General use and light gaming under £750

General use and light gaming under £750

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 04:47 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: UK, preferably under £750 but I can go a little higher.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money is most important but 2-in-1 would be pretty rad. Specs more important though.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not super important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 or 7

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14+ Inches preferred.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Low end games.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Pretty much just TBoI: Rebirth, FTL: Faster Than Light and Hearthstone (Though I guess Hearthstone doesn't run well ever anyway.)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really. Keyboard is pretty important I guess. Good build quality would be nice as I'm only buying a new laptop because my current one is falling apart.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just a good reliable laptop, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is Lenovo IP 320 15 good for movies, documents and learning web dev?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 04:03 AM PDT

I have found this model from Lenovo for 450 $. This falls right into my budget. I would use this laptop for watching movies, surfing and learning web development. I know that web development requires high specs, but I am just starting. Is this good for its worth. I am not in the US so choice of laptops for this budget is limited. Specs:

    i3 6060U 2.0 GhZ

    256 GB SSD

    4 GB DDR4

    Intel HD Graphics 520

    Full HD matte display (62.7% sRGB (Argyll 3D) 40.1% AdobeRGB) Maximum: 220 cd/m² Average: 194.2 cd/m²

It has optical drive so I could put SSD caddy instead of it and put another SSD drive in it. Would that increase performances?

Laptop for AV Display and Data processing.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 03:18 AM PDT

Hi All. I am looking to purchase a laptop mainly for the two required task:

    1) AV Display. Our company churns out slide decks for professional speakers that is always more than a few hundred megabytes in size, together with embedded videos. Which part of the Laptop should i optimize to ensure low latency between slides switching? Our common-issued laptop always crashes when attempting to display these large presentations and the embedded videos always lags.

    2) Data Processing. We do data cleaning and run through a number of SQL scripts that takes 30-40 mins to process. Again, which part should i optimize to reduce this?

I understand that using a desktop may be more cost effective, but given my current office budgeting process, I need to have a hardware that is portable in nature.

    Thank you!!

    School Laptop, under US$1000

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 03:11 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Around AUD$1000-1500 which is US$1000, and buying from Australia

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** I do not prefer a 2 in 1 form factor. I value better specifications over battery life, however I need balance.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Weight and thinness is not important

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I will be running Linux on it

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** I am looking at 13"-14"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** This will mainly be for school, however I will be using CAD occasionally.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** At most I will be playing rimworld or Civ5. FPS needs to be above 60

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** I will be using a mouse, so the touchpad does not need to be top quality. However I would enjoy a good keyboard and solid build quality

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Kind of a summary. Using for school, CAD, programming, and a tad of gaming. Would like to have nice keyboard and a moderate balance of battery life and performance, however leaning towards performance

Long time mac user ready to switch

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: United States - < $1000, ideally below $700

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

      • Big SSD -- need atleast 250 gb of storage
      • > 8 GB memory
      • CD drive nice to have
      • Portable, sub 4 or 5 pounds
      • Goodish battery, 3-5 hours. Enough for a short flight
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Under 4 pounds would be nice. I like the thinness to Apple's but not the specs

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" or 15".

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Basic photo editing like touch ups.

Development: * LAMP server, small docker containers for rails (if windows) * Sublime / VS code * Git, Github, Source Tree * Powershell, or some kind of bash alternative

General: * Chrome * Spotify * An office suite like MS office. We also use Google Drive heavily

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • build quality, need something that can last many years. Current Macbook pro I have is from 2011.

    • A USB 2 or 3 port. No dongles. An HDMI slot would be nice

    • CD Drive

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been a Mac user since 2007. I do light web development on a Macbook I've had since 2011. It works great but we need a good family computer to share between me and my wife. The specs on the new macbooks aren't worth the $1000-2000 they're charging for 8 gb of memory and 1.6-2.0 gzh. My 2011 Macbook pro is more powerful then the current laptops on Apple's shelves. I don't want to spend a lot to get a slow crappy computer.

The Macbook has taken well to an SSD upgrade and doubling the memory. It works great but my wife's computer (same model, no SSD) is not working very well. She wants a new one; I want one we can share.

I've been using Windows 10 for work (work provided machine) and think it's fine for the NodeJs and React work I have to do. No qualms with moving (personally) to Windows.

    Gaming Laptop?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:12 PM PDT

I really want to get into PC gaming. I'm moving from PS4 and I'm just not sure if I have the space for a desktop atm. Can anyone suggest a gaming laptop around $1000 that would be worth my time? Or should I just forget it...

And, is it possible for me to upgrade down the road with a laptop? Sorry, obviously I'm kinda a noob to this...

Edit: I know very little about specs and screen/laptop size doesn't mean much to me, just looking for some thing to play a few games that will be coming out soon. I'm a Moba fan so if I had to say a particular game, if it could play LOL that would be enough at a decent frame rate. Although I don't like top-down mobas lol.

