How can I turn off my house's internet undetected? Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:04 PM PDT I want to enjoy a day or two with my father, conversing, enjoying our company, having a relationship. But every single night, no exceptions, he has come home from work, walked straight past me, and gotten onto his computer until bedtime. I'm moving across the country for university next semester, and I'm worrying about ever bonding again like we used to. Is there a way I can "cut" the internet temporarily without being exposed? I'm no tech wiz, btw. PS, I have spoken to him about this before, but little changed. He's a bit absent minded. I know he won't be pissed or anything if the internet falls, from past experiences. I think breaking up his routine will benefit him a lot. [link] [comments] |

My internet speed dips regularly, and I've got no idea what's causing it Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:33 AM PDT Hey everyone, for a while now I've had a weird issue with my pc. It seems that every now and then the internet speed gets throttled, causing problems when I watch livestreams or when I play online games. I've compiled some test results here As you can see the speed goes down drastically at regular intervals. And for those who notice my task bar: yes, that's NordVPN, but it wasn't on during the tests. Hope y'all can help! *Edit: I notice I forgot to say that it's not my provider - my house mates don't have the same issue. I've also tried various cables, but the problem remains. *Edit 2: Back for round 2 today! Thanks to all of you for your suggestions - I'll try the more rigorous ones today. So far, no jackpot yet though :( [link] [comments] |

