This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Thanks to this sub, I've built my first ever PC and I couldnt be happier with how it turned out.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:59 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm a high schooler and I recently built my very first computer. The only computers I've had in my house before are the family Mac with an i5 and some laptops with no better than i5 processors either, and never anything with a graphics card.

    Here's my part list:

    CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor ($365.99 @ Amazon) CPU Cooler: be quiet! - Dark Rock 4 CPU Cooler ($74.90 @ Amazon) Motherboard: Gigabyte - Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($194.99 @ Amazon) Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($129.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Samsung - 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($77.98 @ Amazon) Storage: Seagate - Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.88 @ Newegg) Video Card: Gigabyte - GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB WINDFORCE OC Video Card ($359.99 @ Newegg) Case: NZXT - H500 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ Amazon) Power Supply: EVGA - BQ 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($69.99 @ Amazon) Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home Full 32/64-bit ($129.99 @ Newegg) Monitor: Dell - S2719DGF 27.0" 2560x1440 155 Hz Monitor ($368.75 @ Amazon) Keyboard: Redragon - S101 Wired Gaming Keyboard w/Optical Mouse ($34.99 @ Amazon) Speakers: Logitech - Z200 0 nW 2ch Speakers ($22.99 @ Newegg) Other: Audio Technica ATR-2500 USB Cardioid Condenser Microphone (Purchased For $74.99) Total: $2035.41 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This is my very own PC, not a family one for once and so far I can run every game at max settings or ultra, which is awesome. Also, 144hz is so smoooooth it's amazing. And the LOAD TIMES. AHHAHHAHAAH so fast.

I did run into some trouble building it like I didn't know how to connect the front panel wires to the motherboard, since it came with a kind of connector between them as well.

I also had to take out a case fan at first to be able to put in the motherboard, and I forgot to connect all my PSU cables beforehand so I ended up scratching myself trying to connect the cable to the GPU lol.

I also had trouble booting up, buy I just disconnected my GPU and used the integrated graphics to set it up and install drivers to my graphics card while it was disabled, and then I switched back.

You guys gave a lot of help whenever I wasn't sure on a purchase or problem, for which I'm really thankful.

Overall, this was super fun and I still find it hard to believe that I did it. My friends are also looking into building PCs now and I'm looking forward to helping them out.

New to Reddit not to PC building

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:31 AM PDT

Hello from Dallas Texas I am Luis, used to be active in Overclock.net under the pseudonym Luis G. and Ive been bitten with the bug since I was 10 but didnt start building PCs until 16. Recently I missed putting gaming PCs together after 3 years of retiring. I moved my focus towards being a one man MSP provider. I have done around 81 builds for locals in the DFW area over the past 12 years, not counting server farms, datacenters, workstations etc. My builds take 1 to 2 weeks, with all of the time going towards testing of every component. Cpu OC must pass 72 hrs of stress testing along with memory. Gpu must pass 72 hrs of stress testing. Lastly both must pass 72 hrs of full load. Those are the major test. This guarantees there will be no saturation issues after 4 or 5 hrs of gaming. I would also test Usb throughput, as well as mobo connectors and drives where possible. Usually Id charge $150 to maybe $250 if it involved complex custom watercooling lines so it was a very inexpensive build cost.

Recent I met a person in Microcenter back in November we chatted over time and he asked if I knew anyone who sold prebuilts on Friday two weeks ago. I had the itch bad enough I was considering rebuilding my PC despite me not gaming that much. So I offered to help for free that way I wouldnt have to explain to my wife why I was spending her money and Id scratch my itch. So after a long time looking for parts and making a 2nd trip to microcenter we completed his first gaming PC and my # 81 build.

Ive left the AIO for him to cable manage. But heres the Build. It was so rushed I didnt get a chance to plan it for proper cable management.

Are people on Craigslist in your town crazy with overpricing computer electronics?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:44 AM PDT

I was looking at computer components on Craigslist and I can't believe the crazy prices people are asking for. Used components for nearly original sale price. I mean it's insane.

Is it the same in your town?

    1080p 144Hz or 1440 144Hz

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:59 AM PDT

    Budget is around $400.

I play Esports games 80% the time: csgo, dota, apex etc...

The other 20% I spend on popular indie and AAA titles like Sekiro, Metro, Stardew, Risk of Rain 2, etc...

    I have a Ryzen 2700X, RTX 2070, 16 GB ram 3200MHz

Preferred monitor specs: 27 in although 24 is fine, and I don't really need Gsync

I'm currently gaming on 1080 60Hz, been too lazy to upgrade these past 5 years

What type of monitor would I get the most benefit out of with the games I play?

Last night I found the receipt while cleaning out some files, I built my computer (with the help of /r/buildapc ) 6 years ago.

A couple years back I put a video card in it.

It runs like a top, and I just wanted to say thank you to lovely people of this sub, and to those thinking of building your first, do it!

    That's all.

I have 2x GTX1080s and 128GB of RAM! I want to make a monster build! MOTHERBOARD HELP

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:46 AM PDT

Hi so basically want repurpose some hardware which was in a server build, but never really ended up getting used.

