ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501GI or ROG Zephyrus M GM501GS?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:20 AM PST

Hi everybody! I'm looking for a bit of help with what it says on the tin:

I want to replace my 7 y/o ROG G750JW for Christmas with a considerably lighter model since work has me travel and live in hotels every other week. I've been very satisfied with Asus' products in the past, so please don't recommend me other brands - I'm aware that I can get similar machines for less cash. c: Not sure if it's important or not, but I'm from Germany!

The "special" keyboard layout of the GI doesn't sway me too much: what's important to me is both the cooling and, of course, the overall performance. I'm mostly using my laptop for WoW (progress raiding), Overwatch and other games like ARK, Witcher 3 and other MMOs. I always have streams or movies open at the side and occasionally work with Photoshop or blender.

In the reviews I've seen, the GI appears to stay cooler, which (I think?) could be the 1080's MaxQ design. Originally, I wanted to go with the GS because the specs aren't too different apart from the price (roughly 500€), but then I heard that it runs considerably louder and that I might have to replace its SSHD (1TB + 512 GB SSD) so I have 2 SSDs instead. Would I even notice a very big difference then? My current one runs with 2 as well.

The GI, however, doesn't have a second slot to begin with (runs w/ a 512 GB SSD). I might end up having to upgrade that as well for more storage: I'm saying might because I only use around 300 GB storage on my current setup.

My knowledge sadly doesn't reach much farther than being able to tell which specs, in their raw state, are the "better" ones. What do you think is the lesser evil of the two? Is there a noticeable difference between the laptops or can I safely settle with the cheaper one? I do have the funds for both, but if they don't differ too much from each other, I'd be happy to save the money.

Thank you so much for your time!

ASUS VivoBook S15 S510UN or ASUS ZENBOOK UX430UN or other ?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:05 AM PST

So im looking into buying a latop on christmas. My budget is around 800-900 euros.

Looking for a decently sized (not too bulky) portable Laptop. Primary use would be programmng as well as everyday and school use. Don't need it to game, but it would't hurt.

Looking to upgrade my current laptop ($700-900 range)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:54 PM PST

Hi, I currently have a 3-year-old ASUS ROG G511JX with the following specs:

    i7-4720HQ @ 2.6GHz

    12GB RAM

    GTX 950M

    1TB SSD

I'm thinking of selling that laptop to a friend, it's in a heavily used state but works perfectly fine, other than the battery needing a replacement. As the title says, I'm looking for a replacement for this.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $600-900 range. Would rather keep it around 800 or lower. Purchasing in the US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Only a tiny bit, don't want a humongous 6kg laptop of course

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CS Senior student, so I'll be running programming stuff that's not too demanding. I will be doing a lot of gaming, primarily Destiny 2, Diablo 3, Black Ops 4, Fortnite, and any other fps games that catch my eye (maybe WoW if it gets good again 🤔)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I want to run Destiny 2, BO4, Fortnite and FPS games at constant 60+ FPS in any setting. I can manage this on my current PC (except for BO4) on 720p res and low settings for fortnite and D2

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really just the standard for today's laptops

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If possible, could any of you guys tell me a price range I should consider selling my current laptop? Keeping in mind there was a 1TB Samsung SSD upgrade done to it, and it needs a battery replacement.

$600-$800 or best offer - General Use and Gaming

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:54 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** USA, could go up to $1k but looking for $600-$800 range.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** 256SSD or more, 2.5ghz or more.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Nada, just needs to be a laptop.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** WIndows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 15" or bigger

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** General use, WoW, Civ, few other games on Steam, nothing crazy.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** WoW, Civ, Half Life 2? Nothing crazy in mind.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Solid build quality would be a big plus, don't want it to break easily but it's not going to be a Nokia.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Just the SSD requirement, 256 or over, and 2.5Ghz or over. Had a Acer Aspire 5 at 1.6 Ghz and it felt slower than I wanted. Also looking for something with good cooling or ventilation, don't want overheating issues. I found this laptop, wondering if there are better options out there.

Laptop mostly being used for media consumption

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:06 AM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

I'd like to keep it below $1200 but am willing to go a bit above for the perfect laptop. I'm in the states

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

A 2 and 1 would be ideal since I plan to read manga with the machine. Willing to sacrifice some battery life if it gets me better specs.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?*

    Not important at all

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Most intensive software I'd be running is Media Player Classic. Would love to be able to use MadVR with it as well.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Maplestory and visual novels are going to be the games I play on here.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

A great display is the most important thing to me. I don't need anything above 1080p but not against 1440/4k if it gets me a better display.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

15", USA, $500-800 range but open to suggestions

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 02:14 AM PST

    Hello,

I am at a point where I would like to upgrade both my phone and laptop, my phone is a work phone and laptop is getting old but still functions as browser.

The two devices are Iphone 7 and Mid-2012 MBP. I had a S6 at one point and an older/newer then MBP windows laptop, so brand/OS don't really bother me. I had thought at one point I would like to upgrade the MBP with everything but the price is similar to a newer laptop and I wouldn't get anything new like screen, os, etc. I am open to buying something used/refurb and upgrading ssd/ram.

