Renting a combo modem or buying a separate router?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:59 PM PDT

I am moving from a college dorm to a small apartment and of course internet will no longer be provided like the dorms.

The only internet service company in my area rents out a standard modem or a wireless modem. Now, after researching a little bit, I've noticed many of you recommend a separate modem and router instead.

Renting the standard modem would add an extra $2 for each month and the wireless modem would add an extra $5.

So I was just wondering if you all think it would be worth sticking with the standard modem rental and paying about $60 for a separate router (I was looking at the TP-Link AC1750) or would it be better to just rent out the wireless modem for a little extra?

Any suggestions/opinions would be greatly appreciated. And I do apologize if this is asked a lot, this stuff is fairly new to me!

    Cat6 Attic Run Question

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:22 PM PDT

I recently ran Cat6 through my attic from my switch to an AP which uses POE.
Now, I'm planning on adding 2 additional access points, but I wanted to get this one up and out of the way.

The question I had in regards to running that Cat6, is about having it just laying on top of the blown in insulation.
I'm going to tack it up to the joists with plastic cable clips once I get the other 2 APs in within the next 6 weeks or so, but I stumbled across a discussion where someone mentioned it needed to be buried under the insulation to protect it from heat. I'm not familiar with this, so I thought I'd ask.

    Thanks!

    SSH without sneakernet/email

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:14 PM PDT

I really have two questions here: the first is does anyone know a good SSH tutorial because I seem to be in over my head far too constantly and need to read more.

The more practical question is this:

I have Machine 1 and Machine 2 with users A and B respectively. Both have SSH set up for public key authentication only. I have physical access and root access to both machines. How do I start the initial safe key exchange over the network so I can use the ssh-copy-id to add permanent access?

Right now any attempt to ssh is (rightfully) dropped because neither machine has the other's public key saved. If I "know" that the other machine I'm connecting to is safe (since we're on the same network and can in theory check fingerprints against each other, I should be able to do *something*, I just don't know how.

advice for connecting three houses - PtMP setup?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:58 PM PDT

    Hi,

I am looking to get some advice: I have 3 houses that I want to connect and share internet with (i.e. PtMP, with house A to be the main), but I'm wondering what equipment would be best suited for this scenario. There is clear line of sight between house A and C, and between house B and C (both window to window or exterior mounted or combination), but no "easy" line of sight between A and B. The roof of house A is lower than the houses between A and B, so an elevated pole mount doesn't seem like an ideal solution. Also, there is no stucco chimney at house A either and these are all single-story houses. Or would a setup to bridge the connection between A to C, then C to B work? One other option that I have thought of would be to have a connection between houses A and B setup in the backyard, so the poles wouldn't need to be so high. But this would technically require me to buy an additional CPE, as I would have one set of devices in the front of house A to connect to C, and another pair of devices for A to B, both in the backyard, totaling 4.

    House A:

    Modem (CM1100)

    Router (TBD)

    Switch (24-port Gb TP-Link)

(which outdoor AP/CPE?) Depending on the setup recommended by the community, this can either be mounted inside (window to window, if A to C then C to B), or outside (PtMP, A to B and C, with some creative outdoor mounting so house B can receive signal from house A)

    House B:

    (which CPE?)

Most likely I will need to do an outdoor solution as there is no line of sight between house A and B, unless I link to house C. If that is the case, then I can probably indoor mount and have the signal go through the window of house B and C, easing the logistics of an outdoor mount

    Switch (8-port Gb TP-Link)

    AP (TBD)

    House C:

    (which CPE?)

An outdoor mounted antenna is not as difficult for this house. I am fairly flexible for window to window wireless connections or exterior siding or roof/chimney stucco mount options

    Switch (8-port Gb TP-Link)

    AP (TBD)

Please let me know if I can help clarify anything. I have not purchased any other devices yet. I've looked into TP-Link and Ubiquiti so far.

For TP-Link, I'd probably pick up a router from Costco (C4000), and use the CPE 510 at each house, or the CPE 610 at house A for maximum coverage. And for the AP's in each of the houses, I'd re-purpose a few routers I have laying around.

