Lightweight laptop for school[Programming] and a bit of gaming 800$-1200$

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 09:53 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800$ - 1200$

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1 form is not really needed but is fine to have. Better battery life is better since I would be using it mainly for school and long hours of programming

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would be using the laptop for 5 days a week and carrying it a lot in school so, the lighter the better preferably less than 4 lbs.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Would be using the laptop for mostly windows 10 and sometimes linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Preferably 15" but 13" is fine.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Netbeans, Android Studio, Lots of chrome tabs, and some League of Legends and Dota2

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play at lowest settings and usually 30 fps - 60 fps is fine with me

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? High RAM(at least 16GB), also a minimum of i7 preferably an 8th gen i7 processor, minimum 512SSD or 1TB HDD. Would love to have both HDD and SSD but if not possible I would prefer to have a high capacity SSD. HDMI and USB ports and would love to have the laptop to last several years.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently doing a lot of programming in school and usually use laptop for 12 hours a day. The laptop would also be my primary machine and would love to use it until I graduate and start working.

I have been looking at several Thinkpads, Ideapads, and the LG Gram but I can't really decide which to choose.

Any feedback from you guys would be great!

    Graphic Design Laptop, $800-$2,000 US.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 12:40 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Ideally $800-$2000, but I am flexible in either direction. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd like it to be under 10 lbs, but that's about it.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The bigger the better. At least 15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes yes YES. I regularly use Adobe Creative Cloud (particularly Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, and Acrobat), Clip Studio EX, and I do some recording and streaming through OBS Studio.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I do some PC gaming through Steam, but not much, and most don't have huge system requirements. If the system can handle the creative software well, it should suit my needs here.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? High RAM (at least 16GB), minimum 1TB hard drive, HDMI and USB ports (surprisingly not a given these days). Would like it to last at least several years.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a professional cartoonist and am going to be using this computer for digital art. This will be my primary machine, so I need it to have strong graphic chops and be powerful enough to back it up. My files often end up very big, so extra space is a plus.

My current computer is a 2015 Dell XPS 15, and I'm dissatisfied with my experience. Unless Dell has released a truly exceptional computer recently, I'm more interested in other companies.

I have been looking at the Lenovo ThinkPad P52, but it's pricey and I'm seeing mixed reviews, so I thought I'd ask around. The 32GB RAM and 2+ TB hard drives are tempting, though.

Any feedback you guys could give would be great!

If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or less, * Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Not really as my phone is capable. The rest I can do without, * Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for a quality every day college student laptop(online classes), nice build and long battery life. I watch movies online a lot too. Laptop for 4K Editing ($800 - $2000) [USA]

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 05:00 PM PST

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications. Battery life is secondary as I will most often use it indoors.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, because it's for travel and use away from home.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows only.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches only.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. 4k video editing with Vegas Pro. Fusion (3D). FL Studio.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliability first, then keyboard, then touch-screen (optional).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a main desktop for editing (i7 32gb 1050) but for 2 months each year I travel for work. My current laptop from 2015 (i3 6gb) is ok for basic tasks, but I'd like to be able to edit 4K video away from home. Also I hear Dell will release a new XPS 15 for 2019 this month, so that's also a possibility depending on the prices. I would get the current one but I hear it has some issues.

On the fence on whether or not to buy the fx505,i7 8th gen,gtx 1060(6gb)

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 12:41 AM PST

I'm going to be using it for college work,gaming(twitcher3,apex,etc),light video editing, dual boot, auto cad

So I'm on the fence as to whether or not buy this one asap (plus I'm looking forward for using it for the next 5-6 years hence the specs)

I read that the thermal issues with fx504 had been fixed in fx505 with dual cooling tech and a few other improvements such as thinner bezels

If someone owns this model please suggest on whether or not it's a good model

Need a laptop for CAD/School/Everyday uses

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 04:48 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

Canada, from 0-1600 CAD, Flexible up to 1800 CAD

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I don't need a 2 in 1 computer. I also don't need a good battery life because I am 3/4 of the time plugged on the wall. The money goes toward a power laptop for CAD/gaming.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness aren't really important but I will be carrying this laptop around 4-5 days to school, so the less heavy the better.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

