    Simple Questions - January 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:17 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Please help, computer running too fast (This is not a joke. 5.15Ghz *idle* clock speed.)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 12:13 AM PST

UPDATE: Thanks for the responses. I decided to just go into the BIOS and see if I could find anything to turn down or change manually. Found an option under tools to optimize settings and I figured I would give it a shot. It changed a few things, and currently I'm at 4.41GHz on all cores, with an average 1.2V across all cores, idle temps around 38-41 degrees after a 30 minute makeshift stress test of running around in Skyrim making sure I don't get a BSOD again, during which I reached a max temp of 65 degrees on core 2, low 60s / high 50s on the other cores.

I know I need to do a lot more testing and learning about OC'ing than this to make sure everything is stable... run some actual stress tests or something... but at least for the moment things seem a lot better. I'm just not sure why all of my cores are the same clock speed all the time, or if it's normal for them to even be as high as 4.4GHz during 3% total CPU usage.

I still don't know why "Normal" settings did this. Thanks for your suggestions.

Over the holiday season, I built a PC for workstation & gaming use. When I finally got everything assembled and powered it on, I was so relieved to see a BIOS screen. It posted and everything was fine.

There were a lot of options in the BIOS that I did not know how to configure, so I figured factory default settings would be fine. There were "EZ System Tuning" options such as "Fast" and "Extreme Tuning," but I left it on "Normal," and did not change any settings. I still have a lot to learn about overclocking, and at some point in the future I figured I would play around with the settings, maybe run a benchmark or two, and then settle into a nice mild boosted frequency. The BIOS listed my CPU as an 8700k (3.7GHz) @ 3.7GHz. I didn't even tweak the settings to make my RAM operate at advertised speeds. I just wanted to install Windows and play a game or two.

A few weeks went by, I got everything set up how I wanted, installed the programs and games that I wanted, got folders organized, etc. Then I decided to play Skyrim. It always looked like garbage on my old laptop, so I thought it would be fun to see how good it looked on the new machine, with all the graphics mods that I could never run before.

Around this time I installed hwinfo64, since I wanted a program to display CPU & GPU temperatures in my system tray, so I could keep an eye on them.

Suddenly, while playing my modded Skyrim, everything locked up, a horrible buzzing noise started blasting through my headphones, and I was greeted by a Blue Screen of Death regarding a "page fault in non paged area." I had followed a guide online to change my page file settings, so I figured I must have done something wrong and set them back to Windows default. Loaded up Skyrim again. A few minutes later, another BSOD. This time with a different error message: "A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval." Now I was worried, and I was told it could be a hardware issue.

I ran a Windows Memory Diagnostic test and everything came back clean. No RAM problems. But what if it was my CPU and Motherboard?

I opened hwinfo64 to see if there might be any hints of a hardware issue. Felt like looking under the hood of a car with no idea how an engine works. I guess I was looking for smoke.

    And I found it. https://imgur.com/a/au0tp6h

Why are all 6 cores of my CPU running at 5.15GHz while the system is idle??? Why am I even getting 5GHz at all? I thought I was at 3.7GHz all this time! Why is my motherboard sending 1.4-1.5V across all cores? If this is "NORMAL" then why even have an "EXTREME" setting in the BIOS???

I have powered my PC off and on, it still says 3.7GHz in the BIOS, but as soon as Windows launches, everything jumps to 5.15GHz and just stays there. All the time. Temperatures spike into the 60's but that's just at idle, I haven't been monitoring them while playing games.

I may not know a ton about PC's, but I'm guessing that running at 5.15GHz constantly is bad for more than just Skyrim. I'm worried this expensive machine that I thought would last me 10 years will now be dead inside of a week. I'm scared to turn it on at this point! I have no clue what is causing it to overclock so aggressively just all the damn time or how to stop it.

The only non-Windows processes on my computer that launch at startup are Skype, Discord, Steam, hwinfo64, and some driver software like GeForce Experience.

If anyone could help me or shed some light on what might be going on here, I would really appreciate it. Otherwise a tech support person at ASUS is gonna have to listen to me cry on the phone.

I have an Asus Prime Z370-A motherboard, an Intel i7 8700k processor, and a Kraken X62 AIO cooler. The pump runs at a constant 2000RPM btw, and I don't know if that's normal.

Thank you for reading. Happy new year.

This was my first build after ascending from years of Xbox One & an Intel Pentium laptop which struggled with almost everything!

