I got redirected here. Could you guys help me?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:00 PM PDT

I'm starting my second year at University doing a physics degree that involves programming. I've been reading articles and evaluating options for weeks on deciding on a device best suited for my needs.

I require a laptop that can handle programming tasks, although what I'm doing now isn't that tasking I wish to be able to future proof my purchase as the field I'm going into is getting more and more programming heavy. I do have a desktop computer but working out of the house would be more productive and thus I also have a plenty of storage if needed.

I'd like to be able to not have to use a note pad. I find it inefficient and alot of effort to keep organized thus the ability to save edit and organize files much easier and safer. I realize to do this a touchscreen and or pen is required. Hand writing notes is much easier in lectures and while problem solving, things like being able to draw diagrams is important and without this feature very time consuming.

I thought my quest had come to an end before realizing that the product I had chosen wasn't available to the UK, this being the Samsung Notebook 9, at least without a large increase in price and hassle. I do not mind spending money on a product as I believe it to be a worthy investment but I do unfortunately have a limit on what I can afford.

    [$1,500 | USA] Sister needs a Gaming/Photoshop Capable Laptop

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 09:01 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

~$1,500 (can flex a little lower or higher) - USA

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

A good battery life would be nice to be able to take it out and paint or write.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

As related to the mentioned painting and writing, something that isn't very bulky is fairly important.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    N/A

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

Gaming, painting. Life is Strange 2, Photoshop.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Life is Strange 2, Doom, Just Cause 3 and Assassin's Creed: Origins. Obviously, 60 FPS would be good. Graphical quality isn't quite as important as FPS, but don't want to be playing everything on low settings either. No multiplayer gaming.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

Since the intent of portability is there, reliable build quality is desired. Also, might want to be doing things like laying in bed with the laptop, so cooling that won't be crippled by being on a blanket would be good.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

One of the laptops she was already looking into was the Lenovo Legion Y730 which seemed like a pretty good value to me, but I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to this kind of thing and I figured people on here would be able to provide a better opinion.

    Thanks for any help!

Help I need a new laptop for College

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:37 PM PDT

    Budget- ~$650-900 USD

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

    Probably a good battery life.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I would prefer something a lot smaller than what I have now (5.39lbs). I would be okay with a thinner and lighter laptop because I will be carrying it with me most of the time at school.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    I need Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14-15inch would be ideal but I'm not too picky if it gets the job done.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No, this is strictly for school.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard and reliable build quality would be nice to have. I want to avoid getting a touchscreen laptop.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I mainly use my school laptop to use Microsoft Office applications and Blackboard. My old laptop isn't working anymore so I need to get a new one soon because I can't do any assignments on it currently. I would like to have a place for my headphones, a few USB ports, and an HDMI port. I want a durable laptop that will last me a few years. My current one lasted about 5 years. Thanks in advance!

    [Any Screen Size][+1 USA][Below $300 USD]

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:16 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    Around $300 and below.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Whatever is good for writing documents, printing them out, and web browsing. Rarely if not at all, any intensive software or such. 2 in 1 is nice but is not necessary. Battery life is a non issue since I always will charge it.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

None. Laptop stays home most of the time.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No. Just for the most part writing on Google Docs and printing them out. Web browsing too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    None.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard, build quality, and screen is of course appreciated. Touch screen, finger print reader, are not necessary. However optical drive is very nice but I heard you can get external ones cheap too.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Something that is reliable and will last a good time. Maybe not HP... always had bad luck with HP. But any brand and such will do provided it falls under the stipulations.

I just need a good simple laptop that for my mom and bro. Good for my mom, for web browsing and storing pictures. A good one for my bro who always writes emails and essays and prints them out. Sometimes turbo tax but that is it.

    Gaming laptop around 1000-1300€ (France)

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 12:53 AM PDT

    Hi all!

I'm in France, and I'd like to buy a gaming laptop that will last at least a few years. My budget is around 1000 - 1300 euros, but I can go up to 1400 euros if necessary.

Thanks in advance for your helpful advices, it's always nice to know we can rely on such a community when it comes to spending quite a bit of money efficiently.

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    1200-1400 € France

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

    Best specs

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

Not that important, the laptop will stay at home most of the time

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    17"

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

    Mostly gaming

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

Mostly WoW in the best settings I can get

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

A rather good keyboard is also a good thing. An Azerty keyboard would be a plus, although if the best option only comes in QWERTY I can make it work.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

I would like to have something reliable, which will last a few years.

The new asus zenbook 13, 14, 15 good enough for CC?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:17 AM PDT

So I'm a student communication and multimedia design. I design and create website, apps and other user interfaces. I am working a lot with Adobe programmes like Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom.