For CAD, I'm using CREO, NX and solidworks and some thermal/structural analysis tools, like FEMAP. I will also be programming in MATLAB, python and C++ (But I think almost all computers can). I'm a casual gamer.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I mainly play Kerbal Space Program, Age of Empire 2 and games like Portal, Subnautica, Skyrim etc. I wish to play smoothly but I dont need to have the best graphics on the market.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and resistant to transportation.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I will use it for 30% CAD, 20% Gaming, 40% Basic stuff like watching movies, youtube, reddit, school, etc. and 10% programming. I've thought of Lenovo think pads, but I don't know if it's a good choice. I don't know a lot about computers so I need the help of experts.

Laptop for photo editing and video streaming(>$1,000)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 10:58 PM PST

Total budget and country of purchase:

    0-$1,000 USD

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Best for the money

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I don't want something that's super heavy but the thinness doesn't matter to me. I'd prefer it to not be huge

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    No preference

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Above 12 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photoshop, Sony Vegas, and basic stuff like Microsoft Word

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I probably won't be using it for games and if I do game on it the games won't be games that require high specs

I likely won't be gaming on it and if I do then I'll be playing games that are light in terms of performance

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality is a must. With how much I'm paying I'd like the thing to last at least 3-4 years

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I want a laptop that's very good at multitasking and also something that has a great screen because a lot of the time I will be watching videos and movies on it. Also the nice picture quality would be good for the little photoshop work and video editing I will be doing. I'd also like something that's a bit future proof because I'd like to have this laptop for 3-5 years and not want the laptop to feel extremely outdated a year from now.

Which of these two laptops is 'better?' Buying from Japan.

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 10:56 PM PST

    • ASUS VivoBook

    https://kakaku.com/item/K0001042169/spec/

    ~$625 USD

    • Acer Aspire E

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075FLBJV7/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

$670 USD with shipping to Japan.

As far as I can tell the biggest difference is that the Asus has a SSD and regular HD while the Acer has a bigger SSD. Also I believe the Asus is slightly slimmer.

    Med School Laptop Request

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 10:41 PM PST

Hello all, I've been using a chromebook + desktop setup for the past couple of years throughout undergrad. It's worked well, but I really need to jump on the 2 in 1 train. My desires for a laptop are: -1080p minimum IPS screen

    -16 gb ram (see below)

    -2 in 1 form factor

    -Stylus support

    -~8 hour battery life

-14 inch screen preferred, but I'm open to other suggestions

    -USB-C support

-Preferred 512 gb storage, but could go less

As I'm having to pay for school, this has to be as cheap as possible. I will be using this to do video and photo editing when I am on the go and am not able to remote into my desktop computer. Additionally, as I said, I am going to be using this for school and thus need a stylus support.

My big challenge is that I am used to 32gb of ram on my desktop, and feel that anything under 16 (esp soldered) is not going to be worth it in a laptop. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

TN screen with 95% NTSC or IPS screen with 60-70% NTSC?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 08:33 PM PST

I need/want color accuracy for creative work, but it's hard to find in a gaming laptop in my price range. Everyone tells me IPS panels have way better image quality & a higher range of colors than TN panels; is this true even when it's a high color accuracy, FHD TN screen being compared to one of similar resolution and lower color accuracy? Rather, is it gonna be worth the extra few hundred bucks it adds to a price tag?

PS — I am not a computer person and I understand very little of what I'm repeating.

Tactile Keyboard/moderate gaming Laptop on the used market (400-500$) US

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 08:31 PM PST

I am an author and require a great tactile keyboard on a laptop. I really like mechanical keyboards and am looking for something like the acer nitro series, but am hoping to purchase on the used market only. The cheaper the better.

-Id love to be able to run borderlands 2 on max at 1920x.

Total budget and country of purchase:

    -$500usd used

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?

