Eluktronics Mech G2 vs Lenovo Y740

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:53 AM PDT

    Hello,

I wanted to ask for your expertise and experience in helping me choose a new laptop! I've been using a 10 year old desktop for gaming so I'm basically limited to only League right now.

I've been following deals on laptops for the past couple of months and got a deal on the y740 with the rtx 2070 for $1500. I just saw a deal on the Eluktronics mech g2 for $1500 with a 2070 as well. Which one is the better deal?

    Need Help Picking a Laptop

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:12 PM PDT

So I'm looking for a semi-good gaming laptop that is similar to my pc, but it needs to cover a few bases.

I need to be able to put in my own SSD, and have it compatible to be a hackintosh laptop. I also need a graphics card card similar in performance to a GTX 1050, and pretty solid battery life.

I don't do really any crazy gaming, just madden and stuff at like medium settings but I like to take it on the go.

Budget is under $800. Any ideas?

Is there any issues that could come with an ACER Aspire 3?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:54 PM PDT

I start Uni in september and will need a laptop whilst im there. The only things i really plan on doing on it are work and the occasional use of the remote play feature for my PS4. My question is, will an ACER aspire 3 be able to last 3 years with usage for large parts of the day?

This is the one I had in mind. https://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-3-15-6-intel-core-i3-laptop-1-tb-hdd-red-10180744-pdt.html?intcmpid=display~RR

Is this a sensible pickup or should I completely avoid it?

Benchmarks for laptops that aren't used for gaming?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:46 PM PDT

NOOB question: Do laptop benchmarks exist for things other than gaming? I imagine benchmarks revolve around the gaming world as these are probably the best performing machines, always on the cutting edge. But are there benchmarks for other uses (like photo editing)? Alternatively, how can a relatively computer ignorant person like myself analyze those benchmarks to apply them to other computer uses? Any resources for learning?

    Laptop Setup

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:36 AM PDT

I have a core i5 7th gen cpu (2.5 GHZ) and a 2GB V-Ram nvidia 920MX graphics card and 8GB of ram, i am thinking of adding 4 more GB of ram but i want to know how much would that boost my performance specially for games like Apex Legends (which now runs with medium graphics at 20fps or less and really bad graphics at 40 fps), also i use my laptop for game creation, 3D modeling and most importantly using adobe after effects. any suggestions if i should go ahead and add more ram, or just try to get some money and buy a whole new laptop (it has to be a laptop as am always moving) . thanks in advance :)

    Hello Everyone,

Hope your having a good day :)

My question may be stupid but I just need confirmation :)

When I play Sekiro, the graphics are amazing, but the fans are quiet high and the laptop becomes too hot....is that normal??

    Thanks!

So I have four laptops and I can’t for the life of me get the high end laptop hp omen to get more than 100KB/s no matter what

    Posted: 11 Apr 2019 04:00 PM PDT

The shitty hp 2012 laptop has the best of all speeds 600KB/s when it's in my room or 700KB/s with no one else on WiFi.

The 2004 xp laptop gets 200-350KB/s on WiFi or 350KB/s with no one else.

The 2012 dell latitude 10 st2 gets 400KB/s on average so far. I haven't had enough time to average it out.

And then the brand new hp omen gaming laptop mid end with ssd/hdd and 16gb ram can't go any higher than 200 at best. The driver should be updated to the latest so I don't know why it doesn't get any more since even the xp laptop can usually get double the speed.

Any one know if the hp Omen 15t line of laptops have shitty WiFi in general or?

Suggestions for art laptop. (maybe programming)

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:17 AM PDT

Yooo guys. So, I only have one laptop and it's a crappy Acer. I wanted to replace it for a while but I really can't decide what to get. Keep in mind my price range is 500-600 dollars. So, I'd want to be able to draw on it. Some illustrations and other stuff. And being able to program would be nice. Now, I've got two questions. First: What kind of laptop should I get? ChromeOS or Windows? Because, I want a laptop that has stylus support and for it to come with a stylus. And second: Which laptop should I get? I'm not sure since I want to try unity which I know can run on Linux and you can go with Linux programs on ChromeOS one way or another. And I want to draw on it. If I have no stylus I can't really draw can I? And Windows has got it all but there are less laptops that have stylus and Windows. Can you suggest something for me please? Thank you.

Rtx 2060 with 32gb ram vs gtx 1070 with 16gb ram

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:30 AM PDT

So i am purchasing a laptop.

