Bought a 4k Monitor; now mouse has random seizures

    Posted: 02 May 2019 08:30 PM PDT

Update: Lowering the polling rate from 1000hz seems to have done the trick. I had one quick stutter when I changed the rate to 500hz, but I haven't had any in the couple of minutes I've been browsing Chrome. Thank you to everyone that posted! I will update if the issue returns.

    Hello everyone,

I have been using a 1080p 144hz monitor for a couple months now, and recently switch to a 4k 60hz monitor. However, I know have an issue with the 4k monitor where my mouse will freeze, lag, or otherwise glitch out. The cursor on the screen will- at random intervals- skip a beat/jump/stutter as if it was disconnected/reconnected in the space of a second. During this time, the cursor will repeatedly appear frozen, then unfrozen for a period of 3-5 seconds.

I have this issue whether I'm in a game application, browsing Chrome, or just looking through my files.

I'm currently using a wireless mouse that uses a 2.4 USB receiver.

I have never experienced this issue on my 1080p, so I want to think that it's the new monitor that's the issue.

    My Specs:

    • Ryzen 5 2400g
    • Nvidia 1080ti
    • 16gb 3200mhz Ram
    • Logitech G305 Wireless Mouse

    Things I have tried:

    • Uninstall/Reinstall Mouse Drivers
    • Using a different mouse/USB port
    • Changed Refresh-rate related settings in Nvidia Control Panel (GSYNC, Freesync, Vertical sync)
    • Tried changing to/from HDMI/Display Port
    • Checked my CPU/RAM/Storage usage but nothing out of the ordinary
    • Virus-scanned
    • Changing back to 1080 resolution on the 4k monitor fixes the issue

If anybody has had the same experience, or input, I greatly appreciate your knowledge. I'm at my wit's end trying to diagnose the issue with Youtube, old forum posts, and tech articles. Thank you in advance!

Did i kill my computer with AMD Overdrive?

    Posted: 03 May 2019 04:55 AM PDT

Hello, I have a (probably big) problem with my computer (Windows 10, 64 Bit). I wanted to play star citizen and heard it could optimize the performance to overclock your CPU. So i downloaded AMD Overdrive to overclock my FX 9-Thousand-Something. I slightly highered the HT ref. clock setting, applied and my pc crashed with a BSOD. Since then, I will get a blue screen whenever I start my pc. Sometimes while windows is starting, sometimes when i try to log in with various error codes reaching from driver problems to unhandled exceptions and failures of critical processes. Loading the bios failsafe settings does not change anything about that. What can I do? I would really ich appreciate any help since I really dont know what to do! Thanks in advance!

Limit total time on computer per day, on an administrator account.

    Posted: 03 May 2019 03:01 AM PDT

Hope this is the right place to post this, doesn't feel like it but I don't know where else.

I want to force myself cut down on how much I use my computer, but I'm having trouble finding something that works well- cutting off just the internet is unhelpful, and a timer for the plug would only let me use it at specific times, not really something I want. It seems I can limit the total number of hours spent per day through parental controls, but this is my computer (windows 10, btw) and I'm the administrator, obviously, so that won't really work. Any suggestions here? Any programs that might work?

Sorry if this isn't the right sub, feel free to point me in the right direction.

Specific audio file in a video won't work on certain speakers

    Posted: 03 May 2019 04:40 AM PDT

    Hi there!

I'm working on a documentary for a big competition, but I'm having an issue. There's a specific audio file in the video that, for whatever reason, won't play on certain speakers. It's only that clip, and nothing else from the video - everything else works fine. It will play on my computer's speakers as both the YouTube video and the file, but will not play on my phone's speakers as either - however, it will play if I'm using a Bluetooth speaker. I'm not sure what speakers they'll have at the competition (it didn't work at the last level of competition with their PC's speakers, either as the YouTube video or the file), so I'm hoping to get this sorted before then.

I've tried redownloading the audio (it's a clip of a White House press briefing I've downloaded from a YouTube video) and converting it into different formats (.m4a, .mp3, .mov because QuickTime is weird), but to no avail. I'm using a MacBook Air and editing with iMovie.

