Laptop locking up with weird display effects.

    Posted: 14 May 2019 10:46 PM PDT

I have a Lenovo Yoga 920 and very recently it has been crashing with parts of the screen being affected. Often the screen is mostly unaffected with a 2-3 pixel yellow and red line at the top of the screen and a slight blur everywhere. This usually happens while I'm moving it but has happened while it is sitting on a desk, or while I am unplugging an external graphics card. When the crash happens the computer is not hot anywhere.

This is a problem I had with a desktop 10 years ago if that means anything.

What is this pink bubble that randomly appeared on my phone?

    Posted: 14 May 2019 05:57 AM PDT

    http://imgur.com/a/dlRGwDp

I have a Samsung J7 Prime. I wasnt on any apps when it appeared. It looks like it was recording my audio. Everytime the room got louder, the lines in the bubble would go up. It would not let me open up any apps and I tried to drag it to the X in the middle and I tried to click the X but none of those worked. When I clicked it, SOMETIMES, not always, my vibration notification list would appear for me to choose a vibration. I would but nothing would happen.

It disappeared when I restarted my phone but I'm still afraid that I'm being recorded or something

Edit: Turned out to be Facebook messenger. Thanks for the help and to know I'm not being spied on lol

Edit number 2: i did not mean to start an argument

My Sony TV has a pink line problem

    Posted: 14 May 2019 11:41 PM PDT

After an accident that cracked its screen, I sent the TV to repair multiple times, but have resulted in the same problem. There are pink stripes in the lower 1/3 of the screen. The thing is, this doesn't show up when watching normal TV channels, only when watching videos on Youtube TV. As far as I could tell it's not a hardware problem, because it doesn't affect normal channels. Maybe it's a software problem with Youtube?

Here is an image. Another one.

If anyone can give me some help I'd be so very grateful.

Random CPU thermal throttling on idle

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:25 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,
I recently had a gaming rig built for me, and it has the CoolerMaster ML240L RGB Master and an i7-9700k CPU. I've overclocked to a conservative 5 GHz and it's been running beautifully with max temps reaching no more than around 70 Degrees Celsius. However, earlier today after leaving the computer idling with only Discord and Steam running, the noise picked up on the computer. I opened up the Intel tuning application to see that my CPU was now 100 C and thermal throttling was active. I restarted the computer, ran a few stress tests and everything is back to normal.

What I'm wondering is what could have caused this, and if there is anything I can do in the future to prevent this from happening. At this point I can only guess that it was either a sensor fault or a cooling glitch. Normally if I try I can hear fluid being pumped around the system during high workloads, but this time all I could hear was the fans spinning.

    Full Specs;
    Giga Z390 Pro Wifi

    Intel i7 - 9700k

    CM ML40L

    8GB x 2 D4-3200 T2r GSK

    Samsung 970 Evo m.2 1TB SSD

    ASUS RTX 2080 A86

    Video glitches. Mac Air.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:21 AM PDT

I purchased the Macbook Air about 2/3 months ago. I've been dealing with white glitches during videos when I watch them full screen. About 20 minutes in, sometimes a bit longer. I've done safe mode, reinstalled the Mac OS and the problem still occurs.

I've even used different browsers and the problem occurs mostly when watching Netflix. Nothing yet on Hulu but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. If anyone has any solutions, that would be greatly appreciated.

Laptop makes random chiming noise. Can someone identify this?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:15 AM PDT

Here is a video where you can hear the noise: https://youtu.be/dOE42mSl-z0

This random chiming noise has been happening since I bought the laptop a few weeks ago. It's pretty faint and only noticeable if the room is silent, but still annoying.

It sometimes happens pretty randomly, other times it seems to happen right before some notification shows up on the laptop.

It comes from the hardware, not from Windows as I have compared it to every notification sound and noticed it with the volume muted as well.

I'm not sure I want to send the laptop back to warranty just because of the amount of work it takes to set up a new one.

    Thanks everyone!

