Posted: 25 Feb 2019 08:08 AM PST Hi, many posts here are about "what distro should i choose"? The thing is that I have tried many, many distros. Way back I started with Red Hat, Slackware, Mandrake. Even Gentoo. Then went to SUSE for a long while; after that Ubuntu for many years; back to Red Hat; and recently tried a few others and settled with Debian. But besides Windows, I've also tried other OS's such as BeOS, which was quite something else. The point is I think that whatever distro you choose, it remains Linux. Most are so easy to master, easier than mastering Android as an operating system. So just go with it. [link] [comments] |
Where do I download the latest PHP version? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:27 AM PST I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and just downloaded nginx and got that to work. I now need to download PHP, but can't find how I am supposed to download the latest one. Also, how do you install MariaDB (this is my next step). I apologize if this is an easy/easily google-able question. I can't seem to find a working solution for the latest stable one (7.3.2). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 08:33 AM PST Using dell inspiron 3542 with ElementaryOS 5 (primary and only OS) when I open kdeconnect it shows the icon on the dock for couple of seconds and it goes away nothing else happens. [link] [comments] |
Quick question about Vpn setup in linux with openvpn Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:18 AM PST Just a quick question. I've got nordvpn running through openvpn on Linux mint 19 cinnamon. Occasionally when entering my username ill hit shift instead of enter and get a "no echo" response. I can then log in but I've got no idea what this means. Anyone able to enlighten me? Any additional information that may be useful in regards to network security in such an environment would be useful [link] [comments] |
Windows 7 and Mint 19 Dual Boot on External SSD (Noob Q) Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:31 AM PST Hi, I run windows 10 on my Asus Gl702zc laptop but need to use both Windows 7 and Linux for various things. So I decided to install Windows 7 and Mint on an external SSD so at startup I can just choose which OS to boot from. Thing is i've ever done this before and the only instructional video I;ve found for my BIOS (not actually mine, but the closest) is this is one : will following this tutorial work for what I want or is it for something else? This is my bios - just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction/run me through, or just help me do this =D Thanks so much [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 01:31 PM PST From reading articles and watching Youtube videos, Solus and Budgie is highly praised for a number of reasons. From reading some comments on reddit, I'm getting the impression that the OS and the DE aren't thought as highly. Allegedly, they've slowed down in development and have become stale, that since they don't receive as much updating and aren't as old as some Debian based distrobutions, it wouldn't be as stable. Is there truth to this? Is using Solus, or Budgie, not advised to a beginner Linux user? [link] [comments] |
I'm pretty new to the Linux desktop.. Is there any hope for improving VNC performance? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 12:37 PM PST I've been trying to use Linux more and more. My servers are all Linux and but I've never really used the desktop environment. I've been trying to lately, but VNC is killing me. It's painfully slow. I mainly browse and work remotely, through Apache Guacamole. I have no issues with RDP, it's pretty smooth and there is barely any delay. VNC on the other hand, is just a turtle if there's anything more than a bare desktop and text to display. I am using Ubuntu Desktop 18.04 with the xfce desktop environment. I tried connecting directly through X2Go (to rule out Apache Guacamole) and the connection is actually a bit slower with X2Go.. [link] [comments] |
Mirroring a local network website to the outside Posted: 25 Feb 2019 05:54 AM PST First, let me apologize for my bad English, I have some difficulty to precisely describe what I want to do. I'm currently away from my home for a long period of time and I'm trying to set up Plex/Sonarr on my Synology NAS. But to do so I need to add some new port forwarding rules to my router but I don't have access to my router from outside the local network. I've considered using a VPN thought my pi, but again I can't port forward. All I have access to is my Synology NAS and my PI in SSH or the Apache server I'm hosting with it. Is it possible to "mirror" my router setting page with my pi in a way that I can interact with it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 06:59 AM PST I want to buy a new laptop, since my current one is still from good ol' Intel Pentium days ;) I use the laptop most of the time as office workstation, YouTube/Netflix and occasional gaming (not AAA titles but Simulators like "Prison Architect", "No Oxygen Included", "Kerbal Space Progam" etc). Are Intel's integrated Graphics good enough these days to provide a stutter-free experience? They aren't on my current machine... Or do I have to buy a laptop with a dedicated card (the Nvidia GeForce MX 150, for example)? How is Nvidia's Linux support? I have heard stories about free vs. non-free drivers, but never really cared until now of cvourse ;) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Feb 2019 08:08 PM PST So i have a bash script that acts as the main function for my project. How do i run that script directly from the terminal with a custom command name. I know i can copy the script to /usr/bin/ and that works. But if someone else clones my github repo say, how do i create an install script that would create the command for him? [link] [comments] |
