Question about linux & privacy. Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:05 AM PST Planning on using Mint. My main priority in switching is for privacy & being able to feel safe. I choose Mint because of how similar it is to Windows. What I want is pretty simple: If I'm connected to the internet, I'm on my desktop & I don't have any applications opened, I don't want my PC to receive, or send, any data anywhere. Currently on Win7 & I use a firewall which is very effective. I plan on using gufw firewall but I read it's not as effective. If I'm not able to do this, I won't switch. If I open my internet browser then i want it to connect online, if I close it I want it to 100% close it. For this to be possible I'll have to remove automatic updates but I don't mind, gonna look for them by myself. Really, I want my PC to act like it's offline if I'm on my desktop. Is this at all possible? [link] [comments] |
Is Manjaro linux good for beginners? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 10:36 AM PST I'm pretty new to Linux. Pretty much have only used different distros for a few days or just on live usb up to now. I want to use Kde so I thought I can go with Manjaro Kde. But I'm not sure if it's a good choice for beginners? Should I just use Kubuntu or Kde neon for now instead? Edit: I just booted up manjaro live usb, and everything keeps flashing wtf?! All other live usbs worked fine. [link] [comments] |

Is Pop OS better polished/smoother than Ubuntu GNOME? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:38 PM PST Long story short, I'm experimenting with Linux right now. I have Linux Mint installed on my laptop, but I want something different, something that can perhaps change or improve my workflow a little, and I've got a spare SSD and a PC to dual boot something. And I've decided to do my best to try GNOME. I know the reputation that it has, I know all the issues that it can have, and I can't really describe it, I just want to try it, I just want to try to make it work. I managed to do just that, to make Ubuntu 18.10 work. Most of my earlier issues and GNOME's horrible performance seem to have been related to the Nvidia drivers - instead of updating them through the Software and Updates program, I manually did it through the terminal and I somehow ended up with a different driver, version 415. I've had Ubuntu installed for two days now, which is a miracle. However, while GNOME works pretty well know (my hardware specs should be more than enough to run it), it does sometimes stutter. Small stutters, and pretty rare now - maybe it is just Nvidia's fault, maybe it's because I am on 18.10 and not on a LTS, or maybe that's just how GNOME is - I personally have no idea. And I've suddenly heard about Pop OS. Built on Ubuntu, using Gnome, and it apparently has an Nvidia variant. I've tried to look around the internet, but as always, there seem to be all kinds of opinions. I know that Pop OS is supposed to be cleaner than normal Ubuntu, but I don't know if there are any differences in performance. Is Pop OS smoother and better adapted for use on machines with Nvidia cards? Or is there no difference at all? [link] [comments] |
Hidden read-only files in my home directory Posted: 29 Jan 2019 05:22 AM PST I've been using Linux for almost a year now, currently Manjaro 18. I've begun to to notice duplicate files cropping up that don't appear in my GUI file browser and are grayed out with tildes appended to them in terminal. When I open them in Emacs or Vim I am told that the files are read-only. So far I've seen these files in a wide range of formats, including .txt, .org, .js, .html, .css, and .odt. What's the deal with these files? Are they some sort of background recovery/autosave feature? [link] [comments] |
Terminal programs are not filling the terminal Posted: 29 Jan 2019 06:35 AM PST Hi! I use i3 and urxvt and recently I've noticed something odd.. I found out that programs like VIM and CMus are not filling the whole terminal window. TBH, I'm not sure if it has been always like that but it's annoying to look at. It's mostly visible in the CMus one. It's hollow from the bottom side and the right side of the terminal. Only visible in fullscreen and this. ^^ Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance. Posted: 29 Jan 2019 05:40 AM PST Until recently IDLE showed up when I searched for it through the Dash/start menu (not sure what this is called in KDE Neon, which is what I'm on), but it doesn't now. I'm trying to troubleshoot the problem and thus have been trying to find my install location for Python3 (since IDLE is installed alongside it), but I haven't been able. Things like Though I can still run [link] [comments] |
pretty desktop on an SBC - hardware acceleration Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:47 AM PST I have a rockpro64 and want to use it in a project that requires a compositor. I'd like to do it all in Wayland rather than X, and don't care if its KDE, GNOME, or XFCE with an outside compositor (because I dislike the built in). I know the hardware is powerful enough to do it smoothly but I haven't been able to configure it properly. KDE, if I get it running at all, is unusably slow with very long fades, and gnome won't launch at all. I had KDE working smoothly on a regular rock64 a while back, though I don't remember how I did it. This is much more powerful so I know this is possible. [link] [comments] |

