    Simple Questions - October 03, 2018

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 05:14 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Is $1000 enough to make a decent computer for Gaming?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:09 AM PDT

I would like to cap my budget at $1000 for a build. But if need be could splurge on some things. I just want it to last longer than a year or so.

I dont do alot of high end gaming, mainly BOI, Slay the Spire, and more games like that. Although I have been waiting for a good computer to finally play through the witcher to it's full effect.

    Any thoughts?

Edit: Thanks for the replies everyone! After reading the responses from here, I tried to tweak my build a bit.

Dropped the AIO, got a bigger SSD and a Hard Drive. Although I would like to buy a Vega 56 'cause this one is on sale right now but the shipping cost just (almost) brings it back up to the original price (I'm from PH). So that option is out and I can't trust myself buying used GPU as it could have problems down the line.

Also, the parts present in this build are readily available at stores near me so I can't use newegg/amazon to buy the parts.

Wait for in depth reviews regarding Z390 motherboards power delivery BEFORE you buy! (x-post from /r/intel)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:53 AM PDT

During the Z370 launch a few redditor's ended up regretting their purchases after Overclock.net revealed the power delivery systems across the Z370 lineup found here. The user "br0da" made this tier list and also performed and compiled extensive testing on many models.

Power delivery is very important and the name doesn't always mean "good" from what we have seen. ASUS has low end and high end power delivery, so does gigabyte, MSI, etc. I suggest you wait for these boards to be analyzed before you spend your hard earned cash.

Two months of collecting used parts, time to build the recycle rig 2.0

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 10:59 AM PDT

I got into PC building last year by buying and upgrading a used Optiplex 990, dubbed the recycle rig. I sold that one this month and doubled my budget to make a new and improved recycle rig. Every part in this build was bought used, besides the SSD. Yesterday the case finally arrived so it's time to start building now!

My goal is to game in 1080p, on a 60hz monitor on high settings. I chose intel over amd because it was hard to find a ryzen cpu and mobo used, for a good price, and I didn't realize that my only upgrade path will be coffee lake CPU's, and no future generations.

    Operating system missing?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:43 AM PDT

So I started up my PC this morning and was greeted by a black screen saying "operating system missing." I panic momentarily, restart the computer a couple times, then realize that I have a usb flash drive still in the computer. It was doing the boot sequence I had set in the bios years ago which starts with usb drives. I took out the flash drive and the computer started without issue. Somehow up until last night, I had never shutdown my computer and left the flash drive in. Well, now I know and hopefully someone else who doesn't already know can learn as well.

    Potentially Upgrading to SSD

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 10:47 AM PDT

So I currently have a 1TB HDD on my PC and I've had it for about a year or so with only 300GB or so used/taken up. Is there any way to transfer eveything including windows OS to the SSD? I still have my Windows product key and a way to install it via flash drive. But do I have to uninstall or install anything to begin with? Thanks in advance.

    $1700 Gaming build (CAD Dollars)

Gaming PC, hoping to run anything out there on Ultra at 60fps on a 1440p monitor.

Canadian dollars. Don't want to spend more than $1700ish.

This is what I put together so far. Please point out if anything I have in the list below is lopsided or certain parts bottlenecking others.

Also, it says the i5 has built in cooling, do I need an additional cooler?

Small PC w/ 1070TI, Ryzen 2600, and an aftermarket CPU cooler

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:02 PM PDT

I'm in a bit of a rush to catch the bus for work and basically the gist is as follows:

    I can't find a small form factor case that isn't > $60 / awful air flow

I'm looking to stay on a budget as I'm not insanely focused on the size of the pc and only work part time (but my ancient AMD CPU, even overclocked like mad, is awful) but would like something smaller than my behemoth of a PC at the moment. My fiance was lucky enough to have had her PC built a few years after mine and was blessed with the experience one gains from that first build. She has a Ranger case from, I believe, Rosewill, and it's much more pleasant than mine as far as desk space goes.

I prefer my case to be laying down on its side simply because I have a cat and I don't want it to be knocked over. At the moment I've gotten away with this by setting my second monitor on top of the case but I'm upgrading to a 4K TV and my current GPU absolutely can't handle it whatsoever (30FPS max because HDMI limitations + even Photoshop is unusable - even at 1080P resolution)

1070 TI because in practice it's cheaper than 1080 and can be overclocked to similar performance; I'm not aiming to game at 4K (just standard upscaling the render from 1080 to the 4K display similar to what the Xbox One S does) and only want this to replace my shitty dual monitor layout for productivity purposes (and, perhaps, being a shit tier butthole and running Rocket League at 4K and actually being able to see my teammates before I give them flight lessons.. assuming it's like my 2 monitor setup where it extends the camera).

2600 because my current CPU is a 2 logical core, 2 physical core CPU (in practice it seemingly just means Dual Core with awful threading despite research telling me it should be similar to quad core) and I do a lot of work that can make use of all of those cores.