GPU Issue: 960M 2GB playing games better than 1060 6GB

    Posted: 14 May 2019 04:35 PM PDT

So I recently noticed that my 1060 6GB was playing GTA 5 at a lower fps than my older, much weaker 960M 2GB. The game is running Medium settings on both cards. The FPS is down on the 1060 by at least 20 frames. Both cards are overclocked just a little via Afterburner. Any Ideas?

Also, the 1060 is actually running a little cooler than the 960M, so thermals cant be the issue?

Laptop clock speed locked at 797MHz after repair

    Posted: 15 May 2019 05:02 AM PDT

After bringing in my laptop to the repair shop to fix the issue where my laptop wasn't charging consistently, it turns out the laptop wasn't sealed correctly as I recently cleaned the laptop's cooler and put new thermal paste.

The shop didn't even charge anything but after getting back my laptop, it's been running awfully slow and I have a fresh Windows 10 install on an SSD. After reading up on some guides, I noticed that the CPU speed is stuck on 797MHz and not changing at any time, even when starting any game (although I have only one currently installed).

I tried to mess with Windows power settings and switch the laptop to a High-Performance plan and setting the minimum and maximum frequencies to 100% which didn't solve it. The BIOS isn't very helpful as it some very basic settings due to OEM restrictions, I'm assuming.

My laptop specs are as follows:

     Windows 10 Home 64-bit Intel Core i7 6700HQ @ 2.60GHz 32 °C Skylake 14nm Technology RAM 12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28) Motherboard HP 8155 (U3E1) Graphics Generic PnP Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz) Intel HD Graphics 530 (HP) 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M (HP) 35 °C ForceWare version: 398.36 SLI Disabled Storage 447GB KINGSTON SA400S37480G (SATA-2 (SSD)) 30 °C Optical Drives No optical disk drives detected Audio Realtek High Definition Audio

    https://gyazo.com/0eb7a7872fbf94eb6000720745e77056

I noticed it when I was gaming. I'm trying to make a circle but it keeps making sharp angels randomly. No mater what speed I do it but a smaller jump ofc. I tired restarting. re-plugin the mouse and reinstalling Nvidea and mouse drivers. Changed mousepads. But didn't try another mouse (don't have one)

do you have ideas why my mouse does this how to fix it. Could it be a software problem or should I buy a new mouse.

[Extreme Challenge] How do I use my AT&T SIM card in any form of a router?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:50 AM PDT

Sorry for the bait I will do anything for an internet connection. Basically, I want my unlimited AT&T plan sim card to work as a hotspot. My plan blocks those tethering ports on my main driver phone and I don't know if they block the ports on a 4G LTE Modem. Using deductive reasoning I believe if they blocked hotspot on my phone I don't imagine I can use a prebuilt system. I think I have to root an Android phone to unlock tethering. I can't root my main driver phone because of its CPU. I just bought an LGE LG K8 2018 CV1 LML212VL and it can't be rooted because of the same reason. I bought the phone yesterday at Walmart should I return it can get a different model number or am I lost in how to achieve my goal? Thanks for all the help!

My lenovo yoga 530 keeps crashing for a few seconds, also 9gag image loading problems when using brave browser

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:42 AM PDT

9gag example Hello, So I recently bought a lenovo yoga 530 14IKB to take with me to uni. Ive noticed images not showing on 9gag (havent had it for long enough to see it happen anywhere else). It doesnt happen in other browsers, but I love the Brave browser. Ive tried disabling all script blockers, even tried it in icognito mode, still some images dont load. Its weird that not all images have a problem. Whats up with that? Also, the screen goes off for a few seconds, the mouse appears again and a few seconds after everything else. Sound is still on. I suspected it was the explorer that had errors, but no matter what program is running, it goes away too. Its weird. Do you have any idea what could be wrong ? Every time this happens, its not hot, or running 1000 programs simultaneously, and it probably couldnt, its only an i3 8th gen, and it shows. But i got it for cheap and its enough for uni work. Thanl you in advance for taking the time to tackle this.

