Windows 10 Desktop Icons Messed Up

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:38 PM PST

So, this has been a problem for the longest time. My Win10 Home simply won't let me have the icon layout I want.

I like dragging my icons around and making "areas" on my Desktop. But there is some kinda glitch that keeps resetting my icon layout to a complete nonsensical mess that appears to be related to the resolution (they form an incoherent mess, but grouped on a big "square" area). In fact, I can right-click the Desktop, click "classify by type" and it'll realign the icons from the mess. But, as soon as explorer.exe is restarted (either by me manually or by restarting the machine), the mess reappears. Also, it's not a different mess, it's the same strange arrangement every time.

So, please, if anyone knows how to fix this, help me!

Do you ever wish we got colour tagging like Mac OS? Why or why not?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:56 PM PST

If you're unaware, since at least System 7 or Mac OS 8, you've been able to tag files or folders with colours. I don't know if they ever had official meanings or if you could change the names (e.g. turn "Red" into "Important"). I was never actually a Mac user, but in my limited time playing with it at the school library, I discovered the feature. As far as I know, they still have it.

Both files and folders can be tagged, and it tints the icon that colour.

I always thought it was neat, but I'm not sure what I'd use it for if we did have it. I know Windows, on a deeper level, has some yes/no tags, like read-only, archive, etc. I wonder how colour tags would work. Could those tags be worked into the file properties? Could actions be taken, such as "show me all green tagged files/folders" or "never delete red tagged files/folders"?

I'm not looking for a third party program to do this. I'd ask that in /r/software. I'm just wondering if fans of Windows are aware of the feature and if it's something you'd want. I think the reasons behind the most common yes/no answers are obvious, but still curious if you feel like explaining.

Teredo Tunneling Adapter completely missing from my PC

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:15 AM PST

Good day and happy new year to everyone

So my problem is that the Teredo Tunneling Adapter is nowhere to be found on my PC and i need it to play certain games online.

It doesn't show in my device manager, even with hidden devices shown and it's not in my legacy hardware selection either.

I have basically tried everything that i could do, including contacting the manufacturer of my PC, who advised me to contact Microsoft support. Which i did immediately, sadly i was just handed around from Microsoft Support to Xbox support and back, i talked to 4 people, neither could help me since they just searched their forum which i had already done at that point.

So my only option left was a complete formatting of my drives and reinstall Windows. I did it today, but Teredo is still unable to qualify, doesn't show in Device Manager neither in the Legacy Hardware selection even after trying out all of the solutions from the support posts and "fixed" problems.

I'm at a complete loss of options and I hope that somebody might be of help.

EDIT: Hamachi has never been on my PC!

    The directory name is invalid

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:59 PM PST

Currently using a windows 7 pc and downloaded some videos I'd like to watch which are a .mkv file. So I downloaded VLC to watch the videos however after setting vlc as the default player for .mkv files, when I open a .mvk file it pops up with the directory name is invalid. I can go to open with and select vlc and it works just fine. Just wondering if there is a way to fix this so I don't have to go to open with and select vlc everytime I want to watch a .mvk file.

Does anyone know how old-style Microsoft sound effects were made?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:54 PM PST

Things from XP, vista, the whole longhorn project, I always found their sound to be really familiar of the early 2000's, and was wanting to make some sound effects that would sound similar to that kind of era. I'm not sure if this is where I should be asking but if anyone knows anything please let me know!

    Changing SSD's

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:18 PM PST

Would changing my boot drive entirely negate that whole activating windows again after a major hardware change? I did my best to find something on it, and I came up short handed. Also, I plan on doing an entire system upgrade: the motherboard, RAM, storage, CPU, and video card eventually. A whole host of issues will be coming my way when this time comes I assume.

Blue and Black screen crashes. It doesn't happen in Safe Mode.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:42 PM PST

It started yesterday while watching a film with VLC. I restarted it, and after 30 minutes it happened again. Since then, I can only use the PC for 3 minutes or so before crashing into a black screen. I am using it in Safe Mode now with a 800x600 resolution, no audio, no antivirus or video codecs.

I tried a CMD function called "verify" for the drivers after reading a post on the Microsoft site. This guy was saying that it's probably caused by a faulty driver. I didn't understand how the verify function worked, but the post explained how to retrieve the dump files...It crashed in a blue screen this time, and kept crashing after every start up, most times black and a some times blue. I think it's the same crash, but the blue screen doesn't always show. The GPU probably crashes before the blue screen can be shown.

I have the dump files but I can't post on the Microsoft site. After I click submit, the button turns whiteish and I can't click it anymore, the page does not reload and the post does not get posted. It might be their problem.

I've had crashes before when using Adobe products and other graphically intensive software. I've kinda solved the problem by using older versions of these programs. Apparently, my Nvidia Quadro 2000 can't handle these applications...and it always crashes in a black screen. I don't know if it's the same crash as the one I am experiencing now.

It's a Dell Precision T3600 and I tried disabling SpeedStep, PowerTurbo and HyperThreading in the BIOS to no avail, it still crashes. I have not downloaded or installed anything these last weeks, and the last thing was Bitdefender Free, which I've had before with no crash whatsoever. I did a system restore in safe mode to an automatic restore point dated 27/12/2018 since the computer was fine 5 days ago, but it crashed again a couple of minutes after starting up. It's very slow during those 3 minutes, and it starts freezing for some seconds before crashing.

