Would undervolting my CPU see much of a performance decrease for music production?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 09:02 AM PST

I'm going to be buying my first actual laptop for primarily music production (and general work) on the go and for college.

Undervolting is pretty appealing for the extra battery life and I was wondering how much of a performance decrease I would see for music production since it isn't really a sustained workload compared to other tasks.

The laptop is a Matebook X Pro for anyone wondering.

Best Laptop for a CS Student?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 01:06 PM PST

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Less than $2000, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Dislike 2in1, battery and performance matter the most.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important. Will be carrying around all day.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Anything but Chrome OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-15in"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Looking to run Visual Studio / XCode for CS major.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming. Have a desktop for that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality. Fast CPU/SSD/HDD. Good & fast input.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Laptop must be atleast 16GB RAM and 256GB of storage at least. Looking at MB Pro & MB Air but not sure about Windows vs Mac. Mildly invested in the "Apple ecosystem" but doesn't matter too much.

Recommendations for a new smaller size laptop?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:25 PM PST

Want to buy myself a new laptop. The one I have is about 6 years old, it's too big and bulky for my liking. I want something small that I can still play Sims 4 on. Not trying to break the bank either. Any recommendations help! Thanks!

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:44 PM PST

Can anybody give me a rundown on the pros and cons of this laptop in comparison to something like the xps 15. Cant decide between the two as theyre both somewhat similar. My use case would be for basic college work, moderate gaming (Overwatch and Earthfall most demanding titles) and web surfing/ YouTube/ Netflix.

Lenovo Flex 5 15" vs HP Spectre x360 15.6" with similar specs

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 12:11 PM PST

Debating between the above 2 laptops, trying to figure out which I should get. Both have 8th gen i7, 16gb ram, 512gb ssd. Flex 5 has geforce 940mx graphics or mx130 graphics (for $780 or $800 respectively). Spectre has geforce mx150 graphics (for $970-1100). Both certified refurbished (amazon for flex 5, ebay for spectre). Which do you think is more worth it? I'm wondering about the battery life comparison between the two and especially reliablity comparison. I'm a College Student in Engineering and will need it to be able to perform well every single day, really don't want to have to try to get stuff fixed, nor do I know how to fix computers. Thanks for any insight!

    Nvidia Optimus on unsupported laptop?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 09:46 AM PST

    Hi,

I have a ROG GL503VM, and it's battery life sucks. A while ago, I read about Nvidia Optimus, and so I wanted to try that, in order to increase my battery life. However, my laptop isn't supported.... Is there a way in which I can still force my laptop to use the integrated graphics, when on battery?

    Thanks!

... Intel i5 with just a small hdd?

I'm just a home user. Don't play games but do stream television using an ip blocker.

Would the i3 still make me happy?

I want to buy my brother a laptop, he spends a lot of time on his current laptop so I want something with good battery life and cooling system. He wants a laptop with a 17" display though, I have tried to convince him to go with a 15" display but he has made up his mind. Our budget is $1000-$1300.

Laptop Not Charging More Than 60%

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 07:25 AM PST

So Asus had this app which would allow me to put my laptop to work only on charger and not deplete the battery...

I downloaded the app a few weeks after using the laptop but didn't change the settings using the app and later uninstalled it. However, my laptop charges up to 60% with no problem but doesn't charge any further. I tried changing this using the app, but it never worked. What can I do?

    Lenovo Ideapad 330.. good idea?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 07:21 AM PST

I'm looking for new laptop for my dad. He has HP Pavilion (I guess), it's at least 7 years old, full, slow and pain in the ass.

    I came across this Lenovo:

    Processor:

    Quad core
    Intel Core i5-8250U (1,6 GHz)
    1600 MHz / 3400 MHz

    RAM:

    8 GB DDR4
    2133 MHz

    Graphics card:

    nVidia Model GeForce MX150 - 2GB

    Storage:

    SSD + HDD 128+1000 GB
    5400 rpm

In my country it costs 798 USD.

He uses it for work (lots of excel documents), downloading movies, tv shows, he has tons of photos. Although he is used to put most of it to his external disks. And he doesn't take it anywhere, it just sits on his desk.
Will he be satisfied or should I look for different options, maybe stay with HP laptops?

Acer Predator 17 laptop speaker begins to buzz and fizz whenever the machine gets hot, suggestions?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 05:59 AM PST

I bought this beauty brand new about two years ago and she has served me well ever since, She is an Acer Predator 17 with no customization hardware wise and software wise she runs windows 10 with no modifications. Yet, about four months ago whenever I booted up a particularly intensive videogame or the laptop got particularly hot, the bottom right speaker would begin to make buzzing sounds, and then crackle like Rice Krispies if left like that for a while. After some experimenting I realized this only happens when the fans are on, so my working theory is that something inside the machine is cracked and the air being blown by the fans is somehow affecting the speaker, blowing up against it somehow, I even took a pin and lightly pressed it to the speaker while the crackling was happening and it did indeed muffle the effects a little.

My Warranty is expired sadly, and I was curious what reddit might have to say on the matter. If anyone knows how to disable said speaker so it wouldn't make the noise, I'd appreciate it, as it would be a sort of fix until I'm able to find a halfway decent repair shop who'll be able to fix this issue. I have little experience with actual PC hardware and software beyond some basic file editing and disabling the opening boot up noise for this laptop.

    Good Working/Multimedia Laptop for ~600€?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 05:25 AM PST

Hey, i am looking to buy me a new laptop, since my HP Workstation with a intel core i 7 3. Gen and an nvidia quadro 2000k is getting old. I already read that the Ryzen 5 2500U with Vega 8 should be able to get all the tasks i do with my laptop done quite well (light video editing, photoshop, light gaming like cs:go, multimedia).

I am currently eyeing up the huawei MateBook D 14" but are there other laptops i should consider?

[HELP)] 1070 vs P1000 (for CAD works)

    Posted: 28 Feb 2019 04:21 AM PST

Hey, im confused as to what to choose between those two. I am planning on buying a laptop for engineering works (most demanding that ill use woukd be SW but just very often). I was eyeing for a Dell 5530 which has a P1000 but its quite expensive. I am now looking for an equivalent GTX (i'll just get atleast 32GB RAM for rendering support) and stuck with MSI GS65 thats way less expensive than dell's. What do you thinks guys.

Why I Regret Buying My MSI GX63VR!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:22 PM PST

I have a MSI GX63VR 7RE with I7-7700HQ, GTX 1070 8GB and 16GB of RAM that I bought about a year ago and been loving it until now, I only recently found out about undervolting my CPU to keep it from reaching 90 C when gaming, it worked but at the cost of fps, but what makes me regret buying it is the fact that an I5 with a GTX 950M 2GB outperforms my laptop in every game, I usually get anything from 30 to 60fps on high or ultra settings but now after seeing posts about the new RTX laptop generation I realized I bought a $1000 laptop that is supposed to get 80-90 fps on ultra settings but it's hardly making 30fps on the lowest settings on Shadow Of The Tomb Raider. I seriously hope formatting it and not installing all that bloatware that comes with it makes a difference, if not I'll have to sell it.

Update: i forgot to say that changing settings from ultra to low dont have any actual change in fps but im pretty sure thats the game overriding them. And also, i dont think the problem is the gpu, im pretty sure its something to do with the cpu or the cooling.
