Heads Up. Newegg Promoting AMD Free Games But Not Honoring it Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:23 PM PST I bought a Sapphire 580 last week. It was promoted on the product page as coming with two free games as part of the AMD promotion. After asking about how to get the free games Newegg is telling me I purchased the video card outside of the promotional period. This is despite them advertising the promotion right on the page and AMD stating the promotion doesnt end until Feb 2019. https://www.amd.com/en/gaming/raise-the-game Neweggs email to me after I inquired about how to get the free games. Seems pretty deceptive to advertise something, make the sale and then lie to the customer about the promotional period being expired. I used AMD's support contact form and raised the issue with them. Is there a better way to bypass Newegg and go directly to AMD? [link] [comments]

Want to learn how to build a PC, but my parents are convinced that I can’t learn how to make one. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:19 PM PST My parents and my brother are trying to convince me that I can't build a PC due to my inexperience. I haven't owned my own PC (my brother lets me use his if I want to play something), but I've done research about some specifics when I wanted to buy my own. Additionally, I spent a good part of winter break doing more research about custom building a PC. It's not as though I have zero resources (there's this subreddit and my friends who have built multiple rigs that properly function). There is no rush to make one (I have a year and a half before I have to head off to college), and I have enough time for me to learn about making a PC. They have suggested that I buy a prebuilt and upgrade the parts after the warranty is over, but I know that when that time comes they will tell me to buy a whole new PC instead. One of my friends who has a pretty good rig is willing to teach me how to assemble a PC and how to pick parts, but my family thinks that I need a professional to help me out (My friend's rig actually works well, but I guess that doesn't really matter). They're also convinced that I will spend so much time trying to assemble it and that everything will be outdated once its all put together (pretty sure it doesn't take YEARS to put together a single computer). There are a lot more issues they've found with trying to put together a custom build, and some of them are valid. They think that I think that it's easy to build a PC the first time around, and I know that it isn't. My uncle chimed in on his experience on making two of his own PCs, and he said that it was a pain in the ass. He's not wrong about that, but my family has taken that as a sign that if the handyman of the family had a hard time doing it that no one can do it. If worse comes to worst, I'll have my friend teach me how he assembles his rig and picks parts if he makes a new build. Definitely not ideal, but at least I can get something out of it. I've saved a decent amount of money ($1150), and I'm still waiting for my birthday so that I can get more to put into this potential project. I'm still set on going through with this (hopefully I don't get my ass beat or something). I'm not sure if I can convince my family that I can learn how to do this without having a computer science degree. What arguments can I make to show them that it is possible to build a PC? Fun tidbit: my dad suggested that I learn how to build something easy first, like an IKEA cabinet. Not sure what to make of that. TL;DR: Family thinks that I can't learn how to make a PC and that I need to be a professional or have a professional help me make one. They also think that it's a bad idea because it's hard. What arguments can I make to convince them that this isn't a waste of time and money? Edit: it's not really building a pc, it's assembling parts. thanks u/81dwarves Edit 2: For reference, I'm a junior in high school. Edit 3: My brother talked to me a little bit not too long ago. He suggested getting a laptop if I'm going to make the argument that I want something for college. That's basically the only way I can get my parents to listen to me at this point. It's also the only way I can really get anything out of this. I'm still trying to figure something else out. Thanks for the feedback, guys. Edit 4: I didn't expect to get this much help! I don't think I can take the route of going behind their back though. They'll end up trusting me less, and I can't afford to do that. Even if I do pull it off, they're going to be mad about me sneaking around and lying about stuff to them. [link] [comments]
Broke my MOBO and possibly my CPU, what should I do next? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:44 PM PST Yesterday night, I made probably the dumbest mistake that costed me more than I'd like. When I was switching cases, I removed my Ryzen 7 1700x CPU because I thought I might as well clean and reapply the thermal paste. Thermal paste then slowly leaked onto the pins without my knowledge, and I unknowingly put it back into its socket, the MSI x370 Gaming Pro Carbon, so now there's thermal paste there too. Nothing happens when I press the power button. Here is what my CPU looked like when there was thermal paste on the edges. Here is my MOBO after I had put the CPU back in. I then proceeded to clean the CPU by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and seemingly, I got everything off, although I'm unsure if it still works. Here is what it currently looks like. As for my MOBO, I have tried using a toothbrush, but to no avail. Money is tight and I'm obviously disappointed at myself for making such a mistake. Now I'm asking whats the cheapest and the most effective way to do what I need to do next?

