    How it looks like now

Hello, friend of mine just asked me to up his WiFi connectivity in his small two story hotel. Right now he has different access points all over the place with same SSID assigned to all of them (although they show as four separate WiFi networks). The signal quality is not very good and the roaming doesn't seem to be working at all. All the APs are connected via ethernet in a weird pattern, as you can see in the attached image. I was thinking about buying 4 Asus devices to make a mesh network, but it seems, as others stated, that Asus doesn't work very well with wired backhaul.

Could you point me in the right direction?

In the end there should be one visible WiFi network and any connected device should seamlessly roam to nearest AP.

Trying to figure out best placement for networking gear and running wire in home without network

    Posted: 15 May 2019 06:42 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/Rjfg2pe

    Hi all,

I've recently bought a new home and I could really use some assistance determining the best placement and routes for my new network. I've included a crudely drawn floor plan above. I didn't include the basement, but essentially it is the same shape as the main floor, and its unfinished, so anything goes down there.

My goal is to get optimal wifi coverage throughout the home and a good chunk of the back yard. I've purchased a Ubiquiti Unifi router, switch, and 3 NanoHD AC's, plus about 500 feet of cat6 wire.

This is a rural property, so we get internet via an antenna on a pole roughly 20 feet above the roof on the north side of the house. The POE cable runs down into the basement on the north side.

My initial plan was to put the router & switch right there in the basement on the north side, then run cat 6 up into the attic for the two AC's in the house. The issue becomes: I want to trench cat6 across the yard to the detached garage. Normally I would've considered a wireless bridge, but since its rural internet, I want to get every ounce out of it that I can (typically maxes out at about 25 down).

Since going from the north side of the house to the detached garage is roughly 150 feet, I believe that is beyond what cat6 is rated for.

So my next thought was to run the antenna POE wire through the basement and put all the network gear in the south side of the basement, it's actually a utility room so I'd almost prefer it in there. Put the router & switch in there, and then run the wire up to the attic from there, as well as out the house to the garage via some trenched conduit.

Am I on the right track? Am I maybe missing something that may be easier? I'm a bit of a networking noob, so any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Question about a shared internett connection in two apartments (second floor has input) me on first only have the WiFi.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 01:18 PM PDT

    Hello.

    Tldr in the bottom.

The place I rent share the same WiFi as the house owner. (don't worry, I always use my VPN) however, periodically the internett is severely unstable and I constantly need to message her to restart the router.

They live in the second floor where the input is, it is then connected to a modem then to a router which we share. They are considering buying a switch, believing this will solve the stability issues..

From my limited understanding the connection is - wall outlet - to modem/router to router.

From their outlet in the second floor, can we directly connect a switch that give us our "own" connection, and when the Internet breaks down I can restart my router to fix it? Skipping past the modem.

As I see it, this cannot be done. It is either to set up a brand new connection outside and have one plug in both apartments, if a restart of the router doesn't help and the switch needs a reboot.

Yes, I know. These things are supposed to be stable, but I am a running joke amongst my friends how computers and phones ALWAYS Fuck up when I am involved.

Tldr: Best way to share one internett connection in two apartments and give both full access to restart connection. Ethernett cables are an option. No shared rooms.

    Thank you for reading.

    Rogue iPad on home network?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 09:54 AM PDT

I have an AirPort Extreme router for my home WiFi network. Other than setting up the base station and WiFi network with a password, it's been pretty much set and forget.

Last night I decided to look through the airport utility and I noticed an extra "iPad" device on my network.

(I'm used to Unifi and Ubiquiti tools at work, so I was pretty surprised at how little information you can glean from the Apple interface)

I checked all of my known devices:

Amazon echo Amazon fire tv iMac iPad Mini iPad iPhone 6s iPhone 7

They were all accounted for via mapping MAC addresses.

That still left one device with host name iPad with an unfamiliar MAC address showing as a wireless client in Airport Utility. It had a local IP address on my subnet.

It showed an average signal, other devices were excellent or good. It showed 39-50 Mbps data transfer on average.

I looked up the MAC 94:E9:6A:17:6B:B6 and the manufacturer was listed as Apple, Apple Inc.

When I updated the base station (not changing password), the rogue iPad reconnected for 2 minutes and then disconnected according to Fing. I haven't seen it since.

