    XPS 15 9570 Owners - Initial Setup Suggestions ?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 10:43 AM PST

    Hi Reddit!

So, in a valiant effort this morning, I woke up at 2AM EST to catch the inventory refresh for the Dell Outlet to try to find a good deal on an XPS 15 that would retain a large portion of its resale value (I always keep my stuff in pristine condition and prioritize temperatures over performance for longevity).

I ended up with a 9570 with the 8750H, 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, and FHD screen (I like battery life over 4K screens) for just under $1500 before taxes. It was a refurbished unit, which I wasn't super pleased with, but there was no way I was getting that kind of deal for a new one.

So, I am no slouch when it comes to laptop troubleshooting/optimization, as I flip/refurbish laptops as a side-job, but I intend to keep this for a long time and want the experience to be seamless as possible after setting it up. I just had a few questions from the more-experienced users of the device:

    1. I typically do a clean install of Windows with every device I get, and download the drivers onto a hard drive to install before Windows Update does for me to avoid any conflicting drivers, or just incorrect ones altogether. However, I do know that Dell has the SupportAssist as a tool to do this as well. Is there any consensus as to what I should use to update everything, including BIOS? Is there a particular version of the BIOS I should lean towards or stray away from?
    2. I plan on undervolting the CPU and GPU for temperature purposes. My previous devices with the 8750H managed about -135 to -140 mV for the CPU (Core/Cache). Might tune the clock speeds down 1-200 MHz as well for multi-threaded work. Is there any tips for me regarding SpeedStep/Shift that I need to be aware of? Can the XPS achieve about the same undervolt from anecdotal experience?
    3. Are there any specific actions I need to take regarding the drive mode (AHCI/RAID/etc.) or other BIOS settings?
    4. Any other niche settings I need to take to optimize performance and battery life (such as hibernate/sleep power options, Fast Boot, etc.)?
    5. What should I check for before settling on keeping it? Backlight bleed, drive speed, thermals under real workloads (i.e. gaming or spreadsheet calculations), anything else? Should I just return the device or work with Dell's support team?

I know it's a lot and a bit specific, but I truly appreciate any help I can get ahead of time. I posted this in the Dell subreddit and didn't get a whole lot of responses. I should be getting the device this week (I paid $60 for next-day shipping) but want to be as prepared as possible.

    Thank you in advance, Reddit!

Laptop for sale! HP Envy 13t, Intel Core i7, 16 gigs of DDR4 Ram, Nvidea Geforce mx150, backlit keyboard, 13.3 inch touchscreen

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 02:13 PM PST

I am thinking about selling my laptop smply because I am considering buying a 2 in 1 laptop instead

Included in the pictures are the exact model that I ordered straight from HP.com about four months ago, and if you were to order the same one from HP right now the price is 1299.99 discounted to 1099.99.

As for the condition, the laptop looks 100% brand new except for a tiny ding on one of it's corners (you probably wouldn't even notice it, but I wanted to be honest and let you know about it) and one of the flaps in front of the USB port is being reinforced by a piece of barely visible clear tape because the piece sometimes comes off. I have only used the laptop for school work this semester and it has worked great

I don't have a specific price in mind but I was thinking somewhere around 950, you basically get a 150 dollar discount on a new computer and a tiny ding

If you want to see pictures, talk further about it, or make an offer, just let me know!

    Suggestions for good all-around laptop

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 01:33 PM PST

Hello! I am a student in my first year of uni and I was looking to buy a laptop. I currently have an ASUS gaming laptop (FX504GD) but I am not happy with its performance (some more demanding games stutter a lot) nor with its portability/battery life. It was a really bad investment for it and I will be looking to sell it and I will want to purchase a new laptop in the future. My uni tasks are not very demanding, as I am doing a Marketing course (so I mostly just use stuff like Office) but I do like to game from time to time (games such as Black Ops 4, some FIFA etc. I am also happy with always playing on the lowest settings).

What laptops should I be looking towards? I do not want to spend too much (I would have to put some money apart, so 1.5k would be the absolute maximum) and I want a device that is both portable (easy to take to university) and that can run games at home well.

