Looking for help transferring over to Linux from Windows 7 and 10

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:56 PM PDT

I'm not sure if anyone has figured out how to do this, but I need to switch over to Linux but the only stumbling block is Adobe Creative Cloud. If I didn't need this software specifically for work, I would be able to run Linux completely without any Windows help.

Has anyone been able to run this on Linux? I've tried to find information about it but there's scant and contradictory information. Is it possible? Since I could get a call at any time from someone needing help, I have to be able to open up any of the programs quickly so I can do my job.

All the other programs I use daily have Linux versions of them. Adobe CC is the only sticking point.

    Any help is appreciated!

How to start PulseAudio at boot/login in Arch with i3wm?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 01:51 PM PDT

As the title, I'm looking for hours but nothing.

The only suggestion I got is to add in i3 config file this line

    exec --no-startup-id i3-msg 'exec /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start'

but it doesn't work as expected, I don't know why. The process starts but pulseaudio itself doesn't work.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance

Complete Linux Beginner looking for a guide

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 02:06 AM PDT

Greetings. Posted this on r/archlinux , but thought it would also fit here.

As the title indicates I'm a complete beginner. My experience peaks at "I used ubuntu once".

Recently I got the opportunity to get a cheap notebook (Lenovo t440s), and thought this would be a great opportunity to finally stop using Windows. So I asked around what distribution to use, and somewhere I read: "If you really want to learn how to use linux you should start with arch - if you got that running you understood enough to actually use it."

Now I've encountered a problem. Since I have no idea what I'm doing and the guides I found require some sort of experience or know-how I'm stuck.

Is there a guide that total newbies could understand? Or should I start with a different distribution thats a little more "beginner friendly"? (I've heard good things about manjaro - maybe that could work?)

TLDR: I have no idea what I'm doing and can't follow guides because I'm to inexperienced stupid.

    Link partition to folder

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 11:20 AM PDT

I know in Windows you can have a folder on your desktop and have it redirect to a particular partition or network share and have it look seamless to the end user.

Can I do this on Ubuntu between a folder on my desktop to a separate partition on the same hard drive?

    Example: pointerfolder1 redirects to sda7

If so how would I do it?

Symbolic for home directory default folders

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 11:09 AM PDT

** Symbolic links for home directory default folders

So I'm often jumping from one distro to another and I'm not sure but I don't think that using the same home directory for many different distros at the same time is a good thing (my guess is probable conflicts with the config and cache files).

So, what about using symbolic links for every "default visible" folder within /home/<username> ? Like, Documents, Downloads, Pictures and all that stuff, excluding everything invisible like .config and .ssh, etc ...

I create a separate "home partition" (Luks etx4) with my stuff on it with the same typical folder stucture (again Documets, Downloads, Pictures bla bla..) and then everytime I install a new distro I can just replace the default folders on my OS home folder by those in my "home partition".

What do you think about that idea?

I just need a solution to easilly migrate/switch between distros without duplicating my documents and stuff.

    thanks yall!

I’m not quite sure if this questions has been asked before, but i am wondering how to switch back and forth between Windows 10 and unbuntu?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 11:00 AM PDT

So I installed Linux correctly I believe. I partitioned some room in my drive and and made sure i didn't delete any of my files from windows 10. After setting up Linux. I go into the BIOS options and I didn't see a choice for my C:/ drive that contains windows 10.

Probably a faulty power supply but not sure

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 08:08 AM PDT

Am I right in the asumption that if linux crashes I get some kind of feedack like a kernel panic? Stacktrace prints and whatnot. Sometimes if I start my pc it simply powers off shortly after I enter my encrypted boot drive password. But now it happened while I was using it so I'm a little worried. After that happens and I boot again it also prints out some lines about cpu microcode so it could also be the cpu but because I normally have a silent boot.

Is there a curated database of excellent Linux apps by category?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 02:18 PM PDT

Like r/AndroidApps has best-of lists sorted effectively: paid and free games, note-taking apps, language-learning apps, etc. That would be useful.

I just want to make my Arctis 7 work with pulseaudio eq and i found this https://github.com/brokkr/pulseaudio_steelseries_arctis_7 but i have no idea how to copy it, or using Github at all. Ubuntu 18.10 Boot Issue

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:02 PM PDT

I am working on a HP Folio 9480m. I initially installed 18.04 but ran into an issue with the updates getting corrupted and didnt have time to learn how use the terminal to remove the corrupted updates so I was going to reinstall but this time I decided on 18.10 but now I cannot get it to directly boot in Ubuntu. I can manually boot into it but u would prefer it to boot directly. I am only using Ubuntu on this system and it previously had Windows 10. I have already tried Grub boot repair and no dice. Not sure what to try from here.

