CAT6 rolls come in various price points... Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:14 PM PST I'll be rewiring/dropping additional points in the home over the holidays during renovated. I'm looking at the rolls 1000ft/305m on ebay and see various price points. The cable will be running inside the drywalls and attic. Whats the difference between these 3 and what should I look out for in when buying a roll to guarantee the 'cable' is capable of 1Gbps (future proof 10Gbps for <50m runs). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 08:43 AM PST Is there a site to visit to buy bulk Ethernet cable and male jacks to cut custom lengths of cable. I've got to make a very long run through my attic. I've looked in a few areas and can only find precut lengths with the Jack already installed. Maybe I'm entering the wrong terminology? Is there a preferred spec I should look for for the best speeds? Which Mesh router to pick for a 800 sq ft house? Posted: 02 Dec 2018 08:25 PM PST Hi all! Long time lurker here but am looking to replace my rusty old Linksys EA2000 router in order to accommodate the new fiber 400mbps line coming into the home. I took a look at the following: Linksys Velop WHW0302 Modular Wi-Fi Mesh System (AC4400) - 2 of them NetGear Orbi RBK50 (AC3000) - 2 of them Amplifi HD Mesh (AC1750) - 1 router 2 mesh points extenders Not too sure about the AC portion but which would be best for my situation? Many thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 08:09 PM PST I am looking for some guidance regarding my home network that has been playing up since I got Sky Q installed. Before i have to call an engineer in to sort it out, maybe someone with the know-how can help me out. So last week we got our Sky TV package upgraded to Sky Q so we now have a new hub for everything, the internet hasn't changed as we were already on sky fibre. The old hub we had (SR101) ran how the network was set up for years without issues. Now with the Sky Q hub when I game i seem to get high packet loss, on pingplotter is says the default ip / SkyRouter.Home is getting packet loss after a few seconds of starting a test. I have also noticed when I try a speed test for the internet the speed varies quite a lot. Normal speeds i get around 20-25 download but when i do tests sometimes it's fine but other times is down to 10 - 15. Sometimes into single digits. The Wi-Fi dongle i use to connect is quite old now (around 8 years old) so it could be that no liking the dual band wireless that the new Sky Q Hub provides, however i don't want to go throwing money away on new stuff if it works fine as it is. As far as i know it shouldn't be effected by dual band as it will just stick on the 2.4ghz channel but i could be wrong. As for other devices connected to the wifi, due to the new hub only having two ethernet ports and one if them is needed from the bt openreach modem for the internet. Only the downstairs pc is hard wired, so this means the pc upstairs that has the issue is wireless. Along with two phones, wireless printer, the main sky q and a sky q mini. However even if i disconnect the sky q mini and the phone from the network thats in the same room as the wireless pc it doesn't fix the problem. The PC always has a full 4 bar signal at all times, so i don't think its interference from other devices. Any help or things to try would help very much, Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Modem + Router for 500mbps internet Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:05 PM PST My family is changing ISPs soon and decided not to rent the usual modem + router from them, and instead purchase our own. Any recommendations for what to purchase? [link] [comments] |
Thinking of replacing Linksys e3000 with TP-Link Archer c9. Should I get a performance increase? Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:14 AM PST I think the answer to my question is yes, but I wanted to check to make sure. https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-AC1900-Smart-Wireless-Router/dp/B00PDLRHFW Open to suggestions. Can I use my PC as a access point? Posted: 02 Dec 2018 08:38 AM PST So my router with built in AP was destroyed by lighting strike. TP-LINK is sending me a free replacement but warranty process could take a week or two. My modem has one internet port which I use for my main PC. I have many other TVs in house and systems that require wireless connections. Is there anyway to broadcast SSID with my PC? I have a wireless NIC [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:16 PM PST Recently upgraded to a USG 3P, US-8-60W, and UAP-AC-Pro. Have verizon Fios. Do not have IPS or DPI on, but still getting up to 250 up/down in speed tests. Am I doing something wrong? Any tips to troubleshoot? [link] [comments] |
Ran networking cable in my house for the first time. Keystones not working. Need help. Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:03 PM PST I ran three runs of Cat6 cable thru my attic this weekend. On two of the runs, I terminated them into cat6 keystone jacks following the 'B' wiring diagram. The other run was male on both ends. Here is a link to pictures of the runs including jacks and plugs. pictures The runs with keystones do not work. I'm not sure if I didn't punch down correctly or what. To problem solve, I removed the keystone jacks and installed a male end on the run and then it worked fine. On the males, I used the same wiring 'B'. If looking at the top of the male with the tab, left to right I have: 1. white/orange 2. orange 3. white/green 4. blue 5. white/blue 6. green 7. white/brown 8. brown Any ideas on the terminating with male ends allows the cable to work? Did I terminate the females incorrectly? [link] [comments] |