Ah crap gotta go. Uh.. man I guess I got most of this to a decent place; I'm not looking to water cool simply because budget doesn't make sense - why spend $100 on a cooler when I can just spend $100 on the CPU. The 3rd party cooler was highly recommended as it's better performance than the 2600X at a similar / better cost depending on silicon lottery and prices for the parts. Thermal paste obviously but not something I feel I need help with ; I just don't want to buy parts and find out they don't fit in the case. Mobo + GPU + CPU cooler seem the only thing that matters.

SSD main drive, 2 HDD currently with a 3rd at some point to replace my 6 year old HDD that I don't trust. Crap. Late. Gtg. Sorry for not putting more effort in but I'll see if I can't add anything on mobile if necessary.

Mobile Edit: I'm asking because I only recently determined I can afford to replace my PC and it's been a couple years. I don't want to make a dumb mistake like I did the first time around and unlike my first PC I'm working with size constraints so.. I'm feeling a bit out of my league. Lots of data to parse and I figured my problem isn't unique so it's probably been solved already.

Ordered a Rx 580, but sticker on the back says gtx 1080?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 02:31 PM PDT

I ordered a rx 580 refurbished off of amazon, and it arrived today. Upon inspection, not only is it strikingly similar to a MSI gtx 1080, it has a product ID sticker on the back that says "gtx1080". Is this a misprinted label, or have I really just received a gtx1080 by accident? I don't have a pc currently to test it in, so I'm asking here wether to believe the sticker.

What monitors should I be looking at for a RX580 8gb?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:42 PM PDT

After some scouting around posts, I'm still confused about which monitors I should be looking for

    My build

    From what I've gathered...

    • I should be using free-sync because that aligns with my CPU (amd ryzen 5 2600). I guess g-sync is more for nvidia gpu's(?)

    • I shouldn't be looking at 1440p because that'd do more harm than good for the amount of frames I'll likely be getting (?) (playing games like CS:GO, LoL, fortnite only atm)

    • VESA mounts are great, but not necessary(?)

If anyone could clarify a few things, that would be awesome

Edit: Recommendations are great (personally looking at the AOC i2267fw & G2460PF), but I was rather looking for answers for the questions above hahaha

    Thanks! - SBC

One more really stupid, "can I test it like this" question...

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:22 PM PDT

I realized that there's no way for me to test a used GTX 1060 with my Dell Studio Slim 540s, exen with the 425w PSU and siding things around/leaving the side panel off to use it as a test bench, because there's no ATX cable to power one!

Yet, I had another thought. Could I use this old ddr2/core 2 quad Q8300 as a test bench if I connected the GPU to its own stand alone PSU? As in, the Dell plugged in normally, laying on its side with the other side panel off, hard drive not in the cage (may have to remove the cage temporarily), with a full size GTX 1060 plugged intimacy the PCI slot, but powered by an EVGA G3 750w PSU (not connected to anything else, other than an AC outlet).

If this is not possible, I swear I'll stop asking these questions and just get everything else for the new build first and risk missing out on some of these under-volted ex-mining gpu's, lol.

Why wont my new PSU work?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:12 PM PDT

I just replaced and old dying psu with an EVGA 650 gq, and nothing's powering on at all! I'm not getting any kind of response at all. No fans or nothing. My motherboard is an asrock z9 extreme3 if that helps.

I've plugged in the main mb power, the CPU, the drives, and the GPU. Nothing.

    I need help choosing a pre-built

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:12 PM PDT

Hey I'm not sure if this is allowed in this subreddit since it is not building a pc. However, the main reason I want a prebuilt is because I'm afraid of breaking the computer pieces.

I was wondering if there were any pre-built computers that are below $1100 dollars not including keyboard, mouse, and monitor that can run some simple games like overwatch, fortnite, and Rainbow six siege at 60fps at 1080p.

Which graphic card to run 144hz game?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:11 PM PDT

I'm building this new setup, and I want to go AMD (mostly because I like to encourage open source). I was looking at their GPU and is it correct to think the RX 580 would be enough to play games at 144fps? Or do I need the Vega line? Thanks!

    Need help for upgrading

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 02:35 PM PDT

So a couple of weeks ago while playing runescape of all the things my pc decided to end it's life. Sadly for me the old piece of junk was too old for warranty so i can't just get spare parts and now i am planning to upgrade, i still have a working 1tb HDD and my R9 290X, other running parts are too unreliable or out of date, or for the cpu and mobo basically burned. I have a very tight budget of around 300 euro's to upgrade everything except GPU and my HDD. I've had friends tell me to get an I5-2500k or ryzen products but since i don't trust them all that much i thought lets ask the reddit pro's about this. I play a lot of sim racing, vr and just sandbox games like garry's mod.