I'm trying to look for horses not zebras, but is there something obvious I'm overlooking besides:

    1. There actually is an iPad somewhere in my house that I don't know about or forgot about?

    2. My one neighbor in range somehow got my WiFi passcode and is choosing to connect an iPad to my WiFi rather than his own network?

    Thanks!

Ditching Verizon Router in New Apartment

    Posted: 15 May 2019 01:07 PM PDT

Hi all, I consider myself pretty tech-savvy but networking is not my area of expertise. I was looking for some help in figuring out what solution to go with for my 2BR - 1 BA apartment (1 floor) We have fios with the gigabit package, and I was looking to take advantage of it for streaming 4k and playing video games.

We don't have too many devices hooked up currently (TV and Xbox/Switch hardwired, with 2 phones, a watch, and 2 computers on Wifi). I was looking at different solutions, but it looks like most things have issues.

I've been leaning towards a UniFi AC Lite + EdgeRouter Lite 3, but I'm hesitant about the lack of MIMO. I'm not sure if it makes that much of a difference though considering how often I've seen that pair posted as a recommendation.

Just trying to make sure I make the right call for a piece of equipment that I'm going to get a TON of use out of for the next few years. Thank you for the help!

Need help choosing hardware for new home.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:32 AM PDT

Networking is not my strong suit. I'll be using a modem for the cable service from xfinity, and I would like a router that has physical ethernet ports, not just a strictly wifi router.

If possible, I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction regarding repeaters or extenders, the house is 3500 sqft, 3 floors, and with a decent amount of active outdoor area that I would like wifi to cover.

Hardware I've been seeing on newegg is a tossup when looking at the reviews so it's hard to decide.

Can someone explain how the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz band work together?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:24 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have the EAP225 AP from TP-Link, when setting up the basic settings, I have the option to add both 2.4 and 5.0 bands on 1 SSID, how does that work? Is it better this way?

I used to have another router that separated the 2.4 and 5.0 into two SSIDs, which I have done in the picture. Which way is more efficient? Separate the bands or together?

Can I create a private network with a public connection?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 11:36 AM PDT

I currently live on a military base with one available ISP. The ISP (Boingo) only allows three MAC addresses access to the internet per account and it is only wireless connections. I was wondering if I could connect a range extender wirelessly to Boingo's network and then to a router, allowing me to add the MAC Addresses of the extender and router to my account and anything that connected to the router would not come up as a unique MAC address. I mostly need this because my kindle is not having Boingo's WiFi show up and hopefully my router would work. Thanks in advance.

Horrible WiFi with router 1 foot from phones/computers, will a new router fix this?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 06:37 PM PDT

I recently moved in with my girlfriend for the summer and set up our Network. I brought a brand new modem and router that I was using at my college apartments with zero issues. I noticed that this complex is much bigger, with tons of other routers around.

Now I am literally getting .5 mb/s doing a speed test directly in front of the router. I can't play my Xbox online during peak hours (between 4 pm and 9 pm) without some of the most insane lag I have ever seen, my inputs are delayed by 5-6 seconds, if they even happen. My computer connected with Ethernet works just fine.

The router is a cheaper TP link router (N450 model). Will me upgrading actually help? I have attempted to switch channels and that doesnt work either.

About to hardwire my house and have a couple of questions

    Posted: 15 May 2019 10:45 AM PDT

Hello! I just recently bought a house with my wife and our new neighborhood offers gigabit internet. That's awesome. So i went and bought a Unifi system off amazon. Cloud Key, USG, 8 port PoE switch, AC Pro. All high quality hardware rated for 1Gb internet. Now I'm in the process in buying wire to make drops in the rooms I want ethernet jacks.

    My questions are:

    1. Should I pay extra for cat6 or stick with 5e cable?

    2. When terminating the ends, do you recommend 568A or 568B wire pattern?

Reliable Router Suggestions for Around $100

    Posted: 15 May 2019 10:03 AM PDT

My current router has pretty much died, and I'm looking to buy a replacement. But I keep getting scarred off by reviews of them going bad after only a few months (needing regular resets, unstable connection, etc.). And so, I'm hoping for a little guidance, what router would you recommend for around $100?

A little insight about my situation, in case it would help. My house has 4 people who'd likely all be on at the same time. We have 2 PC's that will be plugged directly into the router, one of which does a lot of gaming (hence my concern about the unstable connection). We also use Netflix, but usually only one person is streaming at a time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

    One Simple Question

    Posted: 15 May 2019 07:45 PM PDT

If I put a single wall port in each room and hook up an 8 port switch in each of those single wall ports will that be better, worse or the same as if I have a bigger main switch going to 8 wall ports (2x 4 port plates) per room?

