    Simple Questions - January 29, 2019

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 04:12 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I wish my computer was not working so flawlessly because then I would have an excuse to build or upgrade something

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 04:51 AM PST

I have no excuse to build or buy anything. My computer is:

    • Small (ITX) as I wanted
    • Blazing fast (NVMe and SSD)
    • Silent
    • Overpowered for my UW 1080p60Hz monitor and for the games I play (GTX 1070 can push more frames than my monitor supports)
    • Has 0 bloatware (Running Windows 10 LTSB)
    • Has cloud backups (dropbox ftw)

This post is of course made in jest, but in all seriousness, I wish I had an excuse to build, upgrade or change something. But it's just...perfect. Which sounds like a flex I know, but I seriously sometimes wish I had an excuse to change something and I can't really think of anything. So I come here and live vicariously through the builds of others.

The chase is better than the catch, I suppose.

I wanted to share this for some closure as well as give other people that are like me some insight.

Background: I've been PC gaming for well over 15 years, but had to make do with whatever PC my family had at the time (well over 100 hours in Diablo 3 on a 2011 iMac). Now that I've finished college and have a steady job, I decided it was time to do this for me.

It's easy to see RGB liquid coolers, stupid clean cable management, etc. and think this is how all PCs need to be built. I did.

    Until I actually built one.

Dont ask to see the cable management, there isn't any. I didn't know there was RGB on the motherboard until I booted it up for the first time last night. I'm not proud of my ignorance, but once it came time to build, my priorities straightened out quick: "How good does the fuckin' thing run?"

I blissfully played Quake Champions and Overwatch all night at over 100fps+Freesync and it blew me away. This machine that I built with my two bare hands.

Don't be afraid to be proud of what satisfies you, this is your machine. :)

    rtx 2800 xc ultra

    asus STRIX Z390-F GAMING

So how come it takes so long to boot on a SSD? on my old pc it would take 5-10 seconds

this is with fast startup off in windows 10 + hibernate off.

How would I add an SSD in an already completed build?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:44 AM PST

So I built my PC at the end of 2016 and made the decision to skip out on an SSD in favour of a better GPU. But now I have some free cash I want to finally add one in, however I'm confused as to how to do it as I already have my OS installed to a HDD. What's the best way to go about it?

    Stop Worrying

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:40 PM PST

This mostly goes out to novice builders. I see a lot of posts along the lines of "Is my GPU running too hot?", "Do I need more fans?", "Did I bend the pins on my CPU?", "Is my PSU working?", "Should I RMA X part?". These common questions in my mind all have the same answer (in most cases) that answer being, if it works you are probably okay. There is such a large amount of information floating around about PC building I can see how it is easy to jump to the worst conclusion. In 2019 assembling a PC has never been easier and I think some new builders and even enthusits get caught up in details that just aren't that important. As an example let's just say that your GPU is running a little hotter than average as long as it's in the manufacturers tolerances it's okay. I just hate to see a new builder worrying or stressing out or making the process of selecting parts and building less enjoyable than it is.

Is the ryzen 5 2600 enough for me or should I consider the Ryzen 7 2700 ?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 10:49 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm planning to upgrade my CPU since my i5-4460 is the bottleneck atm (GPU is GTX 1070). I have a dual monitor setup, gaming on the 75Hz and watching Streams/YT/Netflix or browsing on the other 60Hz Monitor (both 1080p). Many people suggested the Ryzen 5 2600, but I'm a bit afraid that it can't keep up with gaming and YouTube at the same time (saw gaming-benchmarks where the usage is ~80-90%).

    My games will be BFV/BF1/Rocket League/StarCraft 2/Forza Horizon 4.

Should I consider to buy a Ryzen 7 2700 instead of the 2600 or is the 2600 good enough?

Also should I spend 20€ more for 3200MHz RAM or will 3000MHz be enough ? I'm not planning to oc anything.

    Thanks in advance!

    PC builds 2016 vs 2019

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:50 AM PST

Back in 2016, on Black Friday I bough my PC parts for my 3rd PC (I keep my PC's for a long time, first one I built I was 6 years old with my dad). For 1000$ back then in 2016 I purchased the following (after discounts and rebates too).

    I7 6700 - 265$ (bclk OC to 4.25ghz)

    16GB 2133mhz Of Corsair Vengeance LPX - 70$

    ASRock z170m extreme 4 - 91$

    Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 8gb - 210$

    3 Corsair ML120 fans - 45$

    Zalman r1 - 30$

    Corsair cx650m - 45$

    Crucial mx300 275gb m. 2 SSD - 77$

    Seagate FireCuda 1tb hybrid drive - 70$

    This comes out to 903$

Not even 3 years later, for exactly 102$ more, you can have this:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y49rQZ

R5 2600 with an RTX 2060, 16gb of RGB ram, a 500gb SSD, a better PSU, a really nice case, and RGB AIO cooler.

This New PC for 11% more delivers about 65% more graphics performance (according to tech power up) and at least 40% more CPU multicore performance and will probably run quieter and cooler. And look better by a long shot.

