[Manjaro][i3] Hibernation/Suspend Wake issue Posted: 16 May 2019 08:59 AM PDT Hey fellas, So I've put Manjaro i3 on my Acer Aspire 3 A315-21. I'm loving it and getting the hang of tweaking things and getting them working. But the one issue I've not been able to debug is that of suspend. I have created a swap partition that's 10 gigabytes. I used the hibernator script to make sure that my mkinitscpio is changed correctly, and my grub boot files. It suspends fine and seems to wake from suspend fine, however as the screen comes on and displays everything it freezes. I can't use the keyboard or the mouse. I can't figure out how to debug this either, because of it freezing at that point and me having to hold the power button to force shut down. When running `journalctl -b -f` I can see that it seems to suspend without error, but can't figure out how to log or debug it. Sorry if I'm just stupid, but thanks for any help in advance. Posted: 16 May 2019 09:51 AM PDT Hello everyone ! This is my frst post here because I'm at a point where I can't find any answers by myself... I'v installed Manjaro KDE on my Dell laptop 1 month ago. Everything is fine, it all works fluently. The only "problem" is that my internal graphics card (Nvidia GP108M [GeForce MX150]) is not recognized by manjaro in any way... I've installed the "mesa" package, lib32-nvidia-utils, linux419-nvidia, mhwd-nvidia, mhwd-nvidia-340xx, mhwd-nvidia-390xx, nvidia-utils and opencl-nvidia When I launch the "screenfetch" command, it says that the GPU is "unknown"... Do you have any recommandation or tips for this problem? Thanks :) [link] [comments] |

Two Linux distros on one machine Posted: 16 May 2019 12:51 PM PDT I have a laptop with a Slackware Linux already installed. I am looking to install another Linux distro on a new SSD drive. What is the best way or method to do this? How should I partition the SSD drive? In images, you can see the partitions in this machine. Current situation in this machine [link] [comments] |

Hey does anyone know good retro icon themes? Posted: 16 May 2019 12:13 PM PDT Themes that look like from an older operating system, or something made that looks like that. I know about the existence of Chicago95 and Gnustep, but I'd love to see something like the icons in CDE. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
What's the best way to test if a LUKS encrypted partition is secure or not? Posted: 15 May 2019 09:15 PM PDT I installed Linux on my main PC but different parts were split across different LUKS encrypted partitions all with the same password (as per this comment), and now I would like to check if they are actually securely encrypting my data. Question about upgrading Win7 to Win10 on a dual-boot system. Posted: 16 May 2019 10:04 AM PDT It looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade the Windows partition on my desktop from Win 7 to Win 10. In the past when I have had to reinstall Windows or do a fresh install on a dual boot machine, Windows was not very cooperative. (It would object to being installed on a disk that had any evidence of a previous OS on it or it would only install by reformatting the ENTIRE disk.) Is Windows 10 more friendly when it comes to being installed on a dual boot system? Will I be able to tell it to only install itself in the Windows partition? (My current system is a Dell XPS-8500 with a dual boot between Win 7 Pro and Ubuntu Studio 16.04 running the Unity desktop. I spend most of my time in Ubuntu but Windows runs some software I can't accommodate with Linux.) [link] [comments] |