I built my PC just before Christmas and the build went very well, I didn't have a single issue. I had spent many hours reading guides and opinions on parts all over the internet (inlcuding PCPP, YouTube, Tom's Hardware etc.) but the most valuable resource was the r/buildapc subreddit! You guys have been so helpful and you've answered so many of my questions which made me much more confident when it came to building.

I have linked an album of my PC build, but the main point of this post was to thank you all for being such a helpful community.

    Surprise first build this weekend

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 07:26 AM PST

So one day my 17-year-old brother-in-law texted me out of the blue for a suggestion on a laptop under $500 that he could game with. I gave him some options but also told him that any gaming on a laptop for that price wouldn't be the greatest and if possible he should get a desktop, or better yet let me build him one. He already has a functioning laptop to use for school, he just wanted something to game on. I recently upgraded my R9 270 to an RX 580 and said we could even use the old R9 which would save them some money.

His dad asked if I could just look at their old desktop which wasn't turning on any more and maybe fix it up and just make it an acceptable gaming PC. I agreed and when I picked it up I came to the conclusion the power supply was out. I told him I could get it running for $70 (he also needed a wifi card to move it into his room and get internet) and it should work fine for my BIL. It had an old i5-3330 and 1333MHz RAM but the only games he plays are league of legends and borderlands so it would have worked.

The plan was for him to come over and me show him how to diagnose and fix the issue, since he has interest in computer science. Well I got the new PSU two days ago and the thing still wouldn't turn on. After further digging it turns out the PSU and motherboard are fried. I told my father-in-law and explained I could get a new mobo if he really wanted but it wouldn't make sense for such an old platform. I also gave figures for some cheap AMD options for a build and agreed to a build that would cost just over $300.

The best thing is, however, that my BIL has no idea. I'm picking him up after school to bring him over to diagnose the computer, which last he knew just had a bad power supply. We will swap out the power supplies, expecting it to work, but it won't. He'll get disappointed that he isn't getting a computer he can game with when lo and behold I pull out a stack of boxes and he'll get to build his first PC. I have never been more excited to build a computer before.

    Specs:

    MSI B450M PRO-M2

    Ryzen 3 2200G

    Saphire Dual X R9 270 2GB

    8GB Viper Elite DDR4 2400MHz

    Corsair CX550M 550 Watt Bronze

    WD Blue 500GB HDD

    Kingston 120 GB SSD

I also bought him a $55 case with a window and blue lights since that's his favorite color to put it all in. It would have fit in the old tower, but it somehow looks worse than my tower, which is plain enough as it is, and I thought it would be a cool contribution. I'll post photos after we build it this weekend.

Edit: I decided to buy him an SSD. The dad didn't want to spend the extra money, I first tried getting him to go for a 2600 for $50 more or an SSD for $25 but he wanted to keep costs low. I have an SSD myself and a 1600 so I knew they would be great upgrades. After many comments suggesting an SSD I just decided to buy one myself as a gift, in addition to the case.

Am I the only one who feels the back of the case after an intense gaming session? :D

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:03 PM PST

Usually when I am playing this tough graphic intensive triple A games for a couple of hours my GPU takes over and shows whos boss. Am I the only one who takes a feel to the back of the case to see the heat produced from these sessions after gaming or wot? I do this to give my GPU the respect it deserves (Sorry if this shiet is weird yall)

Probably tougher to do so if your case is sitting under your desk and far away, but mine is like on top of my table so its easier :D

    Need Monitor Help ASAP

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 11:19 AM PST

i recently upgraded my pc and it currently has an i7-8700k and a RTX 2080. i took my old pc and gave it one of my less fortunate friends that has always wanted to PC gams but couldn't afford it, instead of parting out for a monitor. i'm only 16 and the way i build my setups is by doing payment plans with my grandpa who is currently passing away from blood cancer. so i'm looking to upgrade so he can see my setup one last time as he has been a pc gamer his whole life and has supported me since i was born.

my current monitor is 60hz and like 6ms. i need an upgrade. i'm on a budget because i don't make much money as a kid but i want something that will make my pc worth it and my grandfathers next visit worth it. any suggestions?

    i appreciate any tips!

Happy New Year! I done goofed. mITX PC won't power on after attempting to install new drive. Any help much appreciated.