Any advice would be wonderful - I'm normally relatively good with tech, but this has both me and my cybersecurity buff dad stumped. I just need any sort of suggestion on how to fix it or an alternate way I could do things to make it work.

    Thank you!!

Keyboard repeating the same letter when I plug in the charger

    Posted: 02 May 2019 10:41 PM PDT

I use an external keyboard for my laptop and I've been having an issue lately where it repeats the same letter whenever I try writing with it. I've tried multiple solution like cleaning the keyboard and trying different usb ports but the only thing that worked is unplugging the charger from the laptop!

Whenever I re-plug in my charger the problems happens.

The charger is new and I got a few days ago because my older one stopped working and it has identical ratings (voltage, current) to my older one.

    What can I do?

Edit: I tried removing the battery and using the charger only but the problem still occurs.

SSD started running very hot all of a sudden

    Posted: 02 May 2019 10:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone - I'm not a complete beginner with hardware but nowhere experienced enough to fix this myself and will take it into a repair shop if necessary.

I have a 3 and a half year old Lenovo Ideapad 700, it has a 1TB WD SATA and I bought a Toshiba 128gb SSD to give it a boost by having the OS running on a separate physical drive at the same time and it was installed by the shop when I bought the laptop. It has been great until now but I think it may be failing - I just don't know enough about such things.

I live in a developing country with many people who's genuine intentions are bigger than ability and a lot of rip-off merchants so I prefer to know what I'm dealing with before seeking help - I had a great guy but he's not where he used to be and I have no idea how to pronounce his name, let alone translate it into Thai squiggles so finding him isn't going to happen. I also have a new laptop in the budget for about 10 months from now, so prefer not to spend anything unnecessarily (but don't mind spending if I have to as I can't be without it).

In the last week, my laptop has been getting horribly hot, not helped by the fact it's over 40 degrees Celsius here so I put the extra heat down to the ambient air at first. I took the cover off and cleaned out the fans and airflow mesh this morning, not clean but not really bad to say it's been a year since I did it and it runs about 18 hours per day, every day, (almost always on mains). I turned it on whilst open to see both fans were working and if I could see where the heat was coming from, and it's the extra little SSD that I bought. Would this generally mean that this SSD is starting to fail? It is running a (little bit) less hot since cleaning, but the high heat starts almost as soon as I boot up - within less than a minute. I have no no vital data left on the SATA, and by backing up I have free-ed up enough space on it for a new partition to install Windows onto if this will help.

If it is the 128GB SSD, would installing Windows on a partition on the SATA work?; as in, would the system just ignore the now empty and formatted faulty one or would it still heat it up anyway? I don't want to cook the board or processors.

    So, things that I can do on my own if I know I should try (without risking worsening things);

1 Is sudden and extreme heat from an SSD a sign that it is on it's last legs or more likely a bigger problem?

2 Would just installing Windows onto the SATA and ignoring it work?

3 Is that even possible without changing the BIOS? I have a bootable ISO that allows me to choose where to install Windows and I suppose it would be seamless. Would I have to disconnect it somehow to stop it getting hot though?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give. If just walking into a shop was possible, I really would just do that.

EDIT - I forgot to mention that I ran SPECCY and it's telling me that my (Intel Core i7 6700HQ @ 2.60GHz) CPU is sitting between 38 and 40 degrees which I can live with as it's still doing some file moving. I didn't have it installed prior to cleaning, but performance isn't and hasn't been an issue so far, just the very hot spot where the SSD is. That said, I don't want to do nothing and find the CPU or anything else cooks because I didn't do something.

Windows Randomly Locks up, Win 8 and Win 10

    Posted: 03 May 2019 04:07 AM PDT

A couple of months ago my PC started locking up completely, no blue screen, just frozen on whatever I was doing. It's been increasing in frequency over time.

Freezes will occur seemingly at random, under load (gaming, video editing, working and even just idling)

I can't see anything in the event logs before the crashes, there are a few DOTCOM errors after booting into Windows.

CPU temp seems fine, idling at around 16c (I live in England, and it's not very hot here either)

I'm running Malwarebytes, and it's not detecting any viruses.

