Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:11 AM PST Hi folks - I'm about to setup my first couple of vlans but have a couple simple questions in terms of networking best practices. I know that each vlan should have a gateway (xx.xx.xx.1) I know that each manged switch should have a management interface ip assigned (xx.xx.xx.2) However; what i'm curious about is what should that management interface ip be? Currently my network is flat: 192.168.0.x if i create a vlan for 192.168.30.x and 10.180.40.x Should the management interface IP for the managed switches stay on 192.168.0.x (ie 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3)? New to vlans but I really want to do this right. Hoping the community can help direct! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:36 PM PST Long time lurker who is finally fed up with his Eero system and looking for a more complete setup. I recently moved into a 1200 sq ft single story home with finished basement. I am looking to redo my setup as I am having issues with devices dropping from Eero's. I rely heavily on my internet because I do not have cable and use YoutubeTV in living room, bedrooms, and bar area in basement. I also work from home and am piecing together a rapidly growing smart home. I do not have a lot of devices connected (20-30 currently), however everything I use is running of my network and I will be looking to expand as well. I have been doing research and am looking at the following equipment, but am desperately in need of advice or recommendations. I have heard and read nothing but good things regarding Ubiquiti products and was going to begin my journey with the 3 products below. I am not sure if the below is complete overkill or if it will work for my house. I am also not completely sure if the CloudKey is needed or not, but from what I am reading it is not completely necessary. I am planning to run ethernet cables from the switch through the attic to bedrooms, living room, and basement to hardwire as many devices as possible and run everything else of 1 or 2 access points. I currently get 500 MBPS down and will be soon getting 1GB fiber. Ubiquiti USG 1 or 2 Ubiquiti NanoHD or AC Lite AP's Ubiquiti 16 port switch Again, new to Networking but very eager to learn and research. I appreciate any assistance. [link] [comments] |
buying an old thin client for nas usage Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:23 PM PST i was thinking of picking up an old thin client like a fujitsu futro 550 or an hp t5540 for example as a simple nas for backups and movie streaming (without encoding) for around 20-30€. i already have 2 2tb usb hdds. the problem is that most of them only have usb 2 and if i want usb 3 i'd need to pay double the price for something like an fujitsu futro s720 for 50€. how much of a difference is usb 3 gonna make in this scenario? considering it's rather old hardware. thanks. Trouble with modem and routers in bridge mode Posted: 01 Jan 2019 03:08 PM PST Hello, I have a modem that assigns IPs. From 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.127 on LAN (2 other routers I have connected in bridge mode) and from 192.168.1.128 to 192.168.1.254 on WLAN. All the 3 routers have the same SSID, PASS, etc. so if someone connects close to any of the routers he is going to get an ip between the first range mentioned and if someone connects to my wifi close to my modem he is going to get an ip from the second range. If someone roams from the router to the modem, it is going to roam perfectly, it doesn't drop connection and if someone roams from the modem to the router it also works perfectly. It also keeps the IP address from the range it was connected at first, it doesn't renew and doesn't drop connection, which that's fine. Sometimes, I don't know why but some devices lose internet access (but they are still connected to the wifi) and after a few seconds they have internet again and I think is due to something about IPs but I'm not sure. The 2 routers right now are in bridge mode and they are on "obtain IP address automatically" because if I set a static ip to the routers, when the devices roam, they do not really roam because they drop connection and renew ip from the other range. My question is, what would be the best way to configure this so that the devices can move and connect to all access points without having any problem. The modem is an askey cable modem, one router is from my isp and the other is a Linksys ea3500. Thanks in advance. Recently my mom got this message when I tried to renew her IP from windows. I don't know if this give you a hint of what may be the problem. "An error occurred while renewing interface xxx : The name specified in the Network Control Block (NCB) is in use on a remote adapter. The NCB is the data." [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:07 PM PST Hey all. I just upgraded my backup solution, which was just an external HDD connected to the router acting as a NAS. The old one was a Toshiba 1TB, which was just plug-and-play, the router recognized it, and it appeared in File Explorer. I bought a WD My Book 3TB today, and it's not showing up. I tried formatting as both NTFS and FAT, nothing. I thought maybe the router only recognizes up to 2TB per the manual and created a 2TB partition, still didn't work. The router recognizes it, I'm able to change settings and such when I go to the router in IE, it just doesn't show up in File Explorer. The router is an ASUS RT-AC3100. Thank you, ryguy28896 [link] [comments] |
