Laptop for Coding / Light Gaming Suggestions

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 10:40 AM PDT

I am going back to school in a month for programming, and am looking for a lapper that can run World of Warcraft / Company of Heroes reasonably well. My ideal budget is between $500-700. Any advice, like what to look for or reliable brands, would be greatly appreciated! :D

    Help with USB-C Docking Station

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 02:10 PM PDT

I recently purchased the Kensington sd4600p docking station, but I have found that the monitor output doesn't work with my laptop. My laptop is the Lenovo Flex 5, which has a USB-C port, but apparently this doesn't support the Displayport over USB-C Alt.

My peripherals that are plugged into the docking station (mouse, keyboard) work fine, but the monitors don't receive a signal. They turn on when the dock is plugged in, but go straight to power-saving mode.

I was wondering if there was an adapter that I could purchase which would add the display-port over USB-C functionality to my laptop, as I bought the docking station to be future-proof for future upgrades? Potentially something like the PCIE expansion cards you can buy for a regular desktop, but for laptop?

Any help or suggestions would be welcome and appreciated.

PSA: Lenovo Ideapad 720s CPU Clock Speeds aren't quite what they would seem

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 01:54 PM PDT

Nearly a month ago, I decided to buy the Lenovo Ideapad 720s because it fit just about all of my requirements - it had a discrete GPU (although just an MX150), weighed around 4 pounds, had a good battery life, and came with an SSD and what seemed to be solid build quality based on everything I had seen. I got it fully specced - i7 8565U, 16 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB NVME SSD. The price wasn't too bad considering the form factor, and overall I would say that the laptop is actually very solid.

However, with so few reviews out there, there were bound to be pitfalls, right? Well, I guess I fell into it. The CPU on this computer (and other Lenovo computers as well, based on some forum posts I saw) only turbos up to an awe-inspiring, jaw dropping... 2 GHz.
So yeah. If you need that performance, stay away from this computer. I'm returning mine to Amazon, citing "incorrect information on the product page" as the reason, since nowhere did it say that there was such a cap on the CPU. Like, if you're just using it normally, it will turbo up to 3.8 GHz normally, but as soon as it gets under load (especially noticeable during a stress test), the clock speed just stays a perfectly horizontal line at 2 GHz exactly.
If you don't particularly care about that, then feel free to buy this laptop. It's incredibly well-built, the screen is pretty (although glossy), the battery lasts around eight hours of just normal schoolwork, the trackpad works incredibly well, and the fingerprint scanner is fast and reliable. Honestly, I'd recommend it to any of my friends that don't care to split hairs over performance. But yeah, just a general PSA for anyone thinking about buying this laptop.

Suggestion for MacBook Pro/Air Specs for coding and photography

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 01:36 PM PDT

I have a laptop with windows on it with 16gb ram, 250gb ssd, and a 4K screen. It's heavy, has bad battery life, and the fan gets loud. Pretty much it's good as a mobile workstation but I'm looking for something much more portable and that doesn't need to always be plugged in to use with my current laptop.

I want to get either a MacBook Pro or air so I can also make iOS apps, better terminal use, and also do some photo/ video editing. I can afford any of these:

    1. MacBook Air i5/i7 with either 128gb or 256gb ssd
    2. MacBook Pro no Touch ID with 16gb ram and 128gb ssd
    3. MacBook Pro no Touch ID with 8gb ram and 256gb ssd

I'm also open to using external drives for storage, thanks in advance for any advice

NEED HELP CHOOSING A LAPTOP PRICE RANGE AROUND 600 IN CANADA

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 12:57 PM PDT

Hello Everyone, I am a 22 year women from Canada currently attending my fourth year of University. My laptop is broken and I need to get a new one, however I am no idea what to look for and am completely lost. I do not plan on buying a Mac because of the price however my price range is around $600. I do not game or edit photos and really just need it for school work and surfing the net!!! The only thing is I have to do an eye program on my computer that needs to be downloaded via CD, so any suggestions would need a disk drive (I know these are getting harder and harder to find). Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am VERY stressed about this.

Is a surface go with a Pentium 4415Y and 4/8GB of RAM good for school/casual use for the next 2 to 3 years?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:36 AM PDT

And should I go for the 4 or 8 GB model?

Also, I was thinking of getting a laptop with a i3-7020U instead of this one. Would that be a better option?