Can’t connect to DHCP server on Xbox One

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:08 AM PDT

I've searched for the solution to this issue for some time and each solution seems infrequent at best. I've power cycled my router and Xbox, given my Xbox its own DHCP lease manually and setup a manual IP and it refuses to connect. I am able to use my phones hotspot but that is a very temporary fix (and also isolates the issue to my router and Xbox's communication)

One thing I have noticed is that on my routers wifi1 station page (the wifi everything is connected to, we have a second that's 5Ghz but isn't used) my Xbox is listed (while it can't connect to the internet) but on the routers wireless DHCP lease list it doesn't show my Xbox (even after I've manually entered it in, but it shows this entry on another page). I can try resetting my Xbox without deleting storage but I don't particularly want to (I have home accounts and friends accounts setup that I would rather not have to re enter) and the router is my fathers and he doesn't want me resetting it or anything. Any tips or solutions anyone else have would be appreciated.

Edit: when I said solutions were infrequent at best, I meant for others. None of these solutions have worked at all.

    hard drive performance?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:07 AM PDT

ok so i have an old laptop thats extremely slow (asus a53b)

    this slowness started pretty suddenly.

i suspect its a hard drive issue, but i dont know for sure. the slowness persists even after formatting the drive and reinstalling windows.

take a look at the crystaldiskmark/info results:

    https://i.imgur.com/3Gabxu1.png

    https://i.imgur.com/wNUvRpM.png

is there anything thats points towards a hard drive issue? the second and third line in the first screenshot seem extremely low to me.

i just dont want to buy a new hard drive and put it in just to see that the problem is still there and that its not a hard drive issue after all.

Two types of SATA ports on laptop?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:05 AM PDT

Extending from my previous post (not necessary to go there).

I was going through my Laptops SATA ports, and I am using the HWiNFO tool. After looking for a bit, I found that my HDD is connected to a SATA-3 port (which is good), whereas my optical drive is connected to a SATA-1 port (not good).

    Is this even possible?

On the ports tab, this was given. I am not sure what does it mean by 1.5 Gb/s there. Is it the max speed of the Optical Drive and the port is SATA-3, or the port is SATA-1 (because the manufacturer decided to cheap onto this laptop)?

I want to replace either the HDD or the optical drive with an SSD, and attach the HDD on the other port. I would not like it to run on low speeds.

EDIT: Big emphasis on this statement: Is it the max speed of the Optical Drive and the port is SATA-3?

Is There A Safe Way To Make All Online Payments?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 03:57 AM PDT

I want to buy a premium membership for $5 on a download site, because it's the only place to get what I'm looking for. However, the site looks pretty dodgy and my phish senses are tingling.

I really don't care if I pay the $5 and nothing happens... but I AM scared that they take my PayPal password or credit card info.

So I'm wondering, is there any payment method that is immune to phishing?

The site takes most kinds of payments, including Bitcoin.

And what is the safest way to make a payment on a website?

    Thanks

PC crashes in games or 3d benchs after installing a new graphics card (nvidia to amd)

    Posted: 14 May 2019 11:54 PM PDT

Hello, i've got this trouble with my new graphics card that i bought, i explain, i have an gtx 960, then i bought an r9 390

so the problem here is that i uninstalled gtx 960 driver with DDU tool, them remove the gtx 960 and install that r9 390
i've installed the r9 390 driver, next i went to a graphics benchmark, specificaly the superposition benchmark, and it has passed it but when the bench finishes it goes to desktop, then the pc stops working with BSOD: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED so it shuts down but, when it restart, it doesn't recognize the HDD with windows, it just open BIOS, shutted down the power supply and restart the pc, it starts normally, but when i do the bench, it works fine, so i decided to try a game, Forza Horizon 4 and it's bench tool, when i run the test it says "optimizing for your pc" loads a time, and in 3% it crashes the pc again with the same BSOD, and again, it doesn't recognize with HDD windows, but, i can watch videos, navigate on internet, or just play music, it only happens in games or in 3d benchs. i was monitoring temps and cpu is at 56° max and gpu at 65° max so i guess is not a temps problem, other solutions i've tries was doing a memtest for 8 hours and it passes, i run sfc/scannow and there is no problem, /chkdsk and no problem with hdd, i tried an older version of driver and still same issue, even i reinstalled windows but still remains the problem.

i had to say that i get the same problem when i test with a rx 580 4gb, so i don't know what can cause the issue.
can anyone help me with this issue?
    My Specs:

    CPU: RYZEN 5 1600 @3.2GHZ

    MOBO: ASROCK AB350M PRO4
    RAM: G. SKILL 2X8 GB 2400 MHZ
    PSU: EVGA 600BR 600W 80 PLUS BRONZE
    GPU: RADEON R9 390
    OLD GPU: GTX 960 4GB
if anyone can help me, i'll be so thankful.

    sorry for bad english.

