    Thicc and Hardy

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:28 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: [USA, 800-1100ish (can save more if it is recommended)]

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. *

[No 2in1.. I'd rather spend the extra $ on build quality and specs./ Battery life doesn't matter because I'm used to my non existent battery in my 6 yr old Gateway]

How important is weight and thinness to you? [as Thicc as it has to be. I do NOT want to skimp on thermals, and if its heavy I'll just get a workout I guess lol, I'm willing to suffice with heavy if I get more for the money that I'm gonna drop in it]

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? N/A.* **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. [gaming mostly, streaming, research. I might one of these days try learning code again, and my wife runs a business and has to move and edit pictures so maybe that too when I'm actually home]

      • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? [WoW, BF1, Overwatch, FFaRR, MTG Arena, Doom, the new Elder Scrolls game when it comes out, MineCraft, And maybe some other AAAs when they come out..]
      • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input [IPS screen 120hz to 144hz 1080p I dont need 4k. Good keyboard, I honestly could care less about the track pad as I seldom will use it. Something reliable and with a strong real human review base. I dont care for brand hype and sponsered. Just something that is WELL worth its weight,(literally) no overheating problems plz, like I said, I like em Thicc.]

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm a truck driver, so I am somewhere new everyday day and lugging around my xbox and TV hot old fast. My laptop is literal trash so I need something worth every penny I spend. This is my first time spending this much on something so I dont want to have buyers remorse. I need it to last a long while before I have to upgrade, and if I need to save a little more then feel free to let me know and lead me in the right direction. I want the absolute best bang for my buck. This is a once in a blue moon/birthday purchase for me. Plz help, I'm in over my head is tech specs! Thank you in advance if you read this far. :)

And P.S. please, PLEASE do nOt reccomend the Acer Predator Helios (I'm out of breath) 300... I DO NOT want to deal with an overheating potentially failing computer.. like I said, I'm a trucker so i cant wait around while my rig is in the shop getting surgery. I do that enough as it is and I have to have something reliable while I wait days on end in a shop in some random state until it gets fixed. It sucks, trust me, and I dont really have the time or space to take it apart and re thermal paste it and liquid metal it myself . I dont want a budget gaming laptop if I can avoid it at all. Thanks

A non-gaming laptop with GTX 1060 and good battery life

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 02:29 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000-1500, in EU.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't want a 2 in 1 form, but I'd like to have good battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not that important, but I still don't like gaming looking laptop, because i may have bring it to school sometimes.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. about 17 inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do want to game on it and i am doing cad for school. I'm happy to play on medium settings.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to play nfs and counter-strike. I would generally like to play recent and upcoming games on medium/high(on overwatch) settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? i'd like a good build quality and backlit keyboard
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically, this laptop is mostly for work, but I do like gaming casually. That's why I want a primarily non-gaming laptop, but it can still play these open-world games on it at medium settings. I would like a good graphics card like GTX 1060 w max-q for this reason, or at least something else which can play the games like I've described. I would also prefer at least 16 GB RAM and 1 TB hard drive space, but if there's a SSD (hybrid) model below $1400 that's the one I'll take.

    I need a 2-in-1 laptop for school

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 02:01 AM PDT

In August i will start attending a new school. They require every student to have a 2-in-1 notebook, as most of the worksheets and exercises will be done electronically.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I don't want to spend more than $1000. I live in Switzerland.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A 2-in-1 form factor is required. Battery life is quite important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It doesn't have to be a super thin notebook, but i'd prefer a lighter one.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. At least 13", at most 15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing resource intensive. Maybe some coding here and there.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I won't be gaming on this.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A touch screen with pen compatibility is needed. Preferably a notebook where a pen is already included. It should at least have 8GB of RAM, but 16GB are preferred.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I don't want a Lenovo notebook, as i don't trust them really.

Probably 15", USA, $1500: Best screen for viewing movies

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:37 PM PDT

I'm looking for the absolute best in picture quality screen for viewing movies by myself in bed. I can't find in depth rankings on screens, like you see with TVs. Budget is around $1500.

Right now, I'm looking at a 2017 15" Macbook Pro and the brand new Thinkpad X1 Carbon with the 14" HDR WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS glossy with Dolby Vision, 500 nits screen. Are the Apple retina screens better overall?

I'll be using headphones, so speakers don't matter. I'll also be using a plug in Blu-Ray drive.

