RTX laptops disappoint - MaxQ misleading Posted: 29 Jan 2019 06:21 AM PST
Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:09 AM PST Hi everyone, I'm in the market for a new gaming laptop. Purely gaming only. My previous is the Acer nitro V something with a gtx 960m. This laptop is basically being purchased so I can play total war three kingdoms and TW warhammer 3. Along with company of heroes occasionally. I've been looking at the link someone posted where the RTX generation was compared to the GTX generation and I'm just confused... I was specifically looking at the FPS test of BFV and it looks like the GTX 1080 max q can outperforms the 2070 max q and 2060. I'm not a tech guru but am I missing something? I have a $2500 budget and am looking at the Asus zephyrus gx531 on amazon with a 2070 for about $2199. Is it worth spending the extra money for that when I can get a asus zephyrus m gx501 on amazon with a GTX 1080 MQfor $1999? I realize it's still early since the embargo was lifted today. Any insight would be cool though [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:52 AM PST Hi, I'm looking for a new gaming laptop and my budget is around £1500 maximum. I would ideally like a 15" laptop with a 1070. I had considered spending a bit more for the MSI GE63 with a 2060, but it doesn't seem to be worth the money as it's not a lot better than the 1070. I am not too fussed about laptop weight, so perhaps a 1070 non Max-Q would be best, but I don't know which are Max-Q and which are. If anyone would be able to help, that would be great :) [link] [comments]

Are there any better options out there or is anything in that setup overkill/unnecessary? Ideally not a Lenovo machine because they're delivery times are completely unreasonable (currently trying to cancel an order with them). Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Laptop Suggestions - $1000-$1300, United States Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:53 PM PST * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1000-$1300, United States, Washington State * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Good battery is important, 2 in 1 is not a must but would be nice, Specs aren't a huge deal but I want to make sure RAM and processing power are above average. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Somewhat important, but not a dealbreaker but the thinner the better. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows preferred, Mac if it's my only option that fits my desires. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** Between 15"-18" * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** It is a possibility I will eventually use it for some photo editing, but isn't really involved in what I'm needing a laptop for * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** No gaming, but higher FPS the better. Not an issue. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Just longevity of life and processing speed.* **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** My biggest hang up here is that all the laptops I've ever owned/used have slowed down SIGNIFICANTLY after about 3-5 months of use to the point where even a google search takes several minutes. I don't use any programs that are overly intensive on the processor or RAM. I use chrome, slack, notion, Zoom.us, Grammarly and Spotify from time to time.d Granted, said laptops were a about a year old by the time I owned them. I don't want to run into that problem. I'd like a laptop to last 3-5 years.* Thanks so much!!! [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jan 2019 12:28 PM PST I have a razer huntsman elite, although it already has a button for sleep but thats not what I want it just turns off the screen and thats it. What I want is that my laptop goes to sleep completely(like it does when you close the lid for any laptop). Is there any way to do that ? please list all the ways you know. Should I get the Dell G7 or the Lenovo Legion y530? Or wait for the 2019 G7? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:35 AM PST Essentially just the title. I'm looking for a laptop that's decently priced that has longevity that can also run games well enough. I'll also be using it for school stuff as I go to college later this year. I'm leaning more towards the G7 because it's more powerful, but then it's a couple hundred more. Also, there's the new one coming out in a few months. Would that one be worth waiting for over these? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Dell Laptop Not Switching On Despite Power Button Lighting Up Briefly Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:17 AM PST I think my 5-year-old Dell laptop finally died on me. The fans used to make this whirring sound when the laptop's being switched on, but now only the power button lights up only for about 5 seconds and it just wouldn't start. I've even tried it while the charger was plugged in. Has anybody else experienced this before? Would greatly appreciate any advice at this point. [link] [comments]

Why do gaming notebooks often have very limited storage? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 07:04 AM PST I know, it's all about space, the thinner the device the less space you have for anything. But I can't get behind people buying an expensive gaming notebook which only has a 257GB or sometimes 512GB SSD. I mean, of course it may perform well in youtjbe reviews but if you want to use it for at least 2, 3 years and actually game on it, you probably won't be finding this enough. [link] [comments]
Need new school/gaming laptop, should I wait for Nvidia 2000 series graphics cards? Posted: 28 Jan 2019 09:14 PM PST My laptop is dying and I need to buy a new laptop asap. I want to get a laptop for school, but also that also has at least a nvidia 1060 6G for gaming. The thing is I've heard a new 2000 ling of graphics cards is being announced in the next few days, so I'm hesitent to buy a laptop now if there may be cheaper/better offers within the next few days. Specifically, I have my eye on this deal: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154900&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction-CS&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-CS-_-Gaming%20Laptops-_-MSI-_-34154900&cm_sp=&AID=11886886&PID=8267473&SID= (This deal is more expensive than I would like, but it seems better than any 1060 deals I can find) So should I wait for deals (although I can't wait more than a week or so), or should I go ahead and get a laptop now? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Intel i7-8750h runs at about 75-85 Celsius during gaming. Is this too hot? