: 30 May 2019 10:16 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

    $2,000. USA.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specifications for the money. 2 in 1 would be nice. Battery life is (mostly) not an issue.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Very.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-15.6".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Just gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Ideally I would love to be able to play Halo Infinity on okay settings. Beyond that, enough power to run PC strategy exclusives like Civilization is a requirement.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I do a lot of Reddit browsing/shitposting so good keyboard and touchpad are a must. A 4K display is very important to me.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Per the title, I really don't want anything that looks stereotypically "gamer". This is a laptop that needs to last me a minimum of three years and won't stick out in professional contexts.

UK - looking for laptop for general use under £200

    Posted: 31 May 2019 02:18 AM PDT

Going travelling soon so only looking for something to handle netflix, spotify, skype etc (maybe hearthstone/photo storage?) and not crash because too many tabs are open.

Since I'm travelling - a good battery life and it being light would be useful.

Also not sure if 32/64GB storage is enough storage (seems a bit low?) but obviously you guys know best haha.

£200 budget, might go slightly over if needed.

German Photojournalist looking for a laptop for Photoshop and Lightroom / budget ~700€

    Posted: 31 May 2019 02:00 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Germany, up to 700€ but I'd be happy with something cheaper

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. As I'm traveling a lot, good battery life should be a priority, but the specs should last me the next few years

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not as important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm mostly using the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom, but I'm starting to do some video stuff)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An SSD is necessary for me I think, other than that the device should be durable. Also the display should be a good quality IPS display.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I won't be able to afford a new laptop for at least 3 to 4 years sadly, so the device should last a while

    --Total budget and country:

    A max of $1,500. USA.

--Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I don't want a 2 in 1 form. I would like a good battery life and pretty decent specs for the money.

--How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as it doesn't look super huge and bulky I can deal with it.

--Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I want to be able to get into skyrim: elder scrolls, so I would like a computer that can run that (50 frames). I would also like for the computer to be able to run the Halo: master chief edition on PC with decent frames and such (40-50 frames). Some other games that I would like to run would be dishonored 2 (40-50 frames), GTA (I'd be ok with 30-40 frames), and Fallout New Vegas (40-50 frames).

--Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I not super picky on keyboards, but I definitely do not want touchscreen

$500-$1000, USA: Need a laptop like Mac but can handle some gaming & multitasking for college

    Posted: 31 May 2019 12:40 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: My total budget is $1000, no exceptions. Purchasing from USA (specifically Hawaii, sometimes shipping isn't available)

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I've never had a 2 in 1, but wouldn't mind, good battery life is crucial to me, would really like for the computer to have a quiet fan and not be prone to overheating.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is very important. I'm not that strong and my textbooks and other things will weigh my bag down. I'd also have thinness as a priority, but not at the expense of not having USB inputs.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I've only ever had Mac, so I don't know how the other OS's work. I'm open to others tho

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No more than 15 inches.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan to do some gaming and maybe light video editing for projects, like Final Cut Pro.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Some games I'd want to play are Borderlands, Subnautica, Overwatch, etc. A little above the lowest settings is fine, 60 FPS tho (if that's possible?)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd prefer a keyboard that's not mechanical, but not "sticky" in the sense that I'd have to put a lot of pressure to hit the keys. I also would like to avoid the trackpads that have a weird, rough texture— basically I want a smooth trackpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. As I mentioned earlier, I've only ever used Macs and I have no knowledge of other laptops. I would prefer getting another Mac but they tend to overheat and crash the lightest games, or even when I have a YouTube video playing with a Skype call. I'm also gonna major in Neuroscience so that means a lot of research papers and whatnot to download, so I'd like ample storage space as well. I would really like a user-friendly, yet efficient laptop that's within my budget range. If it's a touchscreen too then that's a bonus. I'll be replying in the comments if you have any questions!

$1000-$1200 School / Light gaming laptop

    Posted: 30 May 2019 10:15 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      $1000-$1200

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
I would be willing to sacrifice battery life, though it is appreciated.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      I do not mind bulk.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      No preference.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I do not have any specific programs in mind but I can see myself using video and editing software lightly.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The most intensive game would probably be PC Halo

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Lit keyboard, numeric keyboard, and indications for caplock/numlock. Not essential, but appreciated.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Will be used for college and casual on off gaming.

"Money is no object" gaming laptop with > 6 hr battery life (web browsing), 15-16", under 5 lbs

    Posted: 30 May 2019 08:24 PM PDT

Just curious, what is currently the best option for a light weight 15" gaming notebook with excellent battery life for general use (such as web browsing)?