-I do not require any specific form factor, as long as I can get a solid 4 hours or so of battery life using text processing for writing such as apache or word.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

-It isn't. I ran with an alienware m11x and enjoy the look and feel of the Nitro series when I see it at stores. so big and thicker frames are fine.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS,

-Windows. However, I do not need an SSD or a copy of windows, I have my own for both.

Do you have a preferred screen size?

-only 15 or 14 inch models

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Photoshop, Sony Vegas. Preferred GPU capable of running borderlands 2 on 1920x res (which isnt too hard to run by todays standards)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-i vsync 60hz so I dont care for absurdly high fps. Handling Borderlands 2 at 60fps would be amazing if possible. But, Im just fine so long as it never dips below 30fps

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)

-Very tactile keyboard. As an author, I want as close to a mechanical keyboard feel as possible. I dislike the flat key experience. Nothing else is required. I dont need certain ports or extras.

Are the Acer Nitro's the best option for me?

    17.3", Non-gaming(No GPU), 1080p, Power Supply <=65W. USD<1000 Only DELL Inspiron 5770?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 07:54 PM PST

Tl;dr: 17.3", Non-gaming (No GPU), 1080p IPS non-touch screen, Power Supply <=65W. Is DELL Inspiron 17-5770 Inspiron 17-5770 my own viable option? Thank you!

    Details below:

    • Total budget
      USD<1000; buying online.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?
I don't mind the weight, but I want good battery life. My case is a bit different. I only carry it to the library every day and I don't have access to a power source. I have two power banks that support Power Delivery and can output 20V/3.5A max. So any laptop that needs a charger with more than >65W won't work for me.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size?
17.3" No touch-screen please, too reflective.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?
Mostly programming in a text editor. I want a bigger screen for more screen estate.

    Thank you!

I'm an android developer, so I create AVDs (virtual devices) in which I allocate cores to, so I need AT LEAST a quad core. Additionally, I'd like for it to be at the very least upgradeable to 16 GB (dual dimm pref) DDR4. Why I'm looking for suggestions is because most laptops that I see include one thing that I don't really need - a high end GPU. I don't need an RTX nor a GTX 1050. I just need a laptop that's atleast quadcore and can be upgradeable to 16GB.

In search of a THIN "On-the-go" POWERHOUSE (PC to replace my 15-inch Macbook Pro which is a joke!)

    Posted: 01 Mar 2019 07:15 PM PST

PRIMARY laptop which stays at home 100% of the time: ASUS ROG Strix / i7 / 512GB SSD / 1TB HDD / 32GB RAM

Searching for a SECONDARY laptop to essentially keep in my backpack which I bring to cafes and do basic business work as well as photo/video editing a few times a month.

Note: Currently I'm using a 15-Inch Macbook pro to bring to bring 'out-and-about.' A long time PC/Windows user, I wanted to test out Mac OS for the first time ever...tested it out for the past year..cannot get used to it at all. Going to sell it and purchase the best Windows laptop you guys recommend!! Appreciate all the suggestions to come :)

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA, no budget.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Great battery life a must, will be using this as my secondary "out and about / put it in a backpack and go work at cafes" laptop (I have an Asus ROG Strix beast of a laptop for home use with all my accessories always connected)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? The thinner the better, would like lightweight and thin to fit in a small backpack - 15 inch screen and as close in thinness/weight as possible to the 15 inch MacBook Pro....just want a PC!
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. WINDOWS!
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch screen TOUCHSCREEN highly preferred!
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Photo and video editing using Photoshop and Premiere Pro (gaming graphics card is not essential, but I assume a gaming card will be more suitable for video editing)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No preference.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touchscreen, reliable build, fingerprint reader would be nice but not essential at all, smooooth touchpad (as close to Macbook pro touchpad as possible)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. To sum it up, I'm simply searching for a THIN & LIGHTWEIGHT, 15-Inch, portable POWERHOUSE for normal browsing and everyday tasks, as well as the once-a-month video edit using Premiere Pro. Touchscreen would be great. No budget whatsoever, looking for the king of kings of thin powerhouse laptops!!
