    Hello,

I hope my post is okay here.

My questions below (TL;DR)...but I hope you'll also read my long "backstory." (Sorry, these might be a no-brainer but I'm in a panic-ish mode thanks and screw you, Windows 10.)

    1. What is the best distro for me? (As a noob, I can not conceive of the idea of "distro-hopping" yet. Forever Windows user here.)
    2. Do you think I can learn the least "required" Linux knowledge in, like, 2 to 4 weeks?
    3. Is it okay to just wipe out Windows and install Linux right away, especially on the brand new laptop? (Haven't tried the wiping out yet, though. Not so techie!)
    4. What one Linux resource/website can you recommend that can give me the "progressive education" and that I can stick with (for the least overwhelm experience)?
    5. Any tips for the noob?
    6. (Privacy-speak) I don't live in any of the Five/Nine/Fourteen Eyes countries. I actually think it's nuts for me to move to Linux. But...should I take the leap anyway? Or is Windows 10 not that big of a deal for the average person—with average PC needs—like me?

    ---

    The backstory:

I've been a Windows user all my life, but not-really-techie because I haven't tried building a PC or un/installing OS'es yet.

Today I just got a brand new laptop. It's meant to be a backup unit for my main workstation/desktop PC.

The new laptop has pre-installed Windows 10. Because it's a privacy nightmare, I asked the guys at the store whether they could downgrade it to 8.1, but they couldn't because its hardware isn't compatible with 8.1 anymore.

The other day I thought I might "like" using Linux primarily because of the privacy/security/freedom it offers. It was also just then I started reading about Linux.

However, after browsing r/privacy and r/privacytoolsIO, I realized I DO want to stay away from the shit that is Windows 10...or any Windows for that matter. Kinda growing sick of the drama. I want to have the peace of mind in that the things that run in my units are the only ones I need (and hopefully understand).

Honestly, it's like I don't want to deal with Windows anymore, ever.

If it helps, I enjoy simplicity. I don't need the best UX. I pretty much need things to just work.

I even looked for ways to make Windows 10 "private." Fortunately they don't exist!

I just wanted to say all of this (below, especially) because I don't think I'm "qualified" to run Linux. I don't really do coding/programming.

16 years ago in college, I had one Computer Science class (I think it was C+?) that I passed with an above-average grade. These days, but rarely, I only tweak the CSS of my websites.

I'm a bum-blogger that's about to dive deeper into freelance writing.

Things I usually do/use with my PC:

    • Firefox/Firefox Developer (in the process of getting rid of Chrome for good)
    • Wordpress
    • Youtube
    • MS (2010) Word, Excel
    • Cryptomator
    • 4 cloud-sync apps: Dropbox, Backup and Sync from Google, Sync, and pCloud
    • Skype
    • Calibre E-book Management
    • Zhorn Stickies
    • Microsoft OneNote
    • MPC-HC for movies
    • Windows Media Player for music
    • VPN (for the new laptop)
    • PayPal, online banking, etc.

They're nothing fancy, I guess, but I use my PC for everything—work and personal stuff.

    I don't do gaming, photoshop and video-editing.

And because I'm overwhelmed, I'm sorry I need to state my units' specs:

    My 4+ y/o desktop PC: Windows 8.1, i5-4590 @ 3.30 GHz, x64-based processor, 8 GB RAM DDR3, 1 TB HDD.

    My new laptop: Windows 10, i3-7020U @ 2.30 GHz, x64-based processor, 8 GB RAM DDR4, 1 TB HDD.

I can't believe Windows 10 is making me do this. (Thanks, new laptop?) I used to think, privacy with Windows 10? There must be a way. But nah, the time has come. I even assume Windows is only gonna get worse—is this likely?

    Thanks heaps for reading, TIA!

I have 93GB of free space on my C drive disk. Why can I only shrink ~1GB, and how to fix this?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:10 PM PDT

Looking to make the jump by dualbooting Ubuntu with W10. Attached my current disk partitions here. I would prefer to install Ubuntu to my SSD by shrinking down Windows (in the 230GB partition), however even though it says there's 93GB free space in that partition, I can only shrink a tiny amount.

Why is this the case and how do I address it?