    College laptop around $1000

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:47 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA - $1000 , maybe $1300

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want at least 8 hours of battery life, and good performance (no hard throttling)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, since I'm going to be carrying it around college, but thinness shouldn't come at the cost of abysmal thermals.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I was thinking 13 or 14 inch, but a 15 inch with a small footprint might also be fine.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do want to do some music production, which can be pretty cpu heavy. No gaming, maybe some photo editing, and programming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like it to be fairly durable - I want it to last 4 years

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My most important requirement is battery life, I need at least 8 hours, and my second most important requirement is weight, I don't to lug a large laptop around. I'd like good thermals too.

MacBook Air 2018 for CS Student

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:22 PM PDT

Hi, I'm going to be taking some CS courses later next semester. Since I'm trying not to spend too much money, I'm wondering if it's a safer bet to purchase an older Macbook Pro or if the new MacBook Air that was unveiled recently would be a solid choice. Really looking to spend under $1500. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hp envy x360 13z, good for college note taking and light gaming?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 11:07 PM PDT

I have been looking around at 2-1 laptops that could also play some games (dota 2 60 fps) during any down time. I wanted the laptop to be light and have a good battery life. I needed the 2-1 for note taking and drawing diagrams. I was looking at the ryzen 5 vega 8 model. I think its a good price for being under 800 dollars. What are your thoughts? Any other suggestions for laptops like this under 900 USD.

    Reliable University Laptop 800-1100, Canada

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:36 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800-1100 CAD (flexible for the right one), Canada.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't care for 2 in 1. I prefer good battery life, enough to last me the school day (and then some) as well as best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight not important, but thinness is kind of important since it'll be mostly-full backpack most of the time.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I'm used to my current laptop's 15", so around that size.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Adobe Creative Cloud, namely Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects.

    • Unity

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm not gaming.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • A good keyboard would be nice.

    • reliable build

    • I illustrate and edit as well, so a good display and accurate colors are important to me.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • My current laptop (Asus-X540LA) is giving me a hard time from constantly freezing, and it struggles with waking from sleep (when you close the screen) and on the rare occasion it does at all, it takes a very long time. I don't have time for these things as they add up and it means I can't take notes during lecture because of just how long getting it to start up takes.

    • I'm hoping for something fast and durable that can start up quickly when I need to get back to work. As well as multitask, when I have different applications open at once.

    • For context, I'm an engineering/cs undergrad and I hope to take graphics courses in upper years which may involve dealing with 3d rendering programs. However, that's still a long time from now, so any advice with regards to dealing with 3D simulation and what that would actually mean in terms of specs is still greatly appreciated.

    • I don't think I'd be wrong to say my current laptop may have some of its current issues from two years of being repeatedly and hastily shoved into a heavy backpack with a ton of books. So it's also important to me that my next laptop is durable and sturdy enough to withstand the prolonged physical stress.

-I haven't gotten around to doing in-depth searching/research myself on laptop specs, and I actually don't know a lot about it at all, so even if you don't have a specific laptop to recommend any advice to let me know what to look out for is appreciated!

I need a real laptop for university

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 10:18 PM PDT

I currently have a Surface Pro 4 which I currently enjoy, but after using it at university for a year several issues have caused me to consider getting a real laptop for school. My battery life tops out at 3.5 hours under normal circumstances(note-taking and java development at "Darker" brightness) and random fatal errors occur at least once daily. I love the SP4 as a concept, but in practice it falls short of fulfilling my needs as a university student. I need to be able to work for 7-8 hours without requiring a charger and I need to be able to work without the worries of daily fatal crashes. I have kept all drivers up to date and have factory reset the SP4 twice. I don't really have a price cap, and I am willing to spend more if the laptop will last me well for the next 5-6 years.

TL;DR:No price cap, need a laptop with 8-9 hours effective battery, and low(hopefully zero) chance of fatal errors

Looking for a portable laptop that can be used for college work, mainly general use. USA, with a budget of 1200-1600.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 06:31 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a new laptop for college work since I dropped mine. For reference, I have a Dell Latitude E7470 right now, but I'd like to upgrade. I'm going to be using it for mainly just college homework, so I don't need it to be like a whole gaming laptop, but nicer specs would be nice.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200-1600$, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm really looking for a long lasting laptop that brings the best specs for the money. That's main priority for me.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd prefer a laptop on the lighter side (3-4lbs max) and thinness doesn't really matter as long as it's not like a dictionary.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Around a 13-16inch screen would be nice.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD, Photoshop, maybe some Fortnite...

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing too severe, like 60-100fps would be cool but unnecessary.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard, nice build quality in case I accidentally drop it, and touch screen would be nice, but touch screen is unnecessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It would be great if these laptops could be found on Best Buy or Electronic Express as I have a giftcard.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. -2 in 1 would be nice but processing power/speed is the most important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? this shit could be a suitcase made of concrete and i'd still carry it around all day.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows preferred

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. prefer medium-large but it's not a priority.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? n/a light gaming at best (like rts stuff) but again not super important.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? would prefer a more reliable build.

