Fried something in PC by Taking out RAM sticks while PC was on.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 05:20 PM PST

    System:

    Lenovo S20 Thinkstation

    Xeon W3550

    Triple Channel RAM

    RX 480 Reference

I was messing around with ram sticks because I was trying to get different speed ram to work on the system. Since I am not used to working with triple channel RAM configs.

Was delirious since I was changing ram configs and testing. Forgot to turn off the system for one of the instances.

Realized after halfway pulling second stick.

    Then hard shut down.

PC wouldn't boot after, took out the card(most valuable part) works fine. Now the motherboard does 8 beeps 1-3-3-1 formation whether there is ram in the system or not.

Now I want to know what are the most likely parts to be fried.

Can just the slots/channels be destroyed without damage to the CPU memory controller. Or is the memory controller dead but the motherboard fine. So many questions. It had some unused slots when pulling the ram so will try booting with single ram stick.

Other than that I appreciate any help.

TL:DR Experienced system builder pulled a ram stick out of a working system and fried something.(Because too many things on my mind)

    PC Won’t Turn On

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:04 PM PST

Hey everyone, my PC stopped powering on after I unplugged it overnight and tried to plug it back in and start it.

    Since then I have:
+ Turned on and off again
+ Checked power plugged in to power strip
+ Checked if PSU set to on and tried to turned on
+ Held down power for 30 seconds, unplugged, and tried again
+ Replaced CMOS battery on Motherboard
    + Replaced PSU and rewired

Here is a picture of the wiring. and a gallery of various wiring shots

This is the first time I fully wired up a PSU, so please double-check my work!

I also included a few pictures of cables that aren't plugged into anything in hopes I may have missed something, and someone can correct me.

    Relevant Computer Hardware: * Gigabyte(edit) GA-X79-UP4 Motherboard * Corsair RMx PSU 750W * GeForce GTX 1080

I moved some of my RAM to different slots and now my PC will not Boot

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 03:57 PM PST

My PC has been crashing a lot lately mostly with the Memory Management BSOD and I heard that the issue may be the ram so I moved the ram around to see if I could narrow down the issue but now my PC will not boot and when I plug in my boot device and run the PC repair it says it cannot repair the PC and does not give a log file location is my PC dead?

Can drivers for different devices conflict? Coincidence or really weird issue?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:53 PM PST

    I'll Start from the top...

2 days ago my keyboard (Corsair Strafe) started acting up. The ESC key would randomly get pressed. I'd press it and it woulds stop, maybe.

Since the keyboard is a bit old figured it was probably an issue with the switch. So took the keyboard apart cleaned it, solder joints for the switch looked clean no corosion, used a bit of airpressure to make sure no dust was inside the switch. (Note: There is a piece of white metal sodered above the PCB so you cant easily clean with IPA under the switch.)

Put back together. Seemed to work for a few hours but the issue re-appeared. Looking on the internet a similar issue was fixed with a K70 version by simply reinstalling firmware. Sooo, I updated the driver for the keyboard an re-flashed the firmware. Easy, simple no errors.
Didn't really work but hey 3 yo keyboard, I'll probably just replace it all together in the near future.

EXCEPT cue weird driver problems all over:

Mouse randomly get slugish (Logitech G403 wireless. The issue persists both connected and on baterry).
Soundcard (ASUS Strix Raid DLX) not detected by software but it does work although I'm missing functionalities given by the Strix Software and not available through windows control panel.

It seems rather odd that all these issues hit at the same time to be unrelated to one another at the same time they are completely different things.
OK Keyboard and mouse connect via USB, but the Soundcard is PCIe. Also completely separate drivers.

My plan curently is to remove Corsair drivers, use a plain usb keyboard and completely reinstall drivers for the soundcard and mouse.

    Any other suggstions are welcome.

Help me with my CPU confusion !

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 10:52 PM PST

    This is the Situation

I recently had a birthday and with Christmas coming up I was able to come up with a $60 budget ( Yeah I know lol, I'm a student and all funds basically go to that and what bills I have)

I currently have an extremely outdated motherboard (N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX) and a Phenom II x4 960t CPU.

While I love my CPU, the board is outdated and with a limited budget, I could only do so much.

Lately a lot of games are requiring SSE4.1 (Mainly due to Denuvo) and are becoming unplayable to me, even if my CPU is powerful enough to run them.

Today I was able to grab an ASUS M5A78L at a low cost of $30 from a local seller nearby.

I had $27 left to my name, and the only CPU I was able to grab, was an FX-4100 for $21 on an ebay bid.

Now I know that the Phenom II x4 960t has way better quad-core speed, and the FX-4100 has slightly better single-core speed.

but the FX-4100 is bulldozer which supports SSE4.1/SSE4.2

    This is the question

Point being. Am I taking a huge loss if I put the FX-4100 CPU into my motherboard, or is it better to just continue using the Phenom II x4 960t?

