Microsoft and Steam against Google Stadia. Any thoughts?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:32 PM PDT

With streaming online gaming I wonder what Microsoft will do about it. I would actually like to see a cooperation from Microsoft and Steam to join forces against Google Stadia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeFnQrgtZ9k

Any way to have Win 10 mobile hotspot stay ON all the time?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:29 AM PDT

I have a PC with a wired ethernet connection in my office. I also have a few wifi peripherals such as a VOIP phone and a paper scanner. I have my router up at my front desk and it provides a weak signal in my office, so what I started to do was connect them to my office PC via the mobile hotspot feature, it works really well. My issue is that the hotspot will turn off after a few minutes, it seems random sometimes turning off within less than 5 minutes and other times it stays on for longer periods.

Anyway, is there a way to force the hotspot feature to remain on all the time? I've scoured the settings and searched Google but haven't found a solution. I know I can get a repeater but wanted to avoid extra hardware, and really this should work if it wasn't for the disconnects.

    Windows Update causing Bootloop

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:22 PM PDT

    Hello,

Tech here trying to fix a old computer with an update problem.

I have a really old Dell Optiplex 380 running Windows 7 Ultimate x86 that is used in a medical office. I have been unable to get it to update past three particular windows updates. After installing them, the computer prompts a reboot as normal, but after the splashscreen, I get the 'Please Wait Configuring Windows' screen for a couple seconds, and then just immediately pops back to bios screen and tried booting again. It will do this until I choose to go to safe mode, at which point windows rolls back the updates.

I don't have an old system image of these machines (they were before my time at this company) and wiping them clean is not an option since they have software on them that I do not have an installer for. I have other backups that I've tried restoring to, but they still all fail on the same windows updates:

    KB4489892 - A preview monthly quality rollup

    KB4474419 - Security Update

KB4489878 - Security monthly quality rollup

I've tried the Windows 7 Update Troubleshooter from Microsoft several times. It always finds something, says it's fixed, but the problem then persists after trying to update again. It happens regardless if i do just any one of the updates or all 3 simultaneously. I've even tried taking an image and installing on other hardware to see if that would change anything.

Andy pointers or advice are genuinely appreciated. The company that makes the software on this no longer supports it, so they will not provide an installer. If they would, I would just install on a new machine.

    Edit: spelling.

Built my first PC and I'm a little sketched out by what windows auto named itself. Why did this happen and How do I change this?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 04:58 PM PDT

So I didn't notice this while installing windows but did today installing games from steam. Windows named my PC this

Though it made me laugh at first its really made me sketched out and I just want to know how to change it so my steam account doesn't associate myself with this.

Also very confused why windows would do this on its own. In the past when I've set up computers it usually just named it something like "My PC" or "Home PC" or whatever the name of the admin account was. just any help fixing this would be great.

If I'm not posting in the right sub, I apologize. Please direct me to where I should post and I'll remove the post. Thanks!

How come I cannot type all unicode characters without my keyboard?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:59 PM PDT

Chrome OS has this nice feature where you could hit Ctrl+Shift+U to allow you to type in the unicode (e.g. u00b2) yet I don't know how to do this on Windows.

I know about Alt Codes (e.g. Alt+0021), but when I go into character map it appears that not all unicode characters have alt codes.

Is there some way to just type the unicode instead of the alt code so I could type pretty much all of the unicode characters?

Time won't set itself to automatic.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:49 PM PDT

Every instance of me trying to keep the time automatic leads itself to switch back to manual once I exit out of the settings page. I've tried everything I could think of, but to no avail. For example, I tried the Windows Time service solution, but the service has stopped, and now everything is greyed out. Is there any other way I can fix this permanently?

Any way to remove the UAC Shield Icon from Program Shortcuts?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:27 PM PDT

Any way to remove the UAC Shield Icon from Program Shortcuts?

I never could find a clear answer for this.

What always annoyed me wasn't UAC itself, but how it overlays a security shield on my shortcuts, like here:

Juiced has it because Windows is running it in compatibility mode, and since there is no official 'digital signature', it flags it. For Crysis, its a copy from GOG, which seems to use some workaround with the Windows Command Prompt for the launcher, which causes UAC to activate, even with a digital signature on the .exe file. Other than these 2 games, my game list is clean. It makes it stand out, and its pretty ugly.