Please help!!! I need the computer for work and for pleasure. It's my only source of entertainment, and I really need to start editing a short film for school...

Here's the archive with the latest .dmp files and the dxdiag .txt file: https://we.tl/t-O4nsnneWMA

    Thanks in advance

    How to set separate audio-outputs?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:36 AM PST

I would like to play games while using my headset as game sound and then use my speakers and sub to listen to music. Kinda weird but is there any way to do that? If this is the wrong sub or if it has been answered before, please refer me there.

How to make a harddrive bootable if installed on a secondary harddrive?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:31 PM PST

    Hello friends,

Recently I was installing an M.2 SSD to my hardware after my already old 2.5 SSD's were turning too old for me. I installed a fresh new windows install over my M.2 and then had to surrender ownership of the 2.5's. Unfortunately now my M.2 SSD does not seem to have the necessary information to be bootable from POST (?). Is there any way to make it bootable by using a HIREN's Boot drive to place the neccecary files in the Windows root?

    Happy new year!

Accidentally bought the CD version of Windows, need some help.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:18 PM PST

Hey! I was buying the parts for my first PC, and upon building it I realized my case didn't support an optical drive, and that I had accidentally bought the CD version of Windows. Upon talking to my friend about it, he told me that I could download the installation media from microsoft's website onto the USB, and all that mattered was that I had the activation code, although he wasn't sure. I'd also like to check that is in fact an activation code on the envelope. I'd appreciate if you guys could confirm this. Thanks in advance.

Help transferring mac hard drive to windows

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:05 PM PST

This could be a crazy place to post this... but... here goes.

I used to have a Mac Book. It was an older 2010 Mac book Pro that had an optical drive that I replaced with a SSD. I also had a USB to SATA case and a hard drive there I used for Time Machine backup. All of witch I encrypted with Apple FileVault system or whatever.

Fast forward to this year where I got a big ol' gaming PC aaaaand... the Mac Book died. (looks like dots of corrosion on the motherboard). I now have to figure out how to mount the drives to the Windows machine, un-encrypt them, and the move all the files over. No idea how to start doing this. Google has been useless so far.

P.S. If anyone knows a better place to post this... let me know : )

I can't recover old version of windows on my Dell laptop

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:14 AM PST

I lent my laptop to a family friend a while back, and it seems that he upgraded the version of windows but i'm not sure if its fully le-git, so I would like to recover to the version of windows my laptop originally.

There is no key of windows on the back of my laptop, as a friend suggested. I also did not have an online microsoft account with the windows key linked, unless Dell does that automatically.

    Thanks.

    Windows 7 Genuine Keys

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:04 PM PST

In the process of reviving an old PC, have a key for windows 10 but having issues installing it. I think the issue may be related to the fact I don' t have a genuine version of windows 7. I can' t buy a new key and the ones kicking around online don't seem to work, I deleted the sl file in system 32 and tried the rearm trick in cmd as thus had worked in the past. Any ideas how to get win 10 to install?

Got Chromium as bloatware. I think I deleted it but considering PC cleaning or reinstalling Windows to be sure.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:38 PM PST

A few days ago I downloaded AnyVideoConverter to make myself some Youtube mp3 tracks. Unfortunately, I was careless with the custom installation and some bloatware got added on, including the dreaded Chromium. I deleted every single file related to Chromium, and restarted my PC. When it turned back on, I couldn't find any vestiges of the bloatware or Chromium that I had deleted. It hasn't shown up since nor has my computer done anything odd since then. I ran Avast antivirus and it said my PC was in good health and it couldn't find any malicious files. I'm still nervous vestiges might be left, or even that there might just be junk on my computer from years of messing with modded games or programs I've needed to use. Considering doing a deep clean of my PC or reinstalling the whole thing. Any advice, or am I just being overly paranoid?

    MicroSD Card is write protected

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:12 AM PST

I tried things from changing the WriteProtect key in registry to 0, to using diskpart in cmd and removing read only, it says operation successful, without any effect. Also, I've tried 3 different adapters and many different devices, to no effect. What else can I try? I could read files perfectly fine, but can't write. Also formatting doesn't work since it says the drive is write protected.

Application unresponsive while all others are working perfectly.

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 10:06 PM PST

I have been trying to run this application called stamps.com for a couple of days but it is always unresponsive. All my other applications are working perfectly. Contacted their support they said that it is not anything wrong with the software (I am on the latest version). Just a couple of days ago the application was working perfectly fine but now it does not work at all. Does anyone know what is going on? I have not made any changes that I remember to any of my stuff on the computer (firewall, antimalware, etc). I really need to use this software. Thanks for all the help!

0xc0000098 (Blue Screen of Death) fix without installation software?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2018 08:46 PM PST

My Surface Go that I've had for just a few months suddenly got this error a while ago. Haven't had the chance to fix it until now. Not sure what caused it; I was using it one day, everything seemed fine. I powered it up the next morning and it gave me the error.

I've found a few different articles etc that describe how to fix it, but most of them require you to use a disc or USB drive with the Windows 10 download on it. I don't have something like that on me; I know you can download the files and all, but if there's a way to do it without me going through that trouble and having to get a USB-C adapter to plug into the Surface Go, that would be nice lol

I heard you can go to the 'Recovery Environment' by hard-restarting it by holding the button down a few seconds twice, and the third time it will take you there or whatever. But that hasn't worked either. Any other solutions? Or do I absolutely need that USB installation thing?

    Thanks!