Proper use of /usr/local/bin ? Posted: 16 May 2019 04:55 AM PDT Installing a new operating system on my Laptop, (Ubuntu with i3wm) I find myself with a problem I haven't really had before, despite having used Linux for a few years now. I'm compiling a bunch of different stuff from source, fonts, things apparently needed to compile fonts, and other things. I'm finally getting the hang of compiling things I think. It used to be a dead end for me, following tutorials that only ever gave me error messages. I now realize I must look for a list of dependencies somewhere in the install description before any attempts at make/cmake or whatever... Which in some cases means a 'sudo apt-get install' with a long ass list of stuff ending in -dev. That's great, but not always the case. Sometimes it's just a list of cryptic names and good luck googling. Ok, sorry for dumping my frustration, it does actually work, sometimes, and If the blog post I'm reading is from 2014, I guess I should have known better. Anyway, my issue now is what to do with the compiled files, and all the other files. Let me explain, this is the method I use:
So now, It's built, but not installed. There is a binary file there, and a bunch of other files. So what do I do? I guess putting the binary somewhere in path is what I'm after, which gives me a few options. Regardless, it CAN'T stay in /Downloads, I delete all the contents of that folder as soon as it gets too big, it is by definition meant to be a Temporary folder. So, I want to use /usr/local/bin, I'm guessing this is the right thing to do. I can copy the binary there, but what about the rest of the files? Are they needed? Are they never needed? Are they needed sometimes? How should I know the difference? And if they are needed, where in /usr/local do they go? /lib ? If so, do I still separate the binary out to put it in /bin by itself, or symlink it so it can retain its relationship with the other files? Anyway, sorry this got long, and sorry as I'm sure this is a stupid question, at least if you are very used to building stuff already. [link] [comments] |
LUKS and SSD hardware encryption Posted: 16 May 2019 02:11 AM PDT I heard that Bitlocker on Windows is not safe as it uses by default the (vulnerable) hardware encryption of SSD manufacturers. Is LUKS safer or does it also have this flaw? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
[HELP] Need help setting up Linux Mint on MSI GS 65 Posted: 16 May 2019 01:21 AM PDT Hello everybody, I am currently trying to setup Linux Mint as 2nd OS on my MSI GS65 laptop. I have been warned that I'll encounter problems with the dedicated GPU. Right now I set up Mint on a 2nd partition and have a version of GRUB running. But whenever I boot into Mint I only get the login screen, after that, I only get a black screen with my mouse. That is issue 1. For Issue 2: When I log in and move the mouse it stops moving after a couple of seconds, like the whole system freezes. I was not very motivated to fix these issues until now, but I have some assignments upcoming that would favor the usage of Linux and I won't be home to use the VM on my desktop. [link] [comments] |
Imaging my current (Gentoo) setup for future reinstall (ie: on different hardware) Posted: 15 May 2019 10:28 PM PDT Hi, /r/linux4noobs! tldr: what are my options for backing up various configurations within Gentoo (ie: installed packages, arbitrary settings for arbitrary applications, etc), independent of the kernel and the hardware I'm running? I've recently begun my transition from Windows 10 to Gentoo. Ideally, I'd like to permanently switch, but I still have a lot of setup to get through. My main question is, once I have every how I like it, from the packages and add-ons I have installed, for example, all the way down to trivial configurations like my location information for the weather extension I added to GNOME, how exactly would I go about backing this up? My boot partition and a key are stored on a USB and the rest of the system is encrypted on a drive separate from Windows. I point this out because I'm thinking that perhaps, and correct me if I'm wrong, it would normally be as simple as formatting a drive to have similar partitions to an everyday setup, and then just copying the files over. So backups would be simple because I could just use my Synology server to make stable images by just straight-up copying the files over as root once in a while (and worry about my personal files separate since they're on my cloud anyways). But in my case and more in-line with my primary question, let's say I pick up a new motherboard, a different brand processor, and a different brand video card, and I decide to stop using a USB and instead leave the drive unencrypted. I'm confident that I can use the Gentoo wiki to build a new kernel and get systemd and GNOME up and running again, for example, but how can I get everything quickly and efficiently looking and acting how my current setup does? If the answer is, "it isn't that simple — you're still too new to do an effective backup," that's totally fine. I realized today when I had a few applications crash that I still don't know exactly where various logs are stored from memory, and my find/grep/etc skills are pretty lacking. (Unrelated but I seem to have somehow broken GNOME's built-in weather function through normal use) I suppose the kind of answer that I'm looking for is, "here is how to make a list of all of the packages you have installed, here is where various important config files are stored, and if you tweak an arbitrary application's settings and want to have a backup, here's a general place to look for those various types of settings." But, of course, any relevant resources are welcome if you'd like to send them my way. I'm happy to be making the switch and, though it's quite daunting, I feel as if I'm learning a lot. PS: I need to set a day aside to learn the ins-and-outs of Gentoo's portage/emerge. Perhaps I could find a way to script a lot of this, but I'm only barely grasping permissions in Linux (for example) and I'm trying not to overwhelm myself. But, I chose Gentoo for the learning Linux meme so here I am. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

can't update the system + few issues Posted: 15 May 2019 05:41 PM PDT i use xubuntu. with the lsb_release -a on the terminal, i get the following ubuntu version: Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS it's been a few months since, from time to time the OS asks me if i want to download updates. whenever i click yes, it starts downloading, only to tell me later that the updates couldn't be installed (check your internet connection - which is always fine). furthermore, i get, from time to time, a message saying the chrome is getting terminated due to bugs (but it doesn't, really) furthermore, in the past months, from time to time, my system freezes (the mouse pointer begins getting very laggy, until the pc freezes and i have to hard reset) [link] [comments] |