I am thinking to buy the new Asus zenbook, but can this laptop run these programmes smoothly? Even at the same time?

What version do you guys recommend? I don't really play games on the laptop, I just want those big programs to run as smooth as possible.

Need a laptop with either the option of easy graphics card replacement (preferably with a desktop GPU), or a laptop that's compatible with an external desktop GPU machine (who's GPU can be replaced easily). Don't wanna do that tacky DIY mod where part of the motherboard shows and it looks ugly.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to see if you guys can recommend a decent gaming laptop or PC for under $1,200 CAD / $950 USD. Preferably it will be SSD. I'm mainly buying it for Microsoft Office work, YouTube/anime videos, and gaming (trying out Assassin's Creed Odyssey on 5th).

Do you guys know of one that fits my description? I've been hearing mixed things about Acer's Nitro 5 series.

    Thanks!

Max AUD $2000 for University in Australia to Install Linux

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 03:00 AM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: Maximum of $2000 AUD but I would be glad to find a laptop that meets my needs for cheaper. Australia.

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is very important needs to get through school day ~6 hours light usage; don't like 2 in 1 form factor; want good specs for money but not the most important measurement.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Want it light and reasonably thin (thinness is less important). Probably less than 2kg (+- a bit depending on screen size) is a good number.

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux, so the hardware should play nice with it. But if there's a really good option with poor Linux support, okay with using Windows.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 13" and 15"; what in your opinion is best for school?

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming, most often programming. Common workload would be chrome with lots of tabs and an IDE compiling a large project in the background. Plus occasional photo editing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would like a normal amount of IO ports, not just a few USB C ports like some Ultra-books.

Want reliable build quality so it can last at least 5 years. It should look nice considering the cost.

Also want a good keyboard and touch pad.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Researching it I liked the 1080p Dell XPS 15 9570 w/ i5 but I read a lot of stories about people having problems with coil whine and other technical problems; which made me dubious about buying it, especially considering the cost.

Looking for a new Laptop for my mom. Below $320 range.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 11:02 PM PDT

What my mom wants in her laptop:

    Windows 10.

Non Flash storage. HDD/SSD is fine. As long it's above 64GB of storage.

DVD drive but if it's cheap to get a external DVD drive you can omit this.

That's about it for under $320.

I was looking to buy the HP Scarlet Red from Walmart but I wonder what else is good below that price.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specifications for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It is rarely moved and never leaves the house.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light photo editing as in iPhoto/photos levels

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ethernet port, Upgradable Hard Drive, and Ram

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Due to being housebound, this is why upgradable parts are needed so if a drive starts to fail I can replace it or if more ram would be beneficial I could upgrade it. Also, the Wifi Range is really bad in my house. Also the reason I have gone for a £1000 budget is assuming my thought process is correct

New Laptop for College Student with 2000 USD Budget

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:40 PM PDT

    Hello All,

I need a new Windows laptop for college.

To start my total budget is about $2000, but if it could be kept around 1600 that'd be even better. I really would like a two in one with pen support for drawing and note taking. Preferably, a 8th-gen i7, and 16gb of ram, 256gb of storage would be fine but 512gb would be even better. Graphics is less important to me. I would like to stay away from 15 in screens so 13in and 14in screens would be my preferred. Keyboard and track pad quality are also important to me. Do not really care about USB A but would like it to have TB 3.

    Thanks for all help!

Searching for laptop for coding with reasonable support for Linux

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:29 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'd prefer to stay less than $600 or so.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life is preferred, along with at least 8GB RAM. This laptop is going to be used for security research and programming

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really important to me. I find really small laptops (e.g. XPS 13) to be a little too small for my liking.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Win10 and Linux will be my primaries.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Larger than the XPS 13 is preferred.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This won't be a gaming machine. Like I mentioned above, it will mostly be for security research, CTFs, programming, etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The more USB ports the better. A decent track pad thing would be great.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've had some problems finding a decent laptop that can support Linux well. In general I either have issues booting (ACPI I think) or Windows updates clobber the bootloader. It's just a pain.

Eventually I think I might get an XPS 13 Developer edition or similar so I don't have to worry about it, but I do not have the ability at present. I intend for this laptop to be a "con" laptop as well, so being decent but low cost is preferred.

    Thank you!

Recommendations for a computer for university study?? ☺️

    Posted: 03 Oct 2018 12:17 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Would like a computer around $500 AUD, but happy to fork out to around $1000 if it really is worth it. I don't need it for anything special other than for schoolwork, and all I want is for it to last longer than 2 years. If the higher price will get me a longer lifespan then I'd see it as reasonable. Also I'm in Australia.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I seriously have no idea what any of this means but I do want good value for money...?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as it can fit in a school bag it's all good

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Don't mind, but I don't really want to fork out the extra money for a Mac if it isn't worth it, so probably just good old Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. All I need to run is Microsoft Office and Google Chrome

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Won't die after two years....

