What is the fuss with the LG Gram

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 12:36 AM PST

Why does everyone keep saying how amazing the (especially 17 inch but also 15 inch) LG gram is - since when has the mass of a laptop been a selling factor? It's a 17 inch laptop with the specs (including battery size) of a 13 inch laptop, it uses U processors and has no dedicated gpu, nothing about it seems appealing

Needing help with choosing a cheap (£200-£300) laptop for my birthday

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 09:31 AM PST

    Hello!

So my partner is looking at getting me a laptop for my birthday, but we don't have a big budget for it (£200-£300). Obviously the more the laptop can do (Sims 4 anyone?), the better, but I know I'm extremely limited with this price range, so I'd basically be using it for browsing the internet, watching Youtube/Netflix, maybe using Office Word, etc. Nice and basic.

So, what's the best we can do with this? I'm not very good with technology, so I could do with your assistance :)

We were thinking about maybe a chromebook, but since there's a few, I feel sort of lost.

My only real want for the laptop is for it to not be bulky and ugly :P Looks wise, I prefer this laptop here (HP Stream 11) over the chromebooks that seemed to be in our price range, but I don't know if that'd be worse than a chromebook?

    Any suggestions/advice are welcome <3

    Edit;

Oh! I also saw this laptop here, the Lenovo 500e, which sounds cool because of the pen - I like drawing and wanted to try out digital art so that sounds like it'd be good for that. But it's a fair bit more expensive, and I'm not overly keen on how the laptop itself looks. I don't know if it's worth it, over other options?

    Thank you in advance :D

Choosing the right tablet/2 in 1 Austria, 600€

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 10:09 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I would like you to help me to chose the right tablet for me. I want to use it for note taking, programming, multimedia. I would like to spent arount 600€ max. I would prefer a light device cause cause i will use it mostly on the go. I already did some researches, here are my findings:

Surface Go 8GB/128GB SSD for around 600€ (with keyboard and pen)

    2 in 1 HP pavilion x360 14-cd1300ng: i3-8145U Dual-Core, 8GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe SSD for 464€ with pen around 500 bucks

Used Surface 4 Pro i5 version used with type cover for 350€ (this device has a small defect with connecting the type cover, however i may be able to repair this as it looks like a SW bug, worst case i have to use a wireless keyboard) the device is 2 years old - so with pen/keyboard it should be around 400-450€

Do you guys think the Surface 4 pro is a good idea to buy. Are there any other good tablets in this price range, which have a decent cpu. What are your experiences with used windows tablets?

    Thanks in advance!

    Summary of the device:

    • Budget: max 600€
    • 2 in 1 or tablet
    • laptop/tablet shoudl be light
    • weight is important
    • windows as OS
    • no gaming
    • must support pens

Best laptops for business and school?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 01:39 PM PST

My 2012 Gateway has finally bit the dust. I can't do anything if I have more than 3 chrome tabs open (yes I'm aware of the how shitty chrome is I just have all my work stuff through google accounts so I can't really use anything else) and the battery lasts maybe 2 hours tops.

So I'm in the works for buying a new laptop. I really like the Razer Blade Stealth in quartz pink (high ram, fast processor, good graphics), but if there's a cheaper alternative available I'd rather take that.

I'm a social media marketer and digital strategist so I need the computer to be able to handle a lot of things running at once. I'm talking 20+ chrome tabs, photoshop with a 4K picture being edited, among other apps. I need this for grad school too so it needs to be a Widows OS, and my max price is $1600 but I'd prefer under $1200. My max screen size is also 15.5 in. and I'd prefer it to be pretty lightweight because I have to travel with it a lot.

Please let me know recommendations! Everything I've looked at that has anywhere near what I want is basically the same price as the Razer, so if they're within a couple $100's near each other I'd rather have a laptop that can game too.

    Thanks!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 01:08 PM PST

So i got this laptop and it comes sith a 144hz display, but for some reason when i check the display settings it says 60hz but it also says intel graphics so im not sure whats going on cause when i play games its clearly using the rtx 2060 but i never used a 144hz monitor so i cant tell if it is or not. It definitely seems fast i just dont know why it says intel and 60hz when i check the advanced display settings.

A question regarding SODIMM Memory RAM.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 12:32 PM PST

A question regarding SODIMM Memory RAM.

So i'm planning on upgrading my laptop's RAM, its a DELL XPS L401X and i understand i can put up to 8 GB DDR3 1333Mhz of RAM.

Right now it has 3 GB installed as pictured below.

    https://i.redd.it/3b22vlx8ryj21.jpg

The question has to do with the chips of the memory, as you can see, the ones installed have 4 chips in the front of them.

While searching options to buy memories, i came along with some models that have 8 chips in the front of the memory, as showed in the picture below.

    https://i.redd.it/gzftkfhtryj21.png

I want to know if using those kind of memories will be compatible as long as they are in between the chipset compatibility (up to 8 GB - DDR3 - 1333Mhz)

    Thanks!

Looking for a Laptop that can run 1 to 2 1440p monitors (~$500-600)

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 11:56 AM PST

    Good Afternoon,

I am looking to get my wife a laptop for her work. She only runs simple desktop and web based applications, never any games or rendering.

She would like to be able to run 1-2 1400p monitors, but could do with a 1080p laptop display and 1 1440p monitor.