$600-800 laptop that I can dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu on

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 09:14 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:
      • US, CA. Probably $750-800.
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.
      • Specs are most important, preferably 6th-8th gen i5 or i7 CPU.
      • Preferably both an SSD and decent HDD, or either one and the ability to upgrade.
      • 8gb of RAM.
      • No decent gpu necessary.
      • Good battery life would be nice, but not necessary.
      • 2 in 1 would be really cool if possible.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • Not important.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
      • Linux and Windows.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • 14+ Inches.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • Zero games, this laptop is a secondary. However ability to do things on Unity could be nice, although not necessary.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • Good keyboard would be very nice, nothing fancy is necessary.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • A decent laptop for programming that can run linux and windows, and is portable.

Is Acer Swift 3 laptop with ryzen 5 processor is a good buy?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 08:35 PM PDT

I'm not from the US. The reviews I have seen on the online store is pretty good with 4.2 out of 5 rating. Since I haven't used an AMD before I am somewhat sceptical about this purchase. Is anybody here who has used this device already? I'll give machine specs

    AMD Swift 3 SF315 -41

    8 GB RAM

    1 TB HDD

    WINDOWS 10 HOME

    AMD Radeon Vega 8

    Full H D display

It costs around 650 dollars in conversion to dollars. Is this worth buying? How are the quality of Acer laptops in general?

Laptop for Engineering Grad Student (Updated w/ Options to Compare) ~$1500

    Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:08 PM PDT

**Total budget and country of purchase:**

$1500 and USA willing to flex a bit for the right option

**Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Good battery life, weight, and performance are all pretty important

**How important is weight and thinness to you?**

I'll be carrying it a lot, so I would prefer relatively light. My previous one was around 7ish lbs and I could feel it every day.

**Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows preferred

**Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    13-15" preferably

**Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

light photo editing, lots of excel/word/ppt, DNA analysis (relatively light work, but better RAM certainly wouldn't hurt), and lots of tabs in chrome (right now I think I have ~50 in my main window with 5 side windows-I like having papers right there), maybe a bit of programming, but we have a cluster for anything serious.

**If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Maybe like an old copy of VtMB for travel (stuck in an airport without wifi/long flights), but nothing too serious. Most of my current gaming is on my fun laptop or desktop. They're powerful enough for that, but I'm looking for something more portable for work.

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

I need a good keyboard, high build quality, but don't need (or really want) touch screen or finger print reader. I've already got a USB optical drive I can use. I'll need an external drive for daily backups (required by the feds to save everything externally. Feel free to suggest some options there too if you have any in mind). Looking for 500GB-1TB memory, preferably at least partly in SSD form; 12-16 GB RAM; HDMI; good (>8hrs) battery life

**Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I want to carry it around every day, so size and weight are pretty important. I also need enough RAM that I can open a ~1500 base pair length of DNA and have chrome work alright with the rest. Battery life is important when I'm presenting or just writing. I guess HD would be nice if I get stuck in the lab late waiting for something to run and want to watch netflix.

Main Options From Last Time: (Some followup questions)

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme/P1 ~$1500-1600 (near constant discounts for .edu emails) (~$1450 @ 33% off)

With an H processor, how quiet, cool does it run?How light does it feel? It's hard to believe it's only 4 lbs with all of the hardware. The last time I had time to seriously weigh out needs on a laptop was around 2013ish. How is the default screen for quality? With my use case, do I really need a/this graphics card? How is the screen on this? Am I just paying more for a slightly higher number that won't impact performance? I don't want to be somebody paying 2k for a glorified facebook machine, you know? The Lenovo prices here were done with a 25% off coupon, they'll probably drop a bit more for a 33% .edu discount.

    16 MB RAM

    1-2x 256 GB SSD

    i5-8400H

    1050Ti Graphics Card

    1080 FHD Screen

    Dell XPS 13 ~$1350-1500

It looks like it will run cooler/quieter with the U processor, but at the same time it feels pretty good to have the power available. It looks like it's about 3 lbs which would be nice and light to carry with me. Is the price basically stuck here or can it come down much like with Lenovo's discounts? The Extreme has quite a bit more for a similar weight, so I'd expect a bigger price gap.

    16 MB RAM

    256-512 GB SSD

    i7-8550U

    1080 FHD

Lenovo Thinkpad T480 ~$1450-1550 (Lenovo discounts like above) (~$1350 @33% off)

The WQHD Screen was recommended, so it's listed here. Which of the rear batteries is suggested 6 cell or 6 cell cylinder? Do I need the graphics card for daily use? It weighs the same as the Extreme, but is a bit cheaper with less hardware (processor and graphics card). How much am I really going to notice much of a difference?

    16 MB RAM

    256-512 GB SSD

    i7-8350U

    MX150

    1440 WQHD

Right now I'm leaning toward the X1 Extreme, but not entirely sure. Again, thank you for all of your help!

Preemptive edit: I'm a grad student with a nice stipend, so I'm more worried about needing to backup data than about paying for a replacement. Money's not an issue, but the time to get data is, so reliability is really important -- backups are nice, but the best one is one you never need to use.