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I posted this whole spiel before (I didn't realise you had to fill in this form) so I'll just post it below:

Hi there! Not sure if this is the place to be asking but I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff (computers and reddit hahaha).

I'm going to university next year in Australia and I don't have a computer that works, so it's something that I'm going to have to buy. I have a price range up to about $1000ish - happy to fork out a little bit extra if it will really be worth it, but I am on a budget so I would rather have a computer that is on cheaper side.

I only need it for typing word documents and accessing the internet for assignments etc, so it doesn't have to be anything hardcore. My last computer I bought was in 2013, and it got slow and glitchy after 2 years of use (I wasn't using it for anything crazy), so I'd like to buy a computer that won't do that.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Laptops with good IPS display for around $800?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 10:14 AM PDT

As the title suggests, I'm looking for a laptop with a quality IPS display for graphic designing. I'm from India, and the costs of laptops are inflated to obnoxious, exorbitant prices due to the taxes and import fees, so taking all that into account, my budget comes to about $800. I'm also looking for a 15.6" screen and at least a 2GB graphics card. So far, I've been considering the Dell Inspiron 7570 and the Gaming 7567, but most online sources criticize their displays. Anyone have any advice on whether I should go for either of them or any alternative suggestions?

$700 Max. Screen Size: Unsure. USA

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:46 PM PDT

Total budget and country of purchase: USA. $700 max (although if $500 or under that'd be even better!)

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A good battery life would be great; I have 12 hour days and while I won't be using the laptop for the whole 12 hours (and I'll usually be able to charge it), it'd be nice to have a long battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? A lighter laptop would be great as I'll be hauling it around all day.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows would be the top pick, although I could make do with a a Mac or Chrome.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Microsoft Office.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? An optical drive would be a nice bonus, but certainly not a requirement.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'll primarily be using this for school and work and various other projects that involve writing/research/searching things online. Basically, I'm looking for a laptop that will last a while, and that could be used for doing school online.

Thanks for reading! =) (If I've missed anything, just let me know; I'll be more than happy to correct any mistakes.)

    Which one is better?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:30 PM PDT

I will use the laptop for programming, watching movies, browsing and playing only league of legends. I'm curious which one has a better display, faster ssd and which one is better overall for what i need. Both laptops are at the same price and i can't find them in other places than romanian shops. https://mediagalaxy.ro/laptop-hp-14-ce0000nq-intel-core-i5-8250u-pana-la-3-4ghz-14-full-hd-8gb-ssd-256gb-intel-hd-graphics-620-free-dos/ https://mediagalaxy.ro/laptop-lenovo-ideapad-530s-14arr-amd-ryzen-5-2500u-pana-la-3-6ghz-14-full-hd-8gb-ssd-256gb-amd-radeon-vega-8-free-dos/

[400$] Need a backpack-friendly machine for light gaming and schoolwork

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:01 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 400$, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money. I usually have access to a wall socket.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness doesn't matter, weight does. A Thinkpad X230t is about right for the weight I feel comfortable carrying, might be able to carry something slightly heavier. a Thinkpad T61 felt too heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything above 1366x768

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light photo editing, light gaming (Nothing past 2012 probably).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mostly FPS and racing games. I'd like them to run on at least the laptop's full resolution 60fps, even if it means low settings. Halo 1/2, Garry's mod, Counterstrike Source, Need for Speed series, and maybe Grid 1 and Dirt rally 3 spring to mind.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A bright, vibrant screen that's usable in sunlight, and a decent keyboard. A trackpoint (red nub) type input would be nice, but I know I'm probably not gonna get that.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently using a Thinkpad X230t as my main laptop. I figured it would be good enough for what I need, but the GPU is much weaker than I anticipated (Games from the mid-late 2000's get lag on even medium settings), and the windows trackpoint driver makes it to where you can't click for 1 second after any keyboard input to prevent accidental clicks... except you can't turn it off and it makes any mouse-oriented games unplayable. The screen has also proven to be kinda cramped while working on schoolwork and other such things.

I don't know if I want another thinkpad just because of that trackpoint driver issue and the weight of anything bigger than an X series.

I know I'm not gonna get anything amazing for this money, but I'd like to at least try and get something better than what I have now. I'm willing to buy used laptops and laptops with no hard drive or RAM. I also need at least easy-ish access to the RAM and hard drive.

Current laptop specs, so you know what I'm trying to upgrade from:

    Thinkpad X230t

    Intel i5-3320m 2.6ghz

    Intel HD graphics 4000

    6gb DDR3 RAM

    250gb SSD

    1366x768 IPS display