Best value with an 8th gen i5, 1060 or better, 16GB or better, SSD + HDD, 1080p IPS 60fps (don't need 4k or 144hz, have those on my battlestation), and RGB keyboard?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 08:07 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I really like the Blade, Aorus, and Fragbook but I'm looking at something a little bit less expensive since this will mainly be for school and portable gaming as I have a main battlestation for 4k or 144hz gaming.

I really might even settle for a 1050ti, but RGB keyboard is pretty much necessary (I love the ASUS ROG that has caselighting matching the keyboard backlight).

One issue that I'm experiencing right now is feature/price creep. I like the ROG GU 501, but for $300 more why not get the blade? Then for $300 more why not get the Aorus? Then for $300 more why not get a Fragbook with custom paint? Before I know it I'm up to $3k, which is not a great use of funds for a backup gaming/school laptop.

Does anyone know if there's anything in the $900-$1200 range with the specs in my title? Bonus points for on-key lighting and effects, especially if it matches case or ambient lighting.

    Little buzzing noises in laptop

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 06:23 AM PDT

    Hey

    I got a new laptop recently, Dell G5 15 5587

    GTX 1050ti 4gb

    i5-8300h @ 2,3Ghz to 4Ghz

    and an SSD.

However, I recently found out that it makes a noise like this when it's plugged, and stops immediately when I unplug the laptop

I found some other people who had this thing as well, but I couldn't find out whether it's normal or not. Here's what it sounds like:

    https://soundcloud.com/vus-klin-tron/laptop-noise

Is something wrong? It's really quiet, but I can hear it regardless. It doesn't seem to be linked to my audio or anything either, and the fans seem to be in a good shape

Sending my Aero 15x in for RMA, what should I expect?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:17 PM PDT

So my laptop has a broken 'D' Key and I contacted Gigabytes Customer support and was issued an RMA Number and it has been confirmed. Are there any steps I should take beforehand, should I be worried about my whats on my drives? All they need to do is replace the keyboard, and most importantly how long should I expect this to take? (I know Gigabytes RMA center is unreliable but i'm hopeful)

    CPU for Software Engineering student

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 01:09 AM PDT

Hi I've just enrolled SoftEng at Nottingham so I want to ask if there is any courses in that course in which a 6 core CPU laptop would be very helpful with side mainstream gaming like AC series.

I've just bought an ASUS TUF FX504 i7 8th GTX1050 but am disappointed that they can only squeeze upto 25W and I plan to exchange it with another laptop. I've also read that the 6 core CPU is heavily hampered by the fact that laptop at most can only allow 45W.

Anyone can help me with this? If the i7 is not needed or the performance is not that great compared to i5 8th gen, I plan to hunt an i5 with GTX1060.

Sidenote, anyone tried game streaming with Parsec on a i5 8th Gen laptop? Does the software cause frame drops or hiccups?

    Laptop for CAD

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:02 PM PDT

I'm in the market for a new laptop. I'd mostly be using it for fairly basic tasks like word processing and perhaps light spreadsheet work, but I will likely also end up using it for cad. I think cad would be the most intensive use for me, and I'd be using both Autodesk inventor and solid works. I wouldn't be doing anything too complicated, likely only assemblies of less than 100 parts, but I just don't know what kind of specs I would need because I don't know what cad stresses in a computer.

Basically what my question comes down to is do I need 16 GB ram and how much benefit would I see from having a dedicated GPU? (I'd only be getting something like an MX150)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Laptop: portable and can be upgraded

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:12 PM PDT

My gf wants a new laptop for this Christmas. She has been using the Acer Chromebook for over a year and would like to have a touch-screen, numeric key pad and a locked cap. In other words, she wants a portable touch-screen PC laptop. She uses it for homework, browsing the web and youtube. No gaming. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

PS: I still have some DDR3 ram from my previous laptop and SSD 240gb at hands.

Samsung Notebook 9 for Occasional software development

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:44 PM PDT

I'm looking to get a laptop for occasional software development and maybe running trading platforms (thinkorswim, tradestation, etc.). I am curious if anyone's used this laptop for any amount of actual work?

I like the specs and the 15" screen with the low weight. For some reason there's a noticeable psychological difference from 3 to 4 lbs.

I've heard, and what I'd like to get opinions of, is the thermal control on the laptop; it's no good if it burns itself out compiling something.