Having trouble setting up old router as access point. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:43 AM PST I have a Netgear DG834Nv1 that I want to use as a wireless access point. My main modem/router is a BT Voyager 2110. I've connected a LAN port on the Voyager to a LAN port on the Netgear. DHCP is switched off on the Netgear, and it has a static IP of 192.168.1.2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Voyager has a static IP of 192.168.1.1 DHCP is switched on on the Voyager, and it is restricted to assign to addresses with the range 192.168.1.10-192.168.1.254. When I connect to the Voyager (wirelessly), I can ping the Netgear address, but packet loss is 70%. When I connect to the Netgear (on another LAN port), I can ping the Voyager, but packet loss is 70%. I can't access the internet at all when connected to the Netgear. I can't ping 8.8.8.8 or anything. When I disconnect the cable connecting the two and use it to connect directly to the Voyager, then packet loss is 0% when I ping the Voyager. Likewise, when I connect directly to the Netgear using the same LAN port that I had used to connect to the Voyager, packet loss is 0% when I ping the Netgear. So I have established that the ports on both devices are functioning correctly, as well as the cables. The hardware seems fine. So why are they not talking to each other properly? Why are they so bad at pinging each other and why can't I ping addresses outside of the local network? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:20 PM PST I currently have ATT's gigabit fiber optic on a one bedroom apartment. As many of you may know, their router is terrible. I have about 20 devices connected to it and it has been nothing but a nightmare to deal with. I have looked into a couple of routers that provide mimu and/or mesh technologies. The reason why I am looking for a router with mesh is because I am planning on moving into a house within the next year. I am looking for something that will last and wont cause many issues with all the devices connected. As far as the price goes, I am looking for something good but not something that would be over top expensive. Any recommendations are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Need help finding out whats wrong with my internet Posted: 01 Jan 2019 06:06 PM PST So i don't know a lot about what routers and modems exactly do, But i do have a decent plan for At&t ( as decent as at&t can get...) The thing is, i don't get my full plan, i get only a portion of it. To better my internet down and up speeds should I buy a router or a modem to fix this? or even a combo? And if so... Which one (for router, modems, or even combos)? I usually game so id like to have decent internet speeds. As it has taken me over 15 hours just to download Battle field 1 [link] [comments] |
Gigablast coming soon in my area, need modem upgrade. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 05:27 PM PST Hello, I got referred to post here form a different sub. As of now I have a SB6190 (Puma 6 chipset) and a NightHawk AC3200 . I am getting Gigablast in my area within the new few months and I want to be prepared, unlike the last modem upgrade I got 2 years ago with the SB6190 that has given me heaps of problems which I recently discovered... As of now I am looking at ISP approved 3 modems : Motorola MB8600, ARRIS SB8200 and NETGEAR CM1000 . As of now I am uncertain if there is actually any performance differences (stability?) or benefits that I can gain from the different brands? Ever have really bad customer experience with one so you can't recommend them? Got another recommendation? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:01 AM PST Hi folks, I have two RT AC68U routers working as an AP / aimesh and aimesh node. These are both connected to two seperate dumb switches which feed into my main switch in the master closet. My firewall is a pfense firewall so the ap / node are not performing this function. When i reboot the aimesh node; my network connectivity on the clients that share the same switch as the aimesh node will all go down until the node is back up. What is happening here? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:54 PM PST How does roaming work with UniFi devices? I have a (Gen 1?) UniFi AP (in use along side my crappy router), and I'm considering getting a second one. Is it possible to set up roaming on these devices? If so, would my phone/laptop etc automatically connect to the nearest device, or does it only switch when connection is lost? I'm not looking to spend a few hundred dollars, but if I can get something used on ebay, then I'm willing to put in the work to get it up and running. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Issues with a server, pingplotter results, need help Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:27 PM PST Someone who is more familiar with this stuff know what I could potentially do on my end? I'm getting packet lost on my first hop which is my own router correct? Any info would be great. edit: I added a test to google https://imgur.com/AGwnFLD test to myself (now plugged directly into my modem via ethernet): https://imgur.com/a3bXdTX [link] [comments] |
