Phone charging: best practices & myths

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:43 PM PST

    Hi all!

I just got a new phone I want to settle a couple of questions that appeared out of nowhere.

First of all, what are the best practices when charging the phone? I have read stuff like that I shouldn't really let the battery get all the way to 5% or so, but instead charge it when it's at 30%. Also, I should try to disconnect the phone from the charger before reaching 100%.

Is this true? Is charging multiple times for shorter periods better than charging fewer times for longer periods?

What about charging at night? Should I avoid leaving my phone on the charger the whole night long?
What about the quick charging? I have heard that those aren't really good for the battery and that they shouldn't be always used. Is there any truth here? Many phone manufacturers sell their phones without the quick chargers...

How to keep the battery in the best possible condition, given some normal phone usage?

    Thanks! :)

It's there an app that will let me use my phone as a second screen for my pc with good color accuracy?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:06 PM PST

Flagship phones have super good screens, so I was thinking about using my phone screen for color grading videos. I know there are some apps that let me use my phone as a second monitor for my PC, but I don't know how well they are going to work and if they'll be accurate or not.

Is it still worth it to get a pre-owned S7 Edge?

I got a new smartphone, and it's full of bloatware (and probably spyware as well). What do I do?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:59 AM PST

I was thinking of doing a clean Android install - but apparently that is different from phone to phone? How do I do that? Should I?

Also some older threads on Reddit say that the stock Android is pretty clunky. Is that true?

    Help?

edit: per the rules - it's a cheap Meizu phone.

Unlocked AT&T LG V20 (LG-H910) on Cricket has not received 8.0 update

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:06 AM PST

So I bought my phone a year ago from Amazon. It was unlocked. The update to Android 8 for this specific device was put out a few months ago according to the ATT support page (linked below.) I didn't receive the update.

I have read articles saying it may not get the update because it's unlocked. Can anyone verify this so I can borrow an AT&T Sim card or provide another solution?

    Trying to decide between phones

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:26 AM PST

    Hi.

Wife and I are upgrading our phones. Currently have Samsung J3 phones. Looking to spend around $200 each.

    Trying to decide between

    Huawei Mate SE 4 gig/64gb

    Honor 7x

    Nokia 6.0 2018

Looking for a decent camera. Past that, neither of us are power users. We use messenger, Instagram and web browsing. I use a reddit app (boost) and listen to podcasts all day.

    Thanks!

Best way to stream android games to twitch?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 08:11 PM PST

Hello, I was wondering if any of you guys know about mirroring/streaming android games onto a pc. I've tried multiple mirroring apps, including AirServer and AirDroid but they were all too laggy to stream through, say OBS on twitch or youtube. I'm looking to create a professional stream, similar to Molts or Nickatnytes. If any of you guys are familiar with doing so, It would be greatly appreciated if you could help me out!

    Thanks!

Dark theme on phone app v26?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 12:33 PM PST

I can't seem to get the dark theme toggle switch to display on v26 of the phone app. I sideloaded it onto my Pixel XL since the previous version was v25. Display options only has Sort by and Name format. Similarly, I see no options anywhere for Call Screen.

I already forced stop and cleared cache.

    Any thoughts?

    Music turns off while browsing.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:28 AM PST

This is something that's actually been happening for a while now. I'm on a LG K10 using VLC for music and Chrome to browse. Anytime I try listening to music while browsing, VLC just shuts off after a minute. Same thing if I'm listening to Bandcamp. Anybody have any idea what's up with that? It's just really annoying. I can run the Facebook app and listen to music with no problem. Only happens with Chrome.

Google annoying me with notices about crap I don't care about, and telling me to do stuff I don't want to do. (Moto G6 Play)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:49 PM PST

On the lock screen, there's always a notice about the score of some football game or hockey game. I'll check scores when I feel like it—please leave me alone. And Google Play Store always has the little green indicator dot, and on the lock screen, there's always a message saying "Complete setup by installing apps." I don't want any more apps. I like the ones I have, and if I want more, I'll find them myself. How do I get this shit to stop suggesting things to me and stop showing me sports scores and generally being a meddlesome piece of shit?