I would like to get something that compliments each other... for example, if I get a nicer laptop then my phone can be on the more budget side as I don't have a need for anything crazy. I know this is SAL but I am hoping that narrowing down the laptop will help me with the phone as there are a few that I like but maybe there is a better option price/options wise when I decide on the laptop.

EDIT: I may be getting a PS4 if my friends all decide to get one as we play PUBG on phone and another game on computer but they want to start playing some games together on there, just a side note if you have any suggestions that fall short because of gaming or something like that...

Total budget and country of purchase: Maximum would be $1000 for both, USA, I would like to spend less though to leave a little room for the phone, something like L:800 P:200 but if there is a good laptop for less I will gladly go for that one

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply: Normal laptop, NO touchscreen, Best specs for money

How important is weight and thinness to you: Weight is more important then size, but specs are the most important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux: This one is a slight problem but I prefer Mac and Windows. I haven't had a laptop with W10 yet so I would entertain the possibility but I also would like some advice on older gen windows vs modding W10 to limit the intrusiveness it has

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A: None but 15 seems like a good spot to center around

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run: Normal gaming nothing crazy(PUBG and LOL type games), I do want good specs for video/photo editing as I am getting back into film/photography and need something to help with that

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want: Ref above, but nothing special just the normal games people play and I can always lower settings, I don't need it to run the newest at Ultra 4k but good graphics/screen would be nice for gaming and editing

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad): Good keyboard, good trackpad, I can use a mouse if its a deal breaker, also some decent options in USB/SD inputs but its nothing to stress about, I can always use a multiport, I do enjoy a good build quality as my phone is Iphone 7 all black model and I have to say it's the best phone I have ever owned in terms of appearance

Don't need fingerprint, touchscreen, or anything fancy like that

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion: I put a few words up top, so if you guys have any extra questions feel free to ask

Cheapest laptop for studying with good build quality

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:58 AM PST

First of all, I'm not even sure if my plan is great. I am currently a student studying medicine in UniDeb(Hungary) and I travel back for 2 months to North America every month.

I currently own an MSI gaming laptop (GP62 6QF Leopard Pro) which I'm quite happy with (apart from the plastic casing it feels gross but I can deal with it) but once it kicks the bucket I was thinking I could invest in a Micro ATX PC and a cheap high quality laptop made for studying.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Not completely sure, the cheaper the better. I could purchase this both in Canada and in mainland Europe (anywhere near Hungary)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Form factor isn't too important since I've had a 15+ inch laptop for the last 3 years and I managed. A good battery life would be one of my priorities.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important as long as the build quality is good.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any apart from Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12in+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, just general things like word/chrome but I also don't want it to freak out if I have too many tabs open or a huge PDF

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming, I'm planning to do that on my MicroATX

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? As long as the keyboard isn't stiff I'm good. Build quality is preferred but isn't a must. I would quite enjoy also if I could use a stylus on the screen for note taking or directly writing on the screen. (now that I think about it maybe I would be better off with a tablet but they're pretty pricey.)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Do you guys MicroATX + dedicated study laptop is a good idea? Would you consider a waste of money? Would I be better off with a small tablet ?

Also open to alternatives. Have to ship to Cyprus

My initial budget was 1000 Euros but I had to push it

Ideally I wanted a 8750H with 1060 but it seems to be more expensive. I also gave up waiting for the prices to drop as they appear to be holding well and it seems that a small saving is not worth a long wait

Slim laptop for University - Australia

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 01:32 AM PST

Total budget and country of purchase - $1500-2500 and Australia

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply - Battery life isn't a deciding factor, long as it can survive an hour long commute to univerity. - Specifications are important though.

How important is weight and thinness to you? - Quite important, I've been looking at mostly Ultrabooks.

Which OS do you require? - Always owned Windows, but not afraid to switch sides.

Do you have a preferred screen size? - 13" to 15" which is mostly in the Ultrabook size range.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - Little bit of everything; Adobe Photoshop, Premiere, Microsoft Office, Civilization 5 and lastly million 'n' one tabs on Chrome.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - Not looking for amazing FPS on new upcoming titles. But good framerates on older and less graphically intense games.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - Good keyboard is a must. - Build quality is very important, I'm a sucker for premium feel and finish. - I like touch-screen, but not a deal-breaker. - Overheating is a pet peeve, a laptop on the cooler side is preferable.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - Been looking around myself and hve found a few candidates, though this will be my first laptop so I'm a little amateur on my choices.

    • Asus Zenbook Pro (That touchpad made screen)
    • Asus Zenbook S
    • Acer Swift 5
    • Razer Blade Stealth 13.3 (Found a really good deal, saving $400)

So please, help me out here. Cheers everyone 😁

Looking for a lightweight laptop that will last me a few years. I am a college student, who enjoys working in quiet spaces and I enjoy moving around campus. A light laptop with low fan noise and some power to run the up and coming triple A titles would be great. I would need the laptop to run multiple software at the same time such as running a game engine with adobe applications. Any feedback is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Looking for a good gaming Laptop for around 1k

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:50 PM PST

I'm looking to buy a decent gaming laptop. I've saved up about 1k and I've been looking for decent laptops on the internet but I confess I don't know a whole lot about computers, so I don't know which ones would be the best value.

