Persistant linux install on an external SSD?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:17 AM PST

Hi guys, not entirely new to linux but still get lost and looking for some advice.

Basically i want to start using a linux distro (probably mint) for everyday web browsing and medial tasks and keep my windows gaming machine separate (game pretty much everyday). I'm not a fan of dual booting and was looking into other ways of doing it, including building myself a tiny ITX Ryzen G PC for it. But i remeber hearing or reading a while ago about maybe creating a persistant linux install on an external drive (in this case ill grab an external samsung SSD T5 thing).

Questions are Is this doable and realiable for running a linux distro for everyday tasks?

Will i run into hardware issues or other compantiblity issues (severely decreased performance, video issues for youtube, plex etc)?

If it is a decent idea, are there any guides i can follow ot create the persistant install or any tips on doing such a thing?

    Thanks for reading

The system the drive will connect to will be through USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection, Ryzen 2700x, 1080 Ti, 16GB RAM

    Netflix on Raspberry Pi

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 07:27 AM PST

Welcome everybody,I've recently got myself a Raspberry Pi 3B+ (I think it's the newest one) and installed raspbian with NOOBs.

It came with preinstalled Chromium and I want to use the computer as multimedia center. I can run videos online, YouTube runs flawlessly as well. But when I try to watch something on netflix it tells me that I need to use browser with HTML5 support or install Silverlight (which is obviously bad).

    Best regards, ebonmavv.

    Virtual Machine Storage Location

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:10 AM PST

Hi, I'm using Linux Mint and I want to run Windows 10 on Virtual Box so I can access Microsoft Office 365. However when creating the Virtual Disc size I would like have it on my secondary hard drive but Virtual box doesn't give me the option to store it anywhere else but the Linux Partition. Is there anyway to change this? Or is there a better way of access Office 365 - I know with Wine you can use up to 2013 but I'm wanting to use the latest model...

    Thank you in advance

    'S' Not Appearing in Terminal

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 01:01 PM PST

I wanted to track my config files, so I set up a separate folder to do so and now just source these in my .vimrc & .bashrc files (e.g. source ~/.config/vim/.vimrc. I saw this set-up tip on YouTube.) I was setting up git in this new folder and all of a sudden my s key no longer did anything in the terminal. All other number and letter keys work just fine and the s key works in every other program tried so far, just not the terminal. I've restarted my computer and the problem persists. Any ideas where this is coming from??

    [Using Linux Mint with Cinnamon]

Edit: for any other beginners out there: in the meantime I've been using 'fc' to get around this issue. This allows you to edit the last command in vim, so you can do any vim-style editing on the command you'd like to.

Any particular reason whu most Linus users also have Windows 10 as well?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:17 PM PST

Most people I've seen that say transfer to Linux and how Linux is better than Windows always have Windows as well as Linux, is there any particular reason for that?

I don't doubt that Linux is better but what's the point of having Windows as well?

What is /snap/core/6130 (or rather, what is mounted there)? Gave it a search but couldn't find anything

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 12:08 PM PST

I don't remember ever installing a snap, yet when I run lsblk I see two snap packages, one mounted at snap/core/6130 and on mounted at /snap/kde-frameworks-5/27. I'm guessing that kde-frameworks one is important and necessary, but I'm wondering what exactly the snap at snap/core/6130 represents. Anyone know?

Manjaro - How to install “video-Linux” driver from command line?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 04:17 AM PST

It's very easy to change the video driver from Manjaro Settings—>Hardwareconfiguration if you have access to the Desktop environment. Unfortunately I changed from "video-Linux" to "video-vesa" (because I am stupid...).

Now how can I reinstall the "video-Linux" driver from command line?

Can a Linux SSD HDD be transferred to New machine?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 07:26 AM PST

I have an install of unbuntu on an 128gb SSd that runs my media server and network storage, I recently received a I5 desktop that I want to convert to my new Linux Server, Can I just switch the HDD to the new machine and Boot or will it error out like as windows install does if the same thing is tried. Or are there steps that can be taken to allow for this switch, I can do a reinstall if I need to I am just trying to avoid all the setup and configuration as the data is stored on separate drives.

Thanks in advance for any info

Script or command for vpn IP

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 06:56 AM PST

Not finding anything I'm looking for regarding this.

I have multiple servers with multiple IPs. On my Ubuntu boxes I'm using OpenVPN, netplan for ips.

Curious if there's a script or command I can use to change what the IP will be for my vpn account.

I believe we are using ufw alongside iptables, but I see no entries in iptables regarding the vpn.