I think I need an additional router Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:13 PM PST I'm new to anything networking outside of the usual cable modem-to-router connection. This is a diagram of my current network, and the network I want: Summary: I have a cable modem -> wireless router -> (unmanaged ?) switch -> rest of house. This works just fine. Problem: I want to move my wireless router out of my closet. So, I connected my cable modem -> switch -> Router. This doesn't work, the router does not detect an internet signal. I thought it was because it was in router mode, and I needed to change it to AP mode. That didn't work either. I think AP mode is disabling DHCP. So now, I'm thinking that I need that cable modem -> router -> switch -> rest of house configuration, and then connect my wireless router outside of my closet. If that's unnecessary, please let me know. But, if that is the only solution, can I get a recommendation of a small non-wireless router? I have limited space in the wiring closet. Also, if that router can provide POE, that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:07 PM PST This is for my own router in another floor of the house. All I did originally was plug in and works. Now all of a sudden it doesn't connect to the internet. I checked the modem and the cables and they are all working fine. I even power cycled them. But the modem is refusing to connect with the router. What do I need to do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 02:04 PM PST So I went to move my modem from my kitchen to my bedroom and turns out it doesn't work the DSL light will blink green then stay solid red in my bedroom. I've been doing some research online and it looks like it's due to the phone jack. How can I make my bedroom phone jack work with my modem. I replaced the phone jack itself in the bedroom and that didn't seem to do anything. Please help... a P.S First time using Reddit [link] [comments] |
(NEED HELP: TP-link Router not working on some devices) Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:56 PM PST I've used my TP-Link EAP225 router for a couple of weeks. It worked on my MacBook, iPhone but not on my Android TV for some reason. Today I got a new roommate, and he couldn't connect to the internet. He got the same error as my Android TV did. It's trying to configure the IP address and just gets stuck there. First I thought it was a android problem (he has a samsung phone) but when he tried on his Mac it didn't work there either. I tried tweaking around with some settings on http://tplinkeap.net/ but I'm not very IP savvy. I hope someone can help me with this! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:07 AM PST Hi all, lerker but first time poster. If not allowed, you can remove. I am working on setting up my first home lab. I work in IT helpdesk/field tech and structural low-voltage cabling. Anyways, I'm curious what other fun or useful equipment and software you all have used that's either free or on the cheaper (budget) end. I understand that a lot of the best equipment is an arm and a leg but unfortunately spending a lot is just not an option right now. I currently have: •cisco sf300-24 10/100 managed switch. •cisco sf200-48 10/100 smart switch. •A tripp.lite rack-mount power strip. •An APC back-UPS pro 1500. •A lynksys WRT 3200acm home router. •An 8U tripp.lite network cage. •A little intel nuc (for whatever software) •A 24 port patch panel. (if I decide to have fun with the cabling side) •Raspberry Pi. I'm probably going to get PFsence or something similar soon. I would love to hear what you all have found helpful or fun while working/learning on budget. Thank you all. :) [link] [comments] |
No connection between my router and smart tv Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:30 PM PST I just recently had posted on here about an issue with my speed of my connection involving my Deco M5 system. Since then it has been working flawlessly, so I really appreciate it the help. An issue popped up today though when I tried connecting my new Samsung smart tv to the network. it sees it but wont connect. Its not the tv as far as I know because I can hard wire it in and it works fine. If I create a hot spot with my phone, I can connect to that and it works no problem. Just trying to connect to the home network is a no go. [link] [comments] |