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 04:13 AM PST Laptop is an Asus ROG Strix Gl503. Intel i7-8750h with Nvidia Geforce 1050ti. During gaming sessions I noticed that my CPU temps (Monitored with MSI afterburner) are getting as high as 85 degrees. Intel states that 100 degrees is within normal operating temperature. My concern is that the high temperatures will shorten the lifespan of my CPU. Is this a realistic concern and if so, what temperature range could be considered "Safe" for component longevity? Chromebooks as a cheap student laptop? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:28 AM PST I need a laptop mainly for writing essays, note taking, and going through PowerPoint slides. I know Chromebooks aren't considered to be as good as traditional laptops but for the huge price difference could you recommend one for my needs? I'm a student on a budget otherwise I'd splash out on a more pricey bit of a tech. Thanks in advance for the help, I'm new to this sub and have never owned a laptop before so the choice is quite daunting. What do you guys think? Thanks! What I'd use the PC for: - Use Chrome with multiple windows and multiple tabs in each window (some of them being video streaming websites, some being social media like Facebook and Instagram, etc.). I just want it to be pretty lag-free when I switch between windows and tabs (and between light software as well -- though nothing fancy at all). - I don't game at all. - I don't need any apps from the Microsoft Store. - Watch HD movies on it (which seems to work just fine, and look just fine) with my current 1366 x 768 HP display. Choosing between two Lenovo W540 or Asus GL752VW Posted: 29 Jan 2019 08:58 AM PST Was looking for the help from the reddit community to decide which laptop to part ways with, and which one to keep. What do I do with these laptops
Here are the basic stats of each laptop in question. Lenovo Thinkpad W540
Asus ROG GL752VW
I ran a benchmark and find that these computers are both similar in performance (minor differences with Thinkpad performing 3% better) https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4800MQ/m34954vsm3437 Need to know which one to keep and which one to sell, the ASUS rog is extremely large and bulky, very heavy but runs mid-level steam games well, something I can't do with the ThinkPad, but I do have an external GPU set up with a 1050Ti that can connect to the ThinkPad via PCIe that would make it a gaming set up without any problem. No plans on hardcore gaming but more of a side computer for work so I don't have to use my actual gaming computer for it. (prefer separating my work life with personal life) . The ThinkPad is much older but works flawless and like a charm still since I take great care of my items. Both great laptops for sure, which is why this is such a difficult choice. Any help or suggestions? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Jan 2019 08:26 PM PST Official Dimensions (taken from manufacturer websites) in centimetres or lbs, rounded to the nearest hundredths: Asus ROG Zephyrus S GS701 - 39.9(W) x 27.2(D) x 1.87(H) cm MSI GS75 Stealth - 39.6(W) x 25.6(D) x 1.90(H) cm Rough take away, the Asus laptop is around 20% heavier, and 5% bigger than the MSI laptop if the provided dimensions are accurate. - Was on the hunt for a 17 inch laptop that was both powerful but still reasonably easy to bring around, and I don't think any other new/upcoming laptops fit the bill better than these two very similarly specced laptops (i7-8750H and RTX graphics). Posted: 29 Jan 2019 08:49 AM PST I am looking at getting a new laptop and want to be able to configure it. I have heard really good things about HIDEvolution, however them being based in the US concerns me with regards to returns / repairs / RMA's / etc. Is there a similar reseller that will configure laptops based in the UK? Im looking for MSI maybe ASUS branded laptops that are then configured rather than Clevo laptops (or similar). [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jan 2019 08:38 AM PST So, I got this laptop, a decent Asus Vivobook S15 with a Core i5-8250u, MX150, Optane memory, and it has an aluminum top cover. Beyond that, the touchpad is great and my only gripe beyond what I'm about to tell you is that there's no indicator light for caps lock. I recently delved into Intel XTU and undervolted my system. Before undervolting, it was getting up to a max of 92° C in the CPU benchmark. I decided this wasn't ideal and so I undervolted it by 100mV. This resulted in a drop in temperatures to low-80s and high 70s. Marvelous. I did the same with the graphics, and saw similar results. I was quite happy so far. However, I wanted to do better, and I knew I could. Aftermarket thermal compound, particularly the best stuff on the market, Kryonaut, should have given me at least a degree or two in temp reduction, right? Well, I did a full clean of the processor chip and the heatsink. After putting everything back together, I started up XTU with the same undervolt profile as before and ran a benchmark. My results? Worse! The score was 408 down from 413, and the max temperature was 92°C. I tried over and over again to get better results, thinking maybe it was a fluke, maybe there was something running in background, etc. Always worse. It capped out at 411 with a max temp of 94°C. I actually deactivated the undervolt to see if maybe that wasn't working properly, but interestingly enough, the scores went up to 426 with a max temp of 96°C. Strange, right? So I reloaded the profile and gave it another go to no avail. Still it sat in the 90s. I realized I must have wrongly applied the paste. So I took apart my machine and saw even spread of the paste on my processor with not much mess as I was expecting. I cleaned it all up again and carefully reapplied the paste, going for the line method (cpu dies are long so a dot wont work to spread the paste all the way). I didn't use as much paste this time because I thought maybe I has used too much before. I put everything back together and ran benchmarks again. I got the same results. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I purchased the Kryonaut from Amazon. Did I get a bad batch? A fake product? I've heard of companies putting second-rate product in name-brand tubes and selling them to make a quick buck. I honestly HOPE that is the issue. Is my laptop just screwed for temps now? Sorry, I'm just so frustrated. Hopefully someone has experience with this? Thanks so much. TL;DR: I bought Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut expecting good temps, and after multiple application attempts, I did not get any positive results. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jan 2019 08:38 AM PST Asus F405UA-BM171T - CPU: I5 7200U
HP 250 G6 - CPU: I5 7200U
The laptop will mainly be used for watching movies/YouTube and browsing the web, but also some light gaming such as CSGO, MW-MW3, Cuphead, and should be able to run these games at low settings and not dropping below 40 fps. Will this do? [link] [comments]