Happy New Year all! Not my first rodeo with building or troubleshooting PCs, but I done goofed and am stumped this time, any help would be appreciated!

TL;DR -- attempted to install another SSD in my mITX build, and after doing so, PC won't power on or POST.

Issue Behaviour - Power light blinks just briefly when plugging PC back in, and also when hitting power button (on both case and mobo.) Clicks as if system were to boot up, and fans just start to spin (less than a second) and then stop. Seems like a short kind of issue. There appear to be two lights on the MOBO (none on the LED diagnostic readout on the Stinger) - one is white, the other appears amber.

    Here's my thinking:

    • Everything was working just fine before I tore into it, so it's probably user error.
    • Almost certain it's not a GPU, RAM, or SATA/HDD issue, as it should still POST
    • Symptoms seem like a short

    Things I've tried:

    • reseating mobo on standoffs and insuring nothing under MOBO that could cause a short
    • reset CMOS from both IO button as well as battery
    • cleared BIOS profile in MOBO from button
    • tried booting with RAM in all possible configurations
    • tried booting sans GPU and HDDs
    • reseated every cable on motherboard (sans taking cooler off CPU - thing's a PITA) (basically rebuilt the whole thing)
    • ensured all PSU connections were firmly secured to both PSU and MOBO
    • triple checked the IO connections to MOBO from case (although, not an issue with that since the power button on the mobo won't work either)

    Preliminary Conclusions

I've tried to be thorough with both my troubleshooting steps as well as this write up. I think it's either

    1. a power supply issue -- seems weird as it was working fine before I added the SSD
    2. a motherboard issue -- also seems weird for reason above
    3. some kind of short with case or other component?

I only have one power supply so I don't have another to test with. I've basically rebuilt the whole thing twice trying to troubleshoot (only thing I haven't done is separate CPU from cooler and take it off the socket). Is there a test I can run on my existing PSU without another one? I've heard of the paperclip method, but the main connection from my PSU to MOBO does not have coloured wires, so I don't know offhand which one is ground.

Next step would be to log a ticket to Corsair (PSU manufacturer) and/or EVGA (MOBO manufacturer). Was hoping to avoid that if it was something stupid on my end though.

Also, my next rig I'm not going to go mITX, whenever that is. Size is great, but man it's a royal pain to work in. Frustratingly so.

Any other thoughts or advice is much appreciated. Let me know if any questions.

Thanks to anyone who read through this, and happy new year!

    Question about new SSD

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:49 PM PST

I have a new SSD to put my OS on and I was wondering what the best way to go about putting the OS on the SSD is. I was hoping to clone it (even though I know a fresh install is better) but it the samsung cloning software wants me to clone all the HDD contents to the SSD and the SSD is smaller. Another option I was wondering about is, can I install the OS to the SSD and replug in the HDD without having to install all the contents on the HDD again? Thanks for the help!

Bricked my RX 580 trying to restore original bios

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:07 PM PST

I bought a used Sapphire Pulse RX 580 off of ebay and I assume it had been mined on because it was locked at 1200 mhz and was heating up to high 70's low 80s when playing PUBG and R6. I decided to try and flash the bios and now my pc will not boot. I have 2 PC's and both of them have a red light labeled "VGA" on the motherboard so they aren't recognizing the card. I have been looking online and tried the following methods to no avail:

    • create DOS boot USB and use AtiFlash again
    • use integrated graphics and use CMD to access AtiFlash
    • take the card out and put it back in
    • literally used a paperclip to connect 2 ends of the BIOS chip on the card (this actually made the card recognizable in the AtiFlash program)

What's strange is that when I go into CMD and use AtiFlash, it recognizes my GPU, says PASS AND shows the BIOS version, but when I boot my computer to use PCIe instead of Integrated graphics, it doesn't start up. In device manager under display adapters my 580 is listed with a yellow triangle so it's still not working. Is my GPU just a brick at this point or is there any method I've missed to try and restore it? Thanks

Upgrade piece by piece or new build?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 01:38 PM PST

I built a mid-level gaming rig about 3 years now, upgraded the CPU once but now am stuck between upgrading the GPU and doing the mobo/CPU/GPU together.