Someone has access to my PC (keylogger?) Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:32 AM PDT Hi This is a short recap what happened: Installed cracked software, immediately saw that is was bad software. Did a system restore, all seemed well. Next day PC wouldn't boot, had to recover a week old backup. PC wouldn't boot properly, had to always force boot from SSD in the BIOS. Fixed that by repairing the bootrec. All seemed ok again. But now it seems that someone has access to my logins. Had a mail that someone from a Russian IP logged in to one of my accounts. I changed the password of that account and my Gmail at once. But yesterday I saw an email appear from Steam saying something about a gift card and it was deleted 1 sec later. Somebody still has access to my gmail! It also appeared on the list of logged in devices. I changed my Gmail and some other passwords from my phone using mobile data. Haven't logged back in from my PC. What's the best plan of action? I already ordered a new SSD and data drive but still need to copy data from it. Is it wise to copy all the needed data from hard drives to my NAS. Do a clean install and copy everything from NAS to drive? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:07 AM PDT So Game DVR (for windows 10) is one of the only screen recorders that record my screen lag free. But when I record there is an overlay. When I'm in game (Fortnite BR or any game so far) and am recording sometimes my mouse hovers over the overlay for a second, then either I click the white space and click out of the game, or click the stop button which stops the recording. Then I have to press esc (to go into game menu) and move my cursor back to the bottom left which is extremley annoying mid-recording. If anyone could help me maybe lock my cursor to the game or get rid of it when im in fullscreen that would be great! (I also posted this in the windows 10 subreddit but nobody could help me) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 01:07 AM PDT So currently I have 2 SSDs, one in a Dell laptop, which is 500gb and one in a 250gb in a desktop computer. How would I be able to effectively swap these 2 drives, wiping them included. If I create a Windows recovery USB on the desktop, will I still have to enter a product key when I install Windows on the 500gb SSD? And will I also have to create a Windows recovery USB on the laptop as well? Thanks for any responses. [link] [comments] |
2101 Detection error on SSD (M.2) Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:48 AM PDT Hello, I'm using WD GREEN SSD 3nand 240gb regular 2,5" SATA3 interface. In recent months I have been experiencing error in the title, however it only happens during restart of the system. When turning the windows off and on again the drive is loaded successfully and I boot into Windows. I have tried unplugging it, cleaning the contacts and then plugging it back in without any help in the issue. Is there anything I can do? I dont have any other SSD lying around to try using that in my laptop (Thinkpad T460) instead of the one that I am using. [link] [comments] |
Horrible ping rubberbanding over wired connection when room mate uses his PC Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:44 AM PDT Specs: Windows 10 Pro intel core i7-6700K CPU @ 4 cpu 4.00 16G ram 64 bit OS ASRock B250M Pro4 motherboard For about two months now, my ping has shot up or experienced rubber banding when my room mate is playing any game. I've followed the advice for most simple fixes, made sure there were no firewall issues, have done a scan for malware, and ATT came out and replaced the modem. I only seem to experience this when my room mate is playing something. We're both wired to the router. We're on the 22 mb plan I believe. Sorry if I forgot something, just frustrated. Smart TVs OS that facilitate connection to College WiFi Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:42 AM PDT Okay, so I'm trying to buy a 4K Smart TV for my dorm room(for gaming, netflix and whatnot) and I was wondering if anyone here has any idea about OS or types of Smart TV on the market which facilitate this kind of thing. As usual, the network here requires an username and a password for connection and, from what I've read online, there aren't many TVs(or none, actually) that can do that. But hopefully someone here knows about an exception to this. I saw that it's usually the IT department from your Uni that helps you with this sort of thing, but I'm from a small country and the guys here know diddly squat about this stuff and will most definitely hit me with "we can't do anything, live with it"(speaking from experience, unfortunately). Also read something about turning your laptop into a virtual router using Connectify, but something tells me the connection speed(which already is not quite stellar) will take a hit. Many thanks [link] [comments] |
Gigabyte RTX 2070 Uncontrollable and Unbelievably Loud Fans. Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:41 PM PDT I'm just going to copy my issue from the help thread over on /r/nvidia any help is greatly appreciated. this card is driving me nuts. Status: UNRESOLVED Computer Type: Desktop, custom built GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 GAMING OC 8G CPU: Ryzen 1700x No overclock Motherboard: Asus PRIME X370-PRO, Latest BIOS (Version 4024) RAM: G.Skill Trident Z 16GB (2x8GB) 3200Mhz DDR4 PSU: Corsair CX650M Operating System & Version: Windows 10 Education 64-bit (10.0, Build 17134) Clean Install. GPU Drivers: 416.34 clean install Description of Problem: Fan speed completely uncontrollable and extremely loud. it starts off fine when I start the PC but as soon as the card is under any kind of load it fires up like a jet engine. then when I exit the games i'm playing it will not calm down. The included software does not work and crashes often. 3rd party programs such as afterburner can not control the fans either. EDIT - Also when the software crashes it will occasionally stop sending any signal to my secondary monitors until i physically unplug them and plug them back in, even after a restart. This is horrible. I was told when i bought this card it was final sale unless there was a manufacturer defect. I'm really hoping i can return it based on all of this, It's hardly even giving me a performance boost over my 1070. Troubleshooting: I have tried restarting the PC uininstalling and reinstalling all related drivers. I have tried uising the supplied AORUS ENGINE software, as well as MIS Afterburner. nothing works. This card was just purchased today, I am seriously regretting this purchase. the fans are unbelievably loud at all times. [link] [comments] |
Phone keeps showing please turn on/ off handset alert Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:38 AM PDT I originally posted on r/hacking but was told to come here. My iPhone 7 keeps displaying an alert that says please turn on/off handset and then either cancel or accept at the bottom in blue. There's also a back option in the top left. It's come up about 5 times so far- while in YouTube, in snapchat and once when my phone was off it turned on the screen to that. I haven't clicked accept as I'm worried it's a hack I've always clicked cancel. On iOS 12.1 and have deleted any apps that aren't 100% trusted. Just wondering if anyone's seen this before or has any advice. I would link a picture but not sure how. [link] [comments] |
Does ProctorU Need Port Forwarding? Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:37 AM PDT I.e. does it need any inbound rules? I certainly hope the answer is "no". I need to take a test with ProctorU and it says "port 1935 must be open", but does not specify whether that's outbound or inbound. I live in an apartment without access to the router, so I cannot configure it to allow incoming ports of my choosing. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:22 AM PDT I just bought a pair of earphones with a mic built in so I can finally communicate properly over Xbox game chat, but I'm having an issue getting the mic to work. I stream my Xbox gameplay to my laptop and use a wired controller to play. I have the earphones plugged into the controller, they're a normal 3.5mm jack. Whenever I speak though, the mic audio is playing through my earphones and the Xbox isn't picking it up. No clue wtf is going on, anyone have any experience? [link] [comments] |