While she is not too picky on size, we would prefer not one of those tiny laptops, and not a 30 pound brick...

I really dont know where to start looking at laptops, but we would be open to buying refurbished units.

I am happy to provide any more information, and thank you for any help!

    Needs.

    Under $600

    Runs 1-2 1440p monitors.

    Windows based.

Decent battery life. (it will typically be left on her desk)

    at least 256GB storage

    8GB Ram

Looking for a laptop for video editing and some effects type stuff

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 11:41 AM PST

I'm in the market for a laptop that will be decent for photo/video editing with some After Effects rendering, but I can't stand the look of gaming laptops (closest I can handle is probably the MSI Stealth series). It's tough to get decent specs at a good price that's not a bulky, RGB-fest gaming laptop.

My budget is probably around £1200, and the spec would need to be 16GB RAM and decent dedicated graphics (around GeForce GTX1050@4GB).

The closest I've seen is the Asus Zenbook 15 UX533FD, but it only seems to have 2GB VRAM which I hear can easily get pushed when video editing.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 01:20 AM PST

I have the 144hz rog stric hero 2 with the rtx 2060, and it has a 144hz monitor but when i click on "advance display" settings, it says 6ohz but it also says for intel graphics so does that just mean that its cause im not playing anythin and its running on intel with 60hz? Idk though cause im pretty sure this doesnt have nvidia optimus.

    ASUS FX504GM-EN150T 15.6" Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7-8750H, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD+256GB SSHD

It's refurbished by ASUS themselves according to the listing. Also says it has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 graphics card. This sounds all good to me from my research but I'd like to get some opinions before going for it. Is this worth it? Thanks!

    Dell G3 power adapter is not sufficient (130W) (i5 8300H + 1050 4GB)

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 07:26 AM PST

Hi, I have dell G3 with GTX 1050. It has a annoying issue. When I play a game with high graphics and gpu usage (GTA 5) during charging the battery, the CPU clocks goes down to 800MHZ, to can charge the battery :s

if i use a custom battery config (50-55 %) and i have more battery than that, this does not happen, and the cpu stays on 3.9 ghz, but sometimes it stops charging and uses the battery for 1 second ( the brightness of the screen and the cpu clock goes down again) and in the windows bar show the charger is not plugged in lol (for one or two second randomly ).

if i disable the "BD PROCHOT" with ThrottleStop during charging the battery and gaming specially gta, windows says the charger is plugged in but the battery is now discharging (the clocks stays on 3.9).

i read similar problem in the Dell 7577 (battery discharging during gaming with 130W adapter), this one goes down the cpu clock to can charge the batt.

I have 130w adapter and I think the problem is that 130w adapter is not sufficient to power Dell G3 3579. That issue is not acceptable for customers because It is a gamer notebook. Is dell going to fix that problem? Or my 130W adapter is failing ?

Any alternatives to the Dell G3 ?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 07:05 AM PST

I'm looking for a professional looking laptop that I can reliably game on.

The Dell g3 checks many boxes : it's in my price range (around 900€) and has good specs.

But it also has a very old 2005-like design, and the screen is supposed to be very mediocre. Are there any better alternatives I should be aware of ?

Or, since I won't need this new laptop before a few months, will some higher-end products fall within my price range before August/September ?

    Vertical Screen Lines in Laptop

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 02:34 AM PST

Hi, just when I started my laptop today I saw vertical screen lines in various colors right from the windows 10 bootscreen upto desktop. The lines continued to move up and down for about 3-4 mins and then disappeared by itself and again appeared when I tried to put the system to sleep mode just to see what happens and it came back when I tried to put password on the login screen and it stayed again for sometime and now its gone. It happened a couple of times ago too and I didnt pay much attention.

    Example - https://imgur.com/wuzRbip

Now its clear and I am typing in reddit. What to do?

Laptop specs - Intel 3632QM, 8 gb ram, 4 gb nvidia 750m, 250 gb ssd samsung, win 10. I am already on the latest video and audio drivers.

What to do? I fear it will come again.

    Msi gs65 stealth 8se problems

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 04:24 AM PST

I purchased the new Msi gs65 stealth 8se two days ago and had to return it do to it running incredibly slowly on games such as counter strike and rust. Less than 30 fps on low settings. Additionally the trackpad would freeze up when in game. After returning the laptop and being given a new one, I am still having the same problems. I have made sure I have all up to date drivers and setting are all configured correctly and I do not know what else to do. Can anyone help? Very confused at the moment.

Can I use a lower watt power adapter to charge my Laptop?

    Posted: 02 Mar 2019 08:58 PM PST

Just got a Lenovo Y740 and the laptop charger is massive on an otherwise very portable device. It uses a 230W adapter.

Can I pick up a 65W adapter to charge it or slow down the battery drain when I bring it out? I don't plan to do any gaming or use the dGPU at all outside of home.

    Thanks

    Eluktronics in Canada from Newegg

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 02:00 AM PST

So after a while of digging I finally settle on the Mech 17 but then I realized that it only ships and provide support in the US, but I also notice that Newegg also provide the same model as well on the website, ships from US. So I want to ask if I bought from Newegg, do I have any kind of support? Also if anyone bought it from Newegg as well, do you recommend it?