Blue Ridge Cable Dream Gig Help Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:41 AM PST I have a 32x8 modem (CM700) and just upgraded to BRC's dream gig service. I am currently getting 400mb/s through my R7000 router. My modem is bonding 16x4. Using the R7000 with v1.09 firmware I was getting atrocious speeds (5 over 40? lol) so I backed down to 1.07x that people were having good luck with. I was still getting 400mb/s (over 40) I then flashed latest Kong dd-wrt to enable the Shortcut Forwarding Engine feature in hopes that it would be a similar technology to cut-through firewall features. I am still getting ~400 over 40. I found someone complaining about comcast only bonding 4 channels up and that being the reason why they were getting lower speeds than their advertised gig service. Any suggestions? The only thing I can find is that BRC is mandating a docsis 3.1 modem, DD-WRT using software NAT instead of hardware (but I wasn't getting gig with stock firmware either), and my modem only bonding 4 channels instead of 8. Looking for Home WiFi that plays nice with Smart Home products Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:24 PM PST Any recommendations on home WiFi systems that will be supporting Smart Home products? Currently I have a Time Capsule and an Airport Express and they seem to cut out for a few seconds maybe once a day or so. I had been considering the Google WiFi system but I heard that it decides on it own whether to use the 5GHz or 2.4GHz bands which might cause issues for some devices that can only work on the 2.4 band. I don't have a very big house, its only one story and its about 60'x30' single story. Right now I primarily use Apple HomeKit as my smart home but I also have a couple of Nest cams as well that I want to be able to make sure that they all can perform well. [link] [comments] |
New modem, limited connectivity and only able to visit few websites. Posted: 01 Jan 2019 09:02 AM PST I purchased a new modem (Netgear CM1000) for my Xfinity service. I had been informed that my old router was no longer compatible. Since installing it, I have only been able to get a connection through ethernet. My wifi router (Netgear R6700v2) does not recognize a connection at all. When connected directly to ethernet, I was able to access the xfinity activation page, but it won't connect to a site like reddit. I've been in contact with Xfinity. Both modem and router have been rebooted (I also did a factory reset of my wifi router). They verified that a connection exists, but suspect that there may be "IP issues." A tech can't be here until Thursday, so just wanted to reach out to the community and see if you had any ideas. [link] [comments] |
Cant change M7540 eRouter Provisioning Mode to eRoute IPv4 only Posted: 01 Jan 2019 08:35 AM PST I am setting up pi-hole on my home network and am at a loss for what my next troubleshooting step should be. At first I was trying to set the DNS for IPv6 in my router settings, but no such setting exists. I am unable to change it. Since for some reason IPv6 superceeds IPv4, i decided to disable IPv6 on the router entirely. To do this I need to change the eRouter Provisioning Mode from eRoute-DualMode to only IPv4. The opition can only be changed when the modem is not connected to a cable line, and has been power cycled. When I do those things It shows me the option to change it, and I hit save. The router then reboots and has changed itself back to eRoute_DualMode. Any help in either (a) setting a custom IPv6 DNS on the router or (b) disabling IPv6 would be great. I know how to do this for each individual computer, but I want to have it be done on the network level. [link] [comments] |
Enabling MU-MIMO will disable STBC. Good or bad? Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:37 AM PST When I go into the settings of my modem/router to enable MIMO I get this small warning. My question is, do I leave MU-MIMO deactivated or no? I googled around and I found what MU MIMO is and its benefits, but anything about STBC is not in layman terms I can comprehend. Use an old CPU vs buying a slightly newer one Posted: 01 Jan 2019 10:33 AM PST Sometime later this year my main desktop will get a much needed upgrade. It has an ancient but respectable 2600k that still runs great, but I'm unsure of how it would perform for a home server as far as power draw and capabilities (iirc vtd is not supported on this cpu.) I initially wanted to reuse most of the components (CPU/Mobo/Ram/storage drive) to build a home server, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off buying a slightly newer CPU. Something like an i5-6600, I'm not too sure what the best CPU would be but I'd like to have some flexibility on what to use my server for down the road. Some server tasks I want it to run: -file storage/backups (lots of photography redundancy/storage, ~1TB in photos alone currently) -download and playback media server -VPN server for remote desktop off network -Security footage storage/playback -web server just for messing around? maybe eventually hosting my own website just for kicks.
