This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

How is this build for gaming at 144fps?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 01:57 AM PST

I completed my new build just in time... for a record setting snowstorm and still no power since Sunday. Weep for me.

The worst thing is, I'm a teacher and school was cancelled for the week. If only I had power! Here is the build I can stare at in the dark and the cold while I eat cold soup from a can. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VGYcnH

[other] This RGB software stuff is getting ridiculous. i have 4+ programs just for my LED's!

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 03:26 AM PST

    So, i have:

    • NZXT Kraken RGB watercooler
    • ASUS AURA RGB motherboard + LEDstrip all around the setup
    • Philips HUE
    • Steelseries RGB Headset
    • Logitech RGB mouse

    For this i need:

    • NZXT CAM
    • Asus AURA
    • Razer chroma
    • Steelseries engine
    • Logitech gaming software

and the list goes on and on and on. Why is there no way to sync these all together? i see one old forumpost about "colorfull" but nothing ever came from that.

Where is my integration? this is getting bloody infuriating.

What i want to be able to do, is just come into my room, turn on my rig and have all my lights working simultaneously / smoothly. :(

Best 120mm Case fan for under $10

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 12:59 PM PST

The case I'm buying, MasterBox Q300L only has 1 fan in the back, I'm looking for at least one (maybe 2) fan for air intake in the front. Budget is very tight so I'm looking to spend no more than $10 each for extra fans (I'm ok with used too). What are my best options?

$1k~ Gaming Build Ready - Help Wanted

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 01:21 PM PST

Primary use for this build is gaming. Specifically Fortnite, Apex, Overwatch.

After leveraging this awesome sub... here's what I have got finalized while remaining within the $1k range. One thing I am totally unsure of is the MOBO... I basically just picked a random one but I wouldn't mind having integrated wifi/bt...

After watching 2700x build I noticed that like 90% of the builders either use the stock cooler or an AIO.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 07:35 AM PST

And I wonder why. I mean I guess the builders who leave the stock coolers do it because they're on a budget. Also a custom loop probably is overkill for a 2700x. But I'm surprised by the lack of 2700x build with an aftermarket air coolers. Is it because almost the only good enough air cooler for a 2700x are the high-end Noctua? And with a Chromax-Noctua combo you're at price range of decent AIO? I don't know I'm just speculating here.

    R5 2600 vs 2600X

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 09:07 AM PST

    Hi guys!
In my country (the Netherlands) the price difference between the Ryzen 5 2600 and the Ryzen 5 2600X is 35 euros. You probably cant do some overclocking on the 2600 with the wraith stealth, so you need an aftermarket cooler for this. The 2600X comes with the wraith Spire, which can handle some overclocking. What do you think is better for light overclocking for this price difference?

    GPU vs CPU

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 07:28 AM PST

I am currently in the process of finalizing and ordering parts for my new PC build. I am still unsure of whether to go with the i7-8700k or the i5-9600k. I will be primarily gaming and doing light editing.

However, I will be computer programming a fair bit for college on it so I am unsure of upgrading my CPU is worth it.

If I decide to go with the i7-8700k, I will be going with the RTX 2060 GPU. Yet, if I go with a i5-9600k, I will go with the RTX 2070.

Any help would be useful on which GPU's and CPU's I should go with knowing my circumstances.

EDIT: Also, for those who have the RTX 2060 or RTX 2070, what do you think of performance and is it worth the upgrade? I will be using a 144 hz monitor, if that information is needed.

    Hey all,

I bought a PC from someone online and it has run great for the past year or so. I have become more knowledgeable since my time of purchase and I have started to question some things with the PC. I basically started to question things when recently I attempted to play monster hunter world. When I tried to start the game it went to a black screen like normal and then just *poof* PC restarts. No error messages, no crash logs, nothing just a full on reset. It happens with no other games that I play such as PUBG, Overwatch, Battlefield 1, Apex legends, etc. Due to the fact that there is no regular crash report or nothing to indicate on the logical side of things that there was an application error, this seems to be a hardware issue and not software. My question, however, is why only this application if that is the case? My only thought is that it could be a power supply issue due to the nature of the restart, like somehow it isn't getting sufficient power so it just restarts itself. I also wondered if it was an issue with hardware compatibility like maybe the Ryzen series has issues with monster hunter? But when I checked online for that stuff people who reported crash reports didnt get full restarts, just application crashes and freezes. In my case, it jumps straight to a restart almost immediately after starting the game. This is a problem obviously so I had 2 major questions:

    1. My PC is plugged into a surge protector. Could this possibly be the reason for it not receiving enough power if that is indeed the problem at hand?
    2. When I purchased this PC from the guy online (it was a facebook purchase btw which in hindsight was not the best decision) he gave me the PC and started to turn to leave and I said "Uh wheres the powerchord?" and he said "oh you need one?" and obviously yes I need a power chord, so he turns and digs out from the back of his car a random power chord for the PC. At the time I didnt really even think that this could be a problem but now I am starting to wonder if it could be? If it is, how can I tell what power chord my PSU really needs?

Appreciate you taking the time to read this, sorry it was so lengthy!

PC restarting while gaming, out of ideas, need help.

I apologize for the repost, but my original post was way too early to get any attention and I would really like to figure this out.

PC Crashes no matter what game I am playing. Used to only happen in Elder Scrolls Online, now it occurs in Killing Floor 2, My Time At Portia, and Hand of Fate 2 (all I have installed atm)

I can only play for 25-60 minutes before I get a restart without any warning. It boots as normal to windows as if I had just hit the reset button. No error messages. No blue screens. No overheating that I can tell..

    Did a system clean (wipe)

GPU temperatures never exceed 70 celsius

CPU temperatures never exceed 52 celsius

Passed a mem test through windows 10

    Upgraded PSU to 850w

Disconnected reset and power switch cords from my mobo

Disabled windows 10 restart on system failure

Checked that my 2 GPU fans and 3 case fans are all functioning and very clean

Reapplied thermal paste in last 6 months

Uninstalled and clean installed my GPU drivers, they are up to date

Windows is completely up to date

Everything I am running (os & steam/game) is on my SSD

Few questions about CPU, Motherboard and GPU

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 11:20 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm building a gamingpc through a website that lets you pick the parts, and they'll put it together. Very convenient. However, I'm not sure what the best options are, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm planning to get a nice 4k monitor with this, and I'd like to max out modern games on ultra if possible. So pretty high performance. Few questions though.

    1. My PC is not close enough to an ethernet outlet, so I'll have to connect with WiFi. No problem, I don't do competitive online gaming. If I put in an MSI X299 Tomahawk AC, will that enable the PC to connect to wifi? Or will I need an external adaptor?
    2. What kind of CPU would be good and when is it overkill? I can pick between the Intel® Core™ i7-7800X 3,5GHz , the Intel® Core™ i9-7920X 4,3GHz and the Intel® Core™ i9-7960X 4,2GHz . However, the latter two are outrageously more expensive, and according to most benchmark sites, the i7-7800 can handle pretty much anything. Is that true? And if so, in what situations would you go for the more expensive CPU's?
    3. For the GPU, I can pick the RTX 2070 8GB, the RTX 2080 8 GB, or the RTX 2080 Ti 11 GB. What is advisable? I want to be able to max out games on 4k resolution, but I don't want to spend 50% more money for a 5% performance increase.

And bonus question: what is a good gaming monitor go with this? I prefer graphics over extreme refresh rates (so a nice HDR capable monitor with 60Hz would be preferable to me compared to non HDR 144Hz).

$3k total gaming build, need some advice before I bite the bullet

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 04:06 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yep!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I'm primarily going to use this for gaming, as I've been gaming on a laptop for the past three years. Also going to be used for photo storage/editing, web browsing, general coding, Adobe products, and some 3D modeling. Potentially going to be used for VR and maybe streaming, but I'm still holding off on those.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm looking for 1440p gaming @ 144 fps, high or better. I mainly play Overwatch, CS:GO and Apex Legends, but I do also love playing single player games from time to time, like Witcher 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $3000, including peripherals.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I think the MOBO and storage was giving me the most trouble when deciding parts. From what I'm understanding, M.2 NVMe SSDs are fast, but the difference in speed to the traditional 2.5" SSD isn't that noticeable for gaming. I still chose one because less cables seemed appealing to me and my MOBO choice supports it nicely. But, I'm still new to all this so any critique/advice on my build would really be helpful.