It would be nice for the laptop to be versatile as well, for I plan on using it when I go back to college next year.

School Laptop With a Good Keyboard under $1000

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:48 PM PST

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

I'd prefer to stay under $800, but if something really catches my eye then I might stretch up to $1000. I'm not looking for an enormous amount of this thing, so hopefully, that budget will work out.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

I prefer a mix of battery life and performance. Anything in the new 8th Gen i5s or i7s, with 4 cores (8550u as an example).

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Obviously, I prefer a thinner and lighter device, but I would take better battery life over a thinner design any day. Weight is also a secondary concern, but nothing ridiculous is all I'm looking for here.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

I prefer Windows or Mac OS (if that's somehow possible at my price range).

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

Anything from 12 inches up to 16.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Mostly just basic office productivity applications and some medium-intensity browser use. Light gaming would be nice on an MX150 or similar but is by no means a priority, especially given the price and battery life sacrifices I would have to make for a more hardcore GPU.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

CS:GO, some indie games, maybe an older AAA title or 2. 60 FPS at 1080p low/medium is all I'm looking for.

Any specific requirements such as a good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

A high-quality keyboard is very important to me. Backlighting is also a priority but I can live without it if I have to. Solid build quality is important to me, but I'll settle for "meh" if the laptop is a good deal for the specs. A replaceable battery would be nice, but very low on the list of priorities. A trackpad with physical buttons would be nice, but is also not a priority by any stretch. I'd prefer at least 1080p for a smaller laptop, with 1440p being a request for me if the size gets above 13 inches or so. IPS would be nice but is not a priority.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I've included a lot of "would be nice but not required" on here, just to give you an idea of what my dream laptop for this scenario would be (if price was no object), and I understand that the likelihood of all those things coming in under budget is extremely slim. I just wanted to give you an idea of my taste in laptops. Thanks for any suggestions/feedback!

Need advice on laptop for my 70 yr old dad

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:32 PM PST

Looking for a laptop for my 70 yr old dad.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA. Under $1000

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. What is "2 in 1 form factor"?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important. Laptop will be used as a primary computer and won't even be unplugged unless traveling a couple time per year.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows is a must.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17" screen with a "10-key" is a must.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. None.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Absolutely no gaming on this laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Meh. Don't we all require a good keyboard?

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This will be used as a primary computer for my dad. He will never ever play any video games or do anything graphically intensive. His current laptop is almost 8 years old and I'd like this new one to last a long time as well. His primary uses will be internet and email, heavy MS Office use, and managing family photos.

I'd like to get him something fast that will last him and I don't really know the difference in a lot of the i5 laptops I see listed.

GPU Laptop choice, 1070-MaxQ(16GB) or 1060(32GB)?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 06:02 AM PST

I have to choose between two gaming laptops, which one is best? GTX 1070 MaxQ with 16GB RAM or GTX 1060 with 32GB RAM?

Edit: Thanks for the responses! I'll go with the 1070 and, if necessary, upgrade to 32GB RAM in the future.

(USA) thinnest/lightest laptop possible that can also play some games

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 06:36 PM PST

Title says it all. Currently I'm using a Surface Pro 4 that I'm looking to drop (it's really not working for me). Looking for the thinnest and lightest laptop I can get that will allow me to still play some games (listed in the form below, they're all fairly non-intensive games).

This will mostly be used for general usage & grad school once I start it. Budget is $1k or under, don't want to go over.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    USA, Under $1k

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

battery life, thin & light, portable

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

pretty important, don't want a brick that won't fit in travel bag

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows or Mac

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13" - 15"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    gaming

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Anything made by Blizzard, Path of Exile, LoL, maybe PUBG. Id like a solid 60fps at medium settings

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

good keyboard is important, and i like the touch screen

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** chroma keyboard would be pretty cool but i know that is not realistic at this price range lol

    Looking for a 15in <$510 laptop with 8GB RAM, 1080p, and SSD.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:43 PM PST

Looking for a sub-$500 laptop with the specs listed. I missed black friday deals sadly. I can work without the SSD option so long as it's possible to add one after, and the price reflects it without one.

Also can't work with Lenovo laptops. I despise everything about that company, and their laptop keyboard's look and feel terrible.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $510 max budget, United States.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money. No need for dGPU or super-long battery.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6in strongly preferred, 17 inch will work so long as it doesn't go above budget.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No games, just need a fast processor for demanding network simulation programs, Packet Tracer, GNS3, etc. Will also be used for coding in the future so I'd rather get something powerful now. Will be used primarily as a school/note taking laptop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming at all.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard should be backlit, and should include a numpad, screen should be 1080p and preferably have an SSD slot (M.2 NVMe or normal sata plug, I can add an aftermarket one myself though)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Missed black friday deals and I'm just trying to find the best bang for buck. I'm watching both Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy for laptops that fit this budget but I feel really stupid for missing those black friday deals.