    Only to play pubg/movies/internet

The following 2 options have the same spec except the following

(msi gl63 rtx 2060 vs msi gp63 gtx 1070 on newegg)

    Option A: rtx 2060 laptop with 1x16gb ram 1375usd

need to purchase another 16gb ram for dual channel for pubg (compulsory)

which becomes 1375+100=1475 with 32gb ram in total

    Option B: gtx 1070 laptip with 2x 8gb ram 1475usd

so assuming price is the same with different ram size

fps for pubg for these laptops are similar. review says 1070 gives more fps than 2060 but some youtubers give different results on pubg still remains unknown which laptop has better performance but i guess 1070 has slight edge but not big

1070 has quality control issue in newegg reviews, mainly keyboard fan noise display etc

2060 may get better with drivers update for more fps, not sure still

32gb ram seems redundant for pubg as 16 ram is enough??? ram speed is more important i guess?

2060 seems a crazy good deal for 1375

cant decide between the 2, any addtional thoughts or comparison?

Standardize company on a lineup and brand

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:10 AM PDT

The company I work for is on the smaller side and until now computers have been kind of a free-for-all, people buying whatever is the flavor of the day. That is, of course, not great for TCO or even security, so I've been asked to come up with a "standard package" and brand. Better late than never.

So my immediate instinct was that ThinkPad makes sense. I'm not really familiar with management tools for laptops at all, personally, but I hear they're good in corporate settings. So I guess my question is if the ThinkPad lineup be the way to go? And if it is, what series would make sense? I'm not sure I could talk the company into the T series, but that is what I'm thinking would make the most sense. The new T490 in its lowest spec is still pretty decently kitted out with i5 and 8 gigs and an SSD, not crazy expensive, and reportedly they're built like tanks which should help with survivability.

The L series? Cheaper, but is that too cheap? I don't think anyone is a fan of so-so screens and lesser quality and the goal is to find a machine that can work for all levels of worker - slight overkill for some, sufficient for more advanced users.

Dell? Their Latitude lineup has machines in various price ranges. How would they stack up against Lenovo for a fairly "rigid" policy of "you get this, stfu and go work"? Obviously the goal isn't to alienate the entire workforce, but as always there is a price/performance issue to consider.

Also, touch and pens; the company isn't in any artsy business and right now the majority of workers are actually on desktops. I'm inclined to pooh-pooh touch screens entirely. But am I missing some use case for touch that makes it worth it for an office setting?

Need help picking the right panel to upgrade to

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:53 AM PDT

I have an Acer A515-51G with a terrible 1366x768 TN panel (NT156WHM-N42). I want to replace it with a better panel with more colors and a wider viewing angle.

I've looked at a few panels and decided to go with B156HAN01.1 by AOE. Specs: 1920x1080p 60Hz, high color gamut (262K 72% CIE1931), 700:1 contrast ratio, 25ms response time.

It's pretty cheap too at $48.

I went to purchase the panel from AliExpress but a seller pointed me in the direction of N156HCE-EN1 by Innolux which costs $95. Specs: 16.7 million colors, 72% (CIE1931), 14/11 (Typ.)(Tr/Td) response time, 700:1 contrast ratio.

The specs page for the Innolux panel under 'Fixation' shows that it's without any and the overall dimensions are 350.66(W)×216.25(H) mm. The specs page for my current panel under 'Mounting' says "Face mounting holes (8 pcs) on up, down slugs" and under 'Outline Dimension' says 359.5(H) × 223.8(V).

Does this mean that the Innolux panel will be smaller for my notebook? The vendor on AliExpress says it's compatible and will work as they have the correct panel with brackets.

    Innolux panel: http://www.panelook.com/N156HCE-EN1_Innolux_15.6_LCM_parameter_30969.html

I bought my laptop on the 2019-04-10. Why the full charge capacity lowered down so much just in a single day? When I charged the laptop for the first time I used a wrong adapter with low amperage. Could it be to have reduced battery capacity?

Art school Student and Gamer Aero 15 vs Razor Blade?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2019 04:31 PM PDT

I am currently in the market for a new laptop. I am a student, that games frequently, but also content creates using programs like Photoshop and After Effects. I am looking for a laptop that has a really good battery life for school, but can also handle playing games like PUBG, APEX, Division 2. When gaming I will be hooked to an outlet, but while in class I don't always have that option. I am considering the Razor Blade and the Aero 15. I like the size of both laptops. Both seem to have good battery life, and can handle gaming pretty well, but I want to know your thoughts? The idea of having a Gigabyte laptop does intrigue me because the company has been around for so long. Also, the AI idea sounds cool to me.
Thoughts? Which should I look more closely at getting?