    Heres a little pic: https://imgur.com/a/R1hm6oG

    So we have:

    2x GTX 1080 GPUs

    8x16gb (Kingston 2Rx4 PC4 - 2400t - RA1 - 11) Ram

    2 x Xeon E5-2630V4 CPU

Bunch of SATA SSDs (I plan to have two striped together for OS, and one for to use as a scratch drive in Adobe Premier)

My question is how do i best utilise all of these components to make the best machine for Video editing, motion graphics and 3D animation. My main concern is choosing the correct motherboard? Is it possible to utilise both processor and 8 sticks of ram in an upright tower PC? Do i need any specific PSU to power all of this?

Are these processors even worth using? Would it be better to just utilise just the RAM and GPU and spend a bit on a new processor?

Its been a good 7 years or so since my last PC build so my knowledge is a little rough atm. So any help to point me in the right direction would be amazing

My parents won't let me build a PC

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:29 PM PDT

I'm in high school in the UK (I will be 17 this year) and I've been researching PC parts and budgeting for months for my first build. I also have a decent amount of money saved up for the build, and a while ago my parents said they'd be fine with contributing a small amount of money towards a new computer at some point (although whilst it wouldn't be ideal I'd be able to pay for the whole thing myself if I had to).

I recently finalised my build and brought the topic up with them today. However they seemed to have completely gone back on what they said before and wouldn't let me get the components or build the PC.

They said that now wasn't the right time to build one (they seemed to imply that the "right time" was after my last year of school or university) and that it would be a complete distraction from my exams and preparation for university admissions tests and interviews.

Whilst I do have a very small number of mock exams coming up soon, I am currently doing extremely well in school and am predicted the highest possible grades in all my subjects. I already spend more than enough time preparing for university admissions and doing extra work out of choice (e.g. writing maths papers) and still have a good amount of free time left over. I'm also not one of those people who becomes addicted to gaming, letting their studies suffer, so this issue really isn't a concern for me at all. My parents seem to still think I'm not doing enough work though.

My parents really seem to think that getting a PC will affect my school work, exam results or university preparation, even though I have a lot of time left over and am working hard on all these things. They also seem concerned that if I got a PC it would be difficult to set up and then after I got it working I would always be glued to it and never do anything else.

I don't know if it's immature to get upset about this, but I have been planning and researching this build for months and I've been looking forward to finally getting to build a PC for forever, so it is a little crushing having the whole idea shut down like this. My parents don't seem to appreciate the work I've put into this.

Although I have the money I obviously can't order components without their permission (think what would happen if I did), so suggesting something like that wouldn't help. I don't want to wait ages to build it as prices now are a lot lower than what they have been at times throughout the past year.

How do I convince them to allow me to build a PC and that it will in fact not wreck my academics and make me glued to a screen constantly without ever doing anything else?

2 monitors, different resolutions, only want games played on one.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:17 PM PDT

I have a 4k monitor and a 1080p monitor both at different refresh rates. I was wondering how to set up both of them but have it to where my games only play on one while the other is used for browsing the web and such. Whenever I try and set it up it'll just make it one giant screen which isn't what i want really. Can anyone help me do this? Thanks again!

Help with getting a mobo for a tower im already using?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:52 PM PDT

so i have this prebuilt pc i got for the purpose of upgrading it over time in 2016:

CyberPowerPC Gamer Ultra Desktop AMD FXSeries 8GB Memory 1TB Hard Drive BlackBlue GUA100BST-https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-ultra-desktop-amd-fx-series-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-black-blue/4593000.p?skuId=4593000

i have a GTX960 that i replaced the old video drive in and thats really how ive played since. excellent in almost every way at the time.

but now i wanna upgrade and im already upgrading the ram since its the cheapest and futureproof (as in i still will have this if i upgrade other parts i wont have to upgrade that too urgently as soon as i upgrade another part.)

i want to upgrade my motherboard next but idk if prebuilt PC's make it so that they only work with the stock mobo or not.

and the rest will come but for right now i just need this advice.

Adding fans to a 1080ti oc strix

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:22 PM PDT

Okay so I have a h500i case with a zenith extreme mobo and a wraith ripper cooler, and the 1080ti asus strix, I have to have the card on the 3rd slot for full x16 support since my cooler blocks the 1st slot, this puts it fairly close to the bottom of the case, temps aren't insane maybe like 76ish when playing ac odysee on ultra, I found a 3D model for a pcie card thatll hold two 80mm fans, the gpu has to 4pin headers on the side, and I was thinking about putting them above it since they can't fit below, would I have them blowing down onto the card or blowing upwards towards the two exhaust fans in the upper left since it'll be right above the card? And anyone suggest some good fans? I found some noctua and be quite ones I'm considering, thanks!

New 1440p 144hz. Second build. Looking for advice.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:57 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yep.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

1440p 144hz gaming rig. Streaming via OBS. General use outside of that.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I don't tend to play cutting edge. The odd high end game, but I'm more likely to be playing an MMO and FF XV than I am the new Battlefield, for instance.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I don't want to go over 3k Canadian, all in. Components only. Have mouse/keyboard and getting a new shiny monitor separately.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Frappe Snowland/The Frozen North/Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/denicalis/saved/W4BDxr

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Am I missing anything, or is there anything I should adjust? Open to criticism here, as it's the second full build I've done. Some of the parts are definitely there for future-proofing, and I like the excessive amount of USB for peripherals, but again: I'm open to corrections.