Just curious where I should start to look or figure out how to achieve this.

Edit: even a link to a well written tutorial on doing it through iptables would be excellent. I just can't find any working well written ones. (Even if it's multiple users each with own IP)

Installing Nastran and Patran to Ubuntu

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:52 AM PST

The supported platforms for the software that are mentioned in the title are given as either RHEL or SUSE Enterprise. (MSC Supported Platforms) However I do not have those distros. Searching the web, YouTube and other support sites did not give me any satisfactory answer. What should I do to install these onto my Ubuntu laptop?

    Connecting to ftp

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 03:53 AM PST

So I've been trying to connect to my Google Cloud Compute Engine computer ftp server, which is Pure-FTPd.

I installed and configured the ftp server with this tutorial, and it has worked fine on other servers.

When trying to connect externally via filezilla or cyberduck i get this error

Error: Disconnected: No supported authentication methods available (server sent: publickey)

But doesnt make sense to me since I can connect locally via the ssh and it works perfect.

    $ ftp localhost

    Connected to localhost.

    220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [privsep] [TLS] ----------

    Remote system type is UNIX.

Using binary mode to transfer files.

    ftp> ls

    200 PORT command successful

    226 1 matches total

    ftp> exit

221-Goodbye. You uploaded 0 and downloaded 0 kbytes.

    221 Logout.

The ftp server is configured to work with user and password, and it asks me a publickey, which I suppose is TLS, what should I do?

Edit: The Distro is Debian 9 Stretch.

Edit 2: With this tutorial it worked, I only needed to do that echo, thing is it only works with FileZilla, not Cyberduck.

Want to start messing around with Ubuntu

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:47 PM PST

I'm going to run on this on my MacBook Pro. I already have Parallels installed because I need to run a specific windows program for work. My question is what would be better as a beginner...to setup a virtual machine using Parallels or create a bootable USB drive with Ubuntu? What are the pros & cons of each? Looking forward to learning and playing with Linux! Thanks in advance!

    Distro/Drivers for wifi help

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 02:01 AM PST

I've been trying to use a linux distro on my ASUS VivoBook S. I've tried Ubuntu and its flavors, elementary os, fedora, and linux mint. Either the distro doesn't have proper wifi or the distro is unstable to the point of it being unusable. I have tried to follow guides online, but to no avail. Im wondering if there is a certain distro which has proper wifi driver and stability that would work well on my laptop. Thanks again.

Edit: did a lspci, the network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co. Device b822

Distro Advice - Ubuntu (MATE or Kubuntu) vs Debian vs Fedora?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:51 PM PST

Lifelong Windows user here, who recently switched over to Kubuntu 18.04 about four months ago. Since then, I have quite fallen in love with the Linux ecosystem as well as its overall community and ethos.

All in all, have been satisfied with Kubuntu, so why fix what's not broken, right? Well, I looked at it as a great transitional stepping stone for migrating from Windows to Linux and it's been exactly that. However, I need to do a fresh install either way to merge the existing partitions on my hard drive and and would like to carefully select a distro I can comfortably grow with moving forward.

I have three primary personal needs (all of equal importance, in my mind): as a web developer, as a musician and as a gamer. The trick is finding the distro that is equally compatible with all three pursuits. Which of the following options would you advise and why:

    1. Stick w/ Kubuntu
    2. Ubuntu MATE - I've been reading a lot of great things about this and the desktop seems quite stable and flexible.
    3. Debian - Like the Ubuntu flavors, I greatly value that it seems to have one of the best repos and would therefore, I assume, be one of the best options for present and future third-party music software support (think Reaper, Bitwig, Pianoteq, u-he plugins, etc.). Have read that it's generally more stable, but don't know enough about how it differs from Ubuntu otherwise. In particular, I'm concerned about the potential messiness of the Ubuntu release cycle and how to deal with upgrades between versions.
    4. Fedora - Have seen a lot of people recommending this heavily, and it does seem quite intriguing. My primary concern, however, is software support as it doesn't have as large of a market share as Ubuntu and Debian.
    5. Another distro that I'm not currently considering.

Genuinely appreciate any and all advice and insight that you have to offer. As always, I don't know what I don't know, but trying to learn quickly!

    Sending mail on bash

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:58 PM PST

I'm currently processing a job on a supercomputer, and I want to send myself an email to notify me when it's done. How can I do this? PS: I submit my job using a bash script, so all I'd have to do is add a couple lines to the end of the file that send me an email.