Screen stays black with any distro I try

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:43 PM PDT

So I installed Zorin but when I turned off my pc it didn't boot into zorin and instead booted into grub then I tried all the commands like exit or ls (hd0) etc but nothing worked so I tried to switch to loads of different distros and they either don't boot at all or only install with the compatibility version. No matter how I install it though it's never bootable from my ssd. I have 3 usbs that I've tested. Sometimes it boots to grub with a new iso. Most of the time it boots to black. I'm not dual booting with windows. There are definitely no partitions.

    Can't login into Ubuntu

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:18 PM PDT

Hey, so I'm new to linux and I have been using Ubuntu for about a month now. I don't know what have I done exactly, but I think I messed up, as I'm completely unable to get into ubuntu. When I put in my password and login, my screen freezes and the PC won't take any inputs whatsoever. However, if I chose to login into Ubuntu on Wayland, whatever that means, it works flawlessly. Why? What exactly happened and how do I fix it?

    A Problem With Doom 2016

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:04 AM PDT

Just 30 minutes ago I've encountered an issue with this game running it through Proton. When I load into the game, the graphics get all glitched, and when I attempt to pause the game by pressing the escape key, it freezes. When I've played the game a few days previously, this problem did not exist and Doom ran perfectly fine. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the issue? Here's some relevant info: I am running Linux Mint 19.1 with the 4.15.0-47 kernel, the PPA for Mesa3D and DXVK are up to date, and the version of Proton I am using for Doom is Proton 3.7-8.

Making the switch from Windows to Linux...

How do I remove certain "open with" opens when right clicking a file?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 03:06 AM PDT

I installed Media Monkey for Windows on Linux Mint 19 using Wine to see how it worked. It was horribly slow so I uninstalled it and I'm sticking with gmusicbrowser. It appeared to uninstall perfectly, but when I right click a music or video file, Mint still shows the option to open it with Media Monkey (showing the application 4 times in fact). How do I remove this option and purge Media Monkey from my system?

    Thanks for the help.

Hey guys, so I have been trying to boot arch Linux from my USB to no avail. This is what usually happens when I try it. I am using a Toshiba Satellite C655D. I have tried using different usbs and using different ISOs but nothing works. I create the bootable USB using Rufus .

    xubuntu

    Posted: 11 Apr 2019 08:15 PM PDT

    Hello!

Just installed xubuntu. I prefer the look and feel of xfce which is why I've chosen xubuntu as my first Linux OS. What are the first things I should do to get things setup properly?

Firewall has already been setup. I was trying to get VirtualBox but sudo apt-get virtualbox didn't work. Already got anaconda and Arduino. Both currently required for uni. Already done sudo apt update commands. That's about all I've done so far.

Is it safe to install Linux on a partition on my hard disk ?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 09:52 AM PDT

    Hello Reddit,

My laptop has an SSD where windows is installed and an HDD where I install most of my programs and where I store my data.

Is it safe to create a partition on the HDD and install Ubuntu on it or should I stick with a virtual machine ?

I heard that dual booting can cause problems, for example : I read that Windows can delete Linux after an update.

    Thank you !

Linux was used to assist in the imaging of the first ever black hole as seen in the BBC TV show "How to See a Black Hole".

    Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:26 PM PDT

In the BBC TV show "How to See a Black Hole", which is the culmination of 2 years of shadowing the scientists that imaged the first black hole, I see multiple instances of the use of Linux during all phases of the process. A lot of Macs were used too. It is good to see Linux recognized as a viable tool for this specific accomplishment. You can do real work with Linux. These guys all did a monumental job.

Cant boot Live ISO from usb

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:09 AM PDT

As the title says, I'm having trouble booting from a live USB drive. The computer is a Toshiba T450 currently running Windows 10

Here's what has happened so far:

Downloaded the live ISO of BlackArch

Burned ISO to USB using Rufus

Checked bios settings, Disabled secure boot, Moved USB up in priority

    Boot screen reads:

    UEFI:NTFS (x64)

    Boot Disk: PciRoot(0)/Pci(0x1D,0x00/Usb(0x0,0x0)/Usb(0x2,0x0)

    Disconnecting possible blocking drivers

    Starting NTFS Driver

Started Driver: EfiFs NTFS driver v1.3 (GRUB 2.0)

Locating the first NTFS partition from boot device

Checking if partition needs the NFTS service

    Starting NFTS partition service

    Looking for NFTS EFI loader

    Launching NFTS EFI Loader EFI\boot\bootx64.efi

    Secure Boot Disabled

    Reboot Into Firmware Interface

Any ideas why it just keeps loading the Bios Settings Page? Thanks for the help!