For Ubiquiti, I'd have to get their whole stack: Universal Security Gateway, Cloud Key, Nanostation 5AC loco at each house (as recommended by their support forum) each connected to a UniFi AC Pro.

Any recommendations/suggestions welcomed! Thank you in advance!

    Help me tell the difference

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 07:54 PM PDT

My old router just died on me this morning, so I'm browsing for new home router (which I haven't done in 5+ years). Needless to say, I'm having a hard time. 1. What's the difference between this (https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-Wireless-App-Enabled-Dual-Band-DIR-866L/dp/B00NCEYGHE/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=dlink+ac1750&qid=1555123028&s=gateway&sr=8-6) And this (https://www.amazon.com/D-Link-AC1750-Gigabit-Wi-Fi-Router/dp/B00PVCZI40/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=dlink+ac1750&qid=1555123028&s=gateway&sr=8-3)

They have the same AC1750 standard (this is what I came up with after browsing for 30 min). Is the presence of external antenna the only difference?

    1. I have a 2 storey house, the router will be on the 2nd level. I have an extender on the 1st level, and the distance between router and extender is about 30 feet. Any router recommendations that's below 100bucks and has range of 40-50 feet?

    2. If I were to use Fiber Optics, do I need to use a "different" kind/model of router? If so, which model?

    That's all, thanks in advance!

    2 TP-Link Omada APs - Specify Which?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:31 PM PDT

Hi. I have a new home with two TP-Link Omada access points (one on each floor). I have them setup with the same wireless SSID so the connection is seamless, but I have two questions:

    1. Is there anything else I have to do in order for them to truly be "seamless" when moving throughout the house?

    2. I did access them from my computer to see what devices were connected to each. The doorbell (main floor) was connected to the basement AP and the Peloton (basement) was connected to the upstairs AP. It seemed like devices were constantly switching back and forth when I would refresh. Is it possible to force them to join the closest one without using two different SSIDs?

    Thanks for your help!

Tedious Networking, just want to play a LAN game

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 06:50 PM PDT

I constantly have issues trying to get a LAN game to work. Should work with a crossover cable - didn't. Got a router, set it up, forwarded all the ports - still doesn't work.

Why is there no plug-and-play LAN options? I am on Windows 8, the other PC is on Windows 7, and everything is set up how it's supposed to be EXCEPT IT JUST DOESN'T WORK. Turned off every firewall, opened the ports, fixed IPs, etc. I always have these issues with networking, I got a brand new router solely for the purpose of LAN gaming and it still doesn't work. I feel like networking should be a lot easier, especially when there is only one thing I want it to do, but it just refuses to do what it's supposed to.

Best location for structured wiring panel/modem/router/NAS

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 06:35 PM PDT

So I'm having a builder build me a new house and part of the deal is the "smart home package" with CAT 6 wiring. I need to choose a central location for this panel, this is where I want to have my "networking closet" with TV cable termination, cable modem, router, WiFi AP, home server/NAS. The house is not very big (1,500sqft) so the space is a little limited.

    I'm considering the following options:

    • Master walk-in closet (lots of room, but concerned about taking up room which could have been used for clothing, it seems you can never have a big enough closet)
    • Linen closet in the hallway (centrally located, small, but everything should still fit)
    • Laundry room (centrally located, this was my top option until recently, is there concern with flooding/humidity?)
    • One of the closets in the other 2 bedrooms
    • Mech room in the garage (is this a good idea? Would be cool in the winter, but I'm concerned it would be too hot in the summer as there's no AC there. This is where the furnace will be)

Don't have a family yet, but planning to, so have to plan around that. If I was on my own I could have put it anywhere.

    Blink Cameras - Outdoors

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:08 PM PDT

Hi redditors, I have an issue I would like some input on.

I would like to place a Blink XT camera a certain distance away from the house. Blink XT cameras, to my understanding, need both a Wi-Fi and a 900MHz signal to the Sync module to work properly. The Wi-Fi signal is very poor outside the home. I think the only signal that needs extended, repeated, or otherwise is the Wi-Fi signal and all else should work well.

Short of spending several hundred dollars on a new Wi-Fi router and with no feasible Ethernet connections to the Wi-Fi router, how do we accomplish this?

    Thanks!