Is g-sync worth it for someone who does not notice screen tearimg? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:39 AM PST I usually get over a 100 frames in 1080p60 and haven't noticed screen tearing. I'm planning on upgrading but am not sure if paying the g-sync premium is worth it for me. [link] [comments]
First build advice. Gaming use with no plan for overclocking Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:08 AM PST First time building a PC and I would appreciate some feedback on my choices, I will try to explain why I choose these but any feedback on any points I mentioned is greatly appreciated, I just brought them up so maybe you can understand my mindset. I will mainly be using it for gaming. A point I would like to mention is that I have no intention to Overclock and highly doubt I will in the future. Finding reviews that do not cater for overclocking was difficult so I would appreciate some advice. CPU: I went with the new intel processor over the 8th gen i5 and i7 and opted for a Z390 motherboard to go with it. CPU Cooler: Honestly this is something that seemed like a popular choice. I went with air cooler over water cooling since since I will not Overclock. Motherboard: This seemed like a really well reviewed board. Not sure if this justifies the price increase over the Gigabyte Z390 UD. Memory: I seem to find alot of good deals on either this or the 3200 C16 model. SSD: Prefered this over the an M2 SSD + HDD since I would prefer everything on an SSD and a larger M2 is still a bit too pricey for what I think I will gain over an SATA SSD. GPU: Went with a 1070ti. This particular model is something I know I can get at a local shop, budget shifts to other parts might make me go for a 1070. Power Supply: Went for a 650w model, mainly between either this (this is the GQ model not sure if it is clear or not) or the G2 which seems to be like a bit more liked but it is a bit more expensive, again I would like to know your thoughts on this. Case: The case is something I need to check local shops for and honestly will decide later on it. Do not see any points I need to mention other than It will definitely be a Mid tower and will try to look for something with dust filters due to the fact that there are multiple cats in the house. Thanks in advance, I hope the formatting is up to regulation. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Is it safe to use parts from a broken PC? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:43 PM PST Hi /r/buildapc, I was wondering if it would be safe to use a graphics card (gtx 1050 ti lp) from a pc that experienced a power surge. I belive that only the CPU and motherboard were affected but I can't be too sure. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:08 PM PST Hey, r/buildapc, What are some CPU choices that are good for AAA gaming, but do not need water-cooling to keep cool? My budget is ~$200. Thanks. [link] [comments]
PC for 670$ - is this compatible? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:29 PM PST I'm building a PC that'll be used for 1080p gaming (most demanding is LoL) and browsing. My budget is 670$. I live in Sweden. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
(Only one RAM stick for easy upgrading later. Storage will be an old 256GB SSD) Is this build compatible and balanced? I'm most worried about the GPU because perhaps the RX580 is more bang for the buck and the GTX 1060 might be good as well. Also this is the first time buying an AMD CPU so I also wonder if the MOBO and RAM are compatible with it. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Looking to update my first gaming PC Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:18 PM PST I built my first gaming PC a year and a half ago and so far, I am loving it. It's a "Entry Level" build, I'm able to stream at a decent quality and some games I can hit highish graphic settings. But I am now looking into upgrading it towards mid-tier gaming. Does anyone have any suggestions of what parts I should swap out? CPU: Athlon X4 860K 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor I'm planning on getting a SSD (Maybe between 250 - 500 GB) so I can use it for my OS and use my 2TB hard drive for my games [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:39 PM PST I've recently upgraded my pc with new case, cpu, mobo, ram, etc, but I've kept my previous graphics card - my gtx 1060 3gb, and whilst it's perfect for 1080p 60fps ultra, I'm perhaps looking to go higher I've spent so long looking at different graphics cards and monitors, and I'm still unsure whether I should go for a 1440p/144hz, with perhaps a 1070ti for around £350 (lowest I could find), or 4K/60fps with perhaps a Vega 64 for around £400 Monitors with free sync tend to be cheaper than a g sync one, but also the Vega 64 can apparently be hot and power hungry. I don't tend to play many competitive games hence why nicer graphics are more appealing than a higher frame rate, but I've yet to actually see what 1440p, 4K or 144hz actually look and feel like Any suggestions or help based on your experience with these resolutions and frame rates would be wonderful! (Technically I don't need help with the physical building of my pc, so if this doesn't fit then I can remove) TL;DR - Looking to upgrade my graphics and monitor, but unsure whether to go for 1440p/144hz or 4K with 60fps [link] [comments]