Comcast Modem/Router Switch, trying to get connection in furthest room. Any tips? Posted: 02 Dec 2018 08:46 PM PST So currently I have my rented Comcast modem/router connected out in the living room. About 60 feet away in another room, I have another netgear router connected because the the wi-fi in that room and the room right next to it have bad/spotty wi-fi, so I had to connect a router there (Farthest room I'd say is only about 75 feet away max from the main Comcast modern/router, so I don't know whats up with the poor connection from the main comcast router in the living room) I want to stop renting out the comcast modem and buy my own Arris modem/router. However I'm trying to just buy the modem version, so I don't have to spend the extra cash to buy the modem/router model. So I was wondering if there was any tips on how to improve the connection in that room? I would like it to be so I just have the Arris modem outside along with the netgear router along with it and not need it in the room furthest away. Any tips? I do have a TP-Link power line wi-fi adapter from amazon that I use to use on my PS4, that I still have but thats for wired I believe? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:40 PM PST I got a Linksys router over the weekend and it seems to work fine. The particular router I bought got good reviews on Amazon and Best Buy but it seems that many people on reddit are not fans of this brand. Should I be concerned?? Do they have a bad history? Help with separate personal router setup in home Posted: 02 Dec 2018 06:38 PM PST We (roommate and I) got a pretty decent 50Mbps connection recently and we share it from the one antenna-less modem/router combo we rent from the IPS. It's not that bad but pretty much all my roommate uses the internet for is streaming youtube videos on autoplay 24/7. I use the internet for general use, gaming, and streaming videos so the constant hitch isn't fun. I want to have my own personal router in my room which (correct me if this wouldn't work) I would connect to the modem via a long ethernet cord. I'm not sure how much connecting to a separate router would increase my own speed (wifi & cat5) but that's why I came here. Would it be worth it? Given that it is, what would be a good cheap router to get or what specs should I look for? [link] [comments] |
What cables to run for modem feed Posted: 02 Dec 2018 12:03 PM PST I'm relocating my modem and networking gear to a different place in my house and trying to figure out what wires to bring in for the supply to the modem. The rest is no problem. I'm currently on a cable ISP (300/20) but used to have DSL which I remember ran on "bonded pairs". The cable is easy, I'll run an RG6 coax from my infeed box just outside the garage. For bonded can I use a single Cat6 to the phone line box or should I put a pair of them together? The DSL offering company is also rolling out a "fibre" connection (300/300) but I think it is housed in our telecom room (we live in a townhouse) and not fibre direct to the house in our neighbourhood. Should I run a fibre wire at the same time just in case or leave it? [link] [comments] |
3000 kb/sec going down to 800kb/sec in game? Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:22 PM PST So whenever I attempt to play black ops 4, my connection speed goes down drastically. I get into a game, play fine for maybe 2 minutes, and then suddenly get too much lag to attempt to play. I understand that 3mb/sec is not a good speed, but it works normally to play until now, when the speed is throttled after a few minutes. I am using ethernet btw. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:43 AM PST I've been researching putting a time block on the internet access at home, specifically for shutting down playstation gaming at 9pm. I have a netgear router that i got from charter and i know it has settings to schedule blocks on internet access, however if someone is already streaming or gaming it keeps the connection going. So my question is, if i buy one of those outlet timers, like the ones people use for Christmas lights, and set it to shut off at 9pm every night and on at 5am every morning, will i do lasting damage to my wifi router? Modem channels for gig internet Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:29 AM PST I was told by my ISP last night that I only have 17 out if 32 downstream channels and only 3 out if 8 channels for upstream. They told me to call arris and have them open up more channels because gig speeds require 32 channels. I called arris and they said they have nothing to do with that, the modem is provisioned by my ISP and they control how many channels are used by the signal. So I called my ISP and they are sending a tech out today to change my wiring from the pole. Can anyone give me some advice as to what to tell the tech when they come today? My internet connection keeps dropping 4 or more times in a day and I want to get this fixed as soon as possible. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 01:26 PM PST So I have a Ubee UBC1307 cable modem/router that has this weird issue where it randomly dumps any device (usually using the most data) off the network usually for 2-3 minutes, and then allows it back onto the network if I manually put it back on the network. I can't figure out why it does this, I've tried resetting it and even digging through all the router settings to check if it has any kind of data cap on it and it doesn't. If anyone has any insight I would be super appreciative. [link] [comments] |
