Built my first PC this weekend and at the moment it feels like a whole load of regretti spaghetti

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 09:08 AM PST

I should preface this by saying half of this is my fault for being a moron.

So I spent about £2300 on PC parts and built the sucker yesterday. First of all it took me like 5 hours to build because the user manuals that come with the parts are utterly useless. I finally finish assembly and go to turn it on and my monitor cant detect any input, 3 hours later (not al spent on troubleshooting) I've re-set the RAM sticks and GPU and finally it works. I now need to install windows...which i needed to download twice because apparently the October version wont create a boot drive on some versions of OSX (I was using my mac to create the boot drive) so I had to download the April version or whatever. So I boot the PC from the USB that has the ISO file on it and everything is going well and I've put in the product key and everything until the very end where it tells me that windows didn't install properly... Great. I try resetting the PC and reinstalling windows but I keep ending up in the same spot. I figure out that a bunch of drivers didnt get installed for some reason including the network driver so the PC has no internet connection. OK, I can download the driver on my laptop and transfer it to the PC. Small problem, the USB is a boot drive and its the only USB I have... thats OK i've got an external HD! I'll just put it on that and transfer it across. Well, here comes my idiocy. Of course my external HD is formatted for mac (unbeknownst to me as I dont know shit about computers) so when I plug it into the PC it doesnt show up. After a bit of googling I find myself in the disk manager and I dont exactly remember what I did but after trying to assign it a drive letter or something I've ended up partitioning it and formatting it... So I've lost everything on the drive but at this stage I havent even realised it yet. I cant get this external HD thing to work so I wipe the USB and use it to transfer the network driver and lo and behold it works. I update the PC and everything is cool but now windows says it isnt activated and it wont accept my product key as 'it has already been used', fan-fucking-tastic. Sometime about now I realise that I've lost all my data on my external HD *cue slight mental breakdown (half because I lost 500GB worth of all my shit and half because of how retarded I am). After I pulled myself together I find some programs that can recover data from fucked up hard drives so I download one and it scans for like 12 hours and confirms that my files are there in some shape or another. problem is it costs a bunch of money to buy the program. I find another program that apparently has good reviews and is much cheaper so I buy that for £20 but this fucking program cant or wont scan my afflicted hard drive. GREAT! So I spend another like £70 on another program that I made sure could detect the files before I bought and I recover the files. But no it cant be that easy can it. It recovers the files all individually so my games library and music library is all just a scattering of audio and image files now.

At this stage if I can reconstruct my music library I'll be happy but its probably going to be a massive pain in the arse. I dont know how im going to sift through all the files to find the documents I really care about. Anyway, I'll probably be spending more money to buy another Win10 key at some point just to rack up more useless costs.

So all up this PC building and setup process has been just one whole cluster fuck for me and I hope its worth it at some point. I just needed to rant a bit and get out my frustrations.

    Ram overclock.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 05:20 AM PST

I recently bought a 4gb stick of ram with 2666mHz speed. But i found out that my other 8gb stick was 2133mHz. It is ram from crucial without a heatsink. Is it a good idea to overclock it to 2666mHz and possibly further?

Building a pc. PC booted and installed windows, then we unhooked everything to put it inside the case. Now it won't boot at all.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 12:34 PM PST

We built it outside the case to ensure that everything worked correctly and it did. We were able to build everything outside and boot to windows, even mess around for a bit. Then we unhooked everything to put it inside the case and build it in there, and that's where we have trouble. Now it won't boot. Everything looks like it's on and working, so it's hard to tell. We've tried checking wires and replugging stuff in to no avail.

    Processor: Ryzen 2600

    RAM: 16gb corsair vengeance

Build Upgrade - $400 budget - Which of these should my son upgrade first?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 12:16 PM PST

My 11-year-old son and I are upgrading his gaming desktop (an old ibuypower originally bought from Goodwill for $100) and he has saved up $400. His original plan was to get an i5 9600k, but his motherboard is too old.