How’s the MSI GL63 build quality vs Dell G5?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 12:11 PM PST

I am considering the Dell G5 and the MSI GL63. The specs are similar, i7 and 1060 GTX. I have been using a Dell Inspiron for a long time and enjoying it so I am biased towards Dell. However, all the bad news about overheating in the G5 and G7 laptops scared me. I'm considering the MSI GL63 instead. Is the build quality as good? Can I expect to use the laptop for at least 3-4 years? Thanks

Can i use this SSD for my laptop

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:12 AM PST

Recently I got a new laptop the MSI GF63 8RC, but I find myself in need of an SSD upgrade. I found a cheap SSD that I'm looking into, but need advice whether I can use it or not. In the specs of my laptops it says it has an M2 slot for an SSD, but looking into it I've seen it can be B,M, and B&M type slot. By the looks of it, it seems to me that this SSD is B&M but I don't know if that means I can use it. Also, there are different dimensions of the SSDs, this one being 2280, and I don't know how to tell if it can fit. The laptop and the SSD are in the links below. Thanks.

    Dell XPS 15 / Lenovo X1 Extreme / Huawei Matebook Pro X

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:12 AM PST

Having a hard time deciding between these 3 options. Looking at the 8th Gen I7 for all 3 with 16 GB RAM. Using mostly for photo editing, coding, light to medium 3d rendering and some light gaming.

Some of my thoughts on each option:

Matebook X Pro - I like the bezel of the Huawei (The webcam placement doesn't bother me) and the overall design is very sleek and appealing. Touchscreen is nice, I have a surface I use on the go and it can be useful for 3D orbiting without a mouse.

Dell XPS 15 - The XPS seems to do the best in CPU performance especially utilizing multi thread in rendering. Also seems to be pretty capable in gaming. Pretty boring looking but I can always slap a Dbrand on the case.

Lenovo X1 Extreme - The X1 is just a beast, has every port you could need but the aesthetic is meh and has had the same look for 20 years. Also not really designed for gaming at all.

Anybody have any of these that can share some insight or things the like/dislike about the product?

    Thanks!

Will the Huawei Matebook D run Photoshop/etc.?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:09 AM PST

I just ordered the 14" Huawei Matebook D here. I tried to do some research, but nothing really showed up on how it performs with Photoshop. I'm a student and I'll need to use Photoshop (Cs6 or CC) later on. I'm primarily using my gaming laptop right now which is Intel Core i5 7th gen and it runs Photoshop terribly slow (horrible lag, makes Photoshop unusable). The Huawei is AMD Ryzen 5, so given its specs, would it be capable of running more advanced editing software? I bought it mainly because you get a lot of bang for your buck since I'm on a budget and can't find anything stronger for less than $600-700, but if there is, I may return this. I'm not a tech expert so any advice would be appreciated. Some reviews I found said it handled casual games like League of Legends and DOTA like a champ so I don't doubt its functionality in that area but if it can't run editing apps, it's a dealbreaker for me. I don't need it to have crazy, mindblowing performance but I hope for it to be able to run Adobe apps in a usable state. I've considered the Dell XPS 13 or the Microsoft Surface Pro, but it kind of breaks my budget--anywho, if it's really the only choice I have in terms of better performance, I am willing to splurge.

    Asus Q534UX Laptop unexpectely slow

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 11:02 AM PST

Laptop about a year old, ASUS Q534UX. It has always been dog slow with regards to browsing. I think I have narrowed it down to being related to gif and HTML5 vids. I think.

    The specs:

    i7-7500

    16G Ram

512 SSD Os, 2T spinny disk secondary

    Intel HD 620

    Nvidia GTX 950M

Symptoms: I go to a webpage with animated graphics or videos and the laptop fans all go max, the laptop gets hot to handle, the web pages stutters and slows down, vids don't play or play choppy, hard to get the start menu back, browser responds in > ~20 second intervals, sometimes task manager is needed to kill browser to get system back. I've been testing with Imgur front page and opening a few images in new tabs. Sometimes the Imgur front page is enough to take the laptop down. Testing with Firefox and Chrome latest versions.

All drivers are up to date.

    Things I've tried:

Switching browser HW accelleration. This switches the problem from gpu to cpu. Slowness and unresponsiveness persists.

Switching between GPUs with Nvidia control panel. This switches the problem from one GPU to another. Both are at 100 %.

Reducing resolution. The laptop is 4k/ Perhaps the 4x resolution is to much. I reduced the resolution to 1920x1080. Problem persists.

Fiddling with settings in the browsers: the configs of the browsers have been heavily fiddled with, having the problem for while had led me to search fiddle away on the browsers. No effect.