Do I need a Unifi brand switch for Unifi Wifi VLAN's to work?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 10:24 AM PDT

This may be a really dumb question, but here goes.

I want to pass multiple VLAN's to my Unifi AP, so that each of them will have a unique SSID - basically segregating IOT devices and such. There is a PFSense passing out VLAN traffic to a TPLink TL-SG108E.

Now, will this TPLink switch work for this? Or do I have to buy a Unifi branded switch to put "before" the AP?

I can't find any tutorials specifically on this, so am assuming it's a no-go?

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Fixed. Much thanks to everyone, especially Thorus08 and OtherTechnician. They were absolutely correct.

For anyone viewing this in the future: The switch port which your Unifi AP is connected to needs to be untagged for whichever VLAN the Unifi Controller is residing in (also check your PVID for that port).

The other VLAN's on that switch port should be tagged.

In retrospect, I'm not sure why I thought the AP would magically punch through unknown VLAN ID's to find its way to the controller. I guess the thing that was putting me off was the fact that the controller seemed to find the AP but would display "Adoption Failed".

Anyways, hope I've helped any future fellow idiots out.

    Thanks again, everyone!

Curious to know do you guys find any pattern in this bunch of numbers?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 06:15 PM PDT

any of you find a pattern in the following set of numbers:

    "F181S0, P639G0, N509U0"

An obvious pattern is alphabet, followed by 3 numbers, followed by S followed by 0.

It doesn't represent mac addresses, nor ip addresses, nor ipv6 address.. just thought I would ask here.

How to use a smartphone hotspot as internet connection for wireless network?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 06:10 PM PDT

    Hi. I need some guidance.

I would like to set up a wireless network (to connect my laptop, a raspberry pi, maybe a printer etc.) that can use a smartphone's hotspot as a connection to the internet. The network should be available without a smartphone since it will be used that way most of the time but occasionally I need internet access. So I was thinking maybe there is a way to make my smartphones connection available to the entire network (through its hotspot functionality I'd assume).

I'd really appreciate if someone can tell me if that is possible and what device (or if need be what combination of devices) would be required (maybe even a recommendation?)

    Thanks in advance, cheers!

    Constant T3 and T4 timeouts

    Posted: 15 May 2019 06:08 PM PDT

Hello all, I've been having issues with Comcast's internet service almost since I've had them and i'm going insane trying to figure this issue out. I've searched on this subreddit's other posts for a solution to no avail. After around a month or so of having the service, i started getting T3 timeouts for about a week after we had a blizzard (Colorado). I had an appointment for it and was told by the tech service guy that it's due to the old wiring in the area and when it gets cold, it causes issues. by that point it had mostly stopped but i let it go. then again about 2 months later, it happened for about another week and then stopped on it's own. However, it's been doing it for about 3 weeks now and i'm going insane because i can't make it through a single movie without 3-4 disconnections.

I should make it clear that i bought my own modem/router combo device, a Net-gear C6220. Basically, the modem/router will kick all devices off the WiFi and deny the computer connected via Ethernet internet service for about a minute and a half to 2 minutes, however it won't fully restart, just allow internet traffic to resume. Additionally, the device's LED's don't show that it's losing it's communication with Comcast's service. After having 3 tech visits in which none of them could solve the issue, i decided to factory reset the modem/router. It worked for about 4 days before occurring again making me think at first it was my device causing the issues, but now the factory resets don't seem to fix it anymore so i don't know what's at fault.

I've tried factory resets, WiFi channel changes, changing which outlet the modem/router is plugged into, changing the coax cable, disconnecting all Ethernet devices plugged into it, placing a cooling pad under it, etc. Nothing seems to be fixing it, and Net-gear has offered to replace it, however they want me to send this one back first, or pay $16 to have one shipped to me first and then return mine, however they refuse to let me have it shipped to a different location since i'm not at my apartment most of the daytime and it would almost definitely get stolen.

Last night was when i tried the different outlet for the modem/router, and i don't know if it's related, but I've started noticing T4 timeouts along with the T3 timeouts. I don't know much about any of this but if anyone could help i would be eternally grateful :(

Here's the latest event log from the device:

EDIT: Removed log due to mac address being in it. Can repost however if someone needs it.