I have confidence that the future of PC's is bright no mater what Nvidia, Intel, or AMD try to do to us :D.

Also, I have upgraded to a used GTX 1080 and a new monitor of course (so if I bought the 1080 new back in 2016 it would have been a 1500$ ish build).

    TL;DR.

3 years later, for 11% more dollars you get 65% more frames.

    Edit: formatting.

    First PC build

I'm new to PC building and I was wondering if this part list is good or if there is anything I should change. I'm using this primarily for gaming.

I am just about ready to start ordering parts, but I wanted you folks to take one last look over things to make sure everything looks good

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 01:02 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mid-range gaming. Not looking for ultra high on every game, just looking for 60 fps at mid-high settings at 1080p. If it does exceed these expectations, awesome.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Medium to high graphics settings at 1080p. I play a lot of Rust, modded minecraft, rainbow 6, etc.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    A little under $1000

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    PCPartPicker List

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Again, not looking for top of the line gaming. I dont care about the RGB (sorry) or the fancy peripherals. Just looking for smooth 1080p gameplay at high graphics settings.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Are all antennas for PCIe wifi cards the same?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:29 PM PST

I'm building two Hackintoshs and I ordered two of the custom wifi chips off ebay and they work perfectly except they only sent me three antennas instead of the six I need. So I need to buy replacement antennas now and I was wondering if all antennas are the same or if there is something that makes them incompatible. Right now I'm looking at buying 3 from here.

Tests to do on used gpu

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 03:50 PM PST

So I bought a 1080ti used, and it got here and it looks in great condition, it turned on and is registerering 144hz on my gsync monitor. But I want to know some tests I should do on the GPU to make sure it doesn't fail or anything, or that it won't bust down on me while gaming.

Putting together a PC was hoping someone could answer a few questions

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:41 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I was hoping to build a PC shortly and drafted up this list of parts. I've gone over it a few times and believe everything is compatible, I was hoping that one of you might give it a quick once over to see if there are any mistakes or problems. I do have a few questions in about specific parts as well.

Majorly I use my computer for gaming and am building it for that. I do run the small servers (3 to 8 people) for gaming think Killing Floor 2 or Factorio. Typical games I'd be looking to run are: Guild Wars 2, WoW, Starcraft II, Heroes of the Storm, Killing Floor 2, Factorio, Civilization 5/6. In addition I'd like to try games my current unit is unable to run such as Witcher III, Dishonoured II, Dying Light II, and Vermintide II. For the most part I am looking to run games at a resolution of 2560x1440 with high to ultra graphical settings at 60fps or higher.

For budget the lower the price the better of course but I am expecting so spend anywhere from $1,800 to $2,700 CAD.

    So onto the questions:

    • From my understanding the RTX 2060 will be more than capable enough to handle my gaming requirements, would it be worthwhile to pay the extra to go to a RTX 2070? Is ray-tracing going to take off or should I look at a GTX 1070?
    • Similar to my previous question would I be better of with a I5 or an I7? I am usually told that most people don't need an I7 and it is best to stick to an I5, is that true?
    • I've looked over the case dimensions a few times now and I am not 100% sure whether the radiator on the MasterLiquid ML240L will fit. The manufacture shows the radiator as ( 277 x 119.6 x 27mm (10.9 x 4.7 x 1.1") ) and the case as 140mm up to 280mm for the front. Could you double check to make sure I'm not crazy in buying this?
    • This question will probably make me look particularly newbie, what cables should I buy to work with the fully modular power supply?

Thank you everyone who took the time to read the post and answer any of the questions.

    Have a great day!

    Stuck in a bsod loop

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:45 PM PST

    My specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Gn7RxG

I'm currently building a PC, I got all my parts listed and put them together and installed windows 10 using a installation disc. All seemed okay for about an hour (was installing steam, battlenet, LoL) when everything crashed and I got a bsod. I tried to restart but kept getting blue screens while trying to boot. I contact Microsoft support and they suggested trying to reinstall windows. I couldn't do that on the new build (because it was blue screening when booting) so I put my ssd into my old PC along with the installation disc. Removed the partitions, then shutdown. Put the ssd back into the new build and attempted to use the installation disc again. This is where im at now, to my understanding my ssd should be empty, like brand new. I try to boot from disc, it beings loading and then bsod. Wondering if anybody knows what I could be doing wrong and what to do about it. Thank you.

    Upgraded to a new GPU

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 02:35 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I got myself a new GPU (MSI GTX 1060 6GB) and i just started gaming with it today.

    First of my specs:

    I5 6600k @4.2ghz

    GTX 1060 GB OC

    8GB RAM

    Gigabyte Z170

So I immediatly got MSI Afterburner to see what my temps are during gaming. I was mainly playing BF1 and some other games and I noticed that my CPU usage is always at 100 % (even during games like Fortnite), while my GPU usage is at 20-30% and I do not feel any FPS improvement at all. Did I fuck up? Is my CPU too weak for my GPU now? CPU Temps are staying at 42°C-ish. Before the 1060 I had an Asus GTX 960.

    Thanks for all the replys.