    Required specs:

    • Intel Core i7/i9 8th or 9th gen, 6-cores or 8-cores (until AMD releases Zen2 for laptops)

    • NVIDIA RTX 2060/2070/2080 MaxQ or non-MaxQ (what's important is, best actual real-world performance)

    • 15-16" 144+ Hz IPS display

    • 512+ GB NVMe SSD

    • 6+ hour battery life web browsing

    • Under 5 lbs

"Best" meaning, best performance in gaming (the least thermal throttling) and other workloads when plugged in via AC, as well as best battery life on-the-go for productivity workloads like web browsing, spreadsheets, video consumption, etc.

No budget limit. Must be a real product that actually exists, and a single product (i.e. no suggestions to get an ultrabook and a desktop).

Finding a laptop with a user removable battery....

    Posted: 31 May 2019 03:09 AM PDT

I'm trying to buy a laptop for one of my relatives. Thing is, she's adamant on having a battery she can take out, and she also doesn't like using screwdrivers. So I have to get one of those computers that has a battery pack you can pop out at the back.....

I haven't seen one of those in forever. She just needs a laptop that's pretty decent, not something as good as a Thinkpad P52. This honestly gives me a headache-- please help.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

Canada. At this point, around $1000 CAD give or take is where I'm aiming, but I'm open to ALL suggestions.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Actually, I prefer no 2 in 1. Everything else is negotiable (but it's not like a 2 in 1 would have a removable battery anyway).

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Lighter is better.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows or Linux.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

Around 14''. Smaller is OK, bigger is unnecessary.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    N/A

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

    N/A

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Fingerprint readers are preferable, and it is better if the build quality could withstand a few drops a month.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

She also wants to buy it in a physical store, sooo not online. Don't ask me why, I don't know either. I think she's a bit big on security? Anyway, please help

Need help with high quality general use laptop

    Posted: 30 May 2019 08:56 PM PDT

Hey, so I'm in the market for a new PC. My original one finally left us so I'm out looking for a replacement and I wanted to see what recommendations everyone has. This is just gonna be for general use so no hardcore gaming/content creating/programming etc. I'm just looking for a high quality, movie/video streaming laptop

    • Total budget and country of purchase: - anything is fine as long as it doesnt go passed $1300- *

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -2 in 1 would be cool and everything but not needed. I had a bad habit of keeping my old laptop plugged in and i dont wanna repeat that so I'm looking for decent battery life- *

How important is weight and thinness to you?I want it to be thin/light

    * Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 is what I'm used to, so preferably that size

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. itll be for just movie streaming, maybe some light gaming but nothing crazy

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? since I dont plan on gaming I dont really mind the quality of games *

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? just an overall good build quality would be perfect. If it has any other fancy features such as touch screen, finger print reader, etc would just be an added bonus. As long as the build quality is decent * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. this is just for general use so I'm not too picky. As long it feels nice and runs well. The only other thing I could think of would probably be for it to he on the quiet side? Other then that, like I said, I'm not too picky. Any help/suggestions would be awesome

Disappointed with Lenovo Yoga c930 and now building my hopes up for Lenovo Ideapad s940

    Posted: 31 May 2019 12:00 AM PDT

I have been a mac user for the past 7 years and recently thought enough is enough. Newer Macbook pros have not been exciting me as it used to be and the pricing is ridiculous. I am a programmer and a hobbyist photographer hence the Mac was ideal for both the terminal based coding and the photography Adobe suites.

Recently I decided to buy a windows laptop and dual boot it with linux or use windows linux subsystem for my coding needs. So when I started my tryouts, I was v excited. My criteria was 16GB RAM, 512 SSD and 8th gen core i7. I narrowed by search to the following laptops

    • Windows Surface laptop 2
    • Lenovo Yoga c930
    • Asus Zenbook Pro

I was inclined towards Surface laptop 2 since it had a close resemblance to MBP but Alcantara keyboard scared the shit out of me. The thought of screwing up the keyboard of a 2K laptop with no option of replacing it made me drop it off.

Then I tried Lenovo yoga c930 at BestBuy and fell in love with it. It had all the required specs, beautifully designed(I am looking at you HP Spectre), loved the sound bar, perfect weight for my travel needs, etc. The best part was the keyboard. Though its a bit more noisy than MBP, I loved the feel of typing in it. Once I tried it, I was not able to look beyond it. Bought the laptop.

Once I brought it home and started configuring it, I noticed the fan sound and realized the "Fan never stopped running". Even with just a notepad opened, the fan kept on running. I tested the temperature and realized it spiking till 80+ degree on booting before settling down in the 50s which was still hot enough. I tried all suggestions on the internet - BIOS update, driver updates, etc nothing stopped the fan. I also noticed few other issues with the track pad but they were not show stoppers. After fighting a lot with the laptop, I returned it. I am hugely disappointed. Coming from MBP, this laptop felt like a new dimension but my excitement was cut short.

Now I am planning to buying Lenovo Ideapad s940. Reviews have been good, I love the look of it and it has the required spec. I hope Lenovo doesn't disappoint me again.