How do I install Firefox 65.0 in Linux Mint 19? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 10:04 AM PST I tried the Update Manager and Software Manager, but the former says everything is up to date and the latter brings 64.0 as the latest version. I grabbed a .tar.bz2 file from the Firefox webpage and extracted it, but I'm not quite sure what to do with it exactly. I know this is a big noob question, but all my updates have usually been through the above, but the following commands: > sudo apt-get update > sudo apt-get install firefox get me that there are no updates and Firefox is the latest version. Having difficulty setting up DuckDNS Posted: 29 Jan 2019 07:43 AM PST I've followed the instructions to a T here When I get to the section to test the script
I get an error "Warning: Failed to create the file /root/duckdns/duck.log: No such file or directory" I followed the recommendations here that said to manually create the file in /root/duckdns which I did. I even went back and ran the chmod command again to ensure that the new duck.log file also had the same permissions. Unfortunately nothing I've done has resolved the error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Please help me get away from Windows for most of the tasks Posted: 29 Jan 2019 01:21 PM PST Hi Linux Gods, please help me get away from windows for most of my daily tasks. I don't intend to switch from windows while playing games (even though there isn't much time for that anyway), so I still wanted to keep win10. For most of my daily tasks: RStudio, TeX, movies, ... I don't need to be running windows. If the only reason to switch would be esthetics, I'd still switch. The new win10 dark theme file explorer looks terrible. The computer I have is currently running 2 SSD's and 2 HDD's. If I'll keep win on one of the ssd's and install Mint on the other one, will I be able to access all the files I have on the hdd's? I really don't want to screw up the data on the hdd's. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Will installing Linux format the entire hard dirve ? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:38 PM PST Hey, I'm looking to make the switch to Linux from Windows. I was wondering if everything on my hard drive would be deleted if I were to install Linux. I have some school documents that I would rather keep. Thanks ! [link] [comments] |
Lubuntu - Problems getting security updates Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:01 PM PST Hello, To keep my Lubuntu system secure, I have been using the 'Discover' Software Centre and the 'Muon Package Manager' that came with the distro to get the latest security and other updates. This had been as simple as pressing the 'check for updates' button - and worked very nicely - until recently. When I try to check for updates using Discovery, I get a pop-up notice that reads: "E:Repository: http://www.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu cosmic-updates InRelease' changed its 'Suite' value from 'cosmic-security' to 'cosmic-updates' ", and another that reads: "The PackageKit Daemon has crashed". When I try to check for updates using the Muon Package Manager, the screen indicates that the manager has begun to update the software list but stops all action almost immediately and gives a pop-up notice that reads: "Failed to... Manager: Could not download packages". What can I do to solve this problem? Thanks. OS: Lubuntu 18.10 Hardware: Old AMD 64 Athlon X2 system [link] [comments] |
Can't see wifi list - no gui app Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:58 AM PST SOLUTION (here) I had to enable to notification aea plugin in the xfce4-panel Hello! I'm running Debian Stretch (GNU/Linux 4.9) and my issue is that I have no gui apps to help me see accessible wifi, no turn wifi on/off on the fly. It's always on and the only tool I have is some basic tool that DOESN'T show any wifi list. I have to find out the exact name and manually setup an access to force it. Also that doesn't always work if I get to choose the wrong security protocols (WAPS/PEAP/etc) and ofc nobody knows that when I'm in a bar, hotel, restaurant, work, airport... https://i.imgur.com/5VcLS6vl.png that's the tool I have. Other tabs don't show anything interesting. Don't know the name of the tool. I managed to set up my home wifi manually through the terminal but I'm looking for an interface. Nvidia and AMD graphics cards on same machine Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:31 AM PST I've been using Ubuntu 18 for a while with an Nvidia graphics card and it workes fine. I reacently added a second graphics card to machine only this card is an AMD card. Currently both cards are working fine side by side each drives a different monitor the only thing that's bothering me is that I only have a driver for the Nvidia card. The AMD card is using the default driver provided by ubuntu. Can I also install the official AMD graphics drivers alongside the Nvidia ones without compeletly messing up my system? Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Issue with Facebook Messaging Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:23 AM PST For some reason I have to refresh the page occasionally to see when messages are received. Otherwise it doesn't show that it's viewed or even hint at a reply. I can continue to message people after they reply without the reply showing up. This seems to be random? Any idea's what I could look into for remedying this? [link] [comments] |

Need help compiling a driver for Debian 9, kernel 4.9 Posted: 28 Jan 2019 08:50 PM PST I know my way around the Linux command line and currently use Debian 9 (stretch), kernel 4.9. I need to compile this driver (https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/e18acdc04ab2c4125ed4020db7f49a8dc35d1979) so my sound will work. I have never compiled a driver before. Can someone describe what to do or point me to a HOWTO? Thank you very much. [link] [comments] |
Is there something like CD image that lets you boot from a USB drive on an old system? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 05:17 AM PST I have this old trusty server. I bought it used, back in '11. The hardware is probably from somewhere between '05 and '09. It's soul purpose is a 10 year old Minecraft server, that my friends and i play on every once in a while. Here is my problem: When i set up the server with Ubuntu Server i didn't use an LTS version. I haven't used the server in a while. Support for the Server version currently installed has been dropped a while ago and i can't upgrade to a newer version. I don't mind installing from scratch, however the hardware is too old to boot from USB. So i have to burn the OS on a CD and install from there. Now, i was wondering, just in case this happens again. Is there some kind of software i can burn on a bootable CD, which does nothing but load an OS image from a USB drive? [link] [comments] |
Worse performance in Arch than Ubuntu Posted: 28 Jan 2019 06:53 PM PST Hi, I recently switched from Ubuntu to Arch, one thing I'm noticing is considerably worse performance even in native linux titles like Kerbal Space Program and CS:GO My hardware is not the best, still didn't get amazing performance before but now its damn near unplayable. GPU: Radeon HD5450 CPU: Athlon II X4 640, Quad-core 3.0GHz RAM: 4Gb Desktop Environment: KDE Plasma I also haven't been able to figure out how to OC this card since I switched to linux from windows (the more i research the more it seems its not possible due to it being so old) [link] [comments] |