    Lightweight everyday use budget laptop

    Posted: 30 Mar 2019 12:18 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500 - $650 from USA. Will need it for general purpose use, but will be carrying it around often while travelling, so lighter the better.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery and best specs for the money. 2 in 1 is not a preference.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Would be travelling often with the laptop, so lighter the better.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 - 15.6 inch (better if small form factor, good specs for the price is preferred more than screen preference)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD/Video editing or gaming. Maybe some image editing (rarely). General purpose use - Mostly web browsing, using MS office, movies and music. Might occasionally code, but nothing requiring heavy processing power.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen and finger-print reader are not preferences, if they are available in the budget, then cool. If they come at a cost of reduced specs, I'd prefer specs. A better display is preferable. Good keyboard and build quality, definitely needed. Decent I/O ports needed, don't care much for an optical drive.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Sticking to the budget is my priority, and the lighter the laptop the better. Decent specs with good battery life is a plus as will be travelling with the laptop frequently.

    Thanks in advance!

RTX 2060 Gaming Laptop w/ built-in SD Card Reader?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 07:52 PM PDT

I want a gaming laptop that is also content creator friendly as I plan to be making videos, music as well as game a lot. Other than the Gigabyte Aero 15 X9. My budget is 1500-2000 USD. Maybe a clevo and if so where can I build the best clevo (hidevolution seems really sketch but maybe I'm just ignorant). This might just be wishful thinking for RTX but the closer to 1500 dollars the better (tho I'm expecting to pay around 2000).

Total budget and country of purchase: 2000 usd, USA or Canada, depends where I will be this summer.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specifications for the money, good battery life. dont need the 2 in 1 factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? very, as thin and light as possible

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 to 17 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve 15, Adobe Photoshop, FL Studio, Ableton, Bitwig, Steam, GOG Galaxy, Discord

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Everything from AAA graphically demanding games like Metro Exodus, FF15/midrange games like Sonic/ and the like all the way to indies like super meat boy and retro games from the 90s.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I NEED A GOOD BUILD THAT WILL LAST 3-5 YEARS MINIMUM, nothing flimsy that will break easily

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. ALSO A LAPTOP THAT'S RELATIVELY QUIET WHEN GAMING, ANYTHING EXCESSIVELY LOUD IS A BIG NO-NO

    International Warranty Queries

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:05 PM PDT

I'm from India and I want to buy an Alienware 15 R4 which has a few deals in B&H and my friend in US will get it for me as she is coming to India in June.

Is the premium support necessary for international warranty and how will I purchase it when I'm buying the laptop from other vendors such as Best Buy and B&H.

Looking for a light-ish laptop with good build :)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:51 PM PDT

**Total budget and country of purchase:**

around $1150! but if it goes a little over, I might consider it :) Country of purchase will be either Vietnam or Korea!

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Good battery life for being in school all day! Maybe best specifications for the money if that can be included.

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Weight is definitely important (maybe under 1.4 kg until 1.5kg? (under 3-3.4lbs) , not sure about thinness but I think it plays a factor in weight so I guess it's important.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows!

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

14 inches but if there is nothing for it I might consider 13.

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

There's some editing here and there and a few low-power games like Minecraft and Stardew Valley.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

I can't think of any except for Minecraft (because it can't seem to run on my other laptop lol). Maybe at 80-ish FPS at medium settings?

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I'd like an overall great n reliable build quality. My last laptop's bezels and hinge cracked so for this one, I'd like a long lasting good quality build. Also maybe a good quality screen that's not too dim.

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I'd honestly like an i7 but if I can't do anything about it, I'll take an i5. For graphics I would prefer MX150 but I'm cool with Intel HD 620. I was considering the Asus Zenbook 14 UX433 but I've read a lot of reviews of it having a bad build and low battery life with really loud coil whine so yeah. I also thought about the Lenovo Thinkpad T series but I wasn't too sure about it so I guess I'll leave it to you guys! Thank you in advance :))

    Best Specs for money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Light and thing would be nice since I'll be mostly gaming in bed with a controller, but I can handle a hefty laptop

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6" would be ideal, can handle 17.3"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some Video and photo editing, mostly gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

All modern games; currently playing Division 2 and Sekiro. I prefer the max possible framerate, on high and can tone down a couple settings to medium.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good screen since i'll also be watching movies on it as well.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was looking at the Asus G703, GX701, and the GX531. Could I get away with a RTX 2080 Max Q or a RTX 2070 Max Q? I just need something that runs well and looks decent. +100FPS at High/Med settings.