Sorry for the rambling. I just wanted to share my frustration and thought few here may share the feelings.

    Asus Gx531 Rtx2070

    Posted: 30 May 2019 11:51 PM PDT

Hello everyone! Few days ago, I got new Laptop Asus Gx531 never owned such beautiful and expensive piece of equipment until now. Although I had many laptops before but never really cared about anything whether its temperature, heat or other issues cause those laptops were under 1500 $ USD. I mean I cared but since Asus Gx531 hit my wallet hard , I would like to preserve it for at least 3 years.

    So ...... I got few questions :

    1) what is the best Optimal temperature when playing games whether its graphically demanding game or not?

    2) Depending on the temperature , how long can you playing games without potentially damaging laptop components due to the heat?

I know what I said sound like a Rookie questions and I have done lots of research before purchasing this laptop I'm just person who always try to reassure that everything will go smoothly.

At this stage I Enjoy my Asus Gx531 and dont have any issues ..... well there is 1 right now , my Armoury Crate not booting , I tried to install everything and fix the issue but its seems like a software issue which can be fixed later on I guess.

HP Spectre x360 VS HP Spectre

    Posted: 30 May 2019 11:02 PM PDT

Hi! I've posted on here looking for laptop recommendations. Another user recommended a laptop, but when I went out to check, I found that it was a fairly rare model, and that sales people were recommending the HP Envy x360 and HP x360 Spectre based on my needs.

To reiterate, the following are very important to me:

    • must be durable (can last around 5 yrs)
    • must be a 2-in-1
    • lightweight (as in I don't mind larger devices, as long as they're light and don't exceed 15")
    • packs a bit of power. I don't care for gaming but my more demanding tasks are heavy excel work and MatLab.

Right now, I'm torn. I'm mostly turned off by the price difference, but at the same time I'm drawn to the premium build and feel of the Spectre.

Do you think either device fits my needs as described above? As always, any comment will be highly appreciated! Thanks!

Need a laptop to ship to Lithuania for my cousin, max 400$/317£

    Posted: 30 May 2019 10:58 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Buying in the US, 400$/317£ max

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. what ever is the best

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. light flash gaming at best

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? just enough to play flash games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm in the Us wanting to buy my cousin her first ever laptop, she lives in a village in Lithuania and there is nothing to do in the summer, I wanted to get her a laptop to have something to do. I wanna ship from amazon.uk because the import fees are crazy in the U.S. I tried and my order got canceled with my card getting declined. So any decent laptop a 14 year girl could use. If you have a better site than amazon I'm all ears.

[Advice] Just a need an opinion of some people who probably know more than me.

    Posted: 30 May 2019 10:17 PM PDT

I'm new to this sub so forgive me if this isn't the place to ask this. I'm just wondering opinions on getting a laptop with a graphics card vs a less powerful laptop but also using an external GPU? Basically my decision is between the latest Razer Blade Stealth paired with an RTX 2070 eGPU or a Raze Blade 15 with a 2070 Max Q. Cost isn't the biggest issue for me right now I just want to know what would perform better or be more worth it. Any thoughts or input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

TLDR: Razer Blade Stealth w/2070 eGPU or Blade 15 w/2070 Max Q

$1,000 Laptop with 2 SSDs, Singapore

    Posted: 30 May 2019 06:28 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Singapore, SGD1000.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Regular 12"-14" laptop without touch screen is fine.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important. Using it for work only and would appreciate a thin and light laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12" to 14".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No. Mainly using it for email, spreadsheets, powerpoint.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Already have a desktop PC, so nil need for a gaming laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A little bit of a unique requirement, but looking for a laptop with 2 SSDs out of the box so that I can do dual-booting. No other special requirements.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Appreciate any advice on the above!

    ~$600 programming/casual gaming/cad laptop, >13in screen, USA

    Posted: 30 May 2019 10:12 PM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade from my Acer Aspire E 15 laptop that I've been using for 3 years. Within the last year the battery on the laptop has completely failed and it only works when the charger is plugged in. Recently, I've also had issues with my screen flickering so I'm looking for a more reliable and longer lasting laptop.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'd like to keep my budget within $400-$800, but willing to push to $1000 max. Country of purchase is USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life would be good, maybe >6 hours? Most importantly, I want something that I won't have to upgrade until 5 years or so later.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The lower the weight, the better. Preferably less than 4 pounds.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows preferably

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13 and 15.6 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan on doing some CAD and casual gaming. CAD-wise, I want something that can at least handle Autodesk Fusion and Blender. I mainly play games that aren't resource intensive, like Terraria or Hearthstone, but I occasionally play stuff like Guild Wars 2.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm okay with playing at the lowest settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No requirements on input devices

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. SSD is a must. 256 GB is preferable, but 128 GB is fine too though
