Need help to configure my laptop

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:57 AM PDT

Hi, I need your help. My computer hardware understanding is limited.

I have a work computer, I'm hoping will be okay to casually game on as well. I know it's not a new top of the line computer, but it should work okay, right?

Dell laptop, 16GB ram, I7-6820HQ @ 2.7 GHz with an Intel HD Graphics 530. The build sheet then shows it has an Nvidia Quadro M1000M w/2GB GDDR5, which I'm confused how it has that and the HD graphics 530. Is the HD Graphics not built into the board with the addition of the Nvidia graphics card? Or are they magically going to work together?

I read that, the I7-6820 supports a maximum of 64gb of ram, so It would be beneficial for me to request a ram upgrade to at least 32gb, not only for gaming, but I'm sure the Solidworks modeling I'll be doing will benefit from it.

Or, I could ask for the older model, I5-2540 @ 2.6Ghz, which is discounting. That's only got 8gb of ram, but has a better Firepro M5950 graphics card.

    Bluetooth Mouse

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:59 PM PDT

Does anyone have recommendations for a bluetooth mouse other than Logitech or Microsoft. I generally like Microsoft mice, but the 2 bluetooth ones that I've had have only lasted about 1 year. The first failed to connect after that and the second (a sculpt comfort) is now either not registering clicks or registering 2 clicks instead of one. I just got a cheapo Tecknet mouse that just doesn't feel as solid as I want. I may get a Logitech MX Anywhere, but was hoping for some other options. My requirements are that it fits nicely in my big hand (must be at least a full size mouse), doesn't require a dongle, and has forward, back, and scroll buttons(wheel). I'd prefer that it take batteries rather than be rechargeable. Internet universe, bless me with options.

I am pretty set on buying a GM501S in the next few days, any last minute advice / suggestions?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:09 AM PDT

So recently I opened this thread to get some advice on a gaming laptop. After reading through some of the suggestions and doing some research I think I have finally come down to the decision of buying a GM501S.

The laptop will be mainly used as a desktop but I going for a laptop over a desktop as I travel often and have my home in a different country. I was looking mostly for a laptop that is durable, well built, has good heating management and some good specs (1070, good processor, sdd & hdd, etc).

I was split between the GM501S and the GT63 Titan but after reading that there is little difference I am tempted to go for the more portable laptop of the two.

Any thoughts on the above? Do you think the GM501S is the correct choice given my requirements or do you think I should be considering another option? The only downside I can find in that model is the battery life which isn't a massive concern given how I will be using it

New MacBook Air: Yea or Nay?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:54 AM PDT

$1199 for i5-8200Y, QHD+ IPS display, 8GB RAM/128 GB SSD, 2.76lbs. Butterfly switch keyboard, unknown trackpad, fingerprint sensor.

Target audience do not care about specs, only uses laptop for very basic stuff. Looks like they got it right this time (Haswell in 2018 lol) for their intended population, but it also means that Apple is drifting away from the tech enthusiasts.

In general, this is one of the cheapest QHD laptops out there. Its lightweight chassis and long battery life would be very appealing as well.

Finally a point tech reporters missed: this marks the first time that 15w U series processors are not included in the Apple lineup.

Since r/gadgets post is hijacked by Apple fanbois/girls I think this sub would be more neutral. What's your opinion?

Acer Predator 300 or Omen HP 17 for Gaming?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:46 AM PDT

I'm currently torn between the Acer Predator Helios 300 and the Omen HP 17. These two laptops are below my budget and seem to be future proof but I mostly play less demanding games at the moment (WoW and OSRS). I don't travel much so it will be charging most of the time but I would like to have a laptop that I can use on my lap sometimes.

Which will be cheaper: Black Friday + International Shipping, or buy domestically now?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:10 AM PDT

Hey r/laptops, looking for some advice on whether to buy a laptop domestically now or to wait for black friday sales but then have to ship domestically.

I'm interested in something like the Acer Aspire E 15 currently at $360 for research (Matlab) and gaming use (Skyrim/Witcher).

    this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079TGL2BZ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

If I buy it now, shipping will be within the US and it'll cost $385 with taxes.

If I wait for Black Friday sales, I'll need to ship it internationally and the price will increase by $90ish dollars in shipping costs and import fees.

Would I actually be saving any money by waiting or should I just buy it now?

128GB SSD showing 71,8GB free space

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:34 AM PDT

Not sure where should i post this, but a few days ago i bought an ASUS X540LA with 128GB SSD. I installed windows and most of the drivers, and it showed i have 119GB free place. Now i had to reinstall 2 drivers because my mousepad was not working, and after the installation it only shows 71,8GB free space? ( It might have showed 71,8G before the updates, im not sure because i havent checked it since first day). I only used the laptop for surfing the web, didnt download anything. I also checked the installed programmes, and didn't see anything that should take up this much space. Why would it show this few free space?

    Why can't laptops have 144hz 1ms or 240hz 1ms panels?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:31 AM PDT

    Why? Why do they have 120hz 7ms, 144hz 7ms, 120hz 3ms and 144hz 3ms. Is there a wall they can't get over? Why can't they just slap 240hz 1ms or 144hz 1ms panel on them? Why?

Looking for school laptop! Budget of $700

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:53 PM PDT

Hi guys! I'm around that age where need some tech for school. Everything in this list is flexible. I'm looking for something that is

    1) Portable, 2 cm or under. Could be stretched to 2.5 cm if it's worth it

    2) Last me through the school day. 6 hours minimum battery life for just Word and web browsing.

    3) Can handle some light gaming. Looking for something that could play Overwatch, Fortnite and Csgo at 60fps (mx150?)

    4) Decent keyboard

So there it is in order of importance. I've had the acer swift 3 in mind, but it is a little pricey for me. I am willing to wait for Black Friday deals, so in the meantime, I'd appreciate some worthy suggestions!

    Clevo P670RG PC Specialist

    Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:51 AM PDT

So I want to do a screen upgrade for this laptop. It's currently on a 60hz IPS panel however I want to upgrade to a 120hz panel. As far as I'm concerned all I'd need to upgrade is a panel with a 30 pin EDP connector regardless of whether it was made for my laptop or not. Currently my laptop has no screen replacement options at all to buy online so I guess I will have to take a risk with one from another model. Is it possible?
