    Laptop power issues....selectively?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:23 AM PDT

I have an MSI GE60 2PE that I purchased almost 5 years ago. We've had a pretty good run, despite my using and abusing it and then some. Recently I had the power port, fan and charger replaced...which seemed great. Before the fan died (which was the most recent fix) everything was working (even though it was quite slow).

After getting it back with the new fan (that was identical in every way [when I examined the two...as a lay person]) I've had strange power problems. If I stress the computer it stops taking power from the adapter and swaps to battery. But then the battery runs down and I don't realise it until I get a low battery/critical battery level (because I'm usually playing The Sims 4).

I never unplugged the computer while I was gaming. It just...stopped taking power and I can't figure out why. This happens when I watch Netflix or have iTunes and Firefox open at the same time. But sometimes the power is fine for days...and then suddenly the problem comes back. It isn't limited to any time of day or activity, it seems to be random.

This is annoying, but I could manage it except for one thing - when I try to use a different plug because my computer refuses to charge from one, it still won't work. I've used 12 different electrical outlets in my flat, from my bedroom, the kitchen, the hallway......but these are the same outlets that power my phone/tablet, refrigerator, microwave, freezer without issue. My laptop takes power from other buildings, if I go to Starbucks or the library...no problem. This just keeps happening in my own home. It doesn't seem to make sense? I don't understand why it won't charge in my home but it will everywhere else?

So far - I've ensured it's not a battery problem because I've taken the battery out and tried to play The Sims and randomly the computer will shut itself off. Sometimes within 5min of loading and sometimes 5hr. The same applies to having a lot of tabs open or trying to update my iCloud library. I've switched it to battery saver, because it wouldn't charge from the plug at all on high performance...but this is still not a permanent fix.

I can't afford to replace it, the laptop repair place encountered the same problem in their shop. They spoke to MSI but as it is so far out of warranty they refused to answer the question. The laptop people don't know how or why it is happening.

I just need my computer to work all the time. I'm a full time student, I have lots of tabs open. This shouldn't somehow make my laptop not like electrical sockets!? Do I need a different charger? I need it fixed ASAP, it's almost finals!

    (thanks)