    Linux Mint Crashed Suddenly.

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 07:43 AM PDT

    Laptop-https://www.gigabyte.com/Laptop/AERO-15—i7-7700HQ#kf

    Dual Booted alongside Windows Home

    Distributor ID:LinuxMint

    Description:Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa

    Release:19.1

    Codename:tessa

    Desktop Environment-Cinnamon

Have nvidia graphics card but using intel integrated graphics

I clicked on a recently downloaded video (it was on an ntfs formatted external hdd) to watch it via vlc, it started doing its buffering thing I guess? and my computer crashed. Nothing would work. The mouse turned into the loading sign and stayed in the same spot, not able to move. It was powered on but I was stupid and somehow thought that unplugging and plugging it would do something, but actually plugging it in again didn't even power it.

    Stuff I tried-

    ctrl+alt+F1 (tried with Fn also)

    ctrl+alt+backspace

    ctrl+alt+*

    alt+PrtSc>R>E>I>S>U>B

Stuff that was ongoing when the crash occured-

Two other paused instances of vlc.

Oracle VM VirtualBox running an ubuntu vm

    Firefox with some tabs

A terminal too I think, which I used to run virtualbox

After just powering down via the power button on my laptop and booting again, my fan and overheating problems seemed to have started up again. So, I-

Started tlp again with sudo tlp start which fixed fan issues initially in case it had been impacted by any chance

Switched to nvidia card and back to intel integrated graphics which had fixed battery and heating before.

I think I'll wait and see a bit to decide if there's any real problem here again.

I haven't noticed any kind of data loss or anything yet, so that's good.

So what should I do if such a thing happens again, and is there any kind of log or anything I can analyse now to see why the crash occurred and fix any problem that caused it?

So I want to install Syncthing on my Ubuntu laptop and a bit confused about difference between downloading a tar.gz from the internet or using a repository like Ubuntu Software Center?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 05:00 AM PDT

So I went to Syncthings site, https://syncthing.net/ and it tells me to download a file. I'm assuming the one I should chose is Linux 64 since my laptop is an intel with 64 bit cpu. And then I get a tar.gz file I'm not sure what to do with.

But then I thought, hang on, aren't you supposed to use repositories on Linux, for safety and convenience. So I went to the Ubuntu Software Center on my laptop and Syncthing is available there.

    So what's the difference?

And how do I install a tar.gz? Will that be updated automatically, like something you install from a repository?

    Missing operating system exf

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:30 AM PDT

Hey, so I have problems installing linux on my PC, I made an install of Manjaro a couple of months ago and 2 weeks ago it didn't want to boot again, so I tried reinstalling, the installer always freezes (I've tried installers for other distros like Kubuntu, same problem). So i went fuck it I'll install it on my other PC then plug the drive in, this is what it gives me when I try to boot on it from my main PC (the one that has the problems).

    https://i.redd.it/f4tuuz8rhap21.jpg

I also noticed that something happens when I try to install linux on that PC that doesn't happen on the other, I get a "tocblock database may be corrupt" error a couple of times before it tries to boot the installer.

    Can somebody help me ?

    Changing Themes

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 10:16 AM PDT

(Warning. I am a complete beginner)

Hey guys! I would like to ask a question. I saw these amazing themes at r/unixporn and I have no idea if those themes can work for ubuntu nor linux mint. I'm not even sure if it's called theme or desktop environment. I searched in google and it said that ubuntu supports these desktop environment (KDE Plasma, etc.) while linux mint supports the other ones(Cinnamon, MATE, etc). Can I just choose from any "theme" that I like from r/unixporn and apply it to my ubuntu/linux mint? Would it work?

Create a ARCH USB stick on linux

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 09:59 AM PDT

    I guess I'm really dumb...

I was using "dd" and it look all normal, but each time I'm booting from that usb stick it shows me an option "Windows Boot MDR" and "UEFI: USB BLA BLA". I don't have a CD drive nor anything with Windows on this laptop = that's why I'm so confused. When Arch is trying to mount it tells me that it failed to mount... wtf am I doing wrong?