If doing the latter, I'd probably look to sell some components but would probably swap out one by one rather than do a fresh build. In BFV/PUGB, I run Low/Medium so HD would be nice. Budget can be up to ~$700, here are my current spec's:

    CPU - Intel - Core i5-7500 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor

    MoBo - Gigabyte - GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

    RAM - G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-2400 Memory

    Storage - Samsung - 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

    Storage - Seagate - Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

GPU - EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3 GB SC GAMING Video Card

    PSU - EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Looking for some feedback on my first build

    Posted: 01 Jan 2019 04:46 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

I have indeed read the rules in the sidebar.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. My intended use of this build is for office work, music production and editing, and gaming.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

As far as gaming goes, I would like to not have to worry about playing most games at ultra settings. I do not plan on overclocking, so I understand that this will only get me so far, but I am aiming at getting at least 70fps on 1440p for most games.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My ballpark budget is about $1650. I could be convinced to go to about $1750, but I would like to save up some and put it towards a better monitor as well.

In what country are you purchasing your parts? I am purchasing my parts from the United States. I have a fair amount of Amazon credit to use towards this, so I am keen on picking up at least one of either the CPU or GPU from Amazon.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bMmMxG

Provide any additional details you wish below. Ultimately, I am looking for general feedback for the build. This is my first build, and I'm pretty excited to finally have a good PC. After doing some research, I think I've mostly put together a build that I'm excited to start buying. I generally prefer Intel, as the friends that are helping me actually build it are much more familiar with Intel's chipsets. I am still debating about whether to go with a 1060 6GB or go further with a 1070. Any feedback or suggestions, specifically about cases, cpu coolers, and GPU's, would be much appreciated.

Hey guys, I currently play League as well as some open world survival games such as 7 Days to Die, The Forest, Rust, etc. on low settings thanks to my 6ish year old pre-built I'm on now. I've always wanted to get into ARK, but it's unplayable even on low settings on this rig. I mainly want a rock solid pc for the next several years for those games in addition to WoW Classic, Warcraft 3 and possibly Diablo 3. I don't have a set timeline but I would probably start buying components as they came on sale once I finalize what I'm looking for in my build. My budget is pretty fluid depending on what it'd get me, but I'd like to stay near 1,000 USD.

Having said all that, I have zero experience building pcs or selecting components. Hell, a couple weeks ago I couldn't have told you the difference between a cpu and a gpu. I've been researching near daily and feel like I have a decent grasp at what I'm looking at and getting myself into, but I'm cerainly no expert so any input would be crazy helpful.

This build isn't all that creative as it's essentially the "Great AMD Gaming Build" from pcpartpicker with a few tweaks. Basically I'm leaning towards a mostly black with red highlight build, but I could honestly care less if there are cheaper/higher quality/better meshing parts that don't fit that scheme. My biggest concern is one component limiting another, such as the GPU I substituted from the PCPP build. I'm pretty open to any suggestions regarding changes but I'll throw a few things out right off the bat.

CPU: I seem to gravitate towards AMD the more I read about both brands and it sounds like the value/performance ratio swings that way.

MOBO: Honestly, just seemed to be a popular pick from a lot of PCPP completed builds and had solid reviews. I do not know what I'm looking for here.

RAM: Essentially just the cheapest DDR4-3200 I could find.

GPU: Another component I saw in a few builds with good reviews but I'm highly open to suggestions.

Case: Very, VERY open to case ideas. I went for this case on the look and cross referenced some Amazon reviews to ensure it was at least decent, but again, I'm a noob. I have no idea how these componenets are actually going to fit in this thing. Any insight here would be huge for me. As long as its not beige with baby blue trim I'll consider it. I have to look at the damn thing after all.

PSU: I actually had the same psu in 750W for this build originally, but I wasn't sure if that was overkill so I downgraded it to this one. Honestly no idea here. I've heard that 50W over your build is fine, but I've also heard you should go significantly higher in anticipation of upgrades. I'm certainly not against the latter, but again, noob.

I have a mouse, keyboard and headphones and will be buying a new freesync monitor with Christmas gift cards so I didn't include any of that in the build.

Feel free to comment/upgrade/suggest anything I didn't mention.

Seriously though, thanks for any and all feedback!

I have around $550 for a new motherboard, CPU and GPU

    Hey.

So currently I have an i3-4160 and a GTX 960. I have around $550 to upgrade those 2 components (so I'll need to upgrade the motherboard too). I can extend my budget a little more if needed.

I use my computer mostly for gaming, I have 8GB of RAM that I can upgrade at a later date.

What should I consider getting? Should I wait for the next NVIDIA graphics?

    Thanks!