Re-use Old SSD containing Windows Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:22 AM PST I recently upgraded my rig with a new MOBO which allowed me to install an M.2 SSD as my new boot drive. Everything is running smoothly with no issues, but my old SSD boot drive is just sitting around gathering dust. I want to reuse it in my new system as fast storage for games, but I'm wondering if I should expect to encounter any issues when I reconnect the drive to my MOBO. For reference, my old drive is a Samsung 850 Evo and the only data left on it is my old copy of Windows. I am not interested in salvaging the old OS, I just want to format the drive as if it was brand new. Is it as easy as plugging it in and doing a proper format or are there any weird issues that I might expect to encounter? [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:53 PM PST Build Help/Ready:Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Competitive and RPG gaming primarily with software development uses as well. If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) 1440p Ultrawide, 120hz with G-Sync. I have already purchased a 1080ti, which is the best graphics card within my budget. What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? $2700 In what country are you purchasing your parts? United States of America. Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
Provide any additional details you wish below. I am ready to pull the trigger today, but I am mostly just hoping for a little proof-reading of my parts list to ensure I am not looking at any major incompatibilities between parts. I have done a significant amount of research already as to what parts will fit in this mini ITX case and I understand the limitations involved. CPU Cooler and RAM were chosen based on aesthetic preference. It's very unlikely that I will do any significant overclocking, in fact I am more interested in undervolting this build due to the thermal constraints. An i7-9700 would have been ideal, but if I understand correctly, it hasn't been released yet. NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section. [link] [comments]
Ryzen 2200g or 1200 for ONLY CPU speed? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:46 PM PST So a buyer for a pc I'm building them wants a budget build. I suggested a ryzen 3 1200 and took a look at the price. To my surprise, it was slightly more expensive than the 2200g, the newer CPU. I have already decided to put a rx560 in this system so I would not have a use for the integrated igpu of the 2200g. So all this comes down to is the raw CPU power of both cpus. Since the igpu will be disabled on the 2200g, which CPU would have better performance? I assumed since the 2200g was an APU it might've had to cut back CPU performance to give it better igpu performance but I'm not 100% sure. Will positive air pressure remove dust? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:41 PM PST I'm weighing up whether to buy some extra case fans for a PC in a room with a fairly large dust problem - much as I'd like to move the PC, it's the only room with a wired Ethernet connection. Will extra intake fans remove existing dust? Or will it simply prevent more dust accumulating? Are there any other pros and cons of positive air pressure that I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:02 AM PST So I went from some extreme budget (I'm talking they used a homemade adapter to turn my usb 3 into a usb 2 since the micro atc motherboard inside it had no usb 3 ports kind of budget) pc where I could barely turn it on and open chrome to watch videos, to a very nice, outdated but usable build. We worked on this for a whole day because the case had to be almost torn in half due to a metal shelf for the disk drive and hard drive to sit on. We started tin snipping and drilling out rivets and finally decided to no name power supply would probably burn out my gpu because it was such low quality. In the end all the work for this made it that much better and more memorable of my first actual build. Now I'm running games that I had bought on sale but thought I wouldn't be playing until after college when I had a decent job and could afford a computer. tl;dr Pc was unusable. Two of my friends donated almost every component needed after I went out to buy a $30 power supply. Went from not even watching videos to playing games like siege in one day for $30. Selling an old gaming rig - How do I wipe a RAID 0 SSD array? Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:33 PM PST I'm stating a new build from scratch soon, and I plan on selling my old rig as a complete kit. Part of that kit is two Samsung 840 Pros (256GB each) configured in a RAID 0 array. I've read about the challenges of performing a secure wipe on a single SSD, but what would you suggest in my case? The Samsung Magician software will not recognize either drive since it's a RAID 0 array. BitLocker is not enabled. It has a 2 TB HDD installed too, but I plan on running DBAN on that one. Also, what is the best way to remove my personal Microsoft account from the Windows 10 Pro Key? Or does that matter? [link] [comments]
Need help transitioning my PC to a gaming and editing beast Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:30 PM PST I've never done intense amounts of editing for years so I never really built this PC with that in mind. I'm going to be slowly paying off my interest free finance, for most of it but will buy maybe the processor first. I'm going to be upgrading my dual monitor setup too. I'll have a 1440p 144hz monitor for gaming and a 4k HDR monitor for editing as that's the quality of footage I'm working with. I'm not sure what's needed first, I'm thinking my CPU and was going for the 2700x because I don't have money for the ridiculous i9. Do I need anything more powerful than a GTX 1080?