15" Laptop Australia <$2000 AUD - High quality screen for poor eyesight

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 09:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'd be happy to spend up to $2000 AUD. Australia

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I think best specifications for money would be great. Don't need to be 2in1 form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Doesn't need to be super light, but also don't want to lug a brick around!

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I play the odd game of X-com 2 :)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not too stressed about settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is good

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am currently studying, and need a laptop for Web, word processing, Netflix. The biggest factor for me is that I have Multiple Sclerosis and this has caused issues with my eyesight. I've been trying to find a laptop that is nice and clear. I have everything zoomed in, but my current laptop isn't cutting it. Hoping you can point me in the right direction!

Seeking a highly portable laptop that is a joy to type on

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 01:25 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

$1,200 USA (I am a little flexible on this if it makes sense to spend a bit more)

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Best Specifications

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Important, I want to want to carry this around.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

13", can be up to 14"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Light gaming. This isn't a critical requirement, but a desire. I don't do much FPS. Spec demanding games I play would be Civ 5, Northguard, and Divinity.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

If I can play those listed above with enough detail to see what I'm doing, that would be nice. Low settings, or a notch up would be fine.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Keyboard is critical. I am the secretary of a non-profit and will use this for taking minutes. This means I'm typing what folks are saying while they're saying it so speed and accuracy are my primary target. I will also use it to take other notes that you might consider college course notes. Typing comfort is important too. I like the keys and keyboard on the Latitude 5490 provided by my employer. It has 1.9mm travel on a chiclet keyboard. I know I like chiclet, I don't know if the large travel is what makes that keyboard work well or not. I don't like typing on my partner's Gygabyte Aero 14, I miss the e key more than 50% of the time, and other keys as well. It has a metallic mechanical feeling to it. Placement and size of the right shift and the backspace keys are also critical, they must be placed like a standard keyboard and be wide keys. I do use the arrow keys and these should be easy to navigate by touch without hitting other keys in the process. I have long nails.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I have a desktop that I do my gaming and most of my computing on. This will not replace that. It will be a portable device that can be used when I am away from my desk.

While I don't need a 2 in 1, I'm not opposed to one if it functions well as a laptop. This means the Surface tablets are out. I had one, I can't rest it on my lap and type.

Machines I have found and am considering are as follows. Yay/Nay on these, as well as spec suggestions for Yays are appreciated. I'll of course dig into considering anything not listed here as well.

    • Asus ZenBook 13 UX331UA
    • Lenovo Yoga 920
    • Lenovo Yoga C930 (I like this better than the 920 but it's more expensive)
    • Huawei Matebook 13
    • Huawei MateBook X Pro 2018
    • Dell XPS 13 (9380)
    • Razer Blade Stealth (very nervous about this option but I haven't crossed it off my list yet)

I've got my running list with specs and such here if it's of any interest/use: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1D2em_ojdkUp5gOsywjJ_L17gZgsL7eE9f5Npb5nAw3U/edit?usp=sharing

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care about battery life, wherever I go there's a power outlet, it's basically a portable workstation. Best specs for money.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very Important, I like light and thin laptops, I will put it in a bag wherever I go, sometimes has to be put on the ground, lightly tossed around (Daily Commute), etc... Build quality must be excellent.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux exclusively .
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I like 14" or smaller screens.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Spyder for Machine Learning, Docker/Minikube, VSCode for web development.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Occasional gaming, I don't mind no graphics card, but a MX150 would be nice.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Top Notch build quality, Thunderbolt would be nice, but not required, must have atleast 16 GB RAM or 8GB and upgradable. CPU has to be quite good too.

    Thanks for helping!

    Ultrabook for occasional gaming

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 12:28 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $1000-$1500, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Not a 2 in 1 and a good battery would be nice.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

A thin and light laptop is fairly important because I will be walking around with it a lot in college. With that being said anything below 5 lbs would be good.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Anywhere from 13-15ish. Smaller side would be better though.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want be able to do some occasional gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I would play most of my games on my console but I would like to occasionally play with some pc friends or be able to play games not available on my console on a laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Just a solid build to last me through college and a lot of transportation.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Thanks for you time!