Partitioning for dualbooting Ubuntu/W10 with a shared HDD Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:27 AM PST I have W10 installed on my SSD and I have all my media data (videos, music, documents) on my HDD. I want to share all the HDD contents between both OS. How should I choose the partitioning? I guess root goes on the SSD, but where do I put \home? [link] [comments] |
Global shortcut so AltGr opens Context Menu Posted: 25 Feb 2019 10:01 AM PST I'm looking for a way to remap AltGr, to open Context Menu (basically simulate a right click). I've searched for it but obviously to no avail. Ideally a global shortcut, but only remap AltGr so normal Alt stays as it is. I know this is a noob question, but I'm in the right place I guess. Pls help your friendly neighbourhood gardener. Edit: I'm not sure whether Context Menu is the right term for it. Just to clarify, I'd like to 'right click' the thing that's highlighted, not wherever the mouse pointer is. [link] [comments] |
b43-phy0 error while Installing Lubuntu 18.10 Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:59 AM PST Hello guys, I'm trying to install Lubuntu 18.10 x64 on an old laptop, which currently has Ubuntu 18.10 x64 installed on it, which seems to be over my machine capacity so I want to try a lighter version. But every time I try to install it I get this same error:
I went to the website provided but I still not sure what to do. Any Ideas? [link] [comments] |
Recommend your favorite Ubuntu Shell Extensions Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:50 AM PST I recently discovered that the Ubuntu Software has shell extensions that allow you to personalize your system and add new fancy features. I would like to know which extensions do you, linux experts, use. I will really appreciate all your contributions, please add a brief description on what it does and why do you use them. Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:49 AM PST I'm working on a python script that will get the status of a few particular services and either restart if its failed and send either the up or down status of the service to another python script i use for logging issues. My issue is i don't want to test it on the actual services until i know i have it running correctly so i want to find a service or start one that i can safely play around with. Anyone have any idea? Also is there any way i can purposely put said server into a failed state so that when i run 'service servername status' it returns failed? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:46 AM PST I'm currently running openSUSE Tumbleweed on a virtualbox virtual machine, just to try it out, but the resolution is stuck at 800x600. If anyone could help, I would be really thankful. [link] [comments] |

Exited program once, now it no longer launches Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:25 AM PST Linux Mint 19.1 I had a few transfers running through Nicotine+ this morning, and found some of them had stalled. Sometimes restarting the program can resolve that issue, so I quit and tried to launch it again. Since then, Nicotine+ will not launch. The cursor spins but the program always fails to launch. There is no error message. There have been no system or program updates since the last time I started the application, and it's been running flawlessly for months up until now. I have tried reinstalling the program, and restarting the machine. I have absolutely no idea what has gone wrong or how to go about fixing it. [link] [comments] |
Can I install Ubuntu on a USB stick and boot from a Macbook pro + desktop pv? Posted: 25 Feb 2019 03:18 AM PST I want to get into linux. I both have a desktop with windows 10, plus a laptop (macbook pro 15' with 10.x). The macbook pro isn't really mine, so I don't have the right to install ubuntu and delete mac os on it (other people use it as well). I use Origin + battle net games + steam on my desktop to play games, so I might need to keep windows 10 for that. I thought that maybe making a USB stick with ubuntu on it would be the best way to have my system bootable both from my mac and my desktop. Is that possible, or will I be only able to boot either from on or from the another? I hope I made my post clear enough, really a noob but I love computers, so I thought it was about time I tried Linux for real. [link] [comments] |