Which upgrade(s) would you suggest first? He will have another $100 in about 2 months, if that makes a difference.

    Current build:

Motherboard: Gigabyte h55m-sv2 lga1156 micro ATX

    CPU: Intel Core i3 550

    GPU: EVGA GT 1030

    RAM: 8MB DDR3 1600

It seems like we can't get both a Mobo and CPU for the budget. He's pretty convinced the the i5 9600k is what he wants.

As an English-teacher/PC-tinkerer hobbyist, I have hit a decision-making wall with this one because it seems as if every upgrade requires something else to be upgraded at the same time. Thanks for all you do, buildapc community.

Is this build good for a freelance designer and casual gamer? First timer!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 06:39 AM PST

    Intended use:

Most of the time, it will be used for heavy design-oriented programs, but I do like to game. As a freelancer, I usually have two or three big programs running at the same time on two screens: Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, Photoshop, Indesign, etc. Concerning gaming, I am obsessed with Cities Skylines and Civ 5. I've also been dabbling in Middle Earth Shadow of War, Mortal Kombat X, DOTA 2 and would like to get into more but haven't yet - think GTA 5. I'm a little naive about gaming performance and obviously, I'm not a top-tier gamer, so it isn't a top priority. My current monitors are both 60Hz at (1) 1040p and (2) 1440p.

    Budget:

Roughly $1000, including the new monitor I just bought. Of course, I want to know if I'm going overboard or under on my setup and anywhere quality and cheaper is better, I am all about it!

    Country:

    Merica!

    Additional details:

I'm a little perplexed whether to go with AMD Ryzen 5 2600x or something like Intel i7 8700. Most of the work programs I use utilize one or two cores, but then again, I have lots of programs open at once and the price of AMD is so much more appealing. On that note, I'm curious whether I should bite the bullet and order the 2600x now as it is at its cheapest price now. Also, I was originally going to get the Fractal Design - Focus G case to save some bucks, but want the NZXT H500 because it's gorgeous. Any thoughts on the case also appreciated.

Last, I'm excited to join this SUPER helpful community and get building. It seems like such a good group!

PC stopped recognizing Display Ports overnight? (1070ti, Windows10, HDMI works fine)

Caution! When upgrading a PC the more you research, the more you spend! (It's usually justified...)

First time PC builder, planned on buying a new GPU & CPU, and $1700+ later I'm waiting on all the parts to build a completely new PC... Here's the specs if anyone is interested, and all components are new except I bought a used GPU off ebay...

GPU: Gigabyte 1080 TI OC (used) CPU: i7-8700k CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 Motherboard: Z390 Pro SSD: Samsung Evo 850 250GB HDD: WD Black 2TB Case: Fractal Design Meshify C

Along with 7 case fans (2x140mm exhausts on top, 3x120mm Intake in front, 1x120mm exhaust on back, and finally 1x120mm exhaust on the bottom)

Lets hope everything works out, waiting for some of the parts still.

Please help me find a PSU, so I can game after 4 months?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 12:27 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

In November last year, my video card, an AMD R9-270 died and went on to pc part heaven. Since then, I have not been part of the PC masterrace as my money was needed elsewhere.

A friend of mine gifted me a new video card (GTX 780) but turns out that my power supply doesn't quite support this monstrous beast. Now I'm looking for a new PSU, and after several months of saving, I think I have enough for a proper PSU. Can you help, please?

I'm currently looking for a PSU that's roughly 70 euros, to make it a bit more complicated, it need to buy it on Amazon (I have 76 euros in gift cards there).