Student - Recently bought a Cintiq Pro 24, for 2D animation... But I also like FFXIV.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:59 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

My budget would be around $600-$900 (being in uni is expensive. If there are cheaper options, which I doubt, that would be great!). Country is US.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

The best specifications for the money.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I like light and thin laptops, considering I may take it with me to classes.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Hopefully between 13"-15".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be using Photoshop, Harmony, Adobe Animate (not often, just as long as my professor gives assignments on this program), and FFXIV.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly FFXIV. I want to be able to run it at minimum, medium settings. Though I wouldn't mind a primarily lag-free experience..

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like for it to last a while.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The main thing is that I want it to work well with my Cintiq Pro, since I spent a bit of money on that. I've been using it with my Toshiba Satellite and it's usable even though the resolution isn't the best. The pen lags a bit while using Photoshop and I'm assuming it's because of my current laptop. Basically, I want something that works nicely for as cheap as possible. Thank you!

HELP A TRUCKER OUT PC MASTER RACE! I need a rig for my rig!

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:53 PM PDT

Hello again, I'm reposting another suggestion with different parameters to find the absolute best I can within my price range. I live on the road and have a useless and unplayable laptop. It doesn't have to be flashy or thin. I just want performance, unwavering reliability, and noooo helios 300 plz thanks

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 950~1350 maybe 1500 even 1600 if it's worth it and is on sale at 1200 (Also I am completely okay with returns, as I was going to buy a friends Alienware until he sold it before I was financially stable. Which is okay)* p.s. Amazon links only, I'm gonna put it on my card because they have a no interest deal for 12mo

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No. Battery life doesn't matter, best I can get for the money*

How important is weight and thinness to you? Neither are important. Thin and Light usually costs more, I was about to buy an alienware (not very light) I want performance*

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows 10 *

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. no, I've looked at the alienware 13s and considered it.. 13, 15, 17, it doesn't matter really*

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Heavy gaming, movies and binge watching hulu, research. I live in my truck so this thing will be put to work guaranteed*

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? WOW, BF1, FFARR, OVRWTCH, MTGA, AAAs, MMOs, RPGs, all the fun stuff and at MAX without any worry of throttling, or Overheating*

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? 144hz would be ideal, decent keyboard, strong build quality, reliability, touchpad is obsolete to me, IPS and GOOD thermals.*

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. refurb, new, used, on sale, idc.. as long as it is on Amazon because of the no interest deal that I will be taking advantage of because there is no way in hell I can afford that much in a a couple weeks. My friend that I almost bought the Alienware recommended a ROG rig and I've been told to look at the G5 but I know I get get some amazing deals on sale or used/refurbed so I'm open to anything and want the ABsolute Best I can get while I have this opportunity. Thanks

Student laptop for work and a fair bit of gaming

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 05:05 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase:

Around £500, probably no more than £750. United Kingdom

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I would say Best Specs>Battery Life>2 in 1 form. Specs because I would like to carry out work and other tasks simultaneously and be able to game occasionally as well. And battery life because I'd like to have the option to take it out and about. 2-in-1 doesn't really matter too much.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I would like it to not be too chunky, so I can take it out and about occasionally and make it more easily transportable.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

Windows preferably, the only one I've ever used.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Now this is a big one, I like gaming a lot, so I'd like to have the RAM and graphics to cope with older games, but have the option for newer ones as well. I mainly play RTS games like Age of Empires (and a few others), Football Manager a lot, Rollercoaster Tycoon. Not many demanding games because I leave that for console mainly. The most demanding game I play is probably football manager or Fallout New Vegas

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

All of the above games, and just at a setting where I can appreciate what's going on, not too fussy about high quality.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is a must, cause I've had problems with that before. Would also like good build quality. Would like an HDMI and some USB outputs.

I've gone through a lot of laptops in the last 4 years, my last one lasted me about 3 and I had 2 fail me before that, so I'd like one with minimal difficulties that lasts a while. I feel like I'm probably asking a lot, but I'm not very informed. Thanks anyway

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    $1000 in USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Good battery life, easy to use for filling out online forms (PDFs), reliable

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Want a lightweight, easy to carry around in backpack

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

I've used windows, but have had so many issues with my HP which is only 2 years old. So not opposed to trying Mac.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm interested in trying photo editing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Nope.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable, long lasting (want it for a couple years).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've had an HP pavilion for two years and it SUCKS. The battery gave out within a year of owning it, the warranty sucked. So also looking for tips on where to buy a laptop with a good warranty.