    Removing all add-ons.

I have a desktop (few years old) with specs less than the laptop and opening Imgur only adds 10% gpu/cpu business. In addition, I can have a hd steam game playing (Witcher 3, for example) on one monitor, Netflix, Imgur and programming IDE on another and the performace is still not @ 100%

I have a 2nd gen ipad that can look at Imgur just fine.

Mobile phones & Imgur: all ok

Are my expectations too high ? Do all browsers suck nowadays ? Do the Nvidia mobile GPUS suck ? I don't understand. I can play Witcher or League fairly well with decent fps and definitely not as much performance degradation as a browser.

    Lenovo 720S 14" Vs 15"

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:28 AM PST

i'm not sure which one of these 2 would be the right fit for me.

currently planning on purchasing either this (i7 model for ~$1180):

    https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-700-series/Ideapad-720S-14/p/88IP70S0833

    OR this (i7 8GB model for ~$1500)

    https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-700-series/Ideapad-720S-15/p/88IP70S0895

They're both great and suit my needs but i'm not sure which one will last longer, i'm looking for something that's going to last around 4 years without any hiccups down the line I've done a lot of research on both devices but i'm still unsure. If anyone has any other suggestions please feel free to add so in the comments. Also if anyone knows whether these laptops will have better deals in the next month or so let me know (i.e boxing day or something)!

Is the surface pen woth it? Any alternatives?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 09:15 AM PST

Hi everyone, So lately I have bought myself a Surface Pro when it was on sale for black friday. It was the surface (i5, 8GB ram, 128GB storage) and the cover for 770€. My question now is should I buy the surface pen too? Because right now it is also on sale. The only things is that I don't know if I would use it a lot as I never used a pen on pc. I probably won't take the surface every day to school. So are there any alternatives or would you still recommend the surface pen (keeping in mind it is at 70€ right now instead of 110€).

    Thanks for your help

Razer Blade (2017) Docking question/need help.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:50 AM PST

Hey, guys, I have a 2017 Razer Blade and I am in need of some guidance, I am a software engineering student and I have realized very quickly that my life will be easier with a bigger monitor like a 26" monitor, an external keyboard and mouse, I also enjoy playing games so my question is what is the best way to go about this? especially if I decided to do 2 external monitors and say put my laptop away in my desk cabinet while using everything externally? I guess my bigger question here is can I dock my laptop with a docking station, put it away in my desk and use an external monitor mouse and keyboard to play games and not experience input lag?

Lenovo IdeaPad 530S-15 shipping to Estonia?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 08:00 AM PST

So I decided that for my new computer I'd like to buy Lenovo IdeaPad 530S-15 (15.6-inch, 8GB RAM, i5-8250U, GeForce MX150). The problem is that NO store in Estonia seems to have it nor can they order it. So I was hoping that somebody here would know of a tech store in Europe, Russia (or anywhere in the world actually) that has this model and would ship to Estonia.

better gpu but additional hdd = good deal?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2018 03:53 AM PST

    Hey!

I pretty much decided to get a Legion Y530. I saw an offer for the variant with i5 8300H, GTX 1050, 8GB DDR4 and 256GB SSD for 900€/1020$ and wanted to go for it. Now the delivery is delayed until after christmas, so I looked for alternatives.

I found an offer for the same specs but with the GTX 1050 TI and 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD for just 50€ more.

I've always had a HDD but definitely want a SSD this time, so I don't really know how good this hybrid/combination is.

I will play League of Legends on a daily basis, but rarely play other games on it, if that helps.

Also, what confuses me is that the 1050 TI one is called "81FV00KYGE" (https://www.cyberport.de/notebook-und-tablet/notebooks/lenovo/pdp/1c31-39g/lenovo-legion-y530-15ich-81fv00kyge-15-fhd-i5-8300h-8gb-1tbplusssd-gtx1050ti-win10.html) while another one with the same specs that I've found for a higher price is called "81FV012GGE" (https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/lenovo+legion+y530+15ich+81fv012gge/eqsqid/4573c0f3-0eeb-4818-94ff-3f9d799b5212). Am I missing something that makes the first one cheaper? As I said, I didn't find a difference in the specs.

    Thanks!

edit: I think I found the difference between those 2; on the first site it says "1050 TI with 2GB VRAM". As far as I know, the TI cards always have 4GB ram?