    Broken Motherboard?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 03:36 AM PDT

I've been building my own PCs all my life and never really had a problem, but I'm really at a loss on this one. So much so that I'm actually making a reddit post about it. This is gonna be a long one so sit tight (TLDR at the bottom).

So a couple of weeks back I decided to upgrade my rig with a new Motherboard and CPU. The parts in question are the Z390 Gaming X and a i9-9900k.

As per usual when I order stuff, it mostly arrives broken and I guess this time wasn't an exception. I installed the new parts, booted it up and then proceeded to install the necessary drivers for the motherboard via provided CD.

Here's where the problem starts: It wouldn't actually install anything. It would stop at a random percentage and then just... stop. I wouldn't let me cancel the installation either, even trying to terminate it with task manager didn't work so I was forced to do a manual reboot. "Maybe it's just the CD" I thought to myself. So I went ahead and downloaded the drivers directly from the manufacturers page - in this case Gigabyte - put them on a flash drive (the PC with the new parts had no internet due to missing drivers) and plugged it into the thing.

This is where problem number 2 arrived: The motherboard doesn't recognize any form of flash drive. I tried multiple ones and I tried them on different devices to make sure they work. And they do. Just not on my new PC.

Alrighty, so I went ahead, downloaded the files on my SSD, put that SSD in the new rig, booted it up and it turns out that was all for nothing because the same problem occurred.

Then I tried reinstalling windows, reformatting my SSD, updating/reinstalling the BIOS, etc. but ultimately to no avail. If anything it made it worse because after trying for hours and days the only thing I managed to do is get a bluescreen on top of the existing problems whenever I would try to restart or shut down my PC (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE), which according to google is often caused by incompatible drivers. That I can't fix because I can't install anything.

Since something was clearly wrong, I opened a ticket with the manufacturer and what followed was the most horrific, painful, frustrating experience I've ever had with tech support over a span of almost 2 weeks. But we won't get into that.

Jimmy, if you're reading this: I sincerely hate you.

In the end, all they were able to do is ask me useless questions over and over, which resolved absolutely nothing, and confirmed that something must be wrong with the Motherboard and that I should contact the retailer. And so I did. I called the retailer, explained the situation and they agreed to send me a replacement. The replacement arrived aaaaand same thing. So I contacted the retailer once again, they put me on the phone with one of their "specialists" which told me to get teamviewer so he can check it out. After looking through everything he confirmed that there should be no issues and that he can't explain why it doesn't work. He assured me over the phone that I should send both of the motherboards back (since I haven't had a chance to return the first one at this point in time) and that they'll give me a full refund.

Turns out they didn't, because when they got them they tested it and apparently everything was fine. So they sent me one back and here we are. Since I was down on money because of this I figured I'd see what I can do to make it work and by chance I found out that part of the reason why it stops midway through installations (at least for the drivers) I'm pretty sure is due to it not restarting like you usually have to every so often when doing this. I stumbled across this by trying to install the drivers again and then having restart (using the button since restarting normally leads to bluescreen) and then opening the installation software again, which continued on from where it left off.

Now the problem with this is that it didn't quite work for everything, e.g. after installing a steam game and running it for the first time it will do a "first time setup" that involves installing some Microsoft drivers, which can't be installed. Also this obviously shouldn't happen in the first place.

    TLDR:

My "newly" acquired motherboard fails to read any sort of flash drive, can't successfully install anything related to drivers and bluescreens when trying to restart/shut down (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE) normally, probably due to aforementioned compatibility issues.

If someone would be able to enlighten me as to how to fix this I would be extremely grateful and should you need more information or if something was unclear let me now.

    Cheers

    Edit: No one likes typos.