New devices not connecting to internet Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:12 AM PDT Just moved to Poland into my girlfriend's place, whose internet/ISP is set up by the landlord. There's an Arris TG862 802.11b/g/n router that my GF has had her laptop/iPad/iPhone hooked up to. She's had no issues and the connection is up to 50 mbps. I have a Asus zenbook laptop, iPhone 7 and iPad, and while I am connected to the router okay, I only have intermittent internet access on all my devices. Any ideas what the problem might be? I have a Nokia 2 on oreo beta and T-Mobile but it's been happening before then [link] [comments] |
New build always hangs after a couple minutes Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:08 PM PDT So I just got the parts for a new system, and every time I try to install the OS (Windows 10 via USB), it becomes unresponsive. The very first time, I made it through the install, only to hang on the first reboot into the OS. I got an AMD 2700X CPU with stock cooling, ROG strix x470-f Mobo, a windforce GTX 970, and 2x8gb of gskill DDR 3200 RAM. I've tried installing on 3 different hard drives (1 SSD, 2 disks), and with the USB in different plugs. I swapped out the GPU for a GTX 570 I had in another machine that I know works. I tried with both sticks of RAM separately. I even swapped out the power supply for another, and still every time it hangs. So that leaves the CPU and Mobo, right? Is there any way to find out which one is at fault? This is my first AMD build, so I don't have parts to swap. What's the next step here? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:49 AM PDT Hello reddit, I've got a weird problem with my PC since three months: Every time I start it for the first time the front fan goes nuts. (By "first time" I mean the first start of the day a.k.a not using it for more than ten minutes) The problem begins when the PC boots -> The noise is getting bigger and bigger and only ends with a restart. (The fan is just spinning really fast. When I stop it and let it go it starts again) After restarting the PC the fan is working silent/properly how it should. Do you have any advice for me how to fix this problem? [link] [comments] |

Most DirectX software won't work on my NVIDIA card, but will work on Intel onboard graphics Posted: 28 Oct 2018 10:44 PM PDT I have a very peculiar situation here with numerous solutions already tried. TLDR: Most DirectX programs (Source engine games, Skyrim, graphic demos) only work w/ onboard graphics; when running with my GPU, errors pop up along the lines of "cannot init DirectX"). OpenGL software works fine. SPECS * Windows 10 Home * Intel i5-4690K * 8GB RAM * NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti A few days ago I tried to launch Garry's Mod from Steam, only to met with a window that spawned and faded away within the next frame. Verifying game cache and reinstalling didn't work at all. I then tried to launch TF2, Fistful of Frags, CSS, and CSGO with similar results. No Source engine game wanted to launch successfully. I tried a few other games like Battlefield 4, Kerbal Space Program, and Minecraft; all of them launched successfully. Skyrim was another game that refused to launch, but gave me some hints. I guess it was my first launch (had it installed for awhile), but it went through to automatically set my graphics to lowest possible, despite my GTX 1050Ti. I went to check my graphics settings but instead found myself unable to change the game resolution; the resolutions list was completely empty. After trying to launch anyway, I was met with an error along the lines of "failed to initialize renderer." Having another theory in mind, I tried a graphics benchmark - Heaven. When attempting to run with graphics API "DirectX 11," it failed with a similar message from Skyrim. Same results for the other DirectX versions. Strangely, OpenGL ran fine. I tried another DirectX-exclusive demo (can't recall name), which gave similar results. So it was the graphics API apparently? It sort of made sense, since Windows Source engine games also used DirectX. However, Battlefield 4 - a game that works on my PC - also uses DirectX. Here's what I've tried so far:
What I've found out later is that when I run with onboard Intel graphics, everything works (obviously at lower framerates). All of my games launch, along with the demos (that don't require GPU-specific features). I'm thinking a fresh install is in order, but would very much like to avoid that route. edit: formatting edit2: reword edit3: trials list fix [link] [comments] |

PC won't boot with 2 monitors. Posted: 28 Oct 2018 08:14 PM PDT Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my PC. It started after I plugged in my new SSD and switched my main monitor from HDMI to DP. Basically if I have 2 monitors plugged in when starting my PC it won't boot, however, if i unplug one of the monitors it boots up normally, what could be going wrong? GPU is a Strix 1080, been in use for about a month. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2018 02:08 AM PDT [SOLVED] Hi guys! I have a problem here. I installed the trial version of Malwarebytes for 30 days and windows defender identified it as an antivirus, so deactivated itself. The problem is the 30 days of trial went off, so Malwarebytes didn't act like an av anymore but windows defender still thinks there's an av running. I uninstalled Malwarebytes but even that didn't work. There is a message in windows defender ' Your virus and threat is managed by your organization' Any clue on what should I do? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For those who have the same problem: Open regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft > Windows Defender Here, delete 'DisableAntiSpyware'. Go to windows defender and press RESTART. [link] [comments] |