Vizio Sound bar / TP Link Smart Outlet / Chromecast / Google Home Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:09 PM PST Friends, I'm trying to integrate my system. I've got a Google Home and Chromecast in my living room. Works great to turn on my Samsung TV and use streaming services with verbal commands. I also have an older Vizio sound bar I always use when watching TV (with two side speakers and subwoofer) - not sure what model number, as it was a gift. But it's connected with an optical cable and does not have an HDMI port. I plugged the power cord into a TP Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug so that I could tell the Google Home to "Turn on the sound bar" when I want to watch TV and not need the sound bar remote to do so. I've googled the heck out of this and can't figure out a workaround. One feed recommended I turn off the Eco Mode for the sound bar which I've done. Once the sound bar is on, giving the voice command works great to shut it off, but then when I turn it on again, the sound bar is just on standby and not actually powered on and functioning. I could just not use the Smart Plug and leave the sound bar on 24/7 but that seems like a waste of energy. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
My own modem/router for Xfinity internet Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:23 PM PST I'm getting Xfinity blast internet in my new apartment, but I'd rather not pay the monthly $11 for their gateway. Any advice as to which modem/router combo y'all have bought or think is better? [link] [comments] |
Add Ethernet and switch to existing network panel Posted: 02 Dec 2018 12:21 PM PST Hi Reddit! Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I have a Leviton network panel with 8 Cat6 cables going to rj45 wall ports. I want to feed Ethernet to 3 of these ports. Based on a bunch of reading here on this awesome home networking subreddit, I'm thinking I can accomplish this with the following:
Using the tone generator I'll identify the cables that run to the wall ports I want to use, pull those wires out of the phone module and install them into the new data module with the punch down tool. Then I'll use patch cables to plug into the new switch. For someone who's never done this before, does that sound correct and doable? Any changes you'd make to the above? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:47 PM PST I recently became a member of an association and they have a club house of sorts where members can come hang out. We call this club house "the hut". When I joined 6 months ago the hut had a wireless router setup that got slow internet but it was usable. Apparently one of our members tried "increasing the speed of internet" and completely broke the entire thing. I consider myself fairly tech saavy but this is beyond me. I am used to a cable that comes from the wall, to a modem, then from the modem to a router. Here are pictures of the connections: https://www.imgur.com/a/vkQqMgK The green cable is spliced into a brown box with a host of numbers on it. It appears the cable used to be a cat 5 cable at some point but the only two wires that are spliced into the brown box are the solid green and the green and white. If they are attached to the correct spots on this box, I have no idea. The end of this cable has the solid green and green and white wires attached to a standard phone plug and then into an enable-it 860 pro. This is well beyond me and at this point I am looking for some direction on how to proceed in order to get this working. Any ideas would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:19 PM PST I currently get 170 down with Xfinity, but still have trouble streaming HQ content sometimes. I have some HD movies on Plex that can't stream. My building just got AT&T fiber. Am I better off getting fiber at 100 down? [link] [comments] |
Help picking the right switch (24GBE/802.3ad support) Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:33 AM PST I am hoping someone can help me find a switch that meets my needs. I'm looking for one with 24 GBE ports and support for IEEE 802.3ad link agg support with a high backplane to pass large amounts of traffic. I don't need PoE or really any management except for the agg support but I have no problem configuring a switch (I do that all day at work lol). Can someone recommend a good switch? Anyone know if my modem/router works with Fios? Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:00 AM PST Hey guys, a while back with the help of this sub I picked out a modem/router and it drastically improved my speeds. With an old modem/router combo unit I was getting 10-30mb down on a 250 mb connection. After the upgrade, I consistently get 290mb down. so, im moving soon and my new place has verizon fios already set up. I dont know if its ethernet or coax. I'm wondering if my Arris SURFboard SB8200 modem and my NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 router will work with verizon? I assume the router is no problem, and I just called verizon and the woman said the modem is compatible. she asked if it has ethernet ports, and if it does then it will work. Can the ethernet ports on my modem be used for a connection to the ONT? I also gave her the model number of the modem and she said its good but I just want to make sure. thanks in advance.