Any recommendations for a plug and play wall mounted 5ghz access point which supports passive poe?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:47 PM PDT

    New home, new network

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 02:14 AM PDT

    Hi

Im buying a brand new 69 sqare-meter apartment. I went to inspect this new appartment some days ago, and found out that i have a "network closet" for the network equipment, this is where the fiber from my ISP terminates. The apartment have cat-cables pulled to 2 different rooms (to the wall not ceiling) from this network closet. So my plan is to buy an Edgerouter SFP+ ( https://www.ui.com/edgemax/edgerouter-x-sfp/) and 2x tp-link EAP225-Wall (https://www.tp-link.com/us/business-networking/ceiling-mount-access-point/eap225-wall/).

Will this setup work? Does anyone have experince with eap225-wall, is the coverange any good? My budget is around 250 eur.

Getting 5 Mbps down when ISP promised 30

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:13 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have had a download speed issue for months with my ISP, they say its not on their end, so I've tried eliminating every issue that could be on my end (but I'm not very knowledgable, I just eliminated all the excess wires and splitter cables etc). It's not consistent, sometimes it's 1Mbps, sometimes it's 35Mbps. More often it's on the lower side, though.

I can't understand, if it's my home network stopping me from getting these internet speeds, why would I be able to reach 35Mbps at all?

    Port forwarding dilemma, need help!

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:23 PM PDT

I recently setup a raspberry pi zero w camera running motion eyeos. It is connected to a Gl.inet travel router with openwrt installed. My intention is to use it to keep an eye on my dogs in a hotel room. Is port forwarding possible without being able to port forward on the hotel's router/network? If not is it possible to openvpn into my network behind the hotel's network?

I have zero experience with port forwarding or vpn servers so feel free to dumb it down.

    Thanks ahead of time!!

EDIT: VNC viewer seems to be working. Thanks everyone who replied...

40-50ft Ethernet to go to other end of room, along baseboard (many tight 90 degree bends along small closet): round or flat cable?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:49 PM PDT

My computer/desk and Ethernet port are on opposite ends of the room. I'd like to run a white Ethernet cable along the baseboard (w/ Command cord clips), which involves following many tight 90 degree turns along a small closet space.

Would it matter for latency/gaming if go with a flat or round cable for those 40ft? Also, would the extra length/slack of a 50ft cable (they're more common and cheaper than 40ft online) cause any issues with latency/performance?

Hiding in my bathtub to lose WiFi signal. Help!

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 10:05 AM PDT

Hello Everyone. I have an interesting question if anyone knows any workarounds or solutions.

In order to receive Wi-Fi coverage throughout the whole house, I set up two connected routers (LAN-to-LAN). I gave both of them the exact same SSID (Wi-Fi network name) with the same password. The reason is so that when going from one part of the house to another (basement-lobby-first floor), the laptop switches routers/channels automatically without me having to log off of the first Wi-Fi and log onto the second.

The only difference between the two Wi-Fi-s is the channels that they are on. One is on channel 1 (its newer and switches automatically), the other is on channel 11. Usually it works perfectly. But not always. Here is the problem:

Sometimes, when moving from one part of the house to another, the laptop, instead of switching to the stronger channel automatically, will keep on trying to connect with the weak channel, and the internet becomes way too slow, and will not even load webpages. I can see the stronger channel with Wi-Fi software, and even when I disconnect the Wi-Fi, it shows the stronger one, but when I reconnect, it usually reconnects back to the weak one.

The first solution is possibly restarting the laptop, but that defeats the purpose of the seamless transition I want if I have to restart the laptop every time I go to the other side of the house.

The second solution I have found is that I will go into a bathroom or a bedroom, place the laptop under the sink, or into the bathtub, or into a deep closet behind a shelf, so that the Laptop will lose what is left of the weak Wi-Fi signal, and will have no choice but to connect with the strong one. It mainly works, but it's not always easy to completely lose a Wi-Fi signal, and again, hiding inside a closet or putting my laptop into a bathtub every time I move inside the house defeats the purpose of a seamless transition.