I think I have managed to bring it down to these two PSUs

Some extra info, might this be needed: - I am located in The Netherlands - I basically only have the gift cards, maybe about 20-30 euros extra - the gift cards are earned through some volunteer work. - all of this is researched on an android phone, so my apologies for any bad mistakes and spelling errors

Via outervision, I got these results on power usage:

RX 590 vs. Vega 56 for reasonable 1440p

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 01:53 PM PST

Question regarding possible bottlenecking on planned build

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 12:13 PM PST

Hello BuildaPC, I'm planning on creating my first PC build in the coming months (be nice, I'm new at this :P ) and I have uncertainties regarding if any of the parts will bottleneck the system. The current build plan is:

    • AMD Ryzen 7 1700 3 Ghz 8-Core Processor (£150)
    • Included AMD Heatsync
    • Gigabyte - B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard (£64)
    • Patriot - Viper 4: 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (£91)
    • Kingston - A400 480 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£50)
    • MSI - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB GT OCV1 Video Card (£190)
    • Zalman - T2 Plus MicroATX Mini Tower Case (£35)
    • Corsair - TXM Gold 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£60)

As I said, I'm questioning whether there are any obvious bottlenecks that will prevent the system to perform at it's full potential. I have around £650 to spend, and the current part selection will land me right around that. I opted for decent GPU/CPU/PSU and the rest slightly cheaper parts. Can you give me a more expert opinion on this, I'm really unsure on this type of thing. Thanks again.

Building a cheap everyday PC ~$300

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 03:53 PM PST

This will just be used for email, web browsing, youtube, etc. Needs wifi, no peripherals needed.

Cheaper would be better but $310 should be okay. Just wondering if there's anywhere missing I could save money (considering saving $20 and getting a Rosewill case) or if any of the hardware are more than are really needed. Also don't anticipate needing more than 150 GB storage so the 240 should be fine.

Wanted to get an A320 chipset mobo since they are cheaper, but seems like some would need a BIOS update for the Athlon 200GE and I don't have a CPU available to update BIOS. So, from what I understand any B450 board should work fine.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/b/ZJWD4D

This was my first build and it was stressful but fun. I started with installing the Processor into the motherboard and went in no problem. Next was the CPU fan which is where things got a little more stressful. The thermal paste was pre-applied so i did not have to do that. I sen the fan on the CPU and started to tighten one of the screws. This causes the other side of fan to rise a little bit so i had to apply some pressure to get the other side started. I freaked out a little bit thinking i might of broke something. Next i installed the ram with no problems. Then i installed the i/o shield then the motherboard into the case. Next i plugged in the cables i needed into the psu and put it in the case. Then i installed the ssd. Next i plugged in all the cables into the motherboard. I took of the metal pieces off the case and installed the GPU it went in fine but i forgot to remove the plastic pieces from the ports in the back. I had a hell of a time getting them out but eventually did. I then decide to do a test boot before doing cable management. I plugged in the psu and flipped the switch on and pressed the power button and NOTHING! At this point i am freaking out because i have no idea what is wrong so i just start to check every thing. That is when i noticed a second switch on the psu so i flipped it and tried again this time it booted up and everything was working. Then i shut it down and did all the cable management. Last i flashed the Bios and installed the drivers. Overall i think it went pretty smooth for my first build it took about 5-6 Hours.

What are the odds that a AMD B350 board I buy today will have its BIOS updated to support Raven Ridge?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2019 01:16 PM PST

About six months ago I bought a Gigabyte AB350N motherboard from Newegg and when I got it, turns out my computer wouldn't POST with a Ryzen 2200G installed but lights and fan would turn on. Ruled out RAM errors. Decided that this was one with the older BIOS since 300-series boards need to be updated to Raven Ridge.

But if I were to buy a 300 series board today is it going to be mostly the same thing, or are most 300 series boards better equipped for the more recent AMD chips? They are cheaper than the 400 boards but also still seems like a gamble for those wanting to use a Raven Ridge APU.

Hello, as title states. It's my first PC; I checked that I installed everything correctly, the PC turns on, keyboard lights up, everything internally is running. I also tried connecting to GPU HDMI output, and still non signal. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advance. My part list is below.