I had already purchased the FX-4100, but I can always, sometine in the far future get another CPU and just have the FX-4100 as a backup or perhaps a second build someday.

    My current build:

    N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX Motherboard

AMD Phenom II x4 960t (Not OC/ current Mobo won't allow) 12gb of DDR3 ram (I had 16, but I recently took them all out and never bothered to put all 16gb back in)

    MSi R7 250x 2gb DDR3 OC'd edition GPU.

I forget what powersupply but its a gold 450w

I should also mention that I upgraded from an Athlon ii x4 645 back in March of 2018, to the Phenom II x4 960t.

So if the FX is at least on par with the Phenom and better than the Athlon II x4 645, I'd be happy.

Is HDMI 1.4 cable of sending HDCP 2.2 content?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 07:02 PM PST

I'm struggling to get my 4k Blu Rays to play from my PC to any of my monitors. I have an Intel i9 9900k, a Gigabyte z390 Ultra and a high bandwidth HDMI 2.0A cable.

My TV, motherboard, CPU and cable are all HDCP 2.2 compliant. The only odd thing out is that the motherboard has an HDMI 1.4 output, not a 2.0 output. I keep getting errors when using Cyberlink software that somewhere in my signal chain, an HDCP 2.2 error is occurring.

Can HDCP 2.2 content be delivered through an HDMI 1.4 port? This is getting ridiculous and I just need some closure on whether I could ever watch these damn movies haha

    Thanks

Would a docking station be my best bet to recovering my data due to a corrupted HD?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 12:42 AM PST

The local tech says my windows is corrupted. He advised that I hook up 2 hard drives and just drag and drop. I was about to until I found this "docking station" on youtube. I never heard of it until today.

I tried fixing the windows with the installation CD but to no avail. I just want my data to transfer to a new laptop.

This is the one I bought

Black bar on new secondary monitor, image squished.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:58 AM PST

    Pic related : http://puu.sh/CbFVz/eac2d36c7b.jpg

    Windows 10 64bit Nvidia Geforce GTX 960 Intel i3-2120

My old secondary monitor up and died on me, so I got this replacement on the cheap. It works, strictly speaking, but not really. It's a BENQ FP767 and it's being a dick.

I've tried fiddling around with resolutions (The native resolution, which it is set to in the picture, is 1280x1024, though other attempts at resolution have resulted in nothing better). The black bar does "move around" based on what the resolution is, so it's not just dead screen. The only piece of advice I've been able to find online was "use the auto adjust", which I did and got this as the result.

One thing that I could potentially see as being an issue is that the cable connecting it to the PC is going through an adapter, but my old monitor had the same thing going and it worked fine.

    Laptop stuck at restarting.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 09:57 PM PST

My Dell Inspiron 15.6 inch gaming laptop that is only a few months old has encountered a problem. My laptop keyboard suddenly stopped working, so I decided to try and restart my computer as my mouse was still functioning. Now my laptop frozen on the restarting screen. The mouse no longer works and the keyboard still doesn't function. I am unable to turn off the computer via the power button. I currently have it unplugged waiting for the battery to drain so I can try and reboot it or access bios. I am unsure of what to do and would like some insight before I start messing with the insides.

I am currently running windows 10.

    Thanks.

    ZTE phone won't turn on

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:49 AM PST

i apologise if this isnt the right place to post this but i cant find any answers via google.

my phone is a ZTE Telstra 4GX Plus (i believe)

so last night i put my phone on to charge before i went to sleep, as i always do because by the end of the day its usually dead or nearly dead. when i woke up this morning, i couldnt turn the phone on no matter what i tried. when i plug the charger into my phone, the little red light at the top comes on so it knows i'm doing something, it just doesnt seem to want to charge or turn on. ive tried plugging it in to different chargers. ive tried holding down every button in every combination multiple times, for as long as two minutes. still nothing. the battery doesnt appear to be removable so i havent tried taking it out. i dont even care about the phone, i want a new better one, but i can't lose the pictures i have saved on it and i dont have them backed up anywhere. im desperate and will admit many frustrated tears have been cried. any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 10 installation not detecting SSD

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:44 AM PST

Trying to install windows 10 from flash drive. SSD is not detected. Not detected in BIOS either, unless I'm missing something (I'm a novice). Tried googling for solutions, couldn't find anything.

SSD is a Silicon Power Ace A55. Sata type, not M.2

    Other system specs.

    • MoBo: ASRock b450m pro4
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600
    • G-card: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 Ti
    • RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB

    [Edit]Other info.

Booting in BIOS or UEFI doesn't change it.

Bios is version 1.2. Have 1.7 disc, but can't find cable for external CD drive. Unsure if more recent BIOS version will change anything.

SSD is not on the "approved" list for compatible drive according to ASRock. However there are only 4-5 brands they tested.

Does my SATA SSD need drivers? If so, how do I install them?

