Posted: 03 May 2019 12:45 PM PDT For Example, my storage drive E: was a 2tb hdd and I partitioned it into 1.8TB and .2TB in order to install linux mint on the .2TB partition. Now when I boot into windows to game/watch movies/etc. the E: drive no longer shows. Did I scuff the install up and format the entire E: drive to be a linux partition and lost all of my data on it or did I just not do something correctly after the partition? [link] [comments] |
[LINUX MINT] Problems with Linux Mint Live Posted: 03 May 2019 03:45 AM PDT Current system : Windows 10 64bit Hardware : Athlon X4 740 Quad Core R7 240 2GB PowerColor 4GB RAM DDR3 1600mhz Fm2-A55-E33 (Its not UEFI) Hi all, i heard that is a sub where i can post some of my errors so here i go.. Questions on automount via fstab in regards to Linux file system Posted: 03 May 2019 12:52 PM PDT Howdy folks! Just got my first Linux (mint) install going last night. It will be for a PleX server, as well as to dabble around in. I put the OS on a small SSD, then installed a 2TB HDD. Through some reading, I used GParted to create one large MSDOS partition on the HDD named "media" where I plan to store movies and TV shows for PleX and then changed the permissions. After that, I went to edit the 'fstab' file to have the HDD automount, and that's where I started to get confused on some concepts... *I want to mention that when I created the partition named "media" on the HDD, I was unaware of the /media folder. I read people generally suggested that I create the mountpoint under /media, however, I also noticed that doing so creates a link on the desktop and in the file manager. Being a desktop minimalist, I'd prefer another option. So, I'm looking at two other options: create a new directory, such as /plexstuff, or point it towards /home/me/videos. Is one of these a better practice than the other? If I make the HDD mountpoint for /home/me/videos, does that redirect everything to be saved on the HDD, or does the SSD still retain some of that location space? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

"Disable touchpad while typing" not working Posted: 03 May 2019 07:06 AM PDT Hello, I am having a problem with my trackpad. Whenever, I type, it does not disable and so the cursor will fly around the screen constantly as my palm touches it. I am running Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon on a T440p with a T450 Synaptics trackpad. I had problems with the cursor freezing, so I changed the libinput drivers to synaptics drivers which fixed that. However, now I have this issue. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks. Posted: 03 May 2019 10:25 AM PDT So some of you may have heard a fully featured fork of Ubuntu was recently released for hacked switch consoles and it runs very smoothly. The problem I'm having with it is I have big fat sausage fingers and the touch doesn't like to cooperate with them. I'm trying to find a package that would let me use the switch joycons as a way to move the mouse and left/right click. Can anyone shed some light on how I would go about doing this? UFW shows many, many blocked connections from local network Posted: 03 May 2019 07:39 AM PDT I have a SMB/DLNA server set up at home, with a VPN to access the content remotely. I use UFW, and set up a few rules to allow/deny the correct connections and ports. Recently however, I discovered that the ufw.log is logging a LOT of requests (multiple per minute, every minute) from addresses in my local network, and these requests are being blocked by UFW. My problem is that I don't understand what these connections are, or what they want to accomplish. The SMB/DLNA service works regardless of this. Here is an example:
Destination addresses will vary, from 224.0.0.1 to .251 to 239.255.255.250, or the local myservername address. Questions:
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

I've never used Linux as my primary OS, 'been Windows user since forever. My question is, is it possible to install .exe files (for example some video games) on Ubuntu? I know that I can run them via Wine, but what about installation? [link] [comments] |

Checking last boot time on linux mint 19.1 cinnamon Posted: 03 May 2019 11:20 AM PDT Hey everyone, is there an easy way to check the last reboot times, to see if anybody booted your laptop without you wanting them to? I only found Are there any other ways, and what exactly does the above mentioned command do? Does it just read already existing recorded files, or does it create a pseudo user that then records your boots? Thanks in advance for an answer. [link] [comments] |

Question on software installation Posted: 03 May 2019 11:02 AM PDT As a new user I'm just wondering where software is installed and how I can change that to a folder on a different drive I've mounted. I'm using yay atm to install packages and being able to move where yay and other programs install software would be a great help. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