So, without restarting it or placing it into a bathtub (or making two different SSIDs), is there any way to tell my laptop which Wi-Fi channel to choose when I'm moving from one place to another? I'm fine with manually fixing it every time, as long as it doesn't take me more time than the alternatives (which take around 2 minutes). Thank you for reading :)

    Having high ping network issues

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 12:06 PM PDT

I am a college student living in cheap college apartment with supposedly 200Mbps network speeds shared between 4 roommates. On my desktop I have an Netgear WNDA3100v2 to connect to the AP behind a panel in the main living area. The access point is only about 10-15 feet from my room and for some reason Ethernet is not setup for my apartment complex as I was told my Spectrum. I am a gamer so naturally it bothers me when I get high ping randomly. For about almost 2 weeks now I have been dealing with high ping spikes, I cannot find any thing that would cause extra interference other than the walls. There seems to be barely any network usage on my desktop and I still get high pings even when I am the only one home. Windows tells me the connection quality is fine.

Should I look into getting a better WiFi device such as a another router for a router to router connection? I have heard WiFi extenders are terrible. How should I go about this? Running a Ethernet cable straight from the router in the main living area really isn't a option.

Ping increased a bit in some games?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 03:31 PM PDT

So in two games I play, Star Wars The Old Republic and Lord of the Rings Online, I noticed my ping went up a bit today. I haven't been on the computer since Sunday and the pings were normal (for SWTOR it's usually between 32-39, usually hovering 35-37ms) and LOTRO used to be between 42-50ms but they moved their data center a few weeks ago and my ping went down to between 30-40 as well. Now today in SWTOR my ping won't go lower than 40 and goes between 40-50. And my LOTRO ping is back up to 42-53 as well. This happened in the past for both games for like a day and then went away, but when that happened my pings were at 65-70. I think it was because my ISP, Spectrum, was doing something through the route so I was put on a different path to the game server for a day. But I ran a tracert and the first few hops are good, with the first being 1ms, second 8-9ms, third 10-20ms, and the 4-8ms is between 20-30, then after that the next few hops are 40 or higher, and when it gets to the game server at hop 18 it's at 40-45. Also, hop 10 and 12 like to time out sometimes. So is this on my end? I joined a server in Counter Strike located in Chicago (I'm in NY) and my ping was between 16-20, which is normal for that server from what I remember. So again, is it probably Spectrum's end? Just checked WoW as well and my ping is normal there with home and world being between 30-40.

Can I do anything to improve my internet?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:18 AM PDT

More specifically my download speed. My speed always sits around 1MB/s and has highs of 1.4 and lows of 0.6. I'll be willing to do anything (except move house) if it means getting faster speeds. I bought a new router about 6 months ago, but that didn't seem to improve much (maybe +0.1MB/s at most). I've also tried all the "Improve your internet by 10x speed" YouTube videos but they all seem to focus on stability rather than speed. I use Ethernet where I can. Any tips not many people know, that can improve speeds?

Extender showing 2.4G and 5G networks both of which work fine but router is only 2.4GHz. Which extender network should I connect to?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:15 AM PDT

    Here's the extender I got: Tp-Link RE 200 Wifi N 300Mbps Dual Band AC750 Range Extender https://www.amazon.in/dp/B00KXULGJQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_brnSCbERJ51VA

    Here's my router: https://imgur.com/gallery/bC81oGV

Someone told me that my router is 2.4 GHz only but it's better to get the dual band extender incase I get a 5GHz router in the future so I got this extender.

Now, I've set up my extender and it shows 2 wifi connections, one with a suffix _2.4GEXT and another with a suffix _5GEXT. And connecting to both makes the connection work perfectly fine (atleast I've checked streaming YouTube videos on my phone on both connections so far and no issues).

So does it matter which one I connect to? Is 2.4G better since my router is also 2.4G? Is 5G faster although my router is only 2.4G?

Expanding my cat5 coverage in the house question

    Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:11 AM PDT

Currently I have a modem and router upstairs with a line leaving he router going downstairs to a mesh unit which extends my wireless downstairs. Modem->Router->Mesh.

I wanted to add a few more cat5 connections downstairs in a couple of rooms, is this as simple as adding a switch before the mesh unit to create more cat5 opportunities? Modem->router->switch->mesh ?

I am trying to avoid having to run new cat5 from the upstairs router to the downstairs bedrooms and instead use the existing cat5 going to the mesh unit.