I understand why Windows puts it there, and I don't want to disable UAC. I just want a way to remove the icon from my shortcuts, preferably choosing what shortcuts I want this overlay removed from. I know its honestly a minor issue, but its always been a stupid pet peeve for me.

Mysterious bug or a virus? (Windows 10)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:18 AM PDT

I just got two notifications coming from the notification tab that's in the lower right hand corner (next to the time and date). The first one popped up as "Microsoft movies - this test notification" and then 5 minutes later it popped up again as "Microsoft movies - thsi test notification". The typo was there as it popped up. I clicked on it both times and it sent me to the Microsoft News app but nothing showed up other than an error message.

Anyone else experience this? What steps should I take if it's a virus?

Cannot create simple volume from unallocated drive space or use it to extend existing larger partition

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:09 AM PDT

I recently deleted Ubuntu from my PC, leaving only Windows 10. It had a
300 GB partition from a 1 TB hard drive. I tried to use disk management
to create a new simple volume from this space, but it comes up with an
error saying that there is not enough room on the disk. There should be
300 GB of space, and Ubuntu only ever used up around 50 GB of that
partition, so even if Ubuntu was still there, there would still be lots
of space. I cannot extend the 700 GB partition with the unallocated
space because there is a very annoying 513 MB EFI system partition in
between the two, and I get the same "not enough space" error when trying
    to extend.

Mouse/Keyboard stutter is driving me insane

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 06:44 AM PDT

Hey guys. I have this issue on this new work computer which uses Windows 10 where the mouse will stutter (freeze at a certain spot, then continue on like nothing happened) and keyboard will randomly keep pressing down a key for about 1 to 2 seconds before letting me backspace the mess it caused.

I have looked for over a month now and cannot for the life of me find what is causing this. Its random too--I'll reboot sometimes and it will be fixed. Others it continues. Sometimes its worse than others.

I have updated every single driver in the world on this machine and nothing fixes it. All Windows updates completed. Not sure if it's windows as my other Windows 10 based machines do not have this issue. It's a Dell Inspiron 5591. I'm going crazy with this.

Anyone have any idea what could cause that?

    Transferring a windows licence

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:46 AM PDT

Current situation : I'm using a windows 10 license from a windows 7 upgrade. I already had to format / reinstall my system a few times and changed my hard drive once or twice. The problem is that now my motherboard is dying and I have to change it as well as a few other components, EXCLUDING my hard drives.

Q1 - Is the methode that I found online using commands (slmgr.vbs /upk) the appropriate solution for my situation ? I really don't have to switch mother boards multiple times for this manipulation because something went wrong.

Q2 - Assuming that this methode is the best solution for me, should I revoke my key before changing my motherboard or can I replace the components, plug my non formatted hard drives and then do the revoke + reactivate my license ?

Q3 - Since I upgraded my windows 7 to a windows 10 licence, I now have 2 keys. One is still on my computer case (7) while the other one can be found in my control panel / system (10). Which key should I use for the reactivation ?

    Thanks for the help !

Can Windows 7 Home Basic Be turned into Windows 7 Ultimate when factory resetting it?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:58 AM PDT

My girlfriend bought a Windows 7 laptop at a thrift store. She's trying to factory reset it and it'll require a disc and/or a product key. A sticker on it says Windows 7 Home Basic. Does it have to be Home Basic or can I buy the cheaper Windows 7 ultimate instead? Thank you so much.

EDIT* For clarification, she bought a computer stuck on error recovery, that requires a disc to reset. What should I buy for that?@

    Language settings Windows 10 Enterprise

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 02:25 AM PDT

I have a question about the Language settings on Windows 10. I only come here after I've tried literally everything I could thin of. The goal is to have the display language in Dutch, but I could only manage that for 75%.

I set Dutch as default in both Configuration screen and in Settings/language. I downloaded the language pack and applied it.

The only problem I have right now is that the sub-options of the settings-screen are in English rather than Dutch. And I'd like it all to be in English.