So far, I've made sure Windows is fully up to date, graphics card drivers are up to date, I tested the RAM, then just replaced it (felt like upgrading anyway), tested the PSU (then replaced that anyway as it was getting old), run a disk check on all 3 disk drives, then ran a Kingston SSD manager check on the SSD that has Windows on it and I've replaced the BIOS battery.

If anyone has any ideas what to check next / how to check that would be really helpful. Feel like I'm flying blind given the lack of errors and warnings. A couple of replacement parts were fairly justifiable, but I can't keep swapping bits out at random, I might as well build a new PC, which I can't really afford right now.

    PC Specs:

    Win 10 Pro, 1809 (x64)

    MSI-7693

    Corsair TX650M PSU

    AMD FX-6300

    GeForce GTX-960

    16GB DDR 3 Ram

Kingston SSD 240 GB (SV300S37A240G) (Main OS SDD)

Seagate Baracuda 1TB (ST331000520AS) (Used only for pictures, video and music)

WD Blue 1TB (WD10EZEX-08M2NA0) (Used only for Steam)

Whenever I type a single character into the start menu search bar, the start menu closes. Whenever I right click something on my taskbar, the window that normally pops up also instantly closes.

    Posted: 03 May 2019 04:04 AM PDT

So these two problems have been happening on and off for a couple months now, always together at the same time. The start menu can open and stay opened, but as soon as I type anything in the search bar, it will immediately close, not letting me actually search for anything. As for the taskbar issue, if I right click an empty space on it the window that pops up works perfectly fine. But if I right click an icon, the window that should appear instantly closes as well.

Sometimes the problem will disappear and not show up for a week or so, everything will work fine, and then will randomly end up happening again out of nowhere.

I'm using windows 10, and the only things I have thought to try are antivirus scans, checking for available windows updates, and trying a different mouse. None of which have worked. I'd have liked to troubleshoot the issue more but it has been pretty hard for me to find people with similar problems, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

3m DP Cable not working with EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW3

Are there any known problems with this graphics card and longer DP-Cables?

Hope this is the right place to post. Wifi issue.

    Posted: 03 May 2019 12:06 AM PDT

Hey guys and gals, so basically I have an odd issue. Maybe someone can help.

So, I live in a good area in terms of broadband speed/reliability, we've had no issues except one involving Wi-fi on my phone.

It used to work flawlessly, but now for example it will be okay for a few seconds, load stuff fine and then it will start being super slow, just not load at all, or drop.

Now, we thought this might be just my phone as all other devices we have work fine (3DS, iPhone, Samsung tablet, PS4, etc) and I've also connected to my gf's hotspot and that works perfectly fine too.

We've reset the router, turned the Wi-Fi on and off, changed passwords, made my phone "forget" it and re-connected, restarted phone, all that jazz.

    I've got a kinda old phone (Samsung A5 2016) running 7.0 (I think)

    Any help would be appreciated.

Duplicating old hard drive files to new HDD

    Posted: 03 May 2019 03:43 AM PDT

Got a quick question about transferring files over from my old hard drive which is malfunctioning, over onto a new HDD. Just wondering how I would go about mirroring the files so that all of my directories stay the same, and if my PC would be able to detect all of the directories on the new HDD. I would just start fresh but I have a lot of directories that take a long time to re create, any help would be appreciated, cheers.

Am I being data-capped by my ISP?

    Posted: 03 May 2019 03:40 AM PDT

Background story: About a month ago I got 750Mbps down/up internet from T-Mobile in the Netherlands. It went fine and all, but since I do cloud-gaming (which uses a lot of bandwidth), I think they data-capped me.

When I first got this service I had good down-up speed. Around 750Mbps.

Now see, a week ago, before my new monthly subscription renewed, I always got 250Mbps up and down with Cat5e connected with the modem. Always. Never more, never less. Even WiFi 5GHz gave the same: 250Mbps up and down, locked.

So I called the customer service, and they didn't have a clue what's going on either. We were talking for 40 minutes on the phone, trying everything, in the end I just reset the modem and it went back to 750Mbps.

Guess what: the next day it went back to 250Mbps. So I called them again, told them what I did previous time. This time again: 'I don't know what's going on, best you can do is reset the modem.'

But look: now that the new monthly subscription is in, and my down-and up are back to a constant 750Mbps. Are they data capping me?