How to generate a new Google Authenticator entry for my gmail account

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:39 AM PST

I generated an entry for my gmail account in the Google Authenticator app last year, but looks like I never wrote down the recovery key. So yesterday I tried to generate a new Authenticator entry for my gmail account (along with its corresponding recovery key that I would write down this time) by pressing the red '+' key and scanning the gmail QR code, but no new entry was generated in Authenticator.

I'm ok for now because I had also set up Google Prompt 2-step verification which is what comes up when I log in from a new device. But I want to switch to using Authenticator instead. But without being able to generate a new Authenticator entry along with its own recovery key that I can write down this time, I shouldn't switch from Google Prompt. I'm generally fine, I have my gmail password and can login no problem, it's just that I want to switch security modes.

Installing windows on a new SSD

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:26 AM PST

I'm upgrading my PC with new motherboard, processor, ram and SSD. I already have windows installed on my current SSD, how do I install windows on the new SSD with ease? I don't have a USB with enough space to create a windows install.

Is it possible to have both SSD's attached at the same time and simply migrate the OS to my new SSD?

Most of my computer files are compressed. No clue how to solve this. (win 10)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:37 PM PST

So almost all of my files on my ~2 year old laptop are compressed and now have the two blue arrows on their icons. I could go through and change every file manually, but that would take hours and I don't have that time (every new file I create also starts out as compressed). Can't really find anything useful online, and I have no idea how it even started. Thankful for any help.

Help sending USB video signal over long distance (roughly 15 metres)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2018 03:03 AM PST

Not sure if this is the right sub for this, if anyone can point me in the right direction that'll be a big help too!

I have a big room about 10 metres across, I have on one end, at the moment, a USB webcam, capable of doing 1080 HD all that stuff. It works plugged directly into the computers USB3.0 port.

What I need to do is take that USB on one end of the room, take the wire up about 4 feet above everyones head, lead it roughly 15 metres to the computer so it can then be plugged in and come through as a video signal on OBS.

The problems we've faced so far are we've used a crappy camcorder, which has a mini HDMI. At first we thought Elgato was the the way to go. So we went; Camcorder>Mini HDMI cable>(Mini HDMI - HDMI converter)>HDMI cable> Elgato Cam Link> Computer.

We found out Elgato is pretty crappy when you use more than one into a computer, because we then had another Elgato HD 60S for another video signal which we had to take from a computer screen. But they didn't work together.

We then found a HD webcam lying around which had a USB connector, so we realise we couldn't just plug a long USB onto it, so we use a USB to Ethernet adaptor and then the same at the other end. That works, but it gets a really low quality signal. Instead of 1080, it's 680 and looks really bad.

We then bought, USB active repeaters, but just testing them in our office they don't recognise as being USB 3.0. We plugged in our cam Link into one (We wanted to daisy chain three together) but it can't be recognised as USB 3.0.

    So we're stuck.

TL;DR - Need a workflow that can take a USB 3.0 HD webcam, take it about 15 metres into a computers USB 3.0 port and receive a clear decent quality picture from it.

But like 2 weeks ago, i noticed that my mouse isn't working but my keyboard is working properly, so i decided to search on the net for a solution for this, tried reinstalling the driver, it even said "the device is connected" but didn't work, so i gave up and i will try to fix it Tomorrow, but after tommorow , the keyboard doesn't work anymore and i dont know what to do. I gave up, and didn't know what to do. Is there a fix for this?, the computer is working but the mouse and keyboard itself isn't working. Is there a fix for this?, sorry for bad grammar or english. Chromecast not working ONLY for Netflix

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:04 PM PST

Hello fellow Redditers, I am having a strange issue, I have a Toshiba TV with Chromecast built in. As said in the title, it is currently impossible to cast Netflix from any of our devices. I have tried it from my Pixel 2, my Chromebook (using the Netflix website and also the Android app), and my sister has tried it from her iPhone 6S. We get a message saying "unable to connect to __".

All of these same devices are able to cast Hulu and YouTube to the same TV, just not Netflix for some strange reason.

    Many thanks!

Is it possible to create a third screen with my current setup?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 11:02 PM PST

I have a Lenovo Flex 2 right now I have a second screen setup through the only HDMI input, there's no DisplayPort socket, or VGA port. There's only one USB 3.0 which I currently use for my external hard drive for a Plex Media Server, if I were to get USB 3.0 so I could use this USB 3.0 to VGA adapter would it impact the speed of the USB 3.0 with too much data going through the port at once? Should I just buckle down, and buy a new computer? Or am I okay to go ahead with what I plan on doing?

I did command prompt and used

    powercfg -lastwake

And it says usb root hub and i already disable it. Still, it keeps waking up.

Some says i might have virus or something. I scanned with avast, even boot time scan, scanned with Malwarebytes too, uninstalled avast and installed kaspersky and no virus or malware was found either.

What could be the culprit or what can i do to stop it from waking up after sleep?