Possible to use Socks5 for specific app?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:50 AM PST

I'm just wondering if it's possible to use a Socks5 proxy only for a specific app, whilst being on a non rooted device? If so, how would I go about doing it? I'd rather not go down the VPN route if possible since it would put all my traffic through rather than just the one app.

Device is on the latest build of Android Pie.

    Thanks

I can't connect to vpns over mobile data, any have suggestions?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:55 PM PST

I've used two vpns, Nord and Express, and they work on wifi but not mobile data. It keeps trying to connect but never does. I talked to the VPN support but their suggestions didn't work and I talked with Sprint and what they said also didn't work. Also my phone is a Moto e4 plus.

New Essential Phone vs used Pixel 2 XL Which should my mom get in December 2018?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 01:10 PM PST

My mom is getting tired of her Nexus 6p's problems. I was looking into a used Pixel 2 XL due to the price of used ones going down with the Pixel 3 out. But I am scared of the quality control issues that the Pixel 2 XL suffers from, plus it seems like Google's quality control in general has gone down over the years. I was thinking of getting her an Essential Phone since I like mine. But I worried about the company's future , especially since we want the latest Android OS updates. She also wants to know how Verizon's signal performs on either phone. If we go with Essential, it will be new. If we go with the pixel 2 xl, it will be used. Thanks

Question about changing the aspect ratio on S2 Tab

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:48 PM PST

I am wondering whether it is possible to change the aspect ratio on my S2 tablet from 4:3 to 16:9. I tried using some basic resolution/ratio changing apps, but they had no effect, and I think I may need to root my device. I've rooted several android phone before, but does anyone have experience rooting the S2 tablet, or changing its aspect ratio in another way?

To give a demonstration of what I'm trying to achieve, a game I am currently enjoying a lot (Chinese version of Arena of Valor) currently looks like this (screenshot taken directly on my tablet), and I want to change the aspect ratio so that it automatically zooms out a bit and looks like this (screenshot taken on my phone, then viewed on my tablet and screenshotted again).

I know this is a pretty specific desire, but would really appreciate any tips folks may have. Thanks so much!

    Hardware, software, or the network?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 02:53 PM PST

With a oneplus one that my mom has, a lot of times when I call it it will be silent for a good 30+ seconds then go to voicemail. She also says that people sometimes wont receive her texts-which I confirmed by texting my phone from hers. Now the confusing part (to me) is that sometimes it works perfectly normal. I thought it might be spotty reception but we're both on T-mobile and holding her phone and mine (also a oneplus one) side by side shows comparable signal (displayed in dBm) in the same places. What gives?

Edit: About an hour ago I sent a message to my phone from hers and didn't receive it. Now I called her phone, the call went through, and when it did I received that text from an hour ago. Interesting...

Any way to prevent an app going full screen and hiding the navigation and notification bars?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 02:36 PM PST

Some media apps decide to go full screen and hide the navigation and notification bars even when Chromecasting, which is silly. Any way to prevent this? Yes, I've contacted the developers, who are not so interested...

I'm rooted if that's any help.

Any way to lock down an Android tablet for unassisted use?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST

I want to give my father in-law, who lives in assisted living, a tablet for Christmas. The thing is, I only want him to be able to take pictures and videos, view pictures and videos, and listen to preloaded music. I also want to make sure he can't connect to the internet on this device, nor do I even want the ability to view/change settings for him. I see I can create a restricted user and switch it over to his account, but if the device gets turned off or rebooted, it requires me to log in with my pin/password to get back in before I can change the user back to his restricted account. I live too far away from him to make this viable. Anyway I can accomplish what I'm looking to do?