An application wants access to the keyring "Default Keyring" Posted: 03 May 2019 04:22 AM PDT Hi! For a while now I have been getting this prompt when I start up Atom text editor. Removing Windows 10 from Dual Boot Posted: 03 May 2019 07:37 AM PDT Hello everybody! I have an ASUS laptop and I am using dual boot to have both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on the same system. I have been using Ubuntu for some time now and I would like to remove the Windows 10 OS because I don't use it so much and it is just taking up space. How should I do that? Thanks in advance! Installing to a headless server Posted: 03 May 2019 07:02 AM PDT So my server's hard drive died and now it won't boot because the way I setup fstab. Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to install linux to a server with no keyboard or monitor attached to it? I no longer have either laying around. And the tutorials I've found assumed that I could access the computer with both for initial boot. [link] [comments] |
Segmentation fault with simple commands, kernel problem and files corrupted after reboot. Posted: 03 May 2019 01:00 AM PDT Hi guys, I have a weird problem with my new computer. I have built a pc using new pieces, and a friend's GPU. After installing successfully ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS on a 480GB SSD (with a UEFI partition), it worked fine for a few weeks. But two days ago, I had to shut down my computer after a freeze, and I pressed the physical button for 5 seconds (I know I shouldn't have done that, should have used SysRq + s e i u b instead), but now, I can't boot anymore. I can access GRUB, but both kernels 4.18.0-18-generic and 4.18.0-17-generic give this output (cf. image ): https://i.redd.it/yrjw4504cyv21.jpg
But I was able to use my system from a live session by following this method but when I am using simple linux commands like "apt", "apt-get", "wget", "vim", and others, I immediately get this error : I removed the last things I installed by using dpkg, but I have noticed a strange thing : the /var*/*lib/dpkg/status file is corrupt ! There are dozens of lines containing unreadable characters. Maybe some other system files are corrupt and as a result some commands are unusable. This may have appeared after the forced shutdown... One more thing : the diks utility from the live-session says "Disk is OK, 370 bad sectors", but as I've said, my SSD is brand new. dmesg gives this output when I'm typing apt or vim :
I think the only way to make it work is to reinstall Ubuntu, but I would like to know if there is another way to recover it, and why has this issue appeared after a forced shutdown. This is the second time I'm getting problems after a forced shutdown, the first time was just after the first installation, and I had to install ubuntu one more time. What I've done so far :
Here's my hardware (I bought every piece few weeks ago, except the GPU) : CPU : Intel core i5 8400 Motherboard : MSI Z390-A PRO PSU : be quiet! System Power 9 400W SSD : Kingston UV500 (480g, M.2 Connector 2280) GPU : Gigabyte RX 460 4gb OC Monitor : LG 24mp58vq RAM : 2x8g Corsair Vengence 3000mHz (running at 2933) (I had to change it two weeks ago because my pc wouldn't turn on) System : Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS Thank you [link] [comments] |
I get these errors on dell 5567 should I be worried? I have read their false? Posted: 02 May 2019 10:42 PM PDT |
Posted: 03 May 2019 06:05 AM PDT Hey all, For some reason this morning when attempting to startx, it refuses to start. But before I can even attempt to resolve that I'm facing an even stranger issue. Every few seconds, a ctrl + space keypress is happening. I have no idea how or why. When in command mode in Vim, via pressing ':' I will get this character repeated every few seconds ^ @ which I have discovered is the keypress ctrl+space. I don't know why this is happening but it is making troubleshooting near impossible. I can't edit anything in Vim because that is the shortcut for autocomplete. It also takes a few attempts to login because it keeps adding these ctrl+spaces. Any help would be immensely appreciated [link] [comments] |
Best path to get Solus' "version" of Budgie on an Ubuntu system? Posted: 03 May 2019 04:32 AM PDT I've been trying out Solus on a secondary machine recently and have enjoyed the Budgie desktop, but I am most comfortable with Ubuntu after having used it for the last few years. I tried out Ubuntu Budgie but the user experience isn't quite the same with the tweaks they have made to the Budgie desktop. What is the best way to get the "vanilla" Budgie experience on an Ubuntu system?

Posted: 02 May 2019 08:52 PM PDT So I'm currently using easytether for internet access, which bypasses my carriers ability to monitor my sharing of my phone's mobile data with other devices. Easytether allows me to connect my phone to my computer and use my unlimited data plan and to ATT&T it looks like all of the traffic is originating from my phone, so no red flags. I have to slight issues, I'd like to correct. The first is, Each time I plug my phone into my computer I must run these two commands: $ sudo easytether-usb $ sudo dhcpcd tap-easytether Those commands will get everything going and get my computer leased out and IP and what not and then I'll be able to use the internet. My second issue, is that seemingly at random, my computer drops the easytether connection and to reestablish it I'll either have to only enter in the two above commands in sequence again, or for some reason I'll also have to unplug and then plug back in my phone and then reenter the commands again. This all gets irritating when I'm trying to download something or perform some sort of a scan or watch a movie or anything really. Is there anyway that I can tell my computer to run those two commands in the background anytime lsusb returns Samsung etc. etc. as a newly acquired device. If I use the same usb port, my device is always assigned to same ID and given the same name by lsusb, so I imagine, maybe I can utilize that as what I tell my computer to look for? Also, I have a notification turned on that tells me when I lose my network connection. Is it also possible to tell my computer to run those two commands anytime the tap-easytether interface goes down, and the device Samsung etc etc is still present at Usb port such n such? Thanks guys, I tried googling this, but I wasn't sure if I should be trying to do this using the alias command or the set command or what, I also wasn't sure how to make the running of the commands conditional on something occuring outside of the command line or whatever. Oh, I also am running Budgie on Manjaro currently. [link] [comments] |
Linux Noob can’t boot windows or use touchpad or touchscreen or WiFi! Posted: 02 May 2019 09:48 PM PDT Hi! I installed Ubuntu 18.04 today following a guide posted here and everything was nice for a few hours until just now when I closed my laptop and reopened it, and nothing worked! The keyboard works but that's all - the touchscreen doesn't work, touchpad doesn't work, and WiFi doesn't work. I've done what I think to be a lot, like go to advanced options or try to go back to windows but it can't go back to windows. Also I have to type in a recovery key every time I click on the manager which is a very long process. I tried resetting windows, recovery mode on Ubuntu. In terms of specs(?) I'm on a Lenovo Yoga 720, CPU:Intel i7-7500U I'm not really sure what other information to provide but all help is super welcome! I tried looking up stuff but it's kind of hard to on my phone and idk if my problem is what others are having. I will provide any information necessary! Thanks!!! [link] [comments] |