Passwordless user (usermod -p NP vcs-user) - security risk?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 03:28 AM PDT

    Hey!

I'm currently setting up a git server, and for git over ssh, I need to setup a vcs-user with no password. I did so using usermod -p NP vcs-user, and used usermod -s /bin/sh vcs-user to set its shell.

Now, I have "pgit ALL=(phabricator-daemon) SETENV: NOPASSWD: <paths to git, git-upload-pack, git-receive-pack binaries>" in my sudoers file.

This should only allow this passwordless user to use git, git-upload-pack and git-receive-pack, right? Will it be able to access any files?

How do I get Steadyflow to stop stealing focus, reliably?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:33 AM PDT

I've tried to do it in the window manager, and the download popups are still stealing focus away from what I'm doing. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to be typing something only

to have my download get borked because now instead of http:///podcastadress.com/1234.mp3 it now says "to have my" instead. And for some reason steadyflow is the only download tool that will work right now, I've tried wget and gwget and some others, I need steadyflow to work.

Installing and playing Steam games from NFS network drive

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:32 AM PDT

    Hi!

Recently I've removed all HDD drives from my main PC and moved them to the dedicated server. I only use them for storage large files and for archivization so I don't need them in my PC case.

I've started to think about installing Steam games on that configuration and two problems appeard:

    1. Proton games won't work. I think it's because some trouble with installing DirectX and/or VC Redsits packages
    2. I can't download games to my network drive. I had to move Steam's "downloading" folder from NFS drive to my local machine.

I'm not sure what can I improve in this setup, but it would be nice for me if there is a way to handle those problems.

    Any ideas?

Brand new and looking to learn

    Posted: 11 Apr 2019 11:33 PM PDT

Disclaimer: If this post is better suited elsewhere, feel free to delete it or recommend I ask this elsewhere. It doesn't seem to break any rules, but if so I apologize in advance.

Hi! I am absolutely brand new to Linux. I love learning about computers in all forms; however, I realized I've been limiting myself to using Windows as an OS my whole life (mostly anyway). I've always known Linux was a powerful and extremely useful OS for a multitude of computer related tasks but I have always been intimidated by the learning curve required. I've recently decided I wanted to learn Linux (at least some basics to start). I intend to run Linux in VirtualBox on a Windows 10 Laptop (I7 6700 HQ, Nvidia 970M GPU, 16GB RAM if that matters). Basically I have a few questions. I've looked online for the best distro for learning/beginner linux users and the responses vary quite a bit. I understand many start on the more "user friendly" distros but I want to learn it from the ground up. Yet, I also don't want to go so complex I can't find help and tutorials to learn with. The best fit to meet learning from the bottom and building up but still finding resources to learn seems to be Arch Linux but my understanding might be way off. Wondering if people here could validate that this would be a good distro to learn with? If not, better recommendations and why? Also, pointing me in the direction of good learning resources for whatever distros are recommended will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any input or opinions!

How can I disable caching in Linux?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2019 11:45 PM PDT

After a few hours of usage, even if I close all my applications my ram won't completely get free. I read the article of linuxatemyram. The problem is according to the article, it is a healthy behaviour that the os is caching stuff in the background. But, as I open new applications, I can clearly see my swap going up, disk usage going up and my system becoming very slow. Also, I couldn't find any single application taking that much of space in the background. Is it possible to stop caching?

I was monitoring using free and iotop.

Ram is not the problem here as I don't face this issue on windows.

Please help, this is driving me crazy for the last few weeks.

    Office 2016 On Linux Mint?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:24 AM PDT

Hi, Has anybody had any luck installing Office 2016 on any Debian based distros? I know that suits like Libre and WPS exist but I specifically need to use some of the features in Office 2016 for assignment work.

Wine doesn't seem to like it.

I know that others have been posting about this in the past the last one seems to be from 9 months ago - I just want to know if anybody has had any luck?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

zsh crashes terminal on Manjaro half the time i open it

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:12 AM PDT

I just finished installing Manjaro yesterday, today was setting some stuff up, installing zsh and setting it as default shell. Now 60% of the time I open either termite or gnome-terminal they crash. Weirdly enough if I spam a shortcut it's more guaranteed to work, and when trying to record a video as well.

If I remove zsh everything works fine.