Student Teacher looking for a tablet/laptop able to run smoothly, and also play the occasional computer game. Interested in Microsoft Surface.

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 11:01 AM PDT

Greetings, I am a student teacher in need of a tablet for classroom work. I am pondering the idea of a Microsoft Surface,

    • Total budget and country of purchase: -Around $500-$800, cheaper is much preferred-

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -Not Sure what this means. Best specification for money is preferred I think.-

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? -Not terribly important-

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -Windows. I would prefer a OS that could run the occasional PC game.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      • Not Really
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -It would be nice to have a system that runs Wow-

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -I wouldn't mind playing Wow again, anything else I play wouldn't be much beyond that. No FPS preference-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -nothing here-

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -If I didn't make is clear above, this needs to be a tablet with a Keyboard/mouse option. I am highly interested in getting a Microsoft Surface but I am not sure which generation to purchase. I want the OS the tablet/Laptop runs to be able to run windows based PC games, however the main purpose of this tablet/laptop will be for school use in my student teaching programs. Thank you.

Need a New Laptop for Uni: Screen Size: 12" - 14"; Country: NZ; Budget: $1500NZD

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 04:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm in New Zealand and my total budget is around $1500NZD which is around $1020USD. I am pretty flexible on my budget though.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would prefer a clam-shell type laptop but wouldn't mind a 2 in 1. I really want my laptop to have really good battery life, ie 8+ hours and be light weight, ie less than 1.5kg(3.3lbs).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is quite important, ie less than 1.5kg(3.3lbs) but thinness isn't a big deal but I guess if its light its probably gonna be thin.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm only looking for a Windows laptop.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer a screen size of between 12 inches to 14 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No video editing or gaming, but I will be using it to consume a lot of media, ie Youtube, Twitch, Netflix, VLC, etc. I am also a tab hoarder and my main browser is Google Chrome. I am also doing Computer Science at Uni so I will be having a lot of windows open at one time so obviously would like my laptop to have a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I won't be gaming on this laptop as I have a main PC at home.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like a decent keyboard, possibly touch-screen, SD-Card reader and maybe a finger-print reader or Windows Hello, but these aren't my priority, just bonuses. What is really important to me is a great 1080p screen and at least one USB-A port and obviously a headphone jack. I would also like my laptop to be a muted color without any of the boisterous accents so possibly black or dark blue. Build quality isn't too important for me either.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have only just started looking for a new laptop, and realized how overwhelming it is to find a laptop that suits you because there is soo many options and its impossible to know which one is the best bang for your buck but is also the laptop that best suits your needs. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, Thanks.

    Edit: Fixed weight conversions.

Dell XPS 13 vs. Lenova Yoga C930 vs. HP Spectre?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2019 10:44 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1000, USA. Looking for a good deal around this price range, but willing to pay more for quality
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life, best specifications for money
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? important, looking for something in the Macbook Pro/Air class
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows / Mac
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~13 inches
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. N/A
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard & touchpad, decent display quality
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hi all, I'm hoping to switch over from my older Macbook Pro to a Windows laptop around the $1k price range. I switched from iOS to Android 2 years ago, and I'd like to make a similar switch from Mac to Windows for my day-to-day computer usage. I mostly use my personal laptop for email / web browsing, but I'd like it to be powerful enough to handle running Visual Studio, in case I start coding on a side project. I'm willing to compromise on the display, but I'm searching for a laptop with a solid keyboard, a trackpad that works as well as Mac trackpads, and a thin/light form factor. I have some options lined up, but I'm unfamiliar with Windows machines these days, and I've only read reviews on these online, so I'm hoping to receive some input from this community.

    Options:

    1. Dell XPS 13 9370 ($999) - 4K Touchscreen Display, Intel Core i7-8550U, 8gb RAM / 256gb SSD
    2. Lenovo Yoga C930 ($1080) - 1080p Touchscreen Display, Intel Core i7-8550U, 8gb RAM / 256gb SSD
    3. HP Spectre x360 13 ($1100) - 1080p Touchscreen Display, Intel Core i7-8550U, 16gb RAM / 512gb SSD

    Thoughts:

    • Leaning towards the HP Spectre for the increased RAM and storage, but I hear the trackpad and the display are subpar.
    • Are 8gb RAM / 256 gb SSD good enough for light coding?
    • Is it worth paying more for the latest Intel processors?

    Thanks for the input!