Looking for ideas on making a small network which accesses the internet through 4g

    Posted: 15 May 2019 05:20 PM PDT

I volunteer with a non-proffit organization. We meet in a building with no access to any wired or wireless networks. We have a 4g hotspot to which five clients can connect over wifi, but it lacks the range to reach everywhere we need it to in the extremely thick-walled, wifi-hating building we use.

What I'm wondering about is building a mesh network whose access to the internet is via 4g. We aren't allowed to make any structural changes to the building, so can't run ethernet. My hope is to find a way to connect a standard mesh wifi system to a 4g access point, but I know nothing about 4g hardware. What would we need to support all the traffic from up to 10 users on the wifi? Can we pay for a standard cellular data plan, or does something like this cost more? Our data usage wouldn't normally be too high, as we only meet once a week and use the building for a few weekend activities per year. We're not looking for an enterprise solution so we can run a business through cellular, just good wifi that allows us to access the web for Google Docs, email, the web portal with which we manage our members' data, and other relatively light tasks.

If anyone knows what's out there and what we should or should not look at, I'd appreciate the input. I'm fine with setting up the wifi part, but I've never touched 4g gear before. Thanks.

TPLink TD9660 no internet until off and on the router

    Posted: 15 May 2019 05:17 PM PDT

I bought the router 2 days ago. In that period of time my internet went off 7 times. All those circumstances I've always waited 30 minutes to internet come back but it didn't. But, whenever I power off and power on the router, internet always come back in normal connection time (15-20 secs).

Can any router have a problem lile that? Or all of those experiences are coincidence?

My WRT 1900AC crapped out - what's the best for range in an old big house?

    Posted: 15 May 2019 05:03 PM PDT

Hey so I was never really thrilled with my WRT1900AC (first generation) router. I live in a 113 year old big brick and steel house (it's literally made out of bricks and steel) and never got good wifi - so I got this router and it was pretty good on range. But it would periodically get hot and need to be rebooted. Now it seems to have died. I would love to know what current router would give the best range in an old house. I use the Actiontec FIOS router for DHCP but that radio is off, and I use NO features on the WRT, it is literally just in Bridge Mode - so I'm looking for range only. Not looking for mesh, I want just one box.

    Internet Service Issues

    Posted: 15 May 2019 04:23 PM PDT

    Hello, everyone.

I'm not sure if this is the correct sub for this, so I apologize if it belongs somewhere else.

For the past several weeks, my Internet service has been sporadic. Much of the time it works fine, but at least once per day it goes out for between a few minutes and a few hours at a time. This is very frustrating for someone who spends 60+ hours each week online.

What I'm wondering is whether the problem is on my ISP's (WOW!) end, or with the modem. I'm using the default one WOW! provides. Frankly, I don't even want to bother calling and having a tech come out, as the consensus of the numerous reviews from my area is that doing so seldom solves any problems, and it's just a huge waste of time (they seem to have a horrible track record where I live). Is there a way I can determine myself whether or not the modem is causing my connection problems? If any more info is needed, let me know and I'll do my best to provide it. Thanks.

Is an NBN box a modem? Nat issues.

    Posted: 15 May 2019 03:41 PM PDT

My question is as the title states, Is the NBN box considered a Modem?

I'm using a F@ST3864V2 router and have had chronic issues with NAT restrictions and forwarding ports, only to test them and find them still closed.
From a little research I think it could be a double NAT issue assuming that said box is also a modem, though I'm quite out of my depth here.

Failing that would it be worth buying a new router and going from there?
I feel like there's little I can do on my current router to fix it settings wise, although I could just be missing it because I don't know what to look for.

I'm using optus for the NBN, speeds are 100/40 Mbps, I connect my primary PC via Ethernet cable and tend to use it for gaming, playing on or hosting servers for older games, and only use wifi on mobile devices or my laptop for things like social media, youtube, and netflix.

Any info to go off will be appreciated.

    Cottage networking scenario

    Posted: 15 May 2019 02:44 PM PDT

So I've just bought a cottage (well, technically a park model trailer) in a campground and I'm looking for ideas about the best way to network. So the campground offers internet at 100 bucks a year "per device". Their WiFi network is behind a captive portal. I want to put a router in that will attach to their WiFi network and broadcast my own around the trailer. I'd also potentially like to have a LTS connection as a fail over.

    Thoughts?
